I think it would be at least an action now to try and identify a monster. Remember in the play test you get three actions in each round, would you like to try and use your third for monster id? Or another attack (remember progressive attack penalties, they differ in the playtest)

Right I didn't give a listing of actions, 1 raise shield, 2 stride, 3 strike! Though he'll definitely try identifying on the next turn, I wasn't certain if it was an action or not.

I read it the same as you. Someone who CAN take one (or really anyone who can hit before the spell is completed) can automatically disrupt it by doing more damage than the caster's level.

I think we need a fighter to have it be an AoO, right? And it isn't the casting, but the somatic component that has a trait that triggers it? Something like that

Playtest Character 1
Attack of Opportunity, p. 87 wrote:
Trigger: A creature within your reach uses a manipulate action or a move action, makes a ranged attack, or leaves a square during a move action it’s using.

I believe Bristor is right that it's part of the casting that triggers the AoO, which I believe is the Manipulate action. Both the material and somatic components have the manipulate trait, so even if it doesn't have all three actions, there's a good chance the spell would provoke, but only if one of us was a fighter. ‾\_(ツ)_/‾

Ahh, that manipulative trait. I thouhg I'd read that casting still did, but then couldn't find out anywhere that did tht. They are going to have to make this is a bit clearer in the final book I think.

Flint makes a good attack, but it is caught on the undead priests shield. Darius continues to offer encouragement to the group. Bristor makes a good attack, although the priest again catches most of it on his shield.
Hit, but Shield block reaction, reduces damage by 5
Calder can't bring his own weapons to effect, though surely sooner or later something has to hurt this monstrosity.

As you battle with it, you think for a moment on some of what you have already learned. Perhaps the journal you found once belonged to this priest, perhaps presenting it to him might cause memories of the good he did in life to distract him. Intimidate action, +3 bonus and special effects on succss. You also remember that from the thugs, there was something about his right side being damaged. That is the hand he wields his morning star in... if the arm is damaged, perhaps he will be easier to disarm?

Ahh Criticial success.. no effect at all, good catch. And good time for a 20
Ogren recognises this creature as a skeletal champion. He is not that sure about their powers, but knows they are resistant to all but bludgeoning weapons/

Flint attacks, but without luck.

Okay- Disarm, in the rules it says Athletics check against reflex DC. But what is the reflex DC of a creature. You get a reflex save. OR do you (as the person who is being disarmed) roll a reflex save against a DC equal to the athletics check of the disarmer? Thoughts? 10+reflex save as a static DC seems far too easy a check for most folk to make to do a disarm, so I'm kind of hoping it is not that.
reflex vs 22?: 1d20 ⇒ 6
Game wise, with that type of roll, it probably doesn't matter.
The creature's morning star flies from its hand.

As Ogren casts his spell, the priest strikes at him with his shield
AOO (yes he does get one: 1d20 ⇒ 7
damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

It hunkers down behind its shield as it stoops down to pick up the morning star. Finally the foul thing heals itself with its dark energies.
harm: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Status, bold may post : Inspire courage active ;
Bristor 5 damage ; 1 resolve ; SHIELD RAISED
Darius 6 damage
Flint 2 damage ;
Ogren 8 damage ;
Calder 5 damage;

undead 4 damage;

Cleric of Cayden Cailean 1 (HP: 17/18) | AC: 15, TAC: 13, (Shield for +1) | Perception +3 | F: +4, R: +2, W: +4 Spell Pool: 2/2 | Resonance: 2/2 | Hero Points: 1/1

Bristor's jovial nature is starting to fade in the face of this foe, beads of sweat are breaking out on his brow. "Perhaps I need more of Cayden's aid? He holds his rapier aloft and calls down the power of his god, and then attempts to strike.

cast magic weapon = 2 actions

attck: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
dmg w/ IC and magic weapon: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 2) + 4 = 11

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Cleric of Cayden Cailean 1 (HP: 17/18) | AC: 15, TAC: 13, (Shield for +1) | Perception +3 | F: +4, R: +2, W: +4 Spell Pool: 2/2 | Resonance: 2/2 | Hero Points: 1/1

this might be the worst collective rolling I've ever seen, with Flint taking the cake for best worst! :)

Flint, it doesn't matter this turn, but you should be getting a +2 from Inspire Courage and Magic Weapon, not just a +1

Ogren gives a grumble as the thing tries to hit him again. He keeps swinging his sword around, shifting the motion ever so slightly, changing the tone and tempo of the music, his voice follows suit. The spell creates a glow around his weapon that seems to make the blade flicker onto different paths for a second as he brings the weapon down on the skeletal creature. "Hit it with bludegeoning things if you got 'em. I ain't got anything but a sword or dagger, though."

Casting True strike, it is a verbal component only so it shouldn't provoke

True-striked Longsword roll 1: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 1 = 25
True-striked Longsword roll 2: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 4 + 1 = 17
True strike has you roll twice and take the better, So that lovely crit is all mine! ... Not that it wouldn't be if I'd rolled normally.
Damage, Slashing IC: 1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 1 = 9
Crit!: 1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 = 7

After his magically charged attack he raises his shield and calls out to the champion, "Well come on you bony bastard, try hitting me!"

[2E] Human Male 1 Bard | HP 10/16 | AC 13 (TAC 11) | Perception +3 | Spells -/1 | Spell Points 6 | Saves 1/2/3 | Hero Points 1/3

For Disarming, the Reflex DC is 10 + Reflex Save bonus. So if the DC is less than 12 Calder succeeded critically and knocked the morningstar away. Otherwise he gets a +2 bonus to disarm until the creature's next turn.

Darius continues to Inspire his allies.

Action 1: Verbal Casting to cast Inspire Courage! You inspire your allies with words or tunes of encouragement. You and all allies in the aura gain a +1 conditional bonus to attack rolls, damage rolls, and saves against fear.

"Calm yourself! Do not let Evil drive you mad!"

Darius will pull out the Journal and attempt Intimidate checks.

Intimidate: 1d20 + 3 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 4 - 2 = 13

"The gods will curse your soul if you continue. Cease this foolishness!"
Intimidate: 1d20 + 3 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 4 - 2 = 25

Paladin 1 (HP: xx/xx) | AC: xx, TAC: xx, (Shield for +2) | Perception +x, F: +x, R: +x, W: +x | Spell Pool: xx | Hero Points: 1/11

Worried that his god has forsaken him, Flint swings with everything he has until the very end:

ATK 1: 1d20 + 3 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 3 + 1 + 1 = 17 for DMG if hit: 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (6, 5) + 3 = 14
ATK 2: 1d20 + 3 + 1 + 1 - 5 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 1 + 1 - 5 = 6
ATK 3: 1d20 + 3 + 1 + 1 - 10 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 1 + 1 - 10 = 3

Under a flurry of well timed attacks the horrible creature wilts. It's foul powers no match for the fury of Flnt Thunderstrike. Darius conjures up memories of its former life.
"I hate this new existance. But Urgathoa has granted me new life... to seek revenge against my killers!"

However this leaves it open to a massive strike from Ogren Wai and finally it falls to the ground!

As the dust settles you hear a low moan from the hole under the floor boards. Down the bottom you find your missing pathfinder... Nelfurhin Zor. It takes a bit of work, and quite a bit of pain (for she has a broken leg) but you manage to get her to the inn, and then up out of the sinkhole that claimed the area.

From her you learn that she too was a former slave. "Wennel helped me to find my bearings after being freed with no money. We stayed friends but for the last two months, became focused. Wennel insisted he was close on proving that several abductions around Absalom were connected to a secretive cell of slave traders..."

She sighs "He was determined to expose the cell. Even if it meant its members might try to silence him. When he unexpectedly appeared at my home a few days ago.. I opened my door to him, but found him that reanimated husk."

Back at the Grand Lodge, Valsin thanks your for you help and offers a small reward and a dinner with some venture captains.

Playtest Character 1

Even the cold-hearted Calder can't make any snide comments at Wennel's fate. "He died doing what he thought was best. That's a death any of us could strive for. It's too bad he came back as an insane zombie priest and kidnapped you and stuff." He helps Nelfurhin hobble along out of the inn and ties her into the rope so he and the others can haul her up out of the sinkhole. "Hold tight now. We'll be outta here soon."

Later, he accepts venture-captain Valsin's reward, but asks if the dinner is optional. "I'm not one for fine dining, Captain. Thanks for the job though. Let me know if you have more work that needs doing."

[2E] Human Male 1 Bard | HP 10/16 | AC 13 (TAC 11) | Perception +3 | Spells -/1 | Spell Points 6 | Saves 1/2/3 | Hero Points 1/3

"Your revenge threatens to consume you, like my uncle Virgil." Darius starts as he watches Ogren assault him. "But rest easy, the Pathfinder Society will complete your mission. Rest easy, now."

Darius will use his magic to ease Nelfurhin's immediate pain, although there is little he can do to help her broken leg, or the grief of a lost friend. "I've known too many with good intentions who have fallen astray. I am glad to hear of the good things he did in life. At least now he can finally rest."

Darius gladly takes the offer for dinner. "The Kolphan family does all it can to right the wrongs of man kind. But we must understand the limits of our abilities!"
