Lambs to the slaughter...
I know.
Levin rolls his eyes when their cover is blown. This idiot's going to get himself killed.
And you should let him, came the coldly indifferent reply.

"CLAK! Not right. Beware!" The birdman pulls his crossbow back into position, and waits to see what happens after the grappling.

Thorval, I´m going to roll your bluff agains the warrior sense motive to see if you can grapple him before he realizes what´s going. I use this when someome want to do something "undetected" against someone paying attention
Thorval bluff: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10
Warrior sensse motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Thorval moves toward one of the warrior in a casual way, or at least he thinks so. Between that, and Clak-clik pulling his crossbow it´s clear for the warriors their deception has been uncovered, so they go for her weapons to attack.
But Thorval is too quick for them, and he grapple one of them before he can even pick his axe.

Let me out, the voice says. I can help.
Out? What do you mean, out? I think you should stay right where you are for now. The voice had never mentioned leaving before, and though Levin doesn't know exactly what that would entail he isn't sure he wants to find out in the middle of a tense situation. "Tell your friend to stop struggling," he says to the magically dazed but otherwise unharmed warrior.

Speaking as the wizard, it is all about battlefield control.
Valore Edasseril |
"well this is unfortunate. Perhaps one of you can stabalize these men? Last thing we need is an implication of manslaughter. "
Chup "Spoony" Spooner |
Chup stands there for a moment, stunned, not knowing whether he should run or hide or both. "You just... murdered them." He shakes his head, snapping out of it, and rushes over to tend to their wounds.

"Help!" Chup calls to his companions. "They're dying!"
He looks as nervous as he does desperate, wanting to makes sure the two men survive, but also not really sure if the people he's with are about to murder him, too.
Thorval Thorvalson |
After a bolt nearly hits Thorval through the guy he was holding. That man stops bleeding as Thorval sets him down. (sacred touch trait)
"I had him under control. I was doing Kurgess's sacred work! Don't EVER do that again!"
He looks at the bodies... "I wouldn't have left him dying like that. I'd just have beat him into submission. Good thing I am the blessed of the Strong Man." He then goes over and uses sacred touch on the other man, stabilizing him as well.
Agirran the Fury |
"They aren't the real doormen. They meant to waylay us on the other end." Agirran says to Chup. "Now let's see to our real patient. Assuming he's still alive."
Levin Hessel |
Levin stands similarly stunned as the two collapse in blood. "I... I was just... You didn't have to kill them!" Levin sheaths his sword.

"And we didn't."
Valore Edasseril |
Valore appears to to hardly be concerned with the welfare of the individuals. "if they are to live, let'd bring them inside until we can have the authorities deal with them as appropriate later."
Valore makes his way past the prisoners and the party bickering, appearing as if a fight had never broken out at all and enters the building.
Chup "Spoony" Spooner |
Falling back to sit on the ground, Chup wipes the sweat from his brow. He nods to Thorval in appreciation for his healing efforts.
The halfling levels the most judgmental gaze a little person can make at Agirran and Clak. "How do you know that? If you thought they were impostors, why wouldn't you say something? I don't know where you're from, but around here, we don't just go around shooting and chopping at people."
Standing back up, he composes himself and shakes his head. "No reason for it..." he mutters, clearly distraught about something much deeper than what just happened there in the yard. He struggles with his tiny arms to pull one of the unconscious men into the house.
Thorval Thorvalson |
Thorval grabs "blue" over his shoulder, and brings him into the house. "Agirran, grab the other. Mind you don't get his blood all over yourself."

*heavy sigh* "There wasn't time, and you may have noticed, they are not from around here either."
With that, he hauls his man in and puts him down out of the way.
Thorval Thorvalson |
"Chup, if you weren't paying attention, they were setting themselves up to backstab us. They were just setting us up, and not well. Even I saw through that one, and me pappy always said you could fool me with a blank page. Or something like that."
Levin Hessel |
Impressive, Levin thinks as he watches the ease with which the two brawlers (descriptively, not factually) haul the bodies in. "Well, he's right, they were planning an ambush. But... Still, they should've been given a chance to surrender or something." In the Sarenite temple the dervishes hadn't shied away from the prospect of killing an opponent, but they placed heavy emphasis on mercy where mercy was due.

Chup "Spoony" Spooner |
Sullen and distant, Chup only responds with, "I thought Pathfinders were the good guys." He takes one more look at the hideously wounded men heaped near the front door and shrugs. "Well, let's go see if Skelg is alright. Promise me you won't behead him if you get a hunch he's plotting against you."
Thorval Thorvalson |
"Levin, I tried. Honestly I did. Guess I won't be doing that again. From now, I will just call them out for single combat." He adjusts his tunic a little, making sure as much of his chest is bared as possible.
"That's the MANLY way of doing. The Kurgan way. It is about the challenge, not the victory!
"Anyone got a problem with that?"
He seems to be pondering something as he puts his man down. "Hey, Chup. You can use 'happy sticks', right? I'll make sure to hold the man down, if you wanna use my wand to bring him back... I figger we wanna question at least one of them. And, really, we should pull that bolt out of his neck. Doesn't look good there, at all."
(Assuming he still lives, of course)

GOTTA READ THE SPOILER!!! NO!!!! What was supposed to be there!?!?!??!
Edit now I see he fixed it
Thorval moves back over to Agirran the Fury and thumps him on the shoulder. "That's the thing about opinions, everyone's got one. Sometimes, though, you just gotta beat it out of him... that's what me pappy always said!
"wut?"
Chup "Spoony" Spooner |
"Happy sticks?" Chup says, raising an eyebrow. "Ahh, healing wands? Yeah, I can use them, no sweat. If you want me to carry yours for you and use it if you're wounded, I can do that."
He looks back at the two wounded men and shrugs. "I think we should leave these two be, though. They've suffered enough. I'm not going to wake one of them up so the lot of you can torture him and, most likely brutally maim him again." Crossing his arms, the halfling stands by his convictions.
"Let's just go check on Skelg. These two will be okay; I'll tell the venture-captain to send someone around to check on them after we're done here."
Thorval Thorvalson |

Thorval looks at Chup with a blank look. "Huh? I was just gonna ask questions. I'd protect him from those wanting to murder." He glares at the tengu and the other Ulfen.
"Uh, yeah. Please go ahead and carry my 'happy stick'. I'd appreciate it! Thank you."
Agirran the Fury |
"Aye, it's a special thing for an Ulfen warrior ta give his happy stick ta ya. I give at the temple of Calistria whenever I'm in port. Now can we be off already? Trigger, you cover us."

With the two warriors stabilized and inside the manor, the group continues searching Skelg. Ready in case more dangers wait you in the manor.
You open the door to the master bedroom and are greeted by a blast of heat. A roaring fire blazes in the fireplace even though the day is swelteringly hot. A huge bearded man shivers under his blankets, his bed pushed dangerously close to the fire. A thin servant sits in the far corner by a window, fanning himself with a handkerchief. The bearded man looks at you and blinks a few times, then speaks through chattering teeth. Are y-you P-path-f-finders?
Thorval Thorvalson |
"Aye, we be Pathfinders.
"We're lookin' fer a certain sparrin' partner of a certain Venture-Captain, yeah, Skelg. That you?"
He thinks a moment, "And why were those guards plannin' on murderatin' us? I gave them the what-for, and now they're ready to be shipped to the slammer.
"How can we help?"
Agirran the Fury |

"Hard to believe, isn't it." Agirran says wryly.

Not hard... coughs, armed groups... of disparate people... is expected of pathfinders. It´s very clear he needs almost all his remaining strengh to talk. Then Skelg makes a gesture to his manservant, who proceeds with the explaination of the situation.
I am Tyros, honored guests, lord Skelg's manservant. Allow me to explain the situation. A week ago, lord Skelg found some men in the basement vault, resumably to be thieves at that moment. At the time, one of them had lit a light and..
Skelg interrupts him, with much effort and chattering teeth. No....not a light.....a lantern. I had....no idea it..... had magical properties.
Pardon me my lord, and allow me. Continues Tyros. Then, the light from the lantern struk lord Skelg and he described the feeling as “having his inside freezing” When the lantern shone upon a tapestry hanging on the wall, a strange shimmering doorway appeared. Sort of a door with the colors of the northern light. They take vantage of my lord weakened state and fled the vault with the lantern and valuables."
Skelg speaks up again. [b]Tell them… about Tirfyr…
Tyros: Yes milord. After the raid, one of lord Skelg's confidents, Tirfyr, stepped through the portal. Moments after, he stepped back in saying there was a ship encased in ice on the other side. He tried to explore more, but after half an hour the portal vanished, trapping Tirfyr on the other side.
Skelg interrupts again [b]I'm sure the....cure is in the ship.
Tyros: My lord, please don't overdo it. Anyway, two days later, those thieves returned with Bengeirr, one of my lord enemies. They slew lord Skelg's guards and posed themselves as such.
Skelg continues despite his servant opinion, clearly angered of what happened: He spat on me, ....saying “now you die in bed like an old woman”. There´s Ulfen between you… so you understand how… dishonourable is this death… a sent letter to Aldir… for help. And you´re here

"By The Strong Man, keep fighting, sir! I pledge that I shall return your vitality to you, and make the blaggards pay for what you have done.
"Hells, I'll bring 'em back through the portal, and you can make 'em pay, as is your right."
Oykiv |
When Valero starts casting Tyros says: Do you think some magic will help him? Lord Skelg hadn´t sent a letter to Aldir if an easy magic trik will help him.
Despite Tyros unbelieving, Valero find there´s an overwhelming conjuration aura inside Skelg. You have never found an aura more potent than this.
Both Tyros and Skelg nods in agreement when the rest of the group offers their help. At least until Chup talks, then they turn their sigh to the tapestry. Oh yes, the tapestry, says Tyros, it was a meadow scene with shepherd and flock before the lantern shown on it. Lord Skelg asked a servants to bring it here to see if there´s anyway to open the portal again. Without success until now
Thorval. The blaggards don´t cross the portal. They open it unwantedly and, scared runned away down the street. Then, two days later, they´d came through the same entrance than you, killed Skelg guards and let him to die in bed. Just in case clarification is needed
Valore Edasseril |
Turning to Tyros: "I have not that kind of magic sir. It is but a detection spell. But your master is under quite the magical effect."
Valore turns to Skelg: "Who is Bengeirr and where can we find him?"
Oykiv |
Tyros interrup Skelg answer. Please, don´t bother lord Skelg. He needs all his strengh to fight against his illness.
Bengeirr is one of Haldyr’s son. He must be angered because lorg Skelg raided is father funeral ship. We have no idea he was in Absalom until he come to the manor.
I can give you a description of him, if it helps
To locate Bengeirr you can look for information on recent Ulfen visitors to Absalom with a Diplomacy (gather information) check, narrating a little where and what you ask. Or you can suggest your own way to locate him.
