Since Iommi identified it, wouldn't he know the crossbow is incapable of dealing damage to this thing?

Yes. Of course, an adrenaline-fueled round or two of futile shots might still be something the PC might do....if he crits n does max damage, he could do up to 6 damage after DR....

Probably, but I also only have 1 flask of Alchemist's Fire (which will hurt you guys) and we still have to fight the Necromancer. My vials of Holy Water are useless, here, too. Since I know my Crossbow could do damage in theory -- and because I'll soon likely never need it again -- why not get my money's worth out of my last few Bolts?
All while illustrating to my allies I need to rest to boost my PC's combat ability.
Rd 3 a bit prematurely, but...
Iommi-Tyr Magnusson loads his beat-up, scavenged crossbow one more time and, not believing in the futility, fires again into Melee!

I can prepare Alchemist bombs and extracts; all I have are the two extracts from first level (not that I'm any "He-Man" with a few bombs, of course). It's really not much of a big deal; I'm still okay vs undead with the Holy Water and I do still have one Alchemist's Fire left from my starting gold.
Male Human Monk 5 (Qinggong Master of Many Styles from the Sacred Mountain)/Fighter (Brawler) 3
Bombs you should be able to use right now. Alchemists don't "prepare" Bombs, an Alchemy Kit contains the components for creating them, the Alchemist imbues it with a bit of magical energy, and hey presto, you've got a Bomb. I guess technically MJ could say you don't have any of the Catalyst vials needed, but it says they're refilled the same way a spell component pouch is (i.e. via Handwavium), and they last for YEARS before going inert.
Worst case we can take a couple of minutes after this fight for you to get out your kit and pour some chemicals into a vial. And even then there's no time listed that is needed to prepare them.

I think I'm close to a breakthrough!

As Hisao is about to reach in for the pouch, his ninja training kicks in, and he gently touches the hollow slot running the width of the top of the front of the niche.... The slot from which, no doubt, a razor-sharp guillotine falls to sever an over eager hand....

This way looks clear. I'm gonna find out about these seams. Say, I wonder if they are connected to that lever. Hisao, pull that lever, me boyo. It might lead us out of this bloody mess.
Will Hisao resist the urge to pull the shiny, candy-like lever!?

Nope
Hisao yanks the lever.

M Human unchained monk 8/paladin 6
As Hisao yanks the lever, a gasp of escaping air can be heard from the floor as the circular 10-ft diameter center of the floor pops up and swivels on a hidden axis to reveal a circular hole or pit 10-ft in diameter....
Simultaneously, the circular seam in the ceiling becomes a round trap door that drops several inches and swivels aside to reveal a circular shaft in the ceiling overhead, corresponding to the hole in the floor....
A rattle of chains and the clicking of cogs and gears echoes through the underwater cistern....
A great, verdigris-stained copper diving bell emerges from the hole in the floor of the inner domed chamber, raised up and out of the floor on telescoping rods! The outside of the bell is decorated with relief images of hippocampus-drawn seashell chariots in which tritons and mermaids ride....
The diving bell ascends toward the shaft at the apex of the domed chamber, and stops when the top of the 10-ft-diameter-by-10-ft-high copper bell passes through the opening at the ceiling. The bottom rim of the bell now hangs 10 feet over the floor, and four rope ladders unroll and hang from the interior of the bell to the floor of the domed chamber....
M Human unchained monk 8/paladin 6
Another muffled rattling of chains underwater echoes from outside the domed chamber, and a loud CLANK! reverberates from the top of the diving bell....
Male Human Ninja 10| HP 92/92 | AC 32 (T 20 FF 23) | CMD 25| CMB 7| Saves F 5 R 15 W 5 | Init +14 | Per +13 | Ki 8/8 r 2/2
Huh, can we use the rope ladders to climb onto the bell and then climb the bell to get through the hole in the ceiling?
M Human unchained monk 8/paladin 6
As Hisao inspects the interior of the diving bell, he sees yet another lever inside the diving bell near its inner apex....
M Human unchained monk 8/paladin 6
The lever inside the diving bell can easily be reached by climbing any of the four rope ladders that hang from inside the top of the bell....
