Hmm...let's just say that the PCs have imperfection and incomplete information. It's hard to work out everything that's going on in the middle of a fight, and this group is not the best in the knowledge department. You also don't have the luxury of time with a tree-monster eating your allies.
Still waiting on Reiko and Oswin.

![]() |

That's fine. I could have sworn you said it was a Haunt earlier, too, but looking back I don't see it.

![]() |

Reiko will use her spring attack to strike once at the big tree and then jump over the wall on the east side.
attack: 1d20 + 11 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 11 + 1 + 2 = 26
dmg: 1d6 + 2 + 4d6 ⇒ (5) + 2 + (6, 1, 3, 2) = 19
She runs towards the wall and yells "Let's focus on the big tree guys! Or are we doing a tactical retreat?"
acrobatics: 1d20 + 14 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 14 + 12 = 31
with a quick jump she easily clears the wall and stays at the other side, outside of the giant tree's field of vision.
stealth: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (20) + 21 = 41
Not sure if allowed a stealth check as spring attack is a full round action, but I rolled really high ;)

![]() |

Reiko cuts deep into the tree, then deftly retreats by jumpng over the low wall, hoping that it will hide her from the massive tree creature...unfortunately, as she squats behind the wall, she looks up and realises that the towering creature is so tall that the wall is insufficient to conceal her from it.
I was going to give it to you, Reiko, but then realised that that the tree is tall enough that it would still see you over the wall. You do however get a cover bonus to AC.

Wow, my campaigns tab wasn't showing ANY new posts. I happened to see this on the side when I was posting in another game. Sorry!
Oswin will attempt to stand, then move back as far as he can get. That is, if the AOO doesn't just drop him again...
[ooc]I will have to leave my shield behind. Backup sword still on belt, sling still handy for plinking if I really have to. Current AC is just 19 while prone, 23 when standing w/o shield.

![]() |

Note that you don't actually hold shields, they are strapped to your arm, so you don't actually drop them.

"Shield, Heavy; Wooden or Steel: You strap a shield to your forearm and grip it with your hand. A heavy shield is so heavy that you can't use your shield hand for anything else."

How much HP are you currently at?

![]() |

The other good news is that Exiel already took the AoO for you. You now know the tree does not have combat reflexes.
Oswin takes a cue from Exiel and beats a retreat whilst he is able to. Zeeva sees the badly wounded Exiel and moves over to lay a hand on him. His wounds heal as she does so.
1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Thee tree looks around, and fixes its gaze on... 1d4 ⇒ 4 Ignatious.

Fortunately for him, the creature mistimes its bite and misses.

Am I grappled, or did it just move me? What is the ground made of?

![]() |

Oswin stands his ground and casts a spell. A being of blue force, in the likeness of an Iomedean warrior appears in front of the tree creature.
In the open square to the right of Ignatius.
The spiritual warrior swings its sword at the monster!
Attack (my BAB plus WIS): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Damage?: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Well Reiko, this ally does provide you a flanking buddy! Had I realized how hard this thing was, I would have done this sooner.

![]() |

Ignatious, you were just moved. You're not grappled. The ground is worked stone.
Reiko, you will need to delay after Oswin if you want to flank with his spiritual ally.

![]() |

I'm going to try to draw an AoO by circling around the creature a little (Up 1, Left 2)then cast Stone Shape, trying to rip up that stone to create (a max of 18 cubic feet) worth of stone tendrils/ropes/chains around and over it's "feet/roots". The goal is to pin it down for a little bit.
It's up to you, but I was thinking trying to go for a bunch around 2 inches thick <Hardness 8, HP 30 or Break DC 24>

![]() |

So...I've been keeping track of the GM's random rolls for the tree's target...and I've concluded 2 things: the range of the tree's roots is a whooping 60ft! Also, the GM has been rolling to see whether the tree targets Zeeva as well! I was one of the 4 he was rolling for, but Zeeva was excluded because she was 65ft away from the tree.
Oswin, it looks like you can also move your spiritual ally each round after the first round as a swift action. Might be a good idea to move it around to try and eat the tree's AoO. It should be immune to the damage, but will free me up to charge in.
Peri, any chance of you hasting us again next turn?

I'll let you replicate the effects of a soften Earth and Stone spell, but its bite will not be affected, and it can use its action to try and break the stone. I don't think you can achieve much more than that with a 2ft thick obstacle against a 15ft tall creature.
Bite of Opportunity: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (13) + 18 = 31
Damage!: 2d6 + 15 ⇒ (2, 3) + 15 = 20
The creature leans over and takes a bite out of Ignatious as he turns his back on the creature and moves away. Ignatious responds with a quick prayer as he places a hand on the ground. The stone floor ripples and buckles beneath the tree-monsters, then shapes itself around the tree's roots in an attempt to bind the creature.
tree's reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Ignatious stares in shock and amazement as the tree manages to nimbly shift its roots around and prevent the moving stone from binding it! Truly this must surely be one of the most agile trees in all of Golarion!

Exiel looks in wonder and amazement at the tree's great feat of dexterity, and briefly wonders how he will be able to live down the fact that his most fearsome foe to date has been a tree.
"Thank you, Miss Foxglove. However, I'd ask that you stand a little further back. That tree appears to have a phenomenal reach with its roots, and I suspect that even at this distance, you are in rather abit of danger."
With that, he lays a hand quickly on himself, sending healing energy into his body, and then moves forward once more to engage the tree creature.
LoH: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
I've already moved my token since I'm the next person up. I've also added my healing. Let me know if I hit!
Since it took an AoO on Ignatious, he doesn't get one on me, right?

![]() |

Reiko jumps over the wall again and attacks the tree using spring attack.
acrobatics: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17
attack: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 11 + 2 = 27
sneak dmg: 1d6 + 2 + 4d6 ⇒ (2) + 2 + (3, 6, 5, 4) = 22
She ends up behind the wall and will use it as cover.
Will toss in an extra attack next round

![]() |

Exiel: yes you hit, and yes the tree does not get an attack of opp against you.
Reiko, I'm treating that wall as a low 5ft tall wall. With that acrobatics check, you will not be able to get over the wall, especially since the haste spell has worn off. In fact, without a running start, you take a penalty and fall prone from the attempt. However, you can stand up again as a move action and finish your turn there. No attack of opportunity for standing since the tree already took on against Ignatious. You still get cover from the wall you are behind.
Exiel bravely (or foolishly) moves back into the fight and gets a stab in just before Peri's spell wears off on him too. Reiko attempts to jump over the wall she is standing against, but botches the jump and lands on her butt. She quickly gets back to her feet, and is probably grateful to Ignatious for distracting the tree so that she can do this safely.
Oswin stands his ground and conjures a spiritual ally, which takes a swing at the tree, but the spiritual ally fails to score a hit.
Zeeva heeds Exiel's words and retreats a few steps further back, but continues to watch cautiously.
The tree looks around and decides to attack...1d6 ⇒ 3 Oswin again.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27
Damage 1: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Pull 1: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (4) + 18 = 22
Attack 2: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13
Damage 2: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Pull 2: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (17) + 18 = 35
Attack 3: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30
Damage 3: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Pull 3: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (3) + 18 = 21
It strikes Oswin twice, and heaves him another 20ft closer to the action, but does not get him close enough to take a bite.
It then looks at Exiel, Ignatious and the spiritual being...1d3 ⇒ 3 and takes a quick snap at Ignatious!
Bite!: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19
Damage!: 2d6 + 15 ⇒ (1, 4) + 15 = 20
But it fails to hit the cleric.

In that case, you can take a DC20 reflex save to catch on to the edge of the wall, or just land and take a standard action. This would have resolved before the spiritual ally was cast. A 17 is not going to get you across that wall.

![]() |

dmg: 1d6 + 2 + 4d6 ⇒ (2) + 2 + (3, 2, 3, 5) = 17
Not sure how the rules go with flanking and behind hard cover. Would Reiko provide flanking from her location? Would it be harder for the tree to hit her if she was on other other side of the gap? So 3 squares to the left

![]() |

Oswin directs his spirit warrior to move 10' to the right (still in front of the tree) and then it strikes again!
Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Damage?: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
If the trees uses its AOO, Oswin will take the opening to cast a healing spell. He then draws his cold iron sword and moves behind the downed creature (2 squares diagonally to the "NE").
CSW: 3d8 + 7 ⇒ (1, 6, 3) + 7 = 17
Now converting Daylight to CSW. I am running out of high level spells... I might try to CDG this thing so that we can channel safely.

![]() |

Im pretty sure Im dead but Ill check for sure when I get home.

![]() |

A quick check shows that you should still not only be alive, but conscious for the moment. Your stat line shows 28 HP. Two turns ago the tree hit you for 20 damage. Last turn it went after me. Now, if you do fall, I might be able to use your breath of life scroll. Although if I have to move to reach you, and use a move to get it... I'm hoping the spiritual ally will at least eat one or two AOO's before the tree realizes it can't be harmed physically. In that time you can convert a high level spell to heal yourself. Right now, I really hope that we get a night's rest before the next fight!

![]() |

Beckett, when I said that Ignatious had taken 42 damage, I meant in total, you're down 42 hp from your full hp. Ignatious is alive, but wounded.
Peri, from tha map, you will need to leave 2 people out of the haste spell. Your options are:
Reiko, Ignatious and Exiel
Ignatious, Exiel and Oswin
Exiel, Oswin and Peri
Which group are you going to haste?

![]() |

Ok, I had saw that, and then seen that I had taken another 20 for the AoO, and mistakenly thought I was also hit with the Bite for another 20. Also, that's pretty much what I was trying to do with the Stone Shape. Less trap or grapple it and more just pin it down for a few rounds to let us regroup. It's an instantaneous transmutation spell, and I was kind of envisioning basically the equivalent of "cement shoes" for a tree, but with the sort of damage it's hitting us with, I would think that it would probably be able to either attack the stone or make the break DC with ease.

![]() |

Just how badoff does this tree guy look?

![]() |

It's leaking sap from a few places, but does not appear to be slowing down just yet.

![]() |

Woot! Looks like I'm in all 3 possible hasted groups, so I'll proceed as if I am hasted. Thanks Peri!
Exiel grins as he is given another burst of speed and lashes out quickly with his lance.

"Eat that you sonovab!&&@!"

![]() |

I suggest hasting the ones in combat with him. I can do three attacks when im hasted next round

![]() |

Ill withdraw the long way around the vendors to 1 up and 1 right of Oswin.

![]() |

Peri steps up and casts a spell to quicken the actions of Exiel, Reiko and Flamehead, whilst Flamehead withdraws to Oswin's side.
Exiel holds his ground and delivers 2 quick stabs at the tree. The first strike lodges his hooked lance in a chink in the wood, and plunges surprisingly deeply into the tree. As he twists his weapon to extract it, the wood splits along the grain, causing significant damage, but stealing his momentum for the second stab which ends being little more than a half-hearted poke. I really think this creature should have DR against pierceing, but fortunately for you guys, it doesn't.
Reiko darts around nimbly and hacks at the tree, but trips over her foot just a little at the last moment, and does not get enough power behind the swing to penetrate the tough bark. Oswin's spirit warrior also fails to swing hard enough to penetrate the bark, but its movements do distract the tree. Oswin prays to the Inheritor to mend his wounds, and she answers his prayer.
Zeeva heeds Exiel's words and continues to watch from a distance.
The tree-creature looks around at the many little flies buzzing around it, and fixes its attention on 1d6 ⇒ 2 the sneaky ninja trying to hide behind the wall!
Attack 1: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16
Damage 1: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Pull 1: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (12) + 18 = 30
Attack 2: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Damage 2: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Pull 2: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (17) + 18 = 35

Damage: 2d6 + 15 ⇒ (3, 5) + 15 = 23
Fortunately, hiding behind the wall turns out to be one of the best decisions Reiko had ever made. The tree attacks her with roots and maw, but just can't seem to get around the masonry that Reiko is using as a shield. Wow...saved entirely by cover from the wall.

A successful Fortitude save reduces this penalty by half. This penalty does not stack with itself. Apply the highest penalty instead.

Targets: one creature/level, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart
The furthest person you can target can be 45 ft from yourself, but none of the targets can be further than 30ft from another target. Both the 'range' and 'targets' entries limit who you can target with the spell. Put it another way, the AoE is not a 45ft radius around you, but a 30ft diameter circle within a 45ft radius around you.
Reiko is unfortunately 35 ft from both you and Oswin, and even further from Peri.
