Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

Sorry gang, it was a soccer tournament weekend for us so life was crazy.

"Yes, I'm certain they took her. Carli Isabelle is her name." The old woman wipes away tears, impressed that someone is listening to her. "She's innocent of any accusations they could make - she even served in the youth conscripts for a time! They took the wrong girl, and they killed her dad and brother in the process!"

As Kayleigh and Nebbin approach the wagon, one of the priests gets down from the driver's box and comes over. He asks the very question on Kayleigh's tongue - should the brothers take the corpses in the apartment to Potter's Yard for general burial or do you wish them taken to the citadel morgue?

He tells her that in the absence of the guard on these streets, the brothers have grown accustomed to taking the bodies when and where they find them and simply recording whatever is known about them. Where were they found? What do they look like? How did they die? Where are they buried?

In this case, some of the locals said the guard had been involved in the incident, so the brothers were waiting here for a bit before picking up the bodies.

No problem. Basketball tournament here.

Emi puts her hand to her head and massages her temples. She feeling tireder than you ought to, and maybe has a headache coming on. A drink would be great right about now.

"What is her age?" she asks the woman. "Youth conscripts? Do you know if she ever visited Castle Korvosa?"

She and Trinia are practically neighbors. Is she supposed to be involved with her? Or is this investigator just snatching up women for some reason?"

"Also, do you know if Carli has a friend named Trinia?"

Kayleigh considers the priest's words. "I suppose taking them to Potter's Yard is best," she says uncertainly. "Since they are murder victims, we were thinking that perhaps a spell could be used pre-burial to see what they saw before they were slain. Do you think Bishop d'Bear might be willing to cast that spell to aid our investigation into these killings?"

Nebbin nods as well.

"We have the people we think killed them, so if they can tell us for sure, that would be good," he says.

"But, yeah, we have to find Trinia. You haven't ... picked her up, have you?" he asks nervously.

Regeris remains quiet as the rest of the party does the talking, a troubled expression on his face. "Everything we're doing is about finding Trinia. But right now we don't have much to go on. We can start looking into the artist's overground as well."

To Kayleigh and Tassira, the brother nods and replies, "I'll carry that request to her on behalf of the guard." He takes your names so he knows who to follow up with and calls his brother down from the driver's box to help him.

"I don't think we've picked up a Trinia, but there are two bodies in the wain that don't have names yet. Street folk, by the looks of them. Since you're with the guard you can take a look if you want. We'll head back down to the square to pick up the dead there when we're done here." He shakes his head sadly, "So much killing..."

The two brothers make their farewells and head into the apartment to recover the bodies.

"We should probably look," Nebbin says miserably, though it's pretty clear his eyes are squinched shut as he goes to do so.

I hope Regeris and Emileva are looking better than I am.

Once the brothers leave, he turns to the others.

"So I guess we should keep looking for this overground before we go try to help Carli? Or should we do it the other way around?"

I vote for continuing to try to find the overground.

Note to Self: This is why you shouldn't post two actions at once! In the future, if you forget what else you wanted Kayleigh to do...so be it.

@DM Luke: Emi actually asked the old woman (not the Pharasmins) if Carli knew Trinia (and she asked another question, too). Mostly my fault for having Kayleigh bounce so quickly from the old woman to the Pharasmin body collectors. I'll try not to do that again.

Kayleigh doesn't shy away from looking at the two bodies. She tries to identify the dead and determine what killed them. Then she gives Nebbin a nod and says, "We were given an order to find Trinia, so that takes precedence." She takes her Guard service quite seriously.

Assuming no one's in a great rush, I'll have her take 20 on what I assume will be a Perception check (total 23); I'll roll a Knowledge (local) to try to recognize the victims.

Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

No, that's my pure bad for somehow completely missing Emi's question -
I think I intended to carry on two conversations and then forgot to actually write the second part.

"Seventeen years," the woman replies to Emileva.

She considers her other questions. "No, I don't think she's ever been to the castle. Sometimes they would go up to Fort Korvosa, but never so far as the castle. And no, she doesn't know Trinia."

She looks back down at her dead males, then looks back up at Emi and the others with a hint of accusation in her eye.

"That's why you're here then, right? Same as the Queen's Guard. You're looking for the girl the Queen's accused of killing the King? Looking for some justice for the Queen?"

She laughs, hysteria in the tone of her voice. She has blood on her hands and she's absentmindedly wiped some of it onto her forehead.

"You're all come to the wrong place for justice!" She devolves into a crying fit over her dead.

---

The canvas of the wain is split in the back with a loop to hang one flap on the wagon frame. This lets light and air into the wagon, which smells like the offal of the dead masked thinly with perfume or incense. In retrospect you probably wish you could take this act back. The dead are waxen and obscene. Wooden, inhuman and utterly unrecognizable as your quarry. Also dead of slashing wounds.

"...I disagree, ma'am." Tassira speaks up. "The more we learn, the more I realize we've come to the right place."

"The people of Bridgefront have been suffering for too long. While we may not have had much hope of effecting change for the better on our own, we can do so together." She straightens her spine up. "Once we resolve the matter of Trinia, we'll get Carli back from the Queen's Guard. This offence to justice will not go unanswered."

Regeris looks over the bodies in the canvas with his typical neutral expression, letting the more sensitive of the group deal with the bereaved. "This is a horror. We have to find her."

Deciding there is no luck to be had with the canvas he goes to the group while Tassira offers some words of encouragement to the woman.

"We need to start searching out this artist's overground, unless we get an opportunity to speak with the soul of Trinia's stepmother. I'm unsure if the Pharasmans will go in for that sort of thing but we should try."

Do we have an answer on if we can do a speak with dead?

Emi doesn't contradict the woman. She thinks the woman's accusation is on target enough to make trying to argue some distinction from it petty.

Her answer is simply "I don't now why to be honest. We'll find out what we can for you."

She goes to join Regeris, and overhears Tassira's promise as she's walking. Emi winces at it. Does she really believe we can deliver on that promise?

"Yes, Artists Overground first."

Regeris - These brothers cannot cast the spell. They've promised to relay the request to Keppira when they get back to the Cathedral of Pharasma, which means you can't get that spell cast in the immediate future unless you go with them.

Interpreting Tassira's Diplomacy check as a Gather Information use...

Looking around, you see that Wave Street is a mess, from the intersection with the bodies to the Pharasman's Wain. As the group tries to clear this crowd, Tassira finds an innocent enough-looking young man to ask directions. He clutches the hand of a younger boy with one hand and carries a small bag of groceries in the other. As Tassira asks for directions, the boy notices Nebbin emerging from the crowd in his guards cloak and his eyes go as wide as saucers. He hears Tassira's question and points further down Wave Street.

"A couple blocks down. On your right. At Black Street," the man answers.

What you find at Black Street is a typical Bridgefront block. At least four separate constructions built around and upon one-another in a two-to-three story jumble. On its southern side the three facing buildings are apartments. Perhaps a third of the windows are boarded. On its eastern side (facing Black Street) there are two boarded up street shops incorporated into the hulk.

On it's northwest side there's a place with an open door and a placard outside that names it 'Perrin's Perch'. There's a second sign hung from the first that reads, 'upon the World's Stage'. Music and voices spill out of the open door and into the small crowd milling around outside.

The 'streets' facing the place are really alleyways, cluttered with street stalls, half of them abandoned. Broken or discarded furniture and trash lie in heaps everywhere. Nearby buildings lean over the street so close that they almost touch.

"I'm not taking off my guard cloak or badge," Kayleigh says stubbornly. "I signed up for the bad along with the good when I promised to serve Korvosa. If we're ashamed to be counted among the guard we should turn in the cloaks and badges, not hide them when things get tough."

Belatedly realizing that she's being preachy, the priestess suggests, "How about a couple of us go inside in full guard regalia while the others lurk outside incognito and look for Trinia trying to slip away or other suspicious behavior?"

"Wait a minute though, we're not really even sure what Trinia looks like. Unless she runs like a rabbit at the sight of us, how do we know who she is? If she's collected about the situation she could casually walk out without us knowing."

"Give me ten minutes inside to get the lay of the place before you come in. I can try to identify her first, or see if anyone who might be her changes behavior when they see you."

She looks Regeris up and down. "How wedded are you to that cloak? If you'll take it off, you're my date. Two sets of eyes will be better than one."

I might have missed it, but we haven't gotten a physical description of her have we?

Regeris takes off his cloak without even thinking about it, stuffing it in the bottom of his pack. He looks to Kayleigh, speaking slowly and patiently.

She is young, be gentle.

"Kayleigh, we are in a complicated political situation. A new monarch has arisen, and with her we see signs of a potential tyrant, the very thing the Everbloom teaches us to fight against. Her own Field Marshal distrusts her so much, that we have been hired to get to Trinia before the Queen's guard can. Cressida could be fired, imprisoned, or even executed for giving us this mission."

He points at Tassira. "Let's say Tassira is accused of a crime she did not commit. The Queen's guard then show up at the temple, murdering everyone they find. Different guards then show up asking for information on Tassira's location. Are you going to help them? Even if they say 'Don't worry, we're the good guards'? These cloaks are an asset in some situations, but a liability in others. We need to be pragmatic if Trinia is to survive."

Regardless, he stows his cloak and agrees to go with Emi.

At Emileva's flippant words, Kayleigh flashes an angry glare Emi hasn't seen from her comrade since their semi-standoff over the prisoners taken at Gaedren Lamm's fishery. The priestess doesn't yet dare to stand up to Regeris.

"People's faith in the Guard has been shaken," she says a bit petulantly. "Who will restore citizens' faith in the institution if not us?"

"If you think guard cloaks and badges will spook people then don't wear them. I'll stay outside--in my Guard regalia--in case some citizen needs my help." Her countenance softens a bit as she adds, "Good luck."

Once Regeris and Emi have departed, Kayleigh turns to Tassira. "As much as I'd love to help your mother get over her addiction, I've already promised to help Carawyn first. My magic hasn't worked on her yet because her addiction is still strong, even after going without shiver for days. You need to keep your mother away from the stuff or I'll have no chance with her either. Maybe Emi can help you in that regard--she's a tough person to stand up to. And as soon as I can get Carawyn clean, I'll devote all my spells to your mother. OK?"

Female Human Slayer (Vanguard) 8 | HP: 34/83 | AC: 23 (T: 13, F: 20) | CMB: +12, CMD: 24 | F: +9, R: +8, W: +5 | Init: +6 | Perc: +11, SM: +10 | Speed 20'

Kayleigh's emotional flare up doesn't phase Emi in the least.

"Look, I'm not telling you to do one thing or another. As I've mentioned before, there are advantages to having at least one of us not identified with the Guard."

"But, so we're clear on the question. If the Guard has an image problem, it's because the Guard created an image problem for itself. I'd expect the Guard to fix it. That's not me. I have neither been recruited nor joined up with the Guard. I don't take orders, I do favors. I help out when it seems the thing to do. I don't draw pay, and I don't owe them a damn thing."

"So, here's a question for you to think about while you wait. If you knew Trinia was innocent, and that if you handed her over to the Guard today, she would be tortured and put to death tomorrow, would you give her up? That is the penalty for treason, there is no appeal."

"If you think Kroft or the guard is going to shield her from the Queen's investigator, or make the case to him that she's innocent, and then all will be well for everyone, you better take a look around. Or, just think back to what we saw a little earlier today. If the Queen's investigator wants her from the Guard he will have her from the Guard."

"You're wearing a holy symbol and that cloak, maybe you should think hard about where the line will be drawn when you have to choose which one to keep."

Emi glances at Regeris. "Alright, let's go do this."

Before they walk in the door, Emi slides her arm around Regeris' arm linking them together. When they're inside she takes a look around.

Bridgefront - Perrin's Perch
--------------------------------------------------

Inside Perrin's Perch, the lighting is very low and it takes a moment for Emileva and Regeris's visions to adjust. The pair have stepped directly into the common room of a pot-house and tavern. There's a bar in the center of the room with a set of stairs behind it ascending to a second floor. An assortment of tables and chairs fills the room. Only two of these seem occupied, but as the eyes grow accustomed to the fug you begin to see that there are private booths along the walls and these may hold other patrons. A small stage takes up the corner to your right as you enter. On the stage is a seated man with a drum and a standing man with a five-stringed instrument. These two play for a dark-haired woman who dances sensuously in the center of the floor.

As the two stand there taking in the scene a barmaid passes by.

"Sit anywhere you want."

Bridgefront - Outside Perrin's Perch

Shortly after Emi and Regeris disappear into the bar there's a rumble of more distant thunder out to sea. This summer rainstorm hasn't spent its strength yet. A thin but steady flow of people pass through this little plaza as the three stand there. Kayleigh receives her share of stares, but none of these passers has anything to say, and folks seem to rush away faster than they approach. No one enters or exits the tavern for a long while as the three stand their vigil.

Kayleigh fumes silently outside from the verbal smackdowns laid on her by Regeris and Emileva. When the locals start to give her the stinkeye as well, the cleric spits, "Fine!" and starts to remove her guard's cloak. Then she abruptly stops, opting to leave it on.

"I'm not sure I can be a vigilante," she admits flatly to Nebbin and Tassira. "Besides, if at least one of us isn't identified as a member of the Guard, aren't we sort of engaged in a kidnapping?"

A nearby booth is unoccupied, easy accommodation for Emi and Regeris. Your adjusting eyes reveal others in the booths - several in fact. These seem to be clustered by the stairs. Two small booths of men. Their attention doesn't stray much from the dancer.

She seems to sense better tips from the men than from you two. She gradually sidles her way in their direction and is rewarded for her efforts. Several of the men tip the attractive girl, and one gets up to dance with her. The strings player steps closer in reflexive protectiveness - a tell, perhaps -
then relaxes back into his music as the dancing man seems able to keep his hands to himself. Though the men at the tables seem able to enjoy themselves, you notice none of them are drinking.

There are also house bouncers in evidence, manning doors here and there. As you consider these, the barmaid comes up and asks you how she can help you.

Standard fare available here, though it's a little early to get a dinner.

A server goes up the stairs with a tray of food and comes back just after with empty wine bottles.

"Oh, I don't mind Emi; it's actually nice to have an independent thinker like her as part of our group. I'm bothered more by how prevalent distrust of the Guard is among the common folk of Korvosa. Yet I'm beginning to understand it. The Guard is fractured at best, corrupt at worst. They failed in their duty to keep the peace in the rioting after the King's death and Queen's ascention. And now the Queen's private guard is killing people in the streets, assassins are killing families in their homes...and it seems like we five are the only ones trying to do something about it."

"Oh, and I totally agree with your assessment of how to proceed...IF we can track down our quarry."

Kayleigh then turns to Nebbin to make sure the affable lug is keeping an eye on the building Regeris and Emileva entered, and he is...while also keeping a protective eye on herself an Tassira. She gives him a quick nod and brief smile, both of which Nebbin immediately mirrors.

Tassira is quiet for a moment, her throat tightening.

Olaf...

"...I'm reminded of an expression Father used to tell me." She straightens herself up. "'Nothing worth accomplishing is ever easy.'"

"Or, to put it more succinctly, in our family motto--" She takes a breath, her eyes shining. "'No Shortcuts.'"

"We have some power to effect change now. It's not much, and change won't happen right away, but we can do something now. I'm thinking of getting enough funds together to open a rehabilitation centre for shiver addicts once things have calmed down somewhat--maybe I can convince Field Marshal Kroft to have the Guard sponsor it, or something. It'd send a good message to the people that their concerns are being heard."

"...that, and I need to know why Olaf... why he died. Who killed him." Tassira puts a hand to her eyes, wiping away a tear that was threatening to run down her cheek.

As Regeris talks to the barmiad, Emi moves one of her hands to rest atop his, holding it. She wants to discreetly send the message "if you're thinking about him honey, no, look elsewhere" to the barmaid.

After she leaves Emi suggests "As soon as she returns with the order we should take it and move upstairs. Our time is short before the others come in. If it's a private space and we're stopped, just tell them we want to talk more intimately and the noise down here prevents it."

Regeris' diplomatic skills aren't much but he manages to be polite as he fishes for information.

I think a secret message is just a straight bluff check.

The barmaid looks over at the dancer and her admirers.

"Some moths," she shrugs. "Kateryne is her name. I can't keep her brothers' names straight. Those others are drawing pay right now. They couldn't buy drinks if they wanted to. Ol' Harpe would just tell their bosses and they'd get sacked. Or worse!"

She nods her head in the direction of "Ol' Harpe" a man standing behind the bar, barely to be made out in the darkness of this place.

"I'll get your order.." she says.

She comes back a few moments later with glasses and a bottle of dark, suspicious looking stuff. The bread and cheese that follow are both hard but edible.

Up the stairs?

In agreement!

Regeris thanks and tips as well as he can without drawing attention before nodding to Emi so they can make a move for the stairs.

There's a sign hanging from a nail in the bannister of the stair. It reads,

1 Common Room
2 Private Rooms
3 The Perch

The men at the tables give Emi and Regeris a look-over as they climb the steps to the second floor, but none of them has anything to say.

At the top of the stairs is a landing with a small table and two chairs. A man who was sitting in one of these stands up as the two of you get to the top of the steps. There are two hallways off this landing with doors to either side. There's also another set of steps, right next to the ones you just climbed, that lead up to 'The Perch'.

Knowledge (local) DC 15:
The man on the landing looks familiar and it nags you for a moment where you've seen him. Suddenly you recall he was a guard on the pier at Eel's End.

With the bottle in one hand and her other arm again linked with Regeris's Emi walks up the stairs. She spots the man at the top landing as one of the security guys from Eel's End and tucks that information away for later.

She leans into Regeris and whispers into her ear. "Follow my lead." and comes away giggling. At the landing she looks down each hallway then says to Regeris merrily "looks like one more flight up".

Emi smiles at the guard as she turns Regeris toward the next flight of stairs and continues on.

The guard stands aside to let the couple pass.

As Emi and Regeris take the first steps up the next flight, a door on the second floor opens up and a man walks out carrying his coat and leather tricorn hat. The man is dressed in black studded leathers and has jet-black hair and dark eyes. He gives Emi and Regeris a passing glance, then passes down the steps with his guard in tow.

Once the last flight of stairs is ascended, Emi enters the room at the top. She opens the door and takes a look around.

While Tassira waits for the duo to return, she looks back over at Kayleigh.

"So, um..." She shifts from foot to foot. "...Kayleigh, what was your impression of Madame Helvara?"

Her cheeks are turning a bit pink.

Kayleigh the Prude blushes a bit in return at Tassira's unexpected question. It had taken her what seemed forever to recognize Tassira's predisposition for female companionship. She'd seen Neziana cuddle with the mage once but had thought that strictly a 'cat thing.' And when Helvara had started showing an interest in the mage, at first Kayleigh'd thought the attention was some sort of ruse meant to make all the young friends trust the woman. This wasn't exactly the priestess's area of expertise, and she'd already committed a brutally insensitive faux pas bringing up the wanton killing in Korvosa's streets when Tassira had suffered a fresh loss. Still, Tassira was a friend so the Milanite considers her words a bit before replying.

"Helvara's certainly...attractive, physically. And she didn't betray our trust in her." Kayleigh winces at her poorly-worded backhanded compliment.

"I'd be wary...careful...if I were to pursue her romantically," she continues. "She's beautiful on the outside, for sure, but...to take and keep the job she's had at Eel's End...to just turn a blind eye to the plight of some of the girls under her roof, maybe even to feed their addictions like Carawyn...to categorize such folks as business resources rather than free people...I'd have a hard time reconciling that in my heart."

"But that's just me and I'm an idealist," the priestess adds with a sigh. "These past days since the King's death have revealed to me a stark truth: That most people in this city have a dark side they struggle to master...or don't. It's a rare thing to find someone whose heart is pure in these grim days."

Kayleigh's eyes fall upon Nebbin as she speaks, but they suddenly shift to the cobblestones briefly before returning to Tassira. "You should probably take my words with a grain of salt," she concludes. "I'm not very experienced in the mysteries of love."

Tassira listens to Kayleigh's observations quietly.

"That's alright. Neither am I." The mageling shrugs.

"Apparently, she's a Desnan, and not a Calistrian." She blinks. "That's what she told me back in the Grotto, anyway... perhaps she hopes to get away from Eel's End and move into a more respectable establishment."

"I'm thinking of paying her a visit to see if she knows anything about Olaf's--" She squeezes her eyes shut and sighs. "--death. Maybe she knows something--she must get a lot of customers."

Or maybe you're hoping she'll make you forget the pain. No.

Nebbin listens -- he'd been about to interject as the women discussed the guard, noting that they'd never came to the area he grew up in, so he can understand why people didn't think much of them -- but grows quiet again as the conversation switches to something he doesn't really understand (women, and love, and relationships...).

Back; very jetlagged still, but I'm hopeful I can be back to regular posting starting tomorrow.

There is no door at the top of the stairs. Instead the stairs come up in the center of a second common room. This one contains quite a few more patrons, sitting in pairs and groups, chatting naturally and drinking. To the left is a bar where two men are wrestling a tun of wine off a dumbwaiter and into place for tapping. Beyond the bar there are plenty of empty tables to choose from.

The far wall to the left has two sets of large double doors going out to a balcony. These doors stand open letting the breeze and the dim light of an overcast day into the room. From your vantage by the stairs it looks like the balcony is covered and that there are seats out there as well.

To the right, the tables and chairs that might normally fill this space have been stacked up in the corner to make space for four players who are acting out a scene from a play. A ring of standing spectators drinks and chats while the actors go through their lines.

As Emileva and Regeris stand there, two patrons stand up and leave - not by the stairs they just climbed, but by another door on the left wall that leads to a scaffold stairway down to the roof of the adjacent building.

--------------------------------------------------
Bridgefront - Outside Perrin's Perch

Outside, Tassira and Kayleigh's heart-to-heart is interrupted by the tavern door suddenly opening and a stream of armed toughs disgorging into the street. When they see the guards colors waiting for them outside the tavern door they stop cold, bunching at the doorway and deferring to the last of them to exit. This man takes a long look at the ladies and their giant companion, he sniffs, looks up at the sky and says to the others, "Looks like we're leaving at just the right time, boys. It's getting ready to rain."

He smirks at Kayleigh and leads his guards past the three and on their way back down to Wave Street.
