How do we determine starting distance? It should be a set amount, otherwise I want to start as far away as possible. Maybe just 20' away?
The Elf eyes his opponent from a distance. This meat head is going to look like a pin cushion once I'm done with him. He bows, showing a moment of respect before the fight begins. "The tattoos will be a wonderful target for my arrows."
We should also start with weapons not in hand, sort of like a Wild West duel.

Yeah, for future fights we can make some maps. That will add a lot more tactics to the matches.
The Elf gets the jump on his much slower opponent. He swings the longbow off his shoulder, notches an arrow, and fires it quickly at the bald man. "Catch this."

Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
The arrow slides deep between Maxwell's ribs until only the feathered end protrudes from his chest. A stream of blood bubbles from his chest and runs off the arrowhead sticking several inches out his back, making a puddle of red mud in the sand at his feet.

Is 0HP still up but only able to take single actions for one round, or unconscious? Also, we should make sure and "Preview" our attacks as they are made so we can describe in detail how our opponents are affected/where they are hit by attacks. For example, you just struck a one-punch killing blow.
Maxwell's fist lands with a sickening crunch as Apollyon's nose and sinus cave in. He staggers and spits blood and teeth, the world darknening around him.

Lucky as all hell, let's do starting hp as 1 full HD and 2 (half HD+1) + 3*con mod. So Maxwell will be HD 8 + 5 + 5 + CON (1 *3) + toughness feat +3 = 24. This will give us more time to let rolls balance out.

Yeah dude, greatswords are the s+*@, especially with a high str mod! That's made Praetor a lot of fun to play, a hit at low levels is basically an auto-kill...and just wait until I can heal at 2nd level.
The blood disappears from Allister's blade and he sinks it back into his sheath. This time the paladin says nothing, he merely extends his hand and beckons the monk.

This play style would really benefit from having multiple players on each team, 2v2, 3v3, etc. We could open up the game to people in our shared campaigns for some side action eventually, might be fun.
Also, I was thinking Human is almost certainly the best race for PvP. The extra feat at level 1 is so huge, maybe better than any other class feature for combat.

Lyonel notches an arrow in his bow and fires it at the ifrit, hoping to extinguish her flame quickly.
