Hey Blackheath. You're only getting a surprise round. Rapid shot says: "When making a full-attack action with a ranged weapon, you can fire one additional time this round at your highest bonus. ." So, you only get one arrow. Sorry.

No problem. Without the -2 for rapid shot, that first shot would be 13. Not that it makes a world of difference.

Silver Crusade

OK. The hound growls and stalks around. Though unintelligent, it knows that something is awry when all the mongrelmen workers fall down. It paces the floor patiently; it's uneven limbs make a telltale sound: scrape, slap, scrape, slap.

At a safe distance away, Blackheath begins summoning a monster.

Upon hearing the sounds of casting (the hound doesn't know that it hears casting, just that there's a new noise) the hound approaches. Scrape, slap, scrape, slap.

Before the hound arrives at the party's location, however, a lone fire beetle appears right in front of the hound!

There's a deep growl that rumbles through all of your bodies like standing next to a base speaker at a concert. It thrums through you, and your breath becomes shallow.

The hound strikes the beetle killing it instantly, but also revealing its location!
____________________________________________________________

This is the surprise round

Sharien strikes first, firing a ray of eldritch energy that weakens the hound slightly!

Blackheath follows up with a shot. Though his aim was true, the arrow bounces harmlessly off of the hound's hide. Then Grog charges the creature. His axe finds its mark and he makes a huge gash in the hound's side. Long dead viscera and the smell of decayed flesh spills out of the hound. But, there's no reaction from it, no sign of pain.

Grog can tell right away: not all the damage from his attack went through! This creature has DR.

Botting Gravleon

The cleric of Sarenrae follows suit and charges alongside the half-orc:

Charge: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 2 = 16

Unfortunately, the cleric's attack, like Blackheath's, bounces harmlessly off of the creature's hide.

Blackheath previously identified the creature as a flesh golem hound. It's a variant flesh golem; it's a construct.

Once again, Grog's axe finds its mark. Once again, not all of the damage goes through. The hound affixes its eyes upon the half-orc. Once again, despite the grievous wound, it makes no sound. There is no emotion. The hound has merely "acquired" its "target."

(The hound makes me think of a "fleshy" version of a "Terminator." Emotionless, cold, built to kill.)

Feel free to retcon your surprise round action. You can have started summoning the earth elemental at that time, if you like. It can appear this turn.

Silver Crusade

Presuming that you retcon to summon an elemental, to move things along.

A small earth elemental pops up next to the hound, providing Grog with a flank!

I keep forgetting is take 20 refer to take 20 minutes or just take a natural 20?

-Posted with Wayfinder

Silver Crusade

When you have plenty of time, you are faced with no threats or distractions, and the skill being attempted carries no penalties for failure, you can take 20. In other words, if you roll a d20 enough times, eventually you will get a 20. Instead of rolling 1d20 for the skill check, just calculate your result as if you had rolled a 20.

Taking 20 means you are trying until you get it right, and it assumes that you fail many times before succeeding. Taking 20 takes 20 times as long as making a single check would take (usually 2 minutes for a skill that takes 1 round or less to perform).

Since taking 20 assumes that your character will fail many times before succeeding, your character would automatically incur any penalties for failure before he or she could complete the task (hence why it is generally not allowed with skills that carry such penalties). Common “take 20” skills include Disable Device (when used to open locks), Escape Artist, and Perception (when attempting to find traps).
