"Lord Felix is right, his passionate words strike to the heart of the matter. All I can say is that I understand duty, it has always made sense to me, I am neither a kind nor clever man, but I am fair, just and honest. I would not take this mantle lightly nor would I expect any man chosen to bear it without support. The last I will say on the matter is that if chosen I will never allow corruption to take hold in our hard won kingdom, and if not I will never fail in my duty and will perform any task given me to the utmost of my ability. This I swear." Dante sits back down and drinks his wine.

"No, not at all." Anastacia tells Rowan. Then she goes on to answer his main question. "It's fairly simple, really. Pharasma is the goddess of both birth and death. To her the circle of life is sacred. So my main mission will be to campaign against any undead that I may find. Of equal importance; I will tend to any birthing that I may, to ease the passage of the new souls into the world.
The cleric gives a slight smile. "The church of Pharasma would like to establish a strong presence in the area, to the glory of The Lady of Graves. And I..."
About this time Viktor steps up and begins his speech. So Anastacia's voice trails off while she listens to him, as well as Dante and Felix.

The wine is distributed by the servants to all those present. Ioseph, flanked by Jemandi and Ezvanki, taps on the side of his glass to garner everyone's attention. Once everyone stops their conversations, Ioseph steps forward and begins to speak.
"First I would like to thank everyone for coming to our illustrious city. I love Restov and its people and I think that the nobility gathered here illustrate all the qualities that make our country great. When we see a problem we act decisively to fix it. And gentlemen, we have a problem with banditry along the South Rostland Road. Our patrols are sufficient to keep the majority of trade safe, but the patrols do not address the root cause of the problem. The Stolen Lands have become infested with brigands and it is time that we deal with them directly. So in the name of the Lord Regent I wish to charge the people in this room to remove the thieves that are attacking our trade and establish a small barony in the region. It is time that civilization comes to the Greenbelt and I and my comrades believe that you are the ones to do it. After much discussion we have decided that Viktor Stovyet should be the one to lead this expedition." Smiling, he advances on Viktor and firmly grasps his hand and after a quick congratulations he turns and raises his glass. "A toast to your bravery and luck to your expedition." He quaffs the wine and tosses the glass into the fireplace, his toast copied by Jemandi and Ezvanki.

Casimir simply nods, letting the crowd do as they please. The courtroom was not his forte, and it probably would never be for a while. Seating himself off to the side, he drank of the refreshment provided while reading a small manual, filled with notes.

He delayed too long to make any claim, any speech, and he paid a price for it. Such was the cautious route - without initiative, there was another who would take the claim.

Let him believe himself worthy to lead. A comedian will only go so far, after all, and he may rely on others far more than he should. We'll see yet just how far this will go.

The engineer lowered a set of goggles over his eyes, and continued to read, hiding where his vision would be directed.

Viktor smiles broadly and returns the Lord Mayor's handshake. He nods graciously at the toast, "Thank you." before raising his own glass to the rest of the crowd, "For Brevoy, and her sons and daughters!" He downs his own glass and throws it in the hearth.

Turning back to the Ioseph, Viktor bows, "Lord Mayor, I am deeply honored by the trust you and your comrades have given me. I will do my utmost to be worthy of this command."

He returns his attention to his companions and his face appears more serious than it has all night, "Friends, it has been a day of high tension and good fun in equal measure. I know there are those among you who are of yet unsure of me. Trust is not a thing to be earned in a day. I understand that, but while the time for understanding each other will come, we must cooperate now if we are to survive. I will be drawing up initial plans for our expeditionary squads. I am willing to take counsel and if you have any preference on who you wish be paired with or otherwise feel free to share that with me. I promise to take it into consideration, but ultimately the squads need be functional and I will not compromise our effectiveness."

He looks around for any questions or concerns.

Day: Calistril 25, Location: RestovThe morning breaks cold and clear as you gather at the West Gate of Restov. It looks like it will be a sunny day although it still will probably not get above freezing. The South Rostland Road runs east-west through the city, paralleling the Shrike River. The river itself moves westwards fast enough that there is no ice except near the banks. As you look across the river you can see the northern expanse of the Tors of Levenies. Although you can't see it from here you know the plains known as the Dunsward lies between you and the mountains, home to savage centaur tribes. Looking west towards your destination you see the South Rostland road extending into the distance sandwiched between the river and rolling hills. The road is mostly clear of snow, but the ground is frozen hard. About 20 miles down the road you know there is a hamlet called Nivakta's Crossing.

<< Lord Mayor's Meeting Hall, Restov // Calistril 24th // 18:30 >>

Majda was begging the laborious work of standing after Viktor's initial speech, when Felix beats her to the punch. He calls for more people to step forward and offer themselves as leaders, even mentioning her by name. She makes it to her feet in time for the Lord Mayor to cut off the proceedings and announce Viktor the leader without anyone else having really spoken. The fact that she's crestfallen is clearly visible on her face. Her expression morphs into one of anger and frustration. I did arrive too late! If it weren't for my damned foot, maybe I would have been giving speeches the last few minutes instead of sitting down and resting. Another man in charge! I rode for days to not even be heard. Majda takes a few deep breaths, sighs, and forces a smile onto her face. She's suddenly not feeling very social though and makes her way over to her gear, picking it up and hobbling out to go spend some time with Thunder.

<< Restov // Calistril 25th // Early morning // Very Cold (25 F)>>

Majda arrives early to the gates, ready to travel. She waits until Viktor arrives and then immediate seeks him out. She's rides up to him on Thunder, looking down at the tall man. "Hello, I'm Majda Orlovsky. We didn't actually have the chance to meet yesterday. Anyway, if you are to lead us, I want to be involved. I intended to vie for the position myself. I'm not sure what you did to draw the Lord Mayor's attention so quickly, but I suppose congratulations are in order." She smiles at him. He'd better not be a buffoon.

"What would you have me do? I am a skilled rider, hunter and navigator. I am also capable of conducting sensitive negotiations. Finally, I am a priestess of the wild. The power of nature itself flows through me." She rests her hand on her morning star, leaning back in the saddle with one eyebrow raised, awaiting instructions. Thunder snorts, and stamps at the man nervously. He takes half a step sideways, jostling Viktor with his flank. Madja absentmindedly clucks and guides the horse away from Viktor with her knees. She strokes the massive stallion's mane to calm him.

After the announcement

Marick stands up and nods his head. Seems like a good choice but we will see. He grabs a half filled bottle of wine and heads for the door.

Next morning

The morning feels cold and the sun seems a little too bright. [i]I guess I should have left that last half bottle.[i] Marick thinks as he sees Viktor and Majda talking.

Hello fellow compatriots are we ready to begin this fine adventure. Viktor I am willing to go with any of the groups but I do have many options when it comes to trouble. I can attack both from afar and up close and I do have ways to heal myself. If we ever find to supplies and time I can also brew potions for everyone to add in healing the group."

Viktor breaths in the crisp morning air, feeling its cleansing freshness race through him. He's dressed in his well worn leathers and his tall spear leans against his shoulder. His eyes are slightly red with lack of sleep, but he has an eager look in his eyes. He looks up at the woman approaching him on horseback and returns her smile as she introduces herself.

The beast knocks him back a step and he has to put weight on the haft of his weapon to catch himself. He chuckles and shakes his head, "Appears your horse is eager this morning. A strong, spirited animal. They say a mount often takes traits from its rider." He looks up at her appraisingly.

"Lady Majda, yes, I regretted not having the chance to speak with you yesterday. I'm glad to hear you are so motivated, and wish you had spoke your intentions yesterday. From the conversations around the Manor you seemed to be a favorite in the running."

He pauses for a moment considering his words. "The fact that so many were willing to support you means you've got good leadership qualities. That is a valuable asset to our group and I certainly intend to put it to good measure. We will be travelling as a group, but there will be times that we need to split up into squads to accomplish multiple objectives. When that happens I need capable people who I can trust have our groups best interests at heart to lead these squads."

He looks up at her soberly, "I want you to head up one of these squads. You are mounted which offers additional mobility, and your attunement with nature will help you in the unknown lands we will be exploring. Bear in mind that some may take exception to having a woman in charge. I will tolerate none of that ideology in my presence, but when you're on your own I expect you to keep your men in line. I also expect you bring up any concerns that you might have about our mission to me as they arise. As to your squad, use your best judgement, but feel free to come to me for advice or even just to talk."

He sighs, "I know I'm dropping a lot on you at once. I'd intended to seek you out last night and tell you my intentions, but you left in such a hurry after the announcement was made. I'll be sending your squad ahead after we've been on the road for a while, so in the meantime tell me a little about yourself or ask what you will of me."

He nods at the elf, "Thank you, Marick. I was just speaking to Majda about how we will utilize our resources. The ability to heal and brew potions is quite an asset. If you'll give us a moment I'll be happy to speak with you at length." He looks back up at Majda awaiting her response.

Anastacia is not displeased with Mayor Sellemius' choice for a leader. It was certainly better than having an Orlovsky chosen for the role. If that had happened, the nepotism would have been immediate and rampant. There was only one Medveyd in the group other than Viktor himself, so that would automatically reduce the level of cronyism.

Anastacia heads outside, the sun was setting, so it was time to perform her devotions the the Lady of Graves. Both the setting sun and the rising sun are sacred to Pharasma. The setting sun, symbolic of death, and the rising sun, symbolic of birth.
Anastacia had chosen the setting sun as her time of meditation. it seemed to bring her closer to her father and mother, both people she had never known.
Reporting early to the West gates, Anastacia takes note of of Majda's magnificent steed. She, of course will have to walk, and packing a heavy load of armor and kit as well. Anastacia is not too jealous, however. She knows she would most likely topple off on the far side if she were to try to mount a horse.

Despite his earlier comment, I do hope that Viktor will be a capable leader... Rowan says, moreso to himself than to anyone present. Noticing the High Priest Keegh's displeasure with the group earlier, Rowan approaches him respectfully.

"I have already selected the squads. Dantalion will be with you, as will your cousin Casimir. I'd planned to give Wilhelm to Felix's squad and give you the warrior Vors." I'd hoped the lad's brighter outlook would temper Felix's... zeal. "I suppose I could put Wilhelm with you instead. As for Lanya, for now she's with me. The following morning.

Rowan awoke early and took a stroll around the manor grounds in the brisk cold air. After clearing his head with the moderate exercise, he looks for a quiet place for meditation where he can also watch the sun rise. Once finished he begins to head back to the manor to grab his packed belongings when he sees Viktor, Magda, and Marick having a discussion amongst each other.

Good morning my lady, gentlemen. He greets cheerfully. Congratulations on being selected Lord Viktor, and I do wish you success. Marick, good to see you again. How are you this morning? Finally turning to the lady mounted upon her great steed. Lady Majda, I presume. I regret not having had a better introduction. I am Rowan Gideon. It's a pleasure to meet you. And what is the name of this fine horse? He asks, impressed with the care given to raising such a well-bred animal.

She grins at him, a little frown furrowing her face.
Perhaps I could have, but would you have followed a woman? Would you follow me? I do not desire leadership as much as some others do Felix."

The next morning Lanya comes dressed in her winter attire, apparently prepared for cold days and nights. Though the cloth is thicker, her natural shapes seem only to be enhanced instead of hidden, the tailor of House Medvyed certainly knew what he was doing.

"Good morning all." She says as she sees a small gathering already.
Somehow she always seems to have a smile on her face.
"Congratulations again on your position Viktor, I trust in you. Make me proud in doing so." She adds with a wink.

"Anastacia, Majda, it is good to see you again this morning. And my what a wonderful horse Majda. I heard you were a skilled rider, but I have never seen your steed, he is magnificent."

She then walks over to Marick and Rowan, her hand extended. "Marick and Rowan was it not? I feel ashamed that I haven't taken the opportunity last night to get to know you better. I am Lanya Beladon of House Medvyed, glad that you're on board for this expedition."

By now it's apparent that her radiant grin is her most used expression. The young noblewoman seems to be bursting with excitement and enthusiasm. After any conversation with Marick and Rowan.
Lanya stretches her legs and arms a bit, loosening herself for the long trek they will undoubtedly make today.

"It's been too long since I was outside in nature like this, I think I should learn to ride a horse as well. These open plains call for faster transport don't you think guys?"

I'm completely lost on precisely what order these are in chronologically but they're all conversations that occur in order from my last post (if that helps).

Retroactive with Marick (amongst others):

Smiling cheerfully, Wilhelm returns Marick's nod and says, "I'm afraid I can't speak for the rest of my cousin's but I'm here not for land. I'm mostly interested in making sure the name Wilhelm Orlovsky won't fade into obscurity any time soon, yes? 'Twould be all too easy to sit in father's hall and sup on wine 'til the day I die, but where's the honor in that? I will say though that if this," Wilhelm gestures at his other cousins in attendance, "is indeed a coordinated land grand by old Poul then it's damned clever one. I was expressly forbidden to leave, if you'll believe it!." Wilhelm chuckles a bit at this and sips his wine. He cocks his head a bit suddenly, looking perplexed, and asks, "And you, Marick, what motivates you to be on this trip?"

Retroactive with Rowan/Viktor:

Know(Religion): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Looking levelly into the eyes of the hard looking man before him, Wilhelm grins and answers, "I would think you would also want to leave the icy foothills of the Icerimes if you saw them, friend. There's little but rolling hills covered in snow as far as the eye can see. It leaves a bit to be desired unless you're found of sitting on your arse. I figured I'd grow grey in beard and cloudy in eye long before I had a chance to distinguish myself in the world. Thus you see me here. As for my dear cousins, I'm afraid you'll have to ask them. We're a large brood, we Orlovsky's. I believe my great granduncle had something to do with that,"[/b] Wilhelm finishes with with a quip and wink.

He pauses and sips his wine as the man introduces himself. As he finishes speaking, Wilhelm's smile thins slightly and he glances over to Viktor to watch his reaction. Stifling a laugh, he arches his eyebrow a little as Viktor explains himself. When he's done speaking, Wilhelm addresses Rowan again, shaking his head slightly, "Well met, Rowan. I'm glad to hear that I'll be joined by another man of faith on this voyage. It seems we're rather thin on the ground here. Would it shock you if I told you I was the only noble training to be a paladin?" Wilhelm grins at the druid and winks cheekily. He then leans in and lowers his voice before continuing, "I'm afraid I shared your discomfort with his joke, though I'm doubtful he meant any harm. As I said, he's a clever man with a quick wit. When you have a chance, I'd be interested to speak with you about Erastil. I'm afraid my exposure to him is fairly limited to what the Church of Iomedae has to say. Are you familiar with The Acts?"

The Acts of Iomedae is Iomedae's holy text.

Retroactive with Viktor/Lanya:

My reply here can be considered to have happened before the one in my last post.

Wilhelm listens attentively to Lanya's reply, as she finishes commenting on the the number of Orlovsky's present he will interject briefly, "I'm afraid that I'm also at a loss, my lady. Truth be told, it would make some sense. I'm sure someone as politically adept as yourself is aware, much like the rest of the kingdom, that Rogarvia's disappearance left my house in a tight spot. That said, if it is some ploy of Old Poul's, my father is a far better actor then I'd ever suspected. I could see the vein throbbing in his forehead as told me 'I'll be damned before I let you be a pawn for those Swordlord bastards!'." Wilhelm shrugs slightly, feigning an especially innocent expression. "I'm afraid I've never had quite as much of an interest in what's best for me house. Third son of a minor cousin and such."

Retroactive with Dante:

"I'm glad to hear it friend! You seem like the sort of man that I'd be glad to have it my back. I'm afraid I had to make haste on my way down here and haven't had time to go over my forms. Perhaps if we've time later we can have a spot of practice and sharpen up a bit, eh?" Wilhelm claps the older man on the shoulder and grins cheerily.

Retroactive with Anastacia:

Know(Religion): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
As the slightly shorter woman is introducing, Wilhelm glances over her equipment, noting that much of it is battered and clearly well used. Nodding in appreciation of her apparent skill, he clearly perks slightly on hearing that she is a cleric of Pharasma. As she begins to leave, he speaks quickly, "My lady, I'm afraid that my own knowledge of Pharasma is fairly limited. I've devoted myself to Iomedae, but I appreciate learning what I can from others of faith when the opportunity presents itself. If there's time on the road, I hope you'll consider sitting down with me to discuss theology. My copy of The Acts is sadly back in my father's home, but I should be able to talk a bit about my Lady, the Inheritor."

Retroactive after Viktor's speech:

Also after everyone but the mayor.

For the wine.
Know(Nobility): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

Wilhelm smiles and nods in reply to Viktor's sweeping gesture. I had rather hoped to lead this grand venture, but if none other here's a man worth respecting. He's quite the diplomat. As Viktor finishes speaking, Wilhelm eyes the room as he thinks, giving others a chance to speak.

An attendant walks up beside him, offering a glass of wine. He takes it gratefully, smiling and nodding his head at the servant in thanks. Swirling the fine Corentyn wine in it's glass, he sniffs and nods appreciatively. I suppose this is the big moment then. As Dante finishes his speech, Wilhelm's smile grows slightly bemused. I don't think we ever had a proper claim on the Stolen Lands in the first place. Ah well, the man spoke well and I'm heartened that he'll be with us. As several others of the group seem to voice support for Viktor's bid, Wilhelm's smile wavers slightly and he nods along. His smiles continues to dim as Felix ends his speech. Yes, I suppose leadership is something more then just being the man first into battle. It's a willingness to do what's right, even in the face of hardship. This is one thing I can most certainly do. I came here seeking glory and fame, but I also came to lead and prove myself worthy.

Taking a deep breath and a fortifying gulp of wine, Wilhelm steps forward. "Friends, I feel humbled to be hearing such stout hearted men and women placing themselves forward for the leadership of this expedition. I'm afraid I will not necessarily be able to exceed the example they've set, but it is my solemn duty to try." Wilhelm smiles calmly as he gazes around the room, seeking every eye. "I am serious, if perhaps the first time tonight, when I say it is a solemn -nay sacred- duty to speak now. When I left my home I made an oath to myself that I would seek to lead this expedition. I see now that my oath may have been to perform an act of futility even before the first word was spoken. Knowing, as I do now, that men as great as dear Viktor, here," he continues while gesturing at the raven-haired man, "would be seeking the role, would have made it easy to conclude that I would not succeed. But I have made an oath. And an oath is not something I could so easily forsake. Thus I speak before in the face of sure defeat and nominate myself as a leader in our venture. Should you choose to support me, know that my heart will be as resolute in the face of duty as it is now speaking to you. I have the strongest confidence that whoever is chosen, we will succeed and our story will be sung for centuries to come." Wilhelm steps back a few paces and takes a sip of wine, still smiling serenely as the Lord Mayor makes his announcement. He joins the toast in full, tossing his glass into the fire.

When Viktor seems to be free, he approaches him with hand extended. "Congratulations sir! I think you are a fine choice and hope you won't be too worried by my little speech. So long as you still have the rest of the group's support, I too will have your back. I think you're a fine choice and am glad to see we'll have someone with a head on his shoulders leading us. Make sure we succeed and I promise I shan't hold this against you," he finishes with a jocular grin, his attitude making it clear he is, in fact, joking. After he's done speaking with Viktor, Wilhelm excuses himself, thanks the Mayor and the other patrons and finds his room.

Holy wall of text! And now, the next day:

The following day Wilhelm rises early and, after a quick hearty repast, takes his leave and prepares his gear for travel. If he can find a spot, he moves through a series of exercises with his sword, limbering up but not overworking himself. After the rest of the group is up and he sees they're beginning to prepare, he returns to his room for the remainder of his gear. Refreshing to be practicing once more, it's been too long on the road without the chance to clear my mind.

Returning from inside with his gear, he just barely arrives in time to hear Viktor assign him to Majda's squad. He nods his acquiescence and stands near her, enjoying the chill morning air.

Dante wakes from a fitful sleep, stretching in the cool dark of pre-dawn. He leaves his guest room, careful not to disturb the Mayor's serving girl who had shared his bed, and donned his armor in the hall. Throwing his pack and shield over respective shoulders he walks out of the manor and towards the west gate.

When he arrives he searches out Viktor, "My Lord Viktor, are we all assembled? Where would you have me?" the tall man said. Light steam rose on his breath in the frosty morning air, and the sun reflected a bit off of his armor.

Male Human Summoner 1

The sounds of something large would have heralded Casimir's arrival at the rendezvous. Small puffs of steam would jettison from smokestacks upon the back of the mechanical monstrosity. Today, one could clearly see, marked on the side of the unit, a designation: 'Talon,' as if reference to the three-pronged hands it had on each arm. Cold orbs seemed to flit in the darkness of the helm as it walked, slightly hunched forward.

Casimir himself appeared almost as he had at the mayor's house the other evening - robes of blue illustrated his figure, augmented by a tanned leather chestplate and matching bracers. A set of engineer's goggles adorned the top of his head, doubling as protection against the environmental effects of any real labor, like sand, but for now, it only guarded his eyes against the sun.

As he and his companion approached, he lifted his hand with a childish grin, perhaps too eager. "Hail and greetings, my friends!" he spoke as he neared, his voice bold and striking. "How are we today? I expect we'll be making quite the merry band indeed. Pray tell, I would beg forgiveness for not immediately congratulating you, Viktor, but I had some checklists yet to be made. Viktor nods in approval at Majda's assertive response, "Majda our first destination is Nivakta's Crossing. It is a small hamlet, but we should be able to restock on basic supplies there. With some of our partied encumbered by heavier armor or supplies we will not reach it until tomorrow.

I would like your squad to scout ahead and make sure the road is clear. We will be well within Brevoy's borders so the road is likely safe, but the centaurs do raid across the border occasionally, and if lightning does strike I'd prefer not to be caught unawares. If you encounter anything use your judgement as to whether you can handle it. If your opponent flees, unless there is a great need to capture them, let them run rather risk being led into an ambush."

He then turns to face the other's who approach and greet them, "Thank you, Rowan and well met, it is a fine brisk morning to begin our journey is it not?

Wilhelm, I would like to speak with you at greater length later, perhaps once we've reached the Crossing. Casimir, your meticulousness is appreciated, but for now I must ask you for haste. Dantalion you're going ahead as well, you three are with Majda and she will explain the details as to your mission. Good luck to you."

He nods again at Majda before turning away from her squad to face the others.

"Lanya, fair as always this morning. Yes, I believe we should all work on our riding skills as soon as we have the opportunity. Lack of mobility is our greatest limit at the moment. Once we have the resources finding appropriate transport for us all is a high priority."

"Sir Dante, you and Lady Anastacia are with me. I'd like to hear your thoughts on our combat readiness.

Marick, at some point I'd like a detailed report on the kind of potions and assets you have available."

He takes another deep cleansing breath of fresh air.

It is a fine day to put boots to the road.

His face breaks from its serious expression and some of the excitement he'd previously shown is visible. He turns to his companions and once everyone has gathered calls out, "This is a fine auspicious air I taste. Let us be about it, friends." He raises his spear in salute before turning his feet westward.

Majda I figure your squad can hustle for an hour to get a couple miles ahead of us.

"I will respect your wishes, Viktor."

To his squad.

"I'll have Caelus fly ahead of us and report back every half an hour. Also we can use his height to find any storm clouds."

Marick watches the scouting group take off and he adjusts his backpack and starts walking. He steps up next to Viktor as they walk. "Right now I have just some extracts that I can take but I can make potions to heal wounds (Cure Light Wounds), increase ones speed (Expeditious Retreat), increase ones size (Enlarge Person), among some others. The biggest problems is the time and money required to make them. I will also need a good lab at some time and then I can also make several alchemy items also."

Marick looked around and spots Rowan and the others in his group, "So what is the plan for each group?"

Wilhelm breaks his reverie when he hears his name and turns, eyes questioning to Viktor. He listens and then nods in affirmation before the newfound leader rushes away to other tasks. I suppose there's something to be said for not leading this pack of personalities. It'd be distinctly less at ease if I was rushing around right now trying to coordinate it all.

He steps closer to the rest of his group and listen to Dantalion before saying, "I look forward to traveling together, Dantalion. Your training of Caelus seems rather complete if he can do as much as you say. Most impressive. If you'll excuse me just a moment, i'd like to speak with my cousin." He nods politely before walking closer to Majda and saying, "Congratulations cousin on your appointment as lieutenant. I'm afraid we didn't have a chance to speak last night. Forgive me if my recollection is wrong, but I don't believe we've actually met? I'm the son of Meinhard Orlovsky of the Icerime foothill Orlovsky's. My father's seat is in the foothill above the Little Icerime. And you, m'lady?" After listening to her response, he'll continue, "Ah, I see. Very good. I apologize for prattling on, what are you orders?"

After Viktor is announced leader

Ahh good, now the fun begins. We will see if this man can lead, and at the first sign of trouble we can begin to move things against him. I will just have to make sure I am the one who advises against the plan of action that is his downfall.

Felix approaches Viktor and raises his glass. "A good showing, though I do not believe anyone really tried to run against you. Their hearts must have been swayed over by your speech. As it stands I will help you in any way you need. I know my way around a courtroom the way most of these gathered know their way around a sword, and Shei has seen fit to bless me with a little magical power though that is more of a burden than a blessing at times. I also took full advantage of the libraries back home, so you could come to me if we need to find answers to questions." Felix takes a long drink of his wine."Sadly I am not what one would call a social animal, so by your leave I would retire early for the night. We have a long life ahead of us."

Let him think on that, ingratiate yourself into his council. And on the off chance he turns out to be a good leader, well we are going to have our work cut out for us keeping him in that position."

That morning

Felix arrives without his usual drama. Dressed in leathers and wearing sensible boots, he seems to belong on the road today almost as much as he seemed to belong in court yesterday. The transformation is quite striking. Felix marches to Viktors side and calmly speaks. "What would you have of me this day sir."

Viktor calls out one last word to the scouting party before they depart, "Majda, be sure to to find a place to camp before nightfall and wait there for the party to catch up to you." (Edited to reflect what we're doing)

Just so everyone's on board. Nivatka's Crossing is 20 miles away. We'll make it 16 miles tonight and camp on the road. We make 2 forced march checks to get there tonight, but some people will end up fatigued and I don't see any reason to rush just yet. The plan is to get into town, spend an hour or two restocking supplies and getting back on the road instead of wasting a day in town.

For ease of organization and DM encounter rolling here are the standing orders for night watch: When we camp at night Squad 1 will take first shift, Squad 3 will take second and Squad 2 will take the last shift. Arcane casters that have expended spell slots that day are allowed to rest during their Squad's shift. A Squad on shift will have no less than two people awake and on watch at a given time. If two are not available due to injuries or other causes we will draw from another squad.

Viktor looks up at Felix's approach. He notes his functional attire with approval, and if his greeting isn't as warm as it has been to the others, it's not hostile either, "Ahh, Felix. I was hoping you'd arrive soon. Despite having rubbed some people the wrong way at Lord Ioseph's you still managed to garner quite a bit of support behind you even with not formally stepping forward yourself as a contender. You obviously have some considerable skill at court. It would be wasteful to ignore that talent. I've divided our group into squads and would like you to lead one." He eyes the man and his lips stretch slightly thinner, "I'm quite aware that you disapprove of me as leader. You made that clear with your speech earlier. I am operating under the hope that you truly want the best for this expedition and that I over time I will gain your trust. If I am mistaken in this, and you are merely after power or furthering your's or your family's agenda without concern for the mission then our relationship will sour quite quickly. For now, I understand that I have yet to earn your trust, but I do expect you to work with me. Also know that my ears are open to your counsel. I do not plan on relying solely on others, but any leader who ignores his followers' abilities will fail on his own."

He pulls out a folded paper from his pouch and skims it over, "As to your squad, I've assigned to you Rowan, Vors, Marick and Venkar. For now we be travelling together as Majda's squad scouts ahead. Later, however, you will be assigned idividual missions. I expect you to handle your squad fairly but firmly and for you to share with me any concerns that you feel cannot be handled at the squad level."

He offers his hand to shake, "I'm putting trust in you, Felix. I hope I am not given cause to regret it."

Male Human Oracle 3 (Seer)

Felix waits patiently and respectfully to what Viktor has to say. "We will see how you shape up as a leader, but so far you are at least thinking ahead which is a good start. My one complaint is that we didn't hear why you should be leader, all we heard was that you were good at making friends. Rule should never be a popularity contest." Felix takes a deep breath and composes himself for a second. "As for my agenda as you put it, well it is a simple one. Take back the stolen lands. If I wanted to further my family's agenda I would have stayed in the courts."

There is a short pause before Felix lets out a sigh. "It is going to be a hard road ahead, and we are going to have to make some hard choices before it is over. I just don't know who will be able to make those choices yet. Until any of you prove yourself I can no... no will not commit to any one of you as a leader I can endorse. What I can tell you is that I will do my best to make sure none of your mistakes, or those of the others, endanger this mission."

Male Human HP 7/12 | AC 14 T11 F13 | CMD 14 | F +0 | R +3 | W +0 | Init +3 | Per +3

Viktor lets his hand return to his side as Felix makes no move to accept his gesture. Arrogance incarnate, this one is.

His eyes harden and any semblance of friendliness fades from his face, "I suppose your infallibility puts you in a position to judge all those around you, yes? Very well, Felix. I'll not try to persuade you further. Keep in mind that this is not your home court and any power you hold from here on out is earned. Your patrons at home will not save you in the wilderness if you make the mistake of alienating everyone around you. You may wish to speak to your squad members now, but for your sake you probably will want to keep the words you speak to them at a minimum. You seem to have a knack for garnering enmity each time you open your mouth."

He turns and walks away from the man.

Three soldiers begin to raise the porticullis at Restov's West Gate. At the same time two other soldiers unfurl the flag of Brevoy, followed by that of House Surtova and finally that of Restov itself. While this is going on the various farmers begin bringing their wagons through the gate and towards the marketplace. Most watch the gathering of nobility with some interest and several of them make sure their path comes close enough that they can offer their wares. It being late winter, the quality and quantity is not that good.

Marick shakes his head at the people offering up wares and walks out of the gate. Scanning the land south of them he pulls up the collar of his coat against the wind and settles into a rhythmic walk for the long walk.

It does surprise me a little, good Sir Wilhelm, I thought for sure I had counted enough of your family here to fill at least two of every vocation. Rowan replies in good jest. I agree that Sir Viktor may have stuck a boot in his mouth with that comment but otherwise he seems to be a good man. Rowan pauses a moment to sip some of the wine before continuing. I can't say that I am familiar with the Acts of Iomedae, have you brought a copy with you? I'd like to read it sometime.

Well met, Sir Thunder Rowan says kindly, Now if you'll excuse me, I must finish preparations to depart.

Viktor's eyes watch the portcullis and as West Gate stands open some of the anger bleeds from his grey eyes. This road is as our lives, leading us into the unknown. I've never felt so alive as right now.

As Brevoy's banner unfurls he smiles to himself and lets his clear voice sing out a quiet tune.

"Let us raise boldly our banner,
Though a storm of hostile storms is howling
Though sinister forces oppress us today,
Though our tomorrow is uncertain.
Oh, this is the banner of the whole mankind,
The sacred call, the song of resurrection,
It's the triumph of labor and justice,
It's the dawn of the brotherhood of all peoples"

Dante fell into step next to Viktor, waiting for him to finish singing. "Lord Vicktor, as per your request I've studied our tactial situation. You've a mind for it yourself as you've already assigned us to balanced squads, I would use that construct as a siege weapon or mobile cover, also I'm a little concerned with the lack of fighting men. Viktor nods at Dante, "Yes, I will need to find time to pull Casimir aside and pick his brain about that thing's abilities. I hear your concern for lack of fighting men. There are a few here that wield both sword and sorcery, but there are limitations in that. You are never quite as good at either as a specialist. I'm a fair hand with spear and sword, but I never got the knack for fighting in real armor. I would love to improve my form if you'd be up for some training on the road. I hope I'm not presuming too much. Your skill as a teacher comes highly valued and I think many would like the opportunity to learn."

He pauses thoughtfully for a moment before continuing, "In the short term we will just have to make due with what we have. If our mission goes well, in time I'm sure we'll have new recruits drawn to our cause, but we must survive until then. I will consider this problem further, but please let me know if any inspiration strikes you."

He turns his head and sees Marick walking near and his eyes widen, "Ah, Marick, forgive my rudeness. I was momentarily distracted from our conversation earlier. The potions you describe sound incredibly useful and my go a long way in filling some of the gap in manpower sir Dante and I were discussing. Finding you adequate work space and resources will be a high priority."

Turning back to Dante, "Marick here can create potions which I believe would serve as quite the force multiplier. He mentioned draughts to make our soldiers faster, and immense in size, as well as drinks of healing." He smiles at the soldier, "You're right we could use more swords, but if we can strengthen those we have it may get us through."

Retroactive with Rowan continued:

Wilhelm chuckles at Rowan's jest and nods his agreement as the druid pauses to drink. "A fair few of us here so I can hardly blame anyone for thinking it a conspiracy. That said, if it was some scheme by Old Poul, then I've been duped into coming." Wilhelm scratches at his neatly trimmed beard and looks thoughtful a moment before continuing, " I was expressly forbidden from coming by my father. I rather thought he would burst a vein in his forehead when I walked out despite him."

After Rowan has finished speaking, Wilhelm looks a little discomforted and shrugs before saying, "Sadly, due to the conditions I left in, I had to leave my copy of The Acts at my home. I'd be happy to recite what I can for you when we camp. The road is a rather long one, I imagine, so there ought be some time." He grins a bit, his temporary gloom seemingly banished by the thought.

I've got most of my actions worked out for whenever Majda gives out orders, but I don't want to post something and then find out that she ordered something else completely.

Felix smirks as his new found superior stalks away. He shows some promise, and if no one here likes me... well that will be sad, but being correct is often a lonely path.

With a turn and a quick step Felix goes to round up his squad. He will wait patiently for everyone to get their things and then signal to those who are assigned to him, trying to wave them over as quickly as possible.

Whomever posts first will be the first he manages to wrangle down. He will try to wave in the rest of his team as they emerge so feel free to join in the squad conversation as soon as you can.

Marick nods at Viktor, "Not a problem I know you are busy. I might surprise you in the how much damage I can put out when the fighting starts, I just don't have the armor that Dante has." nodding towards the fighter. "It interferes too much with my abilities."

Marick continues walking and notices Felix rounding up their group and wanders over to him. "Congrats on the lieutenant position I am sure our group will be a hell of a force with the numbers we have. Let the group up a head be the scouts and we can be the hammer when the opposition shows its self."

The cleric watches the opening of the gates and the unfurling of the flags with disinterest.
"No thank you, please." She tells the farmer that offers her wilted turnips from a wicker basket.

"Thank you for your politeness." She tells Viktor gravely. "But for when titles matter; mine should be acolyte. Not Lady. I am of common birth, and have low ranking in the church."

Anastacia listens with appreciation to Viktor's song and when the time comes, she strides out with as much energy as her heavy load allows. Backpack shouldered, shield on arm, and her mace gripped in hand.

"Well met Wilhelm, I am from the Choral Hold Orlovskys. At the head of the Choral river in the foothills east of Mt. Veshka. We'll have plenty of time for further introductions on the road. We've got sixteen miles to cover before darkness and it looks like I'm the only one mounted." Majda looks around, calling over Casimir and his metal monster. Once Wilhelm, Dantalion and Casimir are standing in front of her in a line she instructs them, "Our goal is to make Nivakta's Crossing by nightfall. There should be little threat, as the road is well withing Brevoy's borders. Our job is to make sure it's clear for the other two squads who will be coming behind us. Casimir, you, your machine and Wilhelm take point. Dantalion will be in the middle. I'll bring up the rear as I have the greatest mobility on Thunder. Dantalion, please do have Caelus circle us as we go. He's got a much better chance of spotting danger than any of us on the ground."

Majda wheels Thunder around towards the now open gate, "C'mon boys, lets show them what House Orlovsky's rejects and a son of Sovyrian can when we work together! Hustle out!"

Majda sets what will be a brutal pace for Wilhelm in his heavy armor for the first hour of their journey. Then she slows down a bit, to preserve the squad's endurance. Along the way, Majda uses her sling and greater mobility to hunt, killing two snow hares and a grouse. Should be enough food for three of us, she thinks, smiling. The men can have the fresh food, I'll eat my rations.

Hustle for an hour, then forced march until we make it to Nivakta's Crossing. Taking ten on perception for a 12 the whole way to watch for threats. Also taking 10 on survival for a 15 to get along in the wild. Since we're already only moving at 20' due to Wilhelm, that means she can provide food for three people in the squad the first day.

For the month of Calistril it is beautiful day to be travelling. Although the air is cold, the sun is shining. Winter probably has some surprises left in her, but for now the promise of spring is in the air. The number of merchants on the road surprises you. It begins to become clear how important this road is to trade.

Majda's group finds about 16 miles down the road a fast running stream flows from the north into the Shrike. Someone has set up a small shrine to Abadar here and there is a clearing that has obviously been used a campsite many times. A rough firepit has been built and a few hundred yards up the stream is a large pond at the base of a 20' waterfall.

The temperature that night drops to around 10 degrees but otherwise proves uneventful other than there is a small meteor shower that occurs shortly after midnight. The moon is new and skies are crisp and clear so the visiblity is great.
