PBP GAMEDAY 2: PFS 04-06 The Green Market (levels 5-9)

Game Master SwampTing

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 5–9.

When an ally of the Society reports that her sister's business is being harassed by the Aspis Consortium in the Varisian city of Korvosa, a team of Pathfinder agents is dispatched to the Green Market to assist. What they find there is more than simple strong-arming and intimidation, however. What mysterious forces bring the popular market its unlikely success, and can the PCs stop the Aspis Consortium from gaining control of what could become a lucrative resource for the rival organization?

Peri shudders as Oswin is nearly torn limb from limb pun intended

Shoanti:
"We are only here as protectors, quite like yourself. So I must protect my companion!"

Peri knows that reasoning with fruits and vegetables will probably not amount to much Fruition. She decideds to cast a fireball hoping to assist Oswin in escaping the clutches of the animated produce.

VC Aram Zey:
I am unable to edit maps when away from home "most of the time" If I place the two left most squares from my fireball radius above Oswin I should actually be able to hit both creatures. That would put the center of the spell two squares right from the steps.

Fireball:
School evocation [fire]; Level magus 3, sorcerer/wizard 3
Casting
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (a ball of bat guano and sulfur)
Effect
Range long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
Area 20-ft.-radius spread
Duration instantaneous
Saving Throw Reflex half; Spell Resistance yes
Description
A fireball spell generates a searing explosion of flame that detonates with a low roar and deals 1d6 points of fire damage per caster level (maximum 10d6) to every creature within the area. Unattended objects also take this damage. The explosion creates almost no pressure.

You point your finger and determine the range (distance and height) at which the fireball is to burst. A glowing, pea-sized bead streaks from the pointing digit and, unless it impacts upon a material body or solid barrier prior to attaining the prescribed range, blossoms into the fireball at that point. An early impact results in an early detonation. If you attempt to send the bead through a narrow passage, such as through an arrow slit, you must “hit” the opening with a ranged touch attack, or else the bead strikes the barrier and detonates prematurely.

The fireball sets fire to combustibles and damages objects in the area. It can melt metals with low melting points, such as lead, gold, copper, silver, and bronze. If the damage caused to an interposing barrier shatters or breaks through it, the fireball may continue beyond the barrier if the area permits; otherwise it stops at the barrier just as any other spell effect does.

After receiving multiple healings Reiko feels much better and see's that Oswin could seriously need her help. She jumps over the various stalls and runs up to the first heap of fruit and stabs at it hoping to distract it.

acrobatics: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24

She then winks at Oswin, says "I'll be back shortly" and disappears from sight.
She used a ki point to turn invisible for 7 rounds as a swift action.

Exiel is horrified by the tree's brutalisation of Oswin, and realises that despite the danger, he will need to act quickly and courageously if he wants to save the cleric.

"Hang tight, Oswin! I'm coming!"

He takes a 5ft step to the North and takes a couple of stabs at the large collection of vegetables.

Ignatious, Oswin is in much greater need of healing than Reiko. Wouldn't it be a better idea to move up and channel for Oswin instead? Or if you delay till after Reiko's action in round 2, you can get them both - don't think you can get them both in round 1 though since they were 70ft apart. =(

I think Oswin can channel to heal himself without taking an AoO?

Sorry, work has been hard, and I can't access the map, so it's been a little hard to follow. My intent was to move up closer to the party and heal everyone, but I want to make sure that Foxglove follows me. I see that Reiko is outside the range of Shield Other already (45ft), so that was kind of wasted.

Grand Lodge

Ignatious, I still need you to confirm what you are doing. Zeeva is where she is, but she might follow you on her turn. If you move North on your turn, you can keep Reiko within range of the shield other spell when she moves on her turn. But Exiel is right, you won't be able to heal both Reiko and Oswin on your turn in round 1.

Exiel and Reiko, to avoid confusion, I have moved you back to where you were in round 1, and will move you to your new positions when your actions resolve.

Peri's Caster level check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
Peri's fireball washes over both the creatures...she feels some resistance from the tree-creature, but manages to punch through. However, the flames nonetheless seem to wash over it without leaving a single singed leaf.

Reflex: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
The fruit-ensemble fails miserably at trying to get out of the way of the fireball, but it does not appear as affected by the flames as you think if should have been either.

Waiting on Ignatious to confirm his action. The map you see is where everyone is on your turn, Ignatious. Also, Oswin, you are still conscious, so I need an action from you for round 2.

Have a care for your hp tally though! Also, I think the GM said he needs you to declare your action for round 2 as well. Unless you're waiting to see what Ignatious ends up doing in round 1?

GM: I think in light of what Ignatious did say, it'd be safe to assume that he would move up to heal Oswin, and position himself so that Reiko can move without losing the shield other spell?

Just to clarify, since there seems to be some confusion. My surprise round action was to draw a scroll. I then moved up in Round 1 and Channeled. Healing Oswin isn't even an option. I can't move enough to get close to including him. (about 20ft short). I'll try next round, though. I had been intending to heal everyone (even the aspis) in the break, but wasn't able to post in time. Likewise, I have not even cast Shield Other on Zeeva yet, either, so I'm trying to make sure she doesn't get killed and we auto fail the scenario or something.

Grand Lodge

Border of War map Reign of Winter map

Between Ignatious and Zeeva, Reiko is healed to peak condition, and she confidently charges up to engage the fruit-monster. As she closes in, however, the fruit-monster lashes out at her! (It takes an attack of opp.)

Slam: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27
Slam damage: 2d6 + 11 ⇒ (6, 2) + 11 = 19
Grab: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19
Constrict: 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (6, 5) + 16 = 27

The creature thumps Reiko painfully, but fails to grapple her, and she presses on to play fruit-ninja on the creature, slicing through 2 guavas, 3 oranges and 5 apples that make up part of its body. Then activating her Ki, she fades from sight.

Ignatious grunts as he feels some of the force of the attack on Reiko transferred to his own body.
Reiko takes 10, Igantious takes 9.

Exiel steps up and thrusts his hooked lance at the monster. The first strike misses, but the second one goes in deep, and when he pulls his lance out, it looks like an oversized fruit-kebab.

First attack misses, second hit is a confirmed crit. Surprisingly, it does not appear to have immunity to crits or sneak attacks.

The fruit-monster looks like it may be rather badly hurt, though it's hard to tell. However it is still standing.

Now waiting on Oswin's action. Are you making an attack or trying to get yourself out of there?

Can I make a suggestion that might make things a little less confusing. Instead of the Init as is, if we break it into groups, it tends to run more smoothly, and there is a lot less posting out of order. For example:

Am I grabbed? The fruit mound isn't down yet. Full withdrawl won't help me due to their reach. Channeling undoes a good bit of the work done by our ninja and "palorceror".

Grand Lodge

Border of War map Reign of Winter map

Ignatious: I've tried doing that before, but it gets even more messy as we try to work out who did what before who. For example, if I just did blocks, then Reiko would have lost her Shield Other spell even though she should have kept it.

Oswin: You are not grappled. It needed to hit you in order to make a grab. I just posted all the potentially needed rolls so I could copy and paste the whole thing for each attack. Also, it allows you to see how badly things could have turned out. In your case, if either of the attacks from the fruit mound had hit you, you would have been grappled and constricted as well...and the damage from that would have already killed you.

Some of you may have noticed the status and damage box on the left of the map. If in doubt, refer to it to see what's affecting you and how much damage you've taken.

Oswin swings his blade at the fruit monster, but only hits with the first attack, splitting a few pears and a carrot.

Zeeva, seeing the danger that Oswin is in, steps forward and casts a spell on the fruit-mound.

The plant creatures look around. The tree shuffles forward a little more and sets its eyes on...

dmg: 1d6 + 2 + 4d6 ⇒ (5) + 2 + (3, 5, 2, 6) = 23

If the first attack killed the fruitstack
She moves around to the right of the tree behind the wall, staying out of its reach as she goes. She jumps and saltos over several fruit stacks as she goes.
acrobatics to jump over stacks of fruit: 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (3) + 26 = 29
I don't think the creature can see her behind the wall right? Reiko gets +12 bonus on jumps from the increased movement speed

if Oswin and Exiel kill the fruitstack:

She moves around to the back/north of the tree over the wall staying invisible. She hopes her companions can stay a live a little longer while she got into position.
acrobatics to jump over stacks of fruit or walls: 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (17) + 26 = 43

After a few choice arcane words Peri's hand is covered in frost, ever so quickly the coat of frozen water builds into solid ball. She squints her eyes before winding up and lobbing it softball style at the salad Monster. Snowball (DC 17)I believe plant types can be staggered, but hardly anything else.

Fort save vs snowball: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19

Peri sends a snowball sailing over the invisible Reiko's head and smack into the big fruit-monster. It collapses to the floor, but shortly after, Ignatious moves up and channels a wave of healing energy that causes it to stir once more. 2 quick stabs from Exiel causes it to shudder and slump to the floor once more.

The fruit monster is unconscious, but the fruits and vegetables continue to cling together in the shape of a large beast. Ignatious is now conscious, but he is still prone and has dropped his weapon on the floor.

I assume Reiko will now come out of delay, since the monster is now down.

Reiko moves around to the back of the tree monster easily, poised to strike. The tree creature does not appear to notice her. It does however notice that Oswin is now conscious...

Now need action from Oswin. Remember that you are prone and your weapon is on the floor. You are also roughly as far away from the tree as you were the last time it bit you.

Grand Lodge

Well, you're both conscious... :p

Oswin manages to cast a spell without giving the tree creature any opportunity or opening for an extra attack.

Zeeva grants a quick blessing to 1d2 ⇒ 1 Exiel. Exiel, for the next round, you can choose a d20 and roll twice to take the better result.

The tree shuffles forward and sizes up its options, and decides on...1d4 ⇒ 1 the polearm-wielding upstart who took down its buddy.

It lashes out at Exiel with roots and maw.

Bite: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31

Only one of the roots connects, but that is enough to give it an opening to bite down again on Exiel. It also pulls Exiel closer towards itself, creating an opening for another bite!

Free extra Bite: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (1) + 18 = 19
Damage!: 2d6 + 15 ⇒ (2, 4) + 15 = 21

Fortunately for Exiel, it does not connect.

Exiel, you take 28 points of damage in total.

Peri and Ignatious can declare their actions for round 3, the rest can declare for round 4.

If no one is flanking the tree with Reiko she will not attack. She will wait until someone is threatening it (which might be when it pulls someone in). Because I know (or I as a player think my character knows anyway) that there is a Haunt here. And I don't want to be completely out of channels by the second fight. The rush in and get beat the hell up technique doesn't seem to be working. :)

Ignatious, why does your character think there is a haunt there?

Because I know the site was built on or near a Shoanti sacred site, heard the Aspis agents run in fear saying the place was haunted, heard faint chanting coming from nowhere then a bunch of fruits and vegetables start floating around and then form some sort of creature. Looks like I was wrong, but, we still have to try something different. And now I know. I'm assuming that I would have realized the Invisibility Purge, and didn't see a mage or druidy person appear out of nowhere, that there is something else here we are not seeing causing this.

Sorry Reiko, I'm not adventurous enough to risk taking a full attack from that thing at 6hp (or 11 after a LoH). I figured even if I was hit with an AoO, I would be unconscious but maybe not dead.

Ignatious, the invis purge has a limited range, so I'm not sure we can rule out a mage or druid, but this seems far beyond what a mage or druid can conjure up. Or if there is such a mage or druid, they'd be way beyond what we can deal with since we're barely holding against the plant creatures. I'll heal up and then rejoin the fight. I'm still a little worried about Oswin...

Yes it does, but since he cast it in the 1st fight, and it moves with him, he should have covered just about the entire map as he moved north, or fairly close to the range of a summoning sort of spell, which is why I find that the least likely cause. So would you prefer I cast Liberating Command and Shield Other on you next round or burn another Channel?

I've got some healing I can give myself. And I think I'm out of danger for now. I'd worry about Oswin, personally. If we can get him out of there, we can have Peri pelt that thing with snowballs, and try to take it down with ranged attacks in general. I'll probably go pick up one of the Aspis guys' bows. The tree appears to have a long reach with the roots, but the bite is the main damage dealer. Also, plants aren't generally very mobile so we should be able to wear it down that way.
