Round 1
Mayze gives Calvarot a quick glance to see if he's still standing after the shot, then lets an arrow fly at the enemy at KK32.

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
+4 Dex, +1 Enhancement, +2 Spirit
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
+2 Str, +2 Spirit

After the shot she steps north (down on the map) a few feet, giving her raider companion a clear path to go after their foe if he so chooses...assuming the foe lives through the arrow.

Mayze's arrow strikes the skull-helmed rider. He slumps in the saddle.

Round 2

Araden, Tomin
Enemies(bald-bearded at dd,38 and rifleman at kk,32)
Draught, Mayze, Zazz

Araden grimaces as he sees his intended target fall to the ground, but he lines up the shot and tries to take it anyway. Getting up and pulling out the pistol would just take too long... Firing on the enemy at (dd,38).

Attack: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 6 - 4 = 3
Damage: 1d12 ⇒ 8

A plume of smoke and a flash accompany the trigger pull, but there is no projectile. Araden curses as he bats away the fumes and drops the faulty firearm, prepared to draw his revolver and continue the fight.

Tomin charges the man laying on the ground (cc37).

attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12 Let's hope the prone penalty helps this low roll.
damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (3, 3) + 4 = 10

Tomin reaches the unseated rider as he is attempting to get to his feet, but misses with his blade. The bald bearded man in ragged hides draws a large combat knife from the small of his back. He takes a defensive pose.
He whistles sharply then bellows "Oonwin!", but neither horse nor still-living respond.

The rifleman trailing the lead horse (now gradually slowing) taps the side of his rifle. The cord whirrs taut, then pulls the staggered Calvarot over - dragging him down the rise. The rifleman then yells at the slowing horse... "Hyah! Go go!" .. and the horse begins to pick up speed again.

(added labels indicating the height of the rise to the map... a little late. Tomin, with terrain and one double movement square going up where the rise is less than 5' high, it would take at least 50' of movement to get to him. I used the roll for AoO.)

Zazz sees the winding machine and thinks of a splattered Calvarot being dragged for miles. Realizes he needs to hold up the rider, the steed or both.
Is the.. hookshot? for lack of better term, connected to the rider? or just being held? Is the rider bound to the sled as well?
Two different sets of actions depending on the cirumcstances.
If gun is not bound to the rider, or the rider is not bound to the sled then option A.
If bound to the rider and bound to the sled then option B.
Perc check if needed to see if bound to sled or bound to rider: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Option A: Swift actoin to stare at HH,23 enemy. and in an attempt to have him drop his weapon or fall out of the sled casts Hideous laughter. Then move action to get as close to the hopefully disabled person so he can try to work the harpoon, and capture for questioning.
Due to stare, -2 vs Will Saves, Spell DC of 14, 2 round length.

Hideous Laughter:
This spell afflicts the subject with uncontrollable laughter. It collapses into gales of manic laughter, falling prone. The subject can take no actions while laughing, but is not considered helpless. After the spell ends, it can act normally. On the creature's next turn, it may attempt a new saving throw to end the effect. This is a full round action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. If this save is successful, the effect ends. If not, the creature continues laughing for the entire duration.

A creature with an Intelligence score of 2 or lower is not affected. A creature whose type is different from the caster's receives a +4 bonus on its saving throw, because humor doesn't “translate” well.

Option B: Swift action to the HH,23 fellow to activate Stare. Move action to 21,ee (I think that works for the cone requirments, if not adjust if possible) and cast Colour Spray in an attempt to stun and hold up the horse and the hookshot guy. Hookshot guy -2 vs will saves, Spell DC of 14, 15ft cone

Colour spray:

A vivid cone of clashing colors springs forth from your hand, causing creatures to become stunned, perhaps also blinded, and possibly knocking them unconscious. Each creature within the cone is affected according to its HD.

2 HD or less: The creature is unconscious, blinded, and stunned for 2d4 rounds, then blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, and then stunned for 1 round. (Only living creatures are knocked unconscious.)

3 or 4 HD: The creature is blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, then stunned for 1 round.

5 or more HD: The creature is stunned for 1 round.

Sightless creatures are not affected by color spray.

As the rifleman on the sled passes Zazz, he begins laughing uncontrollably. He loses his grip on the grapnel rifle, and tips over....
The sled turns on its side - his boots are somehow fastened to it.

Araden leaps to his feet as he draws his pistol and takes aim at the man being ganged up on by Mayze and Tomin. Although he knows getting a good shot in amongst the fighting is unlikely, he pulls the trigger.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 7 - 2 - 4 = 4
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 8
As expected, the bullet doesn't strike the target, instead flying over the heads of all three combatants.

The bald raider starts to whistle again for the horse when Mayze's fist cracks him hard between the shoulder blades.
He angrily blurts out... "Wasteland trash! You've no idea...", and moves - attempting to slip around to grab unarmed Mayze, and put a knife to her throat. He nearly gets his arm around her neck, but she slips free from his grip.

AoO for Tomin and Mayze for movement

The now-slowing horse drags the laughing rifleman another 20' feet or so - turning a bit south.
Captain Timney has come from hiding, and moves to corral the horse.

"The ones who ambushed the supply convoy were dressed the same, and used these..." (she gestures to indicate the grapnel rifle and sled) ".. in the attack against us." Her words make it clear this is the convoy you were sent to recover... including the destroyed and burned wagon.

Araden calmly and routinely reloads his revolver and musket after the fight is over, then slides the musket back into Titan's scabbard and walks over to the others. He raises an eyebrow at Mayze as he lights a cigarillo. "Cry your pardon, lady, but what are you saying? 'Mia amiko,' 'fek artoj'...?" He shakes his head. "Dunno much about what folks here say, but can't say I've heard anyone talk quite like you..."

The gunslinger looks over to the burned wagon and sighs as he realizes this probably means they won't get much pay, if any. "Well, there'd be water if gods willed it..."

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Calvarot opens his eyes... the exhales as if "put off" by being brought back from the dead... again. "Yeah yeah... You can put that magic stick right back wherever you pulled from, princess."

Captain Timney breathes a sigh of relief, and suggests escorting the Okorn militia survivor back so they can continue.
Calvarot sits up, and looks around. "If you are all willing to get yourselves killed for that @#*& Lachlan... that's on you. I'll take her back to Happytown, and then I'm done."

Draught:

Reverse-engineered (RE Tech) = timeworn in this campaign. Tech made with sub-par (but available) materials.

Both the rifles and sleds are reverse-engineered technology. You have a solid understanding of the rifles...

Autograpnel (1d8+6/20×3) 30 ft. range, 20 capacity, 1 charge usage, 10 lbs. Slow-firing
(quoted from PRD)
An autograpnel looks like a rifle with a small adamantine spike protruding from its barrel. When fired, an autograpnel launches the spike with a muffled bang. The spike trails an incredibly strong and thin metal cable behind it. An instant after the spike punches into a solid target, tiny spurs lance out of it, anchoring the spike in place. An autograpnel's cord is long enough to allow the grapnel to reach its maximum range of 300 feet, and the internal retraction motors are strong enough to hold up to 500 pounds of weight. If the grapnel misses its target, it can be rewound into the gun as a standard action; reattaching the grapnel to the gun barrel is a move action.

An autograpnel strikes with an effective Strength score of 22 for the purposes of determining damage. If it strikes a creature, it remains lodged in the target and connected to the rifle and its wielder by the metal cord. This cord has AC 12, hardness 10, and 20 hp. A successful DC 32 Strength check is required to snap the cord. If the wielder retracts the cord while it's attached to a creature, the autograpnel attempts a pull combat maneuver check with a CMB of +16. If used against objects, an autograpnel can pull an item that weighs 25 pounds or less back to the user as a full-round action, or it can pull a heavier object that weighs no more than 100 pounds back to the user at a speed of 20 feet.

When attached to a solid object, the gun's retraction rate can be set to maintain a taut line while the gun is attached to a harness worn to aid climbing checks.
(end quote)
-----

The sleds employ some anti-gravity technology, but you do not fully understand how it works. What you are able to understand, is that both the sleds and the soles of the boots worn by the riflemen use a ionic bond (like Ion tape) to adhere and release.
-----

Both Autograpnels and the sleds would require a military lab to craft.

Mayze gives the gunslinger her friendliest, and grittiest smile, "Just a bit of nomad Can't (or Esperanto if we're being technical ;)). Little bit of this and that I picked up over the years trading with folk. Amiko means we're tight like nuts on a bolt, and fek artoj just means they're...people I don't much care for..."

"They were in the wrong place, wrong time. Heard something they shouldn't have at the pick-up site... the bunker at Hirogdin."
After a moment's silence he apparently realizes he has not answered Zazz's questions.
"The supplies were taken to our camp down south. You might as well forget about the haul though. Sarge Kurstein's got you outmanned, and outgunned." The corner of his mouth twitches as he stifles a reflexive smirk.

Draught looks around at her allies. "What should we do with these two? I have no issue with ending them if necessary, but would not want to offend any of my traveling companions."

"Gave my word I'd give him a swift and perminant death, as he requested. The other fellow, we could question, send him along with his companion, or send him to town. Though that could be hazardous for the town."

"If we let them go they will just go back to killing, and as Zazz said, we have an agreement to put this one out of his misery. I say be done with it and lets move on."

"I am agreeable with this. The one you promised death to is yours." Draught draws her pistol and shoots the one who did NOT ask to be killed in the head, point blank.
pistol damage, crit: 4d8 ⇒ (5, 6, 8, 2) = 21 plus acid: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 1, 3) = 9 DC 40 Fort save to not die if the damage didn't do it. I hope Draught doesn't come off too bloodthirsty, but she is actually not at all, she just believes in efficiency.

After the two captive raiders are eliminated and set to fire, Calvarot and the others hit the trail back to Okorn. You know the general direction the other ambushing raiders went with the supplies, and the ruts from the overladen wagon are clear enough to follow.
You head south with a few hours of decent daylight remaining. For now, their path is the same as if one were traveling to Nephyx.

Personally claiming any of the loot, or community chest for now? (you have another horse now for hauling stuff)

Araden mostly waited to the side during the interrogation, looking over the new loot and wondering what some of it did. Sure are a lot of strange things hereabouts. Unless anyone stops him, he takes the masterwork sawback dagger (which I'm imagining to look something like this) and straps its scabbard to his thigh. He looks at the autograpnels and hover sleds, but doesn't know how they work, so he leaves them alone.

After going over the gear, he sidles over to the others with a lit cigarillo about in time to see the end of the conversation. As the others debate over who should kill the prisoners, Draught finally executes one. "Abadar's golden--!" Araden hurriedly draws his pistol and fires it into the head of the other man--the one who did want to be killed. "Gods above, woman, give some warning!"

Damage: 4d8 ⇒ (8, 4, 8, 5) = 25 DC 35 to survive the coup de grace if the damage didn't kill him

Araden stares wide-eyed at Draught for a few more moments, then holsters his revolver and walks away, hands in the air. "Let's get moving. We won't make any money turning back now."

The gunslinger claps Timney on the shoulder and blows a ring of smoke into the air. "It's okay, friend. Holding the horses is an important position. They're like to run off at the first sign of trouble without someone calming them down. Used to be in charge of it myself."

Finally, he goes over to the new horse, calms it down, and mounts up on Titan. "Well, you folks ready to ride? Figurative speaking, of course," he adds, realizing again he's no longer in a group of horsemen.

Araden can have the Sawback dagger
Before we leave, I'll the body of the one I interrogated and scatter the bones a little as I promised as a somewhat preventitive measure agianst revival. and bury the burned workers we weren't able to rescue. --- unless we wish to hurry much faster in which case I'll just bury him, his friend, and the dead folks on the rocks

"Yes let us depart, and attempt to recover items."

The smoke from the fires of the dead fades from view behind you, and the horizon to the south is a mass of indistinct tannish smudges - gritty dust caught in the gusting crosswinds of the mountain pass. The temperature finally stops rising as the sun falls behind the ridge to your right.

The near mountains on either side are ribboned with ruined paths cut along the eroding towers of rock facing you. Along the paths are also what's left of small caves - most have been worn down to shallow alcoves by decades of wind blasting sand.

Draught makes a (relatively obvious) observation about her surroundings. "This would be a good place for an ambush. We should be cautious."
