Petronicus Krupt III |
Petronicus rather ungracefully spits a mouthful of cockroaches. "Ach! They taste of iron and dust! By Iomedae's perfect t!+%, get them off me!" he curses loudly as he steps away and pulls out some alchemical fire of his own.
Move action and draw alchemist's fire, unless you allow me to "draw it as part of my move", in which case I also throw the alchemist's fire: ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14,damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Saarai Shae |
Sorry, didn't realize you were waiting on me.
Saarai throws a second vial of acid at the swarm, hoping to dissipate its numbers. In the chaos of battle, her throw is inaccurate.
ranged touch: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 81d6 ⇒ 3
if needed, miss direction: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Yggdrar |
Seeing the swarm of insects flood from the desiccated husk, and quickly skitter over Petronicus, he also produces a torch from his back and strikes it with a tindertwig from his pocket. Swishing the lit torch back and forth and barking angrily at the roaches.
Richard M. Harris |
@ Crack-Jawed, ok so you will have to spend your second move action drawing the flint and steel (and dropping your weapon,) and then lighting a torch with a flint and steel is a full-round action. So that will take up your second round action
@ Yggdrar, similar situation. Move action to draw the torch, move action to draw the Tindertwig, and then Standard action in Round 2 to light it
Richard M. Harris |
2 vials of acid and a vial of alchemists fire fly down the hallway and all miss wildly.
The alchemists fire from Old Iron
miss direction: 1d8 ⇒ 4
smashes into the wall next to the swarm having a small effect.
The acid from Molos
miss direction: 1d8 ⇒ 8
lands in the square between Molos and Old Iron dealing 1 point of damage to each of them and the swarm
and Saarai's flask of acid smashes into the opposite wall and has a small effect on the swarm.
After the smattering of alchemical goodies the swarm advances forward overtaking Molos and Petronicus.
Swarm Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Molos Save vs Distraction: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Petronicus Save vs Distraction: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Both of them take 4 points of damage are overcome with the roaches crawling over their bodies and are Nauseated for 1 round You each get a single move action
Molos Voren |
My fire resistance should take care of the one point of alchemist's fire, DM.
Molos moves in the opposite direction from the swarm, as far as he can make it in his nauseated condition.
Old Iron Tyr |
See that Molos takes no damage from the fire, Old Iron scoots back and aims his next alchemist's fire at the part of the swarm in Molos' square.
Alchemist's Fire: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Evad Alacar |
Not counting this fight and I might have missed some but I think I had Wand of CLW on everyone who had been damaged previously.
With no way to effectively deal with the swarm, Evad instead, casts guidance on the tiefling woman again.
Guidance on Saarai
Saarai Shae |
Saarai holds her last flask and waits until her companions clear the swarm before throwing it.
delay until the others are out, then throw.
acid flask: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 201d6 ⇒ 5
miss direction if needed: 1d8 ⇒ 1
Richard M. Harris |
As all those in the swarm flee in opposing direction the acid and fire coming flying in. The acid flask lands squarely in the middle having a massive effect and the alchemist's fire crashes into the wall sealing a small amount of damage.
The swarm is starting to scatter but is still holding together. It advances towards the bulk of the party.
The swarm envelopes Saarai, Old Iron, Evad, and Switch. Dealing 6 points of damage! Old Iron and Saarai fight off the nausea and may act normally. Evad and Switch suffer from the bugs crawling on them and are Nauseated for 1 round.
1d6 ⇒ 6
Fort Save for Saarai: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Fort Save for Old Iron: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Fort Save for Evad: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Fort Save for Switch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Everyone else may now take their round 3 actions, and Saarai and Molos can take their Round 4 Actions
Saarai Shae |
Saarai grimaces as she exits the swarm, hoping the others will have acid or fire to burn them.
She takes her last flask of acid and throws it once everyone is clear.
acid flask: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 5 + 1 = 261d6 ⇒ 2
miss direction, if needed: 1d8 ⇒ 1
crit?: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 5 + 1 = 231d6 ⇒ 1 3 dmg total if it is a crit.
Evad Alacar |
Nauseated and disgusted Evad runs from the swarm. As he retches and flicks roaches off of him. He wonders why he was so stupid to get to near the swarm.
Petronicus Krupt III |
Petronicus wipes the sick from his mouth as he finally stops spewing out his food.
"That was disgusting," he mutters.
Realizing he is still holding the vial of alchemist's fire, he advances down the hallway, trying to avoid the puddles of upchuck he left behind.
Rounding the corner he flings the vial at the swarm.
Move action; ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6; wow; bounce direction: 1d8 ⇒ 1
"Crack-jawed" Ahto Ulrych |
Ahto strikes the flint with the small steel bar, sending sparks at the head of his torch.
"Light torches if you have them. We may be able to chase the rest of the swarm away," he says to no one in particular.
Richard M. Harris |
Petronicus's vial falls just short of the swarm dealing splash damage to the swarm and to Old Iron 1 point of Acid Damage to Old Iron.
The swarm moves towards the corner and Saarai lets her last vial fly landing square in the middle of the swarm destroying a good portion and the last few bugs go skittering away.
We are now out of init
"Crack-jawed" Ahto Ulrych |
Ahto stops trying to light the torch as the last remaining roaches scatter for the corners.
He exhales a long sigh, then returns the unlit torch to his pack, and the flint and steel back to his pouch.
Petronicus Krupt III |
Petronicus nods at the tiefling's question and double-checks his back to make sure. "I have one more vial of alchemist's fire, but that is all." Still wincing and visibly nauseous from the beetles, the Chelaxian man pulls his healing wand from his bandolier and hands it to Ahto.
"Mind touching me up a bit, sir?"
Wand of CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Old Iron Tyr |
Old Iron pats his belt. "Two alkali flasks left here." His mouth twists into a craggy frown. "Last time I ran into a swarm, I was the only one with any countermeasures. Stocked-up after that."
Evad Alacar |
Shaking off the effects of the nausea Evad touches himself with his wand hoping to make himself feel better.
Wand of CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
That's one of Gozreh's creations I'll never understand, just don't see the point of such vermin.
Does anyone need healing, Gozreh's blessing is upon us. Come Storm and Salt, we Will prevail this day. Evad says trying to lift the spirits of the group after the last unsettling encounter seems to have challenged there resolve a bit.
Evad Alacar |
Addressing Petronicus:
Alas I'm not skilled at creation of such items. I wish that I was. My humble beginnings with the Pathfinder Society, were apparently noticed by a fellow Cleric of Gozreh, who provided it to me that I would be even more effective in my service to both the Pathfinder Society and more importantly Gozreh.
You look as though you acquired some wounds from the vermin as well. Allow me to use this gift to heal you as well.
If Petronicus allows it Evad touches him with the wand.
Thank you for your healing power oh Gozreh
Wand of CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Saarai Shae |
"I am also out of anything that affects swarms," Saarai says, glad she hadn't been touched by the disgusting insects. "If we see more...run."
She examines the body once more now that the swarm is gone, then continues their path to the north. take 20 on the corpse, then move north
Petronicus Krupt III |
Petronicus allows Evad to touch him with the wand and smiles as the healing energies restore him. "Thanks for that. So if you bought it from an Abadarian, let's say, does that mean that Abadar just healed me or was it Gozreh?"
Evad Alacar |
Petronicus, I assume you are speaking hypothetically, yes the healing energy is provided by the deity whose cleric created the wand. It's very generous of so many deities to allow so much of their power to be stored in these strange sticks we can so easily tote around. Don't you think?
As I mentioned in this case, the wand was given to me by a fellow Cleric of Gozreh, so we owe Gozreh our thanks here.
Wand bought with 2 PP, so that's my story and I'm sticking too it. lol
Richard M. Harris |
Continuing down the hall way after a brief rest the party finds itself at another crossroad. A quick look to the right will notice 2 doors opposite of each other in the hallway and a third door down a short hall leading back to the Grand Cathedral. To the left is a double door. The hall continues on in the north and east directions. Where to next fair adventurers?
Evad Alacar |
Left is right, and right is wrong! My vote is the double doors to the left. Evad tells the group.
Saarai Shae |
"Looks as good as any!" Saarai agrees as she moves to examine the doors thoroughly. She kneels before the door and gives it an examination before opening it.
take 20 perception: 20 + 9 = 29 30 vs. traps.
Old Iron Tyr |
Old Iron stands near Saarai as she examines the door, absent-mindedly watching the adjacent hallways. "People always say you're supposed to go to the left. Don't know why. Suppose if most people are right handed, they'd would be leadin' with your shield arm on a turn." He mimes holding a shield and turning a corner. "Doesn't explain why wizards like doin' it that way, though."
Evad Alacar |
Evad considers what Old Iron says, Hum, guess it's just an old superstition. My guess is the wizards are hiding behind those with the shields.
Saarai Shae |
Saarai looks into the room with concern.
"Obviously all kinds of magic at work here," she observes. "But what does it do? And how many traps are we looking at?"
The tiefling scans the room thoroughly with detect magic, then looks carefully for any signs of danger before entering.
take 20 perception: 20 + 9 = 29 +1 vs. traps
Richard M. Harris |
A scan across the room with detect magic will reveal many magical sources. Obviously each of the floating balls of fire, 2 of the stone tablets (each in a separate stack. Also on the wall there are two different runes that glow with a magical aura. (the tablets and runes location have been marked on the map.)
Tablets: (these spellcraft checks can be circumvented by digging the tablet out of the stack and using Read Magic, but takes longer obviously)
1 to the right radiates arcane magic
1 to the left radiates divine magic
Runes:
1 across from the door radiates enchantment magic
1 to the right radiates transmutation magic
No further information can be gleaned from this rune with Detect Magic.
Saarai Shae |
spellcraft 1: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
spellcraft 2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
arcana 1: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
arcana 2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
arcana 3: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
"Careful, everyone...there's a Rune Guardian here...a tiny construct with spell resistance," Saarai says.
"Though there are also scrolls here...identify and hold portal. Nice!"
Evad Alacar |
Interesting, hold portal may be useful to hold open one of the sealed doors giving us an extra door to go through, perhaps?
Also interesting about he opposed school vulnerability of this guardian, does anyone have Abjuration and Conjuration or magic to damage it? Like an Acid spell, I've heard those are conjurations?
