Old Guy GM |
Pardon me for asking because I didn't see you mention it, but did my sneak attack in the last round do anything - even if it was to disable a mirror image? Or the AoO for that matter?
NEVER QUESTION ME!!!! No, just kidding. You did have one near miss that popped a mirror image, but I forgot to post that. Otherwise, I'm all caught up. I switched Lym and Tomaru on the map. And indeed, she is very tough. Her turn...
Lucrecia snarls as her last image goes down and the arrow hits her. She shifts to get out of the line of fire, and turns towards Kellen.
Her daggers are a blur of flashing steel as she slashes away, blood splashing the walls as the lamia matriarch scores several deep wounds on the rogue. 57 hp dmg, Kellen.
On one strike, she pauses with the blade in Kellen's side, looking deep into his eyes. He can feel shreds of his sanity beginning to twist, to separate, but with a shake of his head, he fights off the drain to his will.
Group B: Thordak, Tomaru, Rhianni; then NEW ROUND. NOTE: Praxim, Lym, and Rhianni no longer have LOS to her. You're going to have to go in there...
Praxim |
Additional note: does Thordak have the ability to strike inside of 10'? She is 5' away from you, fyi.
He can target the square that's ten feet away, so he's fine.
Praxim steps diagonally into the square right of Thordak, and unleashes more arrows.

Ouch! Also - just realized that the short sword attack should have been a critical, if it would matter. My bad for missing it.
Lym Blackhand |
I have only one hp left, I'm not going in there. :p
Lym remains out of the lamia matriarch's sight, but points a finger over the heads of the others, into the boudoir -- and finishes her spell.
Inside the room, the air darkens, then brightens, and a long, drawn-out sound echoes off the walls; a sound not unlike the twanging of a harpstring. When the light fades, eight-legged bodies erupt out of thin air and hurl themselves forward into battle. Two of the golden-furred giant spiders spit webbing at Lucretia, while the other two leap upon her, mandibles gnashing for unprotected flesh!
Still trembling with pain, Lym fumbles for a curative potion and gulps down the contents.
Lym finishes casting Summon Monster IV and brings forth 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 celestial spiders.
Two of the spiders (appearing at D13 and D14) spit webbing at Lucretia in an attempt to entangle her. Ranged attack #1 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7, ranged attack #2 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
The other two appear on the table close to Lucretia and attack. Attack #1 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19 for 1d6 ⇒ 6 damage plus poison: Fortitude save DC 14 or 1d2 ⇒ 2 Str. damage. Attack #2 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13 for 1d6 ⇒ 2 damage plus poison: Fortitude save DC 14 or 1d2 ⇒ 1 Str. damage.
Lym drinks a potion of Cure Moderate Wounds for 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (6, 5) + 3 = 14 hp back.
Tomaru |
Tomaru sees that Lym is staying as safe as she can. He realizes that the snake-woman-thing is using or at least has spells so decides to wait to see if she casts another to counter it.

Just need Rhi, but...
Thordak shifts and swings his axe. Lucrecia's defenses continue to hold, as only one of his attacks connect. Praxim's shots also connect only once, the last one to be precise. It is quickly becoming apparent that defeating the lamia matriarch is no small task...
Lym's spiders cause her to start in surprise, but she effectively avoids the fangs and the webs.
Rhi to finish the round, then Kellen in the NEW ROUND (3), then Lucrecia.
Kellen Wrensler |
"Nice try there, but let's see if we can't make it more interesting..." Kellen spits out as he takes the blows. He produces a scroll; reads it; and once again disappears from sight.
Scroll of Greater Invisibility in effect; it lasts 5 or 8 rounds (I assume it would be at Lym's level). Take 5' step back to change my position in case of attack.
Thordak Ironheart |
Rhianni touches Thordak giving him a bit more prtection from the serpent woman.
Cast Protection from evil on Thordak.
Crap! Sorry, but I have to save. It's my stupid superstition rage power. Which comes in handy when the bad guys cast spells! But not so much when the good guys do. Here's hoping I can fail like normal.
Will: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29
Crap! *Slams head on desk* Sorry, Rhianni. I don't suppose there's any chance you wouldn't happen to be like THE super uber baddest 8th level sorcerer like... EVER would you? :p
Rhianni Verdani |
Rhianni watches on as her magic fails to effect Thordak in any way, almost as if it had bounced straight back from his head. "Woah Thordak, remind me not to do that again!!"
No worries .... these things happen ... dwarfs huh!!
Old Guy GM |
"Yess, my love, letsss do that.' Lucrecia purrs. Her long tail lashes out and strikes Kellen as he tries to read his scroll. 8 hp dmg Kellen. The tail wraps itself around him several times, constricting him from waist to neck.
She smiles evilly as she tightens her grip on the rogue. The whole room echos with sound of ribs cracking as he screams in pain. 12 hp more, K Then she smiles, speaks a word, and BAMPH! both she and the unconscious rogue are gone!
Out of combat - what do you do?
Lym Blackhand |
Lym chants a quick Word of Power and looks all around, scanning for magical auras.

STAY AWAY FROM KELLEN'S SPOILERS! For now. Please and thank you, you'll appreciate it in the end.
Lym Blackhand |
"She cast a spell known as Dimension Door," Lym says in an urgent tone. "Even at novice levels, it can carry someone 440 feet! Or anywhere between that maximum distance and zero. I do not know how powerful Lucretia is!"
Kellen Wrensler |
Ruminating on his thoughts, Kellen looks at his situation. Damn, but that hurts...let's see if I can manage anything. He looks around for anything that might help him get free; otherwise he'll try and see if he can work his way out.

Thordak Ironheart |
The dwarf looks to Rhianni with wide eyes and fury, "OKAY!" he yells, surprisingly no anger found within his response; it's as if he is simply making a statement.
As the snake woman disappears, "BLAST! BLAST BLAST BLAST BLAST BLAST BLAST!!!" the dwarf yells again, this time with obvious anger in his voice as he drives his axe into the table each time, working out his anger issues. Once he finally manages to calm, he fights through the weariness, "Okay, well now what do we blasted do! I HATE that snake lady. HATE HER!" He drives his axe into the busted up table once again.
2/23 rounds of rage used; 4 rounds of fatigue
Tomaru |

What about this?
And even better, Tomaru has a Dimension Door spell available, so Spellcraft: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
Ok, then go with the Dispel Magic.
Rhianni Verdani |
Rhianni looks around distraught at the disappearance of Kellen.
Rhianni has augury, which she can use to se if we choose a good or bad way of approaching this...otherwise she doen't have much to help find Kellen...
Old Guy GM |
After Thordak's last blast on the table, the room falls silent. There are no magical nor evil auras that can be perceived from this room. There appears to be nothing of great value in the room, however, the dwarf's tender ministrations on the table have caused several items to crash to the ground at Rhianni's feet. A broken inkwell, a pen, and a scroll bearing many words backed by the Sihedron Rune.
A closer look at the room itself reveals that it once was a jailer's room perhaps. There are two doors leading out of the room. One north, and one west of you.
Old Guy GM |
Kellen Wrensler |
Kellen makes his way to his gear and rummages for the Cure Serious Wounds potion and quaffs it. He then carefully listens at the door - maybe take a peek if there's a visible keyhole or such - to get an idea of what is going on.

Praxim makes his way to the north door, scans beyond it for evil, and (after Lym or Tomaru has checked it for magic), opens it a crack, peers through, then opens it all the way if it seems safe.
Tomaru |

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Looking around, not knowing what to do like... AT ALL, Thordak takes a deep breath... and then proceeds to speak loudly as he finds himself still on edge. "Okay, no one panic! This is no time for panic! We've got a missing lad and we need to find him! And why is everyone shouting! I can hear just fine without all the shouting!" He rolls his eyes in frustration before stopping a moment and taking several more deep breaths before continuing. "Okay, now that that's settled and everyone's calm, I'm gonna see what's behind door number two while the elf checks that door." He moves to the door, checking it for traps before opening it.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25 Checking door in F 11 for bombs. :)
Old Guy GM |
"Dat's sum fun in dere fer da lads. We kin play wid dat! Jes let 'im out!" the deep voice growls. As it speaks, you can see a heavy shadow shifting, while the door creaks ominously as something leans against it.
A soft voice interrupts him. "Now Jargaath, do not presume you can use my playthings. May I remind you that you are not in charge here? Neither of us is. This one may have information we need, and by 'we' I mean Barl. Do you feel like explaining to him why this agent from Magnimar went suddenly dead?"
There is a hard grunt.
"I thought not. Now, there are more of them, and they will be coming up through the dungeon. Send some of your 'lads' to deal with them. We need to talk about..." The voice fades as it gets farther from the door, and you hear no more.
Old Guy GM |
Praxim senses no evil as the opened door reveals a narrow stairway heading upwards. The stairs ends in a heavy wooden door.
For Praxim and Lym, you notice that the heavy construction of the fort prevents most detection efforts. The walls and floors/ceilings are typically 1' to 2' thick stone.
Thordak's door opens into a small jail room with cells running along each wall, four per side. These grimy, blood-spattered cells are empty save some fetid straw mats and vermin-ridden blankets. There are no other exits.
As Lym and Rhianni chat, Lym notices a leather scroll case on the floor where it fell after Thordak smashed the table.
Kellen Wrensler |
Kellen shakes his head and his countenance is serious. Plaything, uh? Not for you and not for a bunch of ogres, lady. Got to warn the others...this could get ugly for all of us.
Several things come to mind:
-Is it possible to disable the door lock from this side? If so, let's try Disable Device. 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (12) + 18 = 30
-If not, he will scan the room for any hidden exits or an extra key to open the door, perhaps. Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
-Lastly - how strong does the door look to be; breakable? Knowledge(Engineering): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Thordak Ironheart |
"Bah, nothin' in here," he tells the others. He then sheathes his longaxe and takes up the ogre hook. "Oh yeah, I'm bringin' the pain, snake lady, don't you worry," he vows, not realizing how crazy he sounds. As he cuts his eyes toward one of the others, he notices he's being stared at strangely. "What? I wasn't sayin' anythin'. I don't know what's happening - what are we doing again?" He scratches the back of his head as he looks to the north door. "Ah! Since my door is no good, we move through the elf's door. Let's go!" Thordak heads that way. Straight up the stairs and to the door, opening it if he finds no trap upon it.
Will take 10 for 23 on Perception to search again.
Kellen Wrensler |
Out of curiosity, did the scroll of greater invisibility get lost? Your description made it sound like I didn't get to use it, and wondered if it got left behind or is it with my gear. Just wanted to know so I can work on a plan. Thanks!
Old Guy GM |
Before our dwarf goes completely off his rocker...
Lym bends down and retrieves the scroll case. It is made from a very fine leather, but worn. Inside there is a parchment scroll written with a very fine hand. It seems to be a list. The header says 'Those who would give their greed for the Master's need.' It is a list of names, male and female. You recognize three of them: Lanna the barmaid, Markus, who Shalelu caught, and the last one most recently: Kaven Windstrike. Kaven's name is circled.
---------------
Thordak does not find anything untoward with the door.
Thordak Ironheart |
Lol!
Taking a deep breath he pauses a moment, looking back at the others and nodding he's ready. As soon as everyone else is prepared, he busts through the door wielding his ogre hook, yelling as he runs in and hoping to see the large lady.
Old Guy GM |
The room at the top of the stairs is, or was, a storeroom. The boxes, barrels , and crates in this space have crushed and scattered about.
Thordak, of course, takes no note of this as he opens the door. It opens to a long stone hallway with doors along either side. Most importantly though, are the two ogres trundling down the hall towards him. They don't seem surprised to see you emerging from the stairs.
This ought to be epic, so...

Rhianni Verdani |
"Oh! more of these revolting creatures. Remember you have defeated such before. Let them fall before us again." says Rhianni as she comes up the stairs and seeing the advancing ogres. Her eyes widen as she points at the floor in front of the group, as it is covered in a slimey slippery oily substance.

As the grease takes affect, Thordak pauses where he's at, awaiting to see what the ogres plan to do. "C'mon ya ugly brutes! Let's see how well ya dance when I cut your legs from ya! C'mon!"
Delay.
Old Guy GM |
The first ogre comes barreling in at top speed, ogre hook high. Praxim's arrow takes him in the shoulder, throwing his balance off. It hits the grease and skids, arms flailing, and slides into the wall at top speed.
AoO for Thordak, although I assume you were holding to take an attack? Either way, swing, then each of you make a Ref save to avoid flailing ogre.
The ogre's impact slams the door closed, and there is an audible clang as his hook goes flying back down the hall.
The second ogre, watching the fate of his brother, treads more lightly - for an ogre - an rushes up to attack. He has more success at keeping his footing, and swings at the dwarf. The hook goes high, but it carves a line of sparks across the wall over Thordak's head.
The grease is hard to see, but it's marked in red, just in front of Praxim and Thordak.
I moved Lym up, I believe she is at Pax East? Tomaru, it's your turn.
