About Maxwell Rateliff

Background:

Rateliff worked as an emissary for an eclectic noble that collects rare artifacts. His job was to retrieve select items upon the noble's request at any cost, be it brute force or deception. After proving his proficiency in complicated and delicate extractions, his missions started involving long treasure hunts into ruins revered by ancient cults and cultures. These highly contriversal states eventually got the best of the nobleman who was murdered one night by an assassin. With his career abruptly at an end, Rateliff lived for awhile as a muscle for hire before joining the Pathfinders to once again live a life of exploration and spelunking.

Rateliff worked under a strict personal code of efficiency and respect for the other mercenaries that have carried on to define his outlook on life. He calls them his Tenants. It is surprising common that an acquaintance from the past may be on the other side of a job in the future.

Tenants:

1: No Negotiations. I am a force of action. If I'm called, deliberations have ended.
2: No Torture. Honor the souls that are departing.
3: No Diversions. Missions are swift and precise. No women, substances, or personal agendas while on the job.
4: No Evidence. Don't get caught and don't leave a trail.
5: Never Children. A child with a weapon is a threat, but not an enemy.

Appearance:

Rateliff is tall at 6'4" and at the pinnacle of physical perfection with large toned muscles that are surprisingly flexible for their considerable bulk. With his wide shoulders, his frame resembles that of a stout man, yet Rateliff would be more than twice the size. He has a closely shaved head of thick black hair, long sideburns that spike along his cheeks, and has tan skin from an active lifestyle. His arms, legs, back, and chest are covered in tattoos that depict his study in anatomy. They are a mix of skeletal features, cryptic symbols, and tribal weaving. Not being the brightest man in Golarion, he was at least clever enough to camouflage his research as pieces of his tribal upbringing, using his own body for reference. He wears a loose fitting outfit of martial artists, shirtless in hot weather. Two kamas are tucked behind him at his waist and Shuriken are hidden among his clothing.

Personality:

Rateliff works alone as much as he works with others. His tattoos and direct manner of speaking is disengaging for most people, as a result Rateliff tends to keep to himself if not in the company of other mercenaries. During a mission he is more reserved than when on his own time, due to his Tenants. He is a natural skeptic and has a strong handle on his surroundings and senses while the political and superfluous world of subterfuge and complicated ideas is beyond him. In general he is calm and decisive, even in battle and the hardest of times. His meditation in martial arts has centered himself and he has accepted his mortal nature.
