PBP GAMEDAY 2: PFS 04-06 The Green Market (levels 5-9)

Game Master SwampTing

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 5–9.

When an ally of the Society reports that her sister's business is being harassed by the Aspis Consortium in the Varisian city of Korvosa, a team of Pathfinder agents is dispatched to the Green Market to assist. What they find there is more than simple strong-arming and intimidation, however. What mysterious forces bring the popular market its unlikely success, and can the PCs stop the Aspis Consortium from gaining control of what could become a lucrative resource for the rival organization?

I misunderstood and thought she was a he. I wasnt trying to be mocking as much as make it clear a rumble in the streets would be a bad idea. :)

For now, Ill just Ready an action to step in the way of anyone that comes to try to attack Foxglove, still unarmed.

My name is not Christopher btw ;). Roger is fine :).

As her move action can Reiko try to blend back into the crowd and stealth?

** spoiler omitted **

Reiko can make the attempt, using the crowd for some concealment, with the normal -10 penalty since they are aware of your presence. Alternatively, you can move out of their line of sight before changing your disguise. The solid brown lines are walls. However, the crowd is thinning, as people have seen the aspis warriors show their weapons and were wierded out by the laughter. They can see that a fight is starting and they are not going to stick around to be caught in it. After this round, you can assume that all by-standers have moved away from the immediate vicinity, so that may affect how useful your disguise will be. Also, keep in mind of where you need and at which point in time to be if you want to get hasted by Peri.

Hmm right you are Aram. I was wondering what the crowd would do.

For her move action from the suprise round, Reiko makes a fancy flip and salto to end up on top of the fruit stand and behind the woman.
acrobatics: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19

Reiko takes the hint of her companion and will wait for her spell to land.

She looks menacingly at the woman who made her act so ridiculous and gestures to her friends to move into a flanking position. One Reiko plans use with great effect.

Reiko delays for the spell and someone to move into a flanking position. Will she have a normal round after the haste lands? If the spell only has the duration of 1 round I should be ok by then I guess?

Can't see the map yet, but here's my plan for when my turn comes up.

Oswin waits until the arcane forces in his team can work their magic. He then calls upon the power of Iomedae to grant him added strength and he moves towards his foes, sword and shield in hand.

So standard action: cast Bull's Strength, move action: draw sword and move closer, adjacent to a foe if I can reach with hasted speed. Preferably to flank with Reiko.

Wow, alot happened since I last checked in! Can't full attack either way, so will just take a move action to unsling my hooked lance, 5ft step North and try to trip the sorceress.

Exiel hefts his longspear, takes a 5ft step to the North and sweeps at the sorceress' legs with the hook on his polearm.

Trip: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

This gets Reiko her flank, and if the trip is successful, she's also flat on the floor (denied dex bonus and ripe for sneak attack).

Can you move me to Zeeva, I can't really tell which one on the map is her, and I was trying to stay near her, then basically Ready an Action to step in and block any attacks coming at her.

Grand Lodge

Border of War map Reign of Winter map

Reiko hops onto the low vegetable stand with ease and moves behind the pesky sorceress. She sees Peri begin to cast a spell and waits for it to go off. (Reiko now on init 13.)

Exiel seizes the initiative and manages to pull the Aspis sorceress' legs out from under her. She lands flat on her back.

The bad news, Reiko, is that you won't be able to reach the sorceress from on top of the stand. The good news is that you can 5ft off the stand and stab her whilst she's prone (with the +4 bonus for prone, and she's denied her dex bonus - meaning lower AC and you will do sneak attack damage).

Zeeva scurries off to the South, content to let you handle matters. As she runs, she mutters, "I wish you luck, Pathfinder." As she does so, she makes a brief gesture towards 1d5 ⇒ 5 Oswin, who feels exceptionally lucky for a moment.

Oswin, if you roll a d20 before the start of Zeeva's next round, you can roll twice and take the better roll. You can change your action if you wish, or decide to keep the good fortune in case you need to make a saving throw.

Peri completes her spell, and the 5 of you start to move a lot faster!

Reiko, you can declare your actions for round 1 now. The sorceress is prone, the 2 men have not acted yet and so are flat-footed. Basically, you can sneak attack any of them this round.

"You should have surrendered when I gave you the chance lady"

Reiko clearly seems to have a personal vendetta against the woman. She takes a 5 foot step and cuts her twice with the wakasashi.

first strike: 1d20 + 11 + 1 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 11 + 1 + 4 + 2 = 37

Critical Sneak attack: 2d6 + 4 + 4d6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 4 + (4, 5, 5, 3) = 29

Seeing the critical hit land Reiko taunts.

"Surrendering would have saved your pretty face perhaps"

second strike from haste: 1d20 + 11 + 1 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 11 + 1 + 4 + 2 = 36
confirm: 1d20 + 11 + 1 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 11 + 1 + 4 + 2 = 31
Critical Sneak attack: 2d6 + 4 + 4d6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 4 + (1, 2, 2, 2) = 21

Reiko has another strike possibility, but will wait to give the woman another chance at surrendering (if she is not already bleeding out).

Instead she uses a ki point to get the third attack against the burly man next to her.

third strike from ki: 1d20 + 11 + 1 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 11 + 1 + 4 + 2 = 22
Sneak attack: 1d6 + 2 + 4d6 ⇒ (2) + 2 + (6, 4, 1, 6) = 21

"Unless you want your companion to die I suggest you both drop your weapons. She is an awfully easy target now."

Grand Lodge

Border of War map Reign of Winter map

Reiko savages the sorceress on the floor with her wakizashi, leaving her very bloodied, but she is still breathing, and fairly livid at her taunts. The black-haired warrior also grunts in pain as Reiko sinks her wakizashi into his back.

Meanwhile, Ignatious pulls back to cover Zeeva whilst Oswin utters a quick incantation, then moves to flank the black-haired warrior with Reiko.

The black-haired warrior looks at the sorceress, and seeing her expression of rage decides it would be best to fight on, at least for now. He pulls out his greatsword and, deciding that Reiko is the most dangerous foe nearby, takes a powerful swing at her!

attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
damage: 2d6 + 17 ⇒ (6, 1) + 17 = 24

The woman on the ground snarls. "Get them! Kill them! Kill that b*%*% especially!" She indicates Reiko as she attempts to cautiously cast a spell.

Cast Defensively: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22
As she completes her incantation, she vanishes from sight.

The white-haired warrior (you suspect it is a dye-job) steps towards Peri, thinking her an easy target, and takes a powerful swing.
attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15
damage: 2d6 + 17 ⇒ (1, 4) + 17 = 22
But he focuses a little too much on power and fails to aim his swing properly.

No trail of blood. As for spring attack, you move up to your speed, which is 60ft for now because of haste. But you need to move at least 10 ft before the attack, and cannot attack an opponent you started adjacent to. It's all in the feat description.

Reiko, note that you are barely within range of Ignatious' spell, and if you move out of the range of the spell, it ends.

Both Ignatious and Oswin call upon their respective patrons for blessings.

As Oswin completes his spell, the sorceress suddenly appears once more. It appears that she had not gone very far at all (she just stood up and took a 5ft step whilst invisbile). She looks startled as her spell is suppressed by Oswin's magic, and spares a moment to spit disdainfully at the black-haired warrior before trying to extricate herself from the situation.

"Alright, Pathfinders, you win. I surrender as well, but remember that you were the aggressors here. Regardless of what was said, it was that harpy shrew," she spits as she points to Reiko, "who was the first to pull a weapon and initiate violence. We only wanted to remind the Foxglove woman of our desire to enter into a business negotiation, and you were the ones to start the violence."

She grits her teeth as she looks at the state of her two companions.

"Let us go now, and we'll leave our equipment behind as recompense."

She pulls a rod and a wand from her belt and sets them on the floor slowly, but she does so carefully as she eyes Exiel's annoying hooked lance (since you are still threatening her).

Will save vs boredom: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Meanwhile, the white-haired thug appears to yawn of all things, and looks at the sorceress with droopy eyes as if only half-paying attention to her. But he does also drop his greatsword.

It looks like their surrender is genuine, but I still need you to declare your actions for round 3, if any. Unless they impact on each other, your actions will not need to be resolved in order.

If you do not post within the next 23 hours, I will assume that you do not take any actions this round, but merely wait to see how things develop from the actions taken by the other members of the party.

Reiko studies the woman to see if she has more possible magic items on her. The rod and wand are surely not the only magical items she has on her. She steps in front of her with her weapon down and looks her over. At the same time this is closer to Ignatious I believe.

Ignatious: Zeeva does follow you, and you are able to position yourself to cast detect magic in a cone that as far as you can tell only includes the sorceress in the AoE. You detect the presence of magic, but can't tell anything more without concentrating for a few more rounds.

You are also pretty sure of 2 things as you observe the Aspis sorceress.
1. She is genuinely surrendering. She's worried that if she carries on, she might get killed.
2. If she were alone with Reiko in a back alley and Reiko was tied up and helpless, only one woman would be walking out of that back alley.

1. She still has her dagger, but...
2. She is still in the process of disarming herself, and...

The sorceress looks unimpressed by Oswin's attempt at diplomacy.

"The Consortium's business is its own, and not the business of you meddling Pathfinders. If your "friend" has not told you why we want to do business with her, then perhaps she does not regard you as a friend despite what you may think."

I'd say that's about a round's worth of interaction, so we'll move on as soon as Peri posts.

Ignatious could easily see that Reiko is quite bloodied by the single greatsword attack from the brute (at 14 hitpoints out of 38). She is holding her side to stem the flow of blood while looking daggers at the sorceress. That sorceress might still have some tricks up her sleeve.

The sorceress in fact does not attempt anything funny (at least for this round). She continues to disarm herself under your watchful eyes.

Evetually she finishes and stands up, having laid the following on the ground:
A small pouch
A rod
A wand
A dagger
A ring

The men lay down their swords, bows, quivers and cloaks.

"Alright, can we go now?" she asks testily.

DC 1 sense motive check:

She is fantasizing about the ways she will one day kill Reiko. Slowly.

As Ignatious concentrates on his spell, he suddenly hears the faint sound of chanting and some of the market produce moving on their own!

Ignatious' initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
However, he is unable to react or respond in time!

Before any of you can reply to the Aspis sorceress, you hear a commotion to the North. Despite being indoors, a terrible wind begins blowing through the Green Market, shaking the tree in the plaza to the North as well as the many decorations placed in the various stalls. Fruit and vegetables in carts, bins, and baskets shift about as the ground shakes as if an earthquake were hitting. Seemingly at once, several of the previously inanimate objects affected by the strange weather spring to life!

Hundreds of pounds of vegetables, flowers, and other produce rise from the adjoining stalls to fly dangerously fast in a swirling tornado around the center court. They coalesce into the hulking form of vegetation with potatoes for eyes, a carrot for a nose, and sinuous grape and pumpkin vines threaded through its broccoli-blotched body. At the same time, the tree on the north end of the haunt's area animates and uproots itself.

The Aspis sorceress and warriors cry out and start to pull away. The sorceress in particular utters an oath and says, "Ye gods, this place is cursed! To hell with this damned market, it's not worth the trouble!" As she says this, she pushes past the lot of you and starts to run towards the exit to the South, her warriors hot on her heels.

You can try to take your attacks against them if you wish, but they appear to just want out of this place now.

Given that haste is rounds per level, it seems like we might still have it for a couple more. Bull's Strength should still be up for me, as it's a 7 minute spell right now.

Oswin looks at the two monstrosities and grimaces.

He then moves closer to engage them with sword and shield.

Double move. 5' up and to the right first, then straight ahead for a total of 40'. If haste is still up, move me 10' farther on, to the square just "north" of the little well/fountain thing on the map. Thanks!

You still have about 4 rounds of haste each. Exiel has 5 since he acted before Peri in the round that she cast her spell. Bull Strength is still up for you as well, Oswin.

Reike ponders whether to trip the sorceress, but her judgements tells her to just ignore her.

Reiko will stay close to Ignatious because she desperately needs healing for dealing with these monstrosities.

Seeing that the sorceress dropped a ring she picks it up and puts in on hoping that there are some defensive magics on it.

After putting the ring on she stands next to Ignatious and asks him "I could use some refreshing rain Ignatious if you please. That sword cut hurt quite a bit."

I think that is all she can do this round. Do I get an idea what the ring would do if I activated it?

Grand Lodge

Border of War map Reign of Winter map

You can't activate it if you don't know what the heck it is. If it's a constant effect item, however, you don't need to activate it. Also, you can't put on the ring yet. You moved 10 ft (move action) and picked up the ring (your standard action since you already took a move action). You can put it on next turn. Due to a hard corner, there is no way for you to take a 5ft step and pick up the ring. Sorry Reiko.

Waiting on Exiel now.

Meanwhile, the creatures to the North roar in a language foreign to all your ears save one.

Peri:
The language is Shoanti, and the creatures are roaring "This is Shoanti land! You will bring no war here! My people will be avenged!"

The tree-creature looks at Exiel and Oswin in turn...
Who does it focus on?: 1d2 ⇒ 2

It shifts forward slowly, and it looks like that will be all it does...but suddenly three of its roots extend rapidly towards Oswin, seeking to pummel and pull at him!

Attack 1: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
Damage 1: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Damage 3: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Pull 3: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (15) + 18 = 33

It strikes Oswin twice, dealing 22 damage and with each successful strike heaves him a full 10ft closer to himself (20ft total)!
Having successfully pulled his target close enough, it suddenly leans over towards Oswin, and its bark parts to show a jagged maw that it uses to bite down at Oswin! The sudden movement seems to give it an advantage on its attack as well!

This thing is nastier than I first realised!

Free Bite!: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (13) + 18 = 31
Damage!: 2d6 + 15 ⇒ (2, 3) + 15 = 20

Oswin takes a total of 42 damage from the onslaught!

Who does it focus on?: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Oh...ouch...please survive this!

Slam 1: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25
Slam damage 1: 2d6 + 11 ⇒ (5, 5) + 11 = 21
Grab 1: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (15) + 16 = 31
Constrict 1: 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (3, 1) + 16 = 20

Slam 2: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18
Slam damage 2: 2d6 + 11 ⇒ (6, 3) + 11 = 20
Grab 2: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (14) + 16 = 30
Constrict 2: 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (5, 6) + 16 = 27

(VERY) fortunately for Oswin, the smaller creature fails to bash through his armor, and he manages to fend off the attacks. He gets the impression, however, that had the creature managed to hit even once, it would not have ended well for him!

You all get the feeling that you need to act quickly if you are to save Oswin!

Everyone declare actions, Peri and Ignatius for round 1 and Reiko, Exiel and Oswin declare for round 2.

Oswin, I don't like to softball things, but I don't like to kill players either, so I will give you a fair warning: it should be obvious that these things have reach. Don't forget about it and beware of AoOs.
Exiel...um...just be careful.
