Trouble in Tamran | Sky Key Solution | Between the Lines

The back entrance it is, then.

Bartholomew sneaks to the rear tunnel, seemingly unspotted.

The trapdoor is easy enough to open. Guaril mutters something about not liking being stuck underground, but follows.

The tunnel goes deep and straight (I assume you have a way to make light). Eventually, the way is barred by an iron portcullis.

You don't see any mechanism that could be disabled, but you can try to Break (Str check, you'll probably want to aid each other), or come up with some other method. Turning around is also an option.

Guaril sighs audibly, then shudders. He's clearly uncomfortable in these confined quarters.

Lolly searches the walls around portcullis in case there are any secret ways to bypass the bars of iron.

If nothing is found.

Then Lolly goes into here convulsions, shifting Sir T from ecto to incorporeal.

If breaking it is the only option, Lolly can boost Sir T to a 20 Str for 1 round with Burst of Adrenaline; so might be best for primary check with other aiding. Thoughts?

As I said, you can try and break through, or you can turn around. Perception rolls won't help you here.

Alexandre forms his any-tool into a saw, but he realizes as he's doing so that it will take a very long time (probably three hours) to saw through several solid bars. of iron.
It's a viable option, surely, just tedious and time-consuming.

So, what is the party going to do?

The little halfling berates the intimidating phantom, Are you sure there's no switch or handles on that side, Try-staaas?

She over enunciates the name, indicating dissatisfaction. The phantom seems to take no notice to the halfling's jabs.

Well, this place is designed stupid, why would you design a secret escape route you couldn't escape from! Fine let's drudge around to the front.

Lolly turns Sir T back to an ectoplasm as the group begins to move back around to the front.

I was hoping for at least a Break DC check from someone, but alas. ...

Opting not to spend the several hours working on the portcullis in the back entrance, the party move around to the front.

Scorch marks mar the stones of this dilapidated keep. Vegetation hangs loosely from holes in the partially collapsed ceiling, and the floor is sunken and cracked in several places. A charred wooden door lies on the ground in front of an archway leading west. To the north, a stone trap door peeks out from behind a pile of rubble.

As you approach, you see the ghostly forms of two elves, a male and a female, and an array of ghostly, translucent line soldiers standing in perfect formation. The two elves, clearly in charge, walk quietly in front of the unmoving ghostly troops.

The male elf specter responds to Bartholomew's hail. "We are at peace, invader! Depart so that we may continue our vigilant duty!"

These ghosts are serious. And there are a lot of them. Yet, there is some illusion at play here. You realized in a flash of inspiration that the two elven leaders aren't really ghosts at all, but are somehow glamoured to appear as ghosts. The leaders seem very serious about attacking if you don't depart, however.

@Bartholomew:
The elf who spoke was lying. His speech patterns are wrong for the time period he's supposed to represent. When you realize that he's only pretending to be a ghost, the illusions are easier to see.

You're not sure about the female elf, however. She might really be a ghost.

@Lolly:
You're set to believe the male ghost's story, but something about the movement is wrong, too similar to a spell you read about once. You realize that it's an illusion made to make him appear as a ghost. And when you realize this, you see the same tell-tale signs on the female elf. Her ghostly appearance is an illusion too. But what about the silent, unmoving platoon?

Things are becoming tense, as the ghostly elves fail to respond to your calls. "Leave now," the male calls, "Or our judgements will fall upon you."

They're likely to attack imminently if you don't depart. You've pushed your luck already.

With a narrowing of his eyes, Alexandre springs forward with a cry of "Charlatans!", drawing his sword as he moves. "The elves from The Gar!"

Which I believe is initiative.

As Lolly deals with the sphere, she notes two more guards laying in wait, and they look decidedly NON ghostly!

DC 11 Will, fail- the affected creature becomes frightened for 1d4 round; save, shaken for 1 round. Creatures with 6 or more HD are immune to this effect.

Then rushes past Lolly and engages the guard; attempting to slam the man. Assuming he is at least shaken from the cause fear

Power from Despair:

The phantom gains a +2 bonus on attack and damage rolls against creatures that are shaken, frightened, panicked, cowering, or subject to effects such as aura of despair or crushing despair.

Miserable Strike (Su):

If the phantom hits a creature with a slam attack, that creature must succeed at a Will saving throw (DC = 10 + 1/2 the phantom's Hit Dice + the phantom's Charisma modifier) or take a –2 penalty on attack and damage rolls for 1 round. This is a mind-affecting fear and emotion effect. Penalties from multiple hits don't stack with themselves.

Alexandre was expecting a great many things. The barrage of fire and force that came was not one of them. In an attempt to avoid some of the fire, he ends up tripping over the ball of flame, and ends up in prime position to be picked off by the magic missile.

With the guard held by Krya's magic, Sir Trystas moves on to the ghostly elf (blue), attempting to slam the ghostly entity.
