Aurichalcum |

At some point as the party reconvenes to share what they have discovered
"Regardless of all else, I can only see this as being at least in part a sign that joining your company and heading to Kelmarane is my true course; wagons, have wheels, and a burning wagon has flaming wheels, the flaming wheel is manifestation of Saerenraes emissary Bryla whom I see in my dreams and who reveals unto me her teaching. Fire is the breath of the Dragon, a secret I believe I am on the verge of discovering."
"Look at the other coincidences, Saerenrae is a beautiful woman, and here we have the Lady as the one in command representing Saerenrae, whom we were drawn towards by a beacon of fire. The burning wheels I have remarked upon being Bryla, and..." Aurichalcum turns to look directly at Talahel "A sword with a curious history, a symbol of the emissary Mystmorning, an intelligent sword... we miss only the canine symbology of Charlabu otherwise we have signs of her complete Heavenly host."
"So much significance....so many signs"
"Able, quickly, record it all!"

Ablenaffener, your smelly friend tells you "Gnolls hate pugwampi, detest them with a vengeance. But they persist in hanging around, think that gnolls are divine and want to worship them, I reckon. The gnolls view them as vermin, though."
He stomps off...
And, as Talahel and Tahlumilali poke around the remains of the burned out wagon, you both feel yourselves under observation. It's that scruffy fellow who was shouting about 'pugwampis' earlier, lurking behind another wagon and peering round to see what you two are up to.

Tahlumilali Auvreaanea |

He whispers back while working his way towards the right side of the wagon.

Talahel Zstelian |

Talahel continues his search toward the left, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible.
When Talahel and Tahlumilali have worked their way onto to either side of the scruffy man watching them. They confront him.
Tahlumilali, assume I am in position. You may confront the man and I will join in afterward.

Tahlumilali Auvreaanea |

Hello there not a good night to be out alone. Tahl says with a predatory grin on his face that in no way reached his eyes. Arms folded over his weapons the picture of barely contained violence.
INTIMIDATE1d20 - 2 ⇒ (14) - 2 = 12

Talahel Zstelian |

Talahel puts his hand on the hilt of his long sword and address the greasy man.
"We can very well ask you the same question! First, you yell out Pugwampis, then you stare very intently at Lady Almah the whole time she is speaking, now you are suspiciously watching us conduct our investigation. If you have information to share, I suggest you start right now! Who are you, why are you here, and what's your interest in this mysterious fire?"
If the man is uncooperative, Talahel will repeat his query and try to intimidate the man into answering his question. Intimidate 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (2) + 0 = 2 EDIT: Yikes! I'm glad I put this under a spoiler, hopefully the man cooperates without intimidation.

"Able" Ablenaffener |

Able turns to Azten, keen to discuss the bizarre exchange. "An interesting man, our sage there - and interesting creatures, these pugwampi. I'm intrigued by the short shrift our friend seems to hold amongst his traveling companions - no one else payed his seemingly reasonable suggestion of a common desert animal any mind at all. Layers of machinations that we are unaware of, hmm?"

Tahlumilali Auvreaanea |

And you had better answer truthfully human.
Tahl growls already dangerously close to losing his patience with the smelly unwashed man.

![]() |
Tahlumilali and Talahel cluster round the grubby bloke doing their best to be intimidating.
He seems pretty indignant, but evasive as well.
"Nowt to do with me. Mischief around here, well, pugwampis are the obvious cause, innit. As fer Almah... she's beautiful. Well worth the looking at."
He's a bit startled by Tahlumilali's growling.
"No! I had nothing to do with the fire! How do we even know the fire was set? That idiot burned a hundred candles in his wagon. Perhaps he just got unlucky. We're in gnoll country. It was probably pugwampis, I tell you."
He acts pretty certain, as if he knows of what he speaks when it comes to gnolls.

"Able" Ablenaffener |

"Given that pugwampis are usually around gnolls, and there is a lack of gnolls at the moment, I think it's safe to say people think he's a few shields short of an armory. No offense meant, sir." Azten says to the man.
"Which raises the further question of why are there no gnolls in an area that is known for the large numbers of gnolls. Clearly further investigations will be required to make the whole picture seen," Able prattles. His tome has appeared in his hands again, and he makes a few chicken-scratchy notes on an unused page.

![]() |
The grubby fellow glares indignantly.
"I know all about gnolls. That's why I'm here. Almah hired me about a month ago to tell her all about the gnolls living in these hills. Gnolls killed my mother and grandfather when I was a boy. They put fire to our village and slew hundreds. Somehow I escaped with my father to the town of Solku, not far from here. It was a long time ago, I've forgotten most of what I saw. Terrible things. But I find it's the sounds that stay with me. The shrill howls and barks—hundreds of them at once - that sounded deliriously close to an audience. Laughing at us.
"Father raised me to know everything about the gnolls, their customs, their language. So as better to track them down and wipe them out. All of them. Together we scouted out their lairs, studied their tribes, listened to them speak until we could understand what they were saying. They're not dumb animals, you know. Not like you might think. In some ways they're even smarter than us.
"Dad didn't survive our first raid on a gnoll camp of the Three Jaws tribe. I saw them fall on him like hyenas on an abandoned kill, slathering themselves in his blood and innards. I can still hear the tear of his scalp and the sound of his bones against frenzied teeth. Against this scene I was forgotten. Ignored.
"I escaped, and I carry on the work of my father."

Talahel Zstelian |

Talahel's hand moves away from the hilt of his sword as hears the man's story.
"I have encountered my share of gnolls in the darker places of Katapesh. I agree they are not to be taken lightly and I have killed my share of them in the past in pursuit of some noble's child taken hostage to be sold into slavery. It is quite clear, the gnolls have treated you far worse. Lady Almah is very wise to hire you. My name is Talahel Zstelian, what is your name, friend?"

Tahlumilali Auvreaanea |

Tahl turns to Talahel and whispers in elvish.
If he really knows so much about these pugwampis creatures should he be shown the tracks?

Talahel Zstelian |

Talahel acknowledges Tahl's question with a slight nod as he talks to Dashki.
"Well Dashki, we can certainly use your gnoll expertise right now. We found some tracks outside of the wagon that burned. Can you take a look at them and see if your pugwampis made them?"
If Dashki agrees, Talahel leads the man to the tracks that Tahl had discovered.

Aurichalcum |

So we have the pervy Gnoll expert who is a bit suspect, a set of tracks that suggest a 3rd party was involved, and Almas view that she doesn't think it was arson.
It's a huge lie he's spinning if what he is saying is untrue, and I'd be inclined to give him some benefit of the doubt given the trail of footprints, and that he was hired before all this due to his expertise in the matter...
If he says the footfrints are Pugwampis then I reckon present the whole thing to Alma - and then Dashki can tell us all he knows about Pugwampis (I wanna know what they eat for breakfast!) - and I'm not keen that there might be Gnolls about and we just had a huge beacon of fire... call me paranoid
When I hear his story I watch him closely to see if he might be fibbing
Sense Motive - 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
"It's bad luck to lie to a Dragon, human..."

Aurichalcum |

"Dashki, it would be best to tell us everything, as trying to withhold information is a sign of guilt. I wish only to get to the bottom of the matter, not to persecute and lay blame... tell us the whole story and we can help you. It's the best offer you are going to get".
Diplomacy 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Tahlumilali Auvreaanea |

You wouldn't be trying to lie to us would you?
Tahl asks offhandedly while shifting his weight to find more secure footing in case Dashki decides to run.

Aurichalcum |

As long as we are happy we got all the info - well done on the track spotting guys! So long as this guy doesn't turn out to be some kind of double agent nutcase it looks pretty straightforward. Would hate to find out the reason he's a Gnoll Expert is because he lives with them and lures caravans into ambushes... or am I just paranoid? :p

Aurichalcum |

What do we reckon then? we know he's not telling us something...
I'm fine with heading out immediately while the tracks are fresh, it's night time in the desert but we all have low light vision - so thats not a problem.
We still need to know what he's hiding though, and work out what to tell Alma

Talahel Zstelian |

I think we take Dashki with us and start following the tracks. We may get more out of him on the trip and if we find the pugwampi it may provide more information. We can tell Lady Almah what we find when we get back.
Talahel turns to Dashki and says, "I agree. Lead the way, we will follow. Let's find these pugwampi and figure out what is going on."

Tahlumilali Auvreaanea |

I was thinking Auri should go all telepathy and stuff and let everyone know Dhaski is withholding info....though Tahl might kill him if it seems he is a danger.

Talahel Zstelian |

I assume that Auri can selectively choose who he communicates with telepathically. Assuming Dashki can't hear it, then yes, I would like Auri to share what he suspects. I have not opened any of the spoilers between Megan and Auri so I don't know what he knows except what he hinted at in his ooc comment above.

Aurichalcum |

Sent telepathically
"This man, Dashki, is holding information back from us - I can't be sure of what, but his eyes and his manner tells me he has been less than completely open...I don't believe he has lied, just that hasn't told us everything"
"Perhaps he is embarrased by his lusts for Alma, perhaps he is a traitor. He seems very determined to withhold his secrets"

Talahel Zstelian |

Talahel glances at Auri, gives the pseudodragon a slight nod and puts his hand on the hilt of his longsword.
"Dashki, remember, trust is not given freely, it must be earned. I hope for your sake that you are what you say you are and that you are not withholding anything that will put us or this caravan in more danger. The consequences could be dire."

Tahlumilali Auvreaanea |

Tahl's eyes widen slightly when he receives Auri's message. He just manages to keep his hands from drawing his blades.
Do you think he is likely to betray us?
He thinks back to Auri.

Lofnaiali Auvrea-anea |

Diplomacy:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
"Look we are here to help just like you. My husband here lost his parents to gnoll we understand what has happened to you. So if there is anything anything at all that you are holding back for any reason could you please tell us."
Lofnaiali says to Dashki in response to Auri's telepathic message.

Apologies for neglecting you, alas a glut of job interviews has not resulted in employment :( And a question for you all: What do you want to do over Christmas? Shall we carry on or would folks like a defined break to allow you to attend your festivities and family gatherings without having to worry about a game?
Right, Dashki wants to go pugwampi-hunting RIGHT NOW! Are you going along with this, or do you want to talk with the Lady Almar, or what?
Oh, and the female goat herder comes rushing up.
"Have any of you seen Rombard? He ran off in all the excitement and I cannot find him anywhere..."

Aurichalcum |

Happy either way, I have a semi-relaxed holiday season. Sorry to hear about the interviews too - my contracts all expired a couple of weeks ago, but at least I have new ones from mid Jan til March to tide me over!
---
"What is a Rombard?"
"Anyhow, I believe we must at least tell Alma that we will be off across the desert in search of further evidence to prove whether Pugwampi's are the culprit, if you want to start now, I can explain it to her then catch you up quickly!"

Talahel Zstelian |

I have no problem continuing over the holidays, but if it presents a conflict for others, I am ok with a brief hiatus. If we do that, we should define the restart clearly so that we all are back at the same time.
Talahel tells Auri "Good plan Auri, you tell Lady Almah what is going on and we will leave now to track the Pugwampi's, then you can catch up to us. I agree with Dashki that time is of the essence if we want to catch these culprits."

Tahlumilali Auvreaanea |

I'm all for continuing through the holiday season.
Tahl stays silent as the party decides on their actions his gaze stuck on Dhaski, watching his every move.

The Lady Almah is taking her ease in her big tent, sipping wine and nibbling nuts. She looks up as Aurichalcum flies in, and gestures to a cushion.
"Perch there, if you please. Would you care for any refreshments? And do you have any news for me?"

"Able" Ablenaffener |

"I am familiar with Rombard - we have spoken, briefly, though I haven't seen him since the fire." Able says. "I shall keep my eyes and ears open, and find him if he is to be found." Given his new task of goat-hunting, Able turns towards the rest of the party. "Away, friends and companions, and let us hunt the pugwampi, as heroes of yore!"
