Trap Disarm Time: 2d4 ⇒ (3, 4) = 7
Tobias fiddles with the pressure plate. After roughly a minute has passed the entire party hears a KACHUNK! The walls on either side of the chamber are suddenly covered in hundreds of prickles. Close examination reveals that the prickles are the needlesharp tips of several hundred darts just barely protruding from cleverly disguised holes in the walls. If the trap had not been disarmed, anyone in the hallway would have been in the path of this death trap.
Tobias Taviston |
"That's more like it!" yells Tobias as he quickly gets to his feet and runs to the walls, setting down his pack he fumbles around in it until he finds a quill and ink.
Tobias hands his torch to Dorian momentarily as he begins scribbling down notes furiously.
Tobias is going to take 2 or 3 minutes examining the trap in its entirety. Taking 20 for 26 to examine the trap.

Bastion Augusta Raphiel |
Bastion grunts as he sees the man work , the results were shown not long later. " Nice work Private Taviston, Now if only you paid THIS much attention all the time and applied your enthusiasm to every task. You MIGHT do you namesake proud... as proud as a Taviston can be at least. " Looking in past the pressure plate and at the end of the hall.
" This would be the time to advance. Private Quart and Private Odalis, lead the way While I guard the rear with Private Aconite. Make sure to inspect the door as well.. there may be a trap upon it as well. "
Bastion Augusta Raphiel |
Bastion looks to Tobias and narrows his eyes. " Yes I am quite aware of your given name Private Taviston. But to use it is to show lack of discipline, not to mention we are neither relatives nor close friends. Private Taviston will suffice. " He nods approvingly to Gil's precautions, striking another torch to leave in this room.
Lilia Aconite |
"Sorry, Sir. He died between five and fifteen years ago, its hard to tell with the dry air. The good news is that the fall killed him, not a trap or horrible Monster. What the stuff in the vials is, I have no idea, but it is probably the most expensive thing he had with him, so he either worked alone, or the others left when he died."
JGray |
- The pressure plate, when stepped on, releases two pendulums (one behind each wall) which begin swinging. The first pass of the pendulums release locks on two set of springs (again, one behind each wall). The expanding springs provide momentum to the hundreds of darts which are propelled forward and into the chamber at high speed. However, that is not all.
- The pendulum likely (again, without taking the wall apart you can't be certain) swings back. As it does the pendulum recoils the springs, relocking them into a primed position. The same motion of the pendulum also releases a reloading mechanism, dropping a fresh set of darts down into the firing tubes.
- How many times the tubes can reload and fire is an unknown quantity but a quick check of the math suggests at least five times and perhaps up to ten full volleys.
- The trap is beautiful. It uses relatively simple technology to accomplish a complex task. The construction seems to be the signature of the workshop of Tutakhan the Trapper, a legendary Citrine trap maker. Very few of her trap designs survive to this day because she and most of her apprentices and workers were killed during the Plague of Madness. This trap is a complete unknown design by her.
Gil finds little evidence of further traps. The kobold carved in mirror on the door seems to be the same as the one on the previous door but is obviously older and he rides a chariot, a sign of his station as a military leader.
As with the previous door, Gil has little problem shouldering it open.
Beyond the door lays a foyer. A faded tapestry hangs on a wooden frame on the western wall. Faded and delicate, the tapestry depict a middle-aged kobold man, accompanied by a woman and two children, with a small estate in the background. To either side of the tapestry are two small pedestal, upon which sit two dead and preserved lizards. Stone double doors exit the chamber to the north and south. There are torch sconces built into each of the four corners of the room.
The roll20 map has been updated. Torches are currently in Bastion and Dorian's hands.
Bastion Augusta Raphiel |
You know that if it is a potion you can use Craft Alchemy to identify them
Bastion nods and even gives a smile at Lilia, " Excellent report Private Aconite. Once we leave we shall ensure the individual gets a proper funeral and service. It is a reminder to us all how dangerous this place can be. Be sure you try and identify the substance inside the vial it could prove helpful" Bastion picked up the torch and moved forward now that the next tier of doors were open.
" Hrm, seems clear but we can never be too sure can we? The walls have sconces however, this shall make my plan easier. It is clearly a Hub of some kind and we can use it as a general meeting place below just in case someone gets lost. You two, Odalis and Taviston, be thorough and then we can move through. If I remember correctly we are not to disturb the non-valuable material. And this kobold... seems to be of respectable position. "
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Gil Odalis |
"Huh? Oh, yeah sure." replies Gil absentmindedly, his attention absorbed once again with mapping.
Once done he moves into the chamber and starts checking around for traps, focusing his search on the two doors and the two pedestals. He didn't really understand the ancient burial practices of days past or what significance the dead salamanders had. That didn't stop him from letting his instincts lead him to the most likely spots for traps.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Bastion Augusta Raphiel |
With a nod Bastion tightens his grip on his claw-bracer and moves around to position the torch in the sconce to his next right so that the room stayed illuminated.
" Now to check both these doors. In general, I have been taught in the Chacedonik Forces to take a distinct method in exploration when it comes to dungeons. It has failed very few times. One takes the path to their right and clear all the way following the wall. It works well for Labyrinths as well. Reduces mishaps though it may take a longer time. " The confident man spouted looking over the door to his North.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Tobias Taviston |
Tobias will also examine the darts for poison before leaving the room.
Taking 10 for a 20. Also Bastion, Lilia did try to identify the vials already she just didn't make the DC. Tobias did but didn't share it with anyone because he assumes Lilia would be able to easily identify Alchemists Fire as well.

The pedestals do not seem to be trapped. Nor do the mummified lizards. Nor do the north doors. Nor the south. No traps at all, it would seem, in this chamber.
Anyone who wishes may do an appraise check on any item at any time.
Tobias Taviston |
Tobias will probably go through the whole tomb and appraise it. But he's waiting before it's been thoroughly detrapped and explored first.

Bastion Augusta Raphiel |
Bastion gave the possible items in this room a looks over in the time it took to inspect the place for traps. Giving a rough estimation with his eye.
Appraise: Tapestry: 1d20 ⇒ 2
Appraise: Mummy Pets: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Once done doing that he tried to guesstimate how delicate the Tapestry was and if it could be safely gathered.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
After which he turned to Both Gil and Dorian and spoke. " It seems this place is secure, Private Quartz prepare to open this door with me, Private Odalis ready to back me up, Privates Aconite and Taviston ready support. Expect the worse, hope for the best. " As Bastion began to open the Northern Door.
JGray |
Together, Dorian and Bastion are able to shove the heavy stone doors open. A short flight of stairs leads down to a second set of doors which, after being checked and found lacking in traps, also open easily enough.
A brightly painted chariot sits in the center of the chamber. Beyond the chamber, a large canvas stretches between two stone columns. The skins of several animal - antelopes, great cats, and crocodile - now faded and deteriorated with age, are tacked to this canvas. A wooden chest, lacquered white and trimmed with gold inlay, sits in the southeast corner. In each corner of the room a small stone shield is molded into the masonry at shoulder height. An open hallway leads to the east.
Map has been updated.
Tobias Taviston |
Tobias will proceed to the nearest shield moulding to examine it as a way to hide anymore darts or other traps, watching the floor as he goes.

Bastion Augusta Raphiel |
Basion huffed as he was glad that there was another individual to push the door open. After regaining his composure he looks into the room then steps in holding his blade-guard tight seeing another hallway and room to his right inspecting it as well. " I'll check this room, Private Dorian, Private Taviston , Private Aconite inspect the valuables. Private Odalis once the previous room is secure join me inside this room. Of curse we should always keep our eyes peeled for traps. "
Perception (Chariot Room): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Lilia Aconite |
Lilia nods and examines the hides on the canvas, checking if any of the skins are from Magical or Rare/Extinct creatures
taking 10 on appraise and Knowledge(Nature)
" I would prefer it, if someone checked the chariot and the chest for traps, before I take a look at them"
Bastion Augusta Raphiel |
Bastion nodded, " That is why I listed Private Taviston's name before yours Private Aconite. I would assume you handled the more.. natural cases while he uses his 'knowledge' on the textbook cases.. such as traps. Your wariness is noted and appreciated however. " Bastion gave an approving smile as he drew his teacher's sword now that his hand wasnt taken up by the torch he left in the other room.
" Private Quartz, make sure you provide enough light for the rest of the Unit to search accurately. One must be careful here. "
JGray |
To be clear, Bastion, are you leaving the chariot room and moving east? Or are simply looking down the hallway to the east while standing in the chariot room?
JGray |
Shadows dance on the walls and floor of the hallway as Bastion peers down it. The hallway seems empty. There are four gold masks hanging on the south wall, two larger (on either end) and two smaller. The room beyond the hallway is difficult to see as it is cast in shadows because the torch is so far from it. There are items inside, however. Large items that could be furniture or containers of some sort.
Tobias Taviston |
"Humm. I can't tell if these shields reliefs are part of a trap or not."
Can Tobias take 20 on inspecting these reliefs? If so he will do so for a 26.

Dorian Quartz |
Dorian keeps wondering why he's called "Private Quartz", it's not like he's in the military or anything.
Still, Bastion seems to know what he's doing.
Remember, I can't access roll20 from work during the day.
Dorian will move along with Bastion and will stand at his side.
Lilia Aconite |
Lilia moves into position
"the skins don't seem to be worth much contrary to the tapestry in the last room, unless we find someone realy desperate to get any kind of White Crocodile skin"
Gil Odalis |
"One man's trash..." says Gil as he passes Lilia to follow Bastion. He chuckles at his own joke, the saying was common among members of the Breaker's Guild.
As he passed the masks in the hallway the hair on the back of his neck stands up. He tries to avoid looking at them but decides against it, instead searching the frozen faces for the source of his unease.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

Gil's Knowledge/Local check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Bastion and Dorian walk through the hallway and into the room at the end. It is 20 feet by 20 feet - of a size equal to with the other chambers in the tomb thus far. A table displaying a three-dimensional diorama occupies much of the north side of this room. Three shields with different designs are displayed upon a rack against the east wall, while various weapons hang from another rack among the south wall. Arrayed around the room are five small chests and a clay urn.
There is no time for further inspection, however. Three of the miniature warriors on the diorama begin moving as you step into the room. They appear to be samurai from the Jade Kingdom and are armed with tiny metal swords. The three warrior dolls leap off the table... and charge.
Initiative rolls
Bastion's Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Dorian's Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Gil's Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Lilia's Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Tobias' Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Warrior Dolls' Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
BEGIN COMBAT. ROUND ONE
Red dot warrior doll leaps off the table and zig zag moves. It attacks Bastion.
Red dot warrior doll attack on Bastion 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Red dot warrior doll crit confirm: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Red dot warrior doll damage on Bastion: 1d3 ⇒ 2
Red dot warrior doll attack on Bastion 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Red dot warrior doll hits once for 2 points of damage, dropping Bastion's HP to 11.
Blue dot warrior doll leaps off the table and attacks Bastion.
Blue dot warrior doll attack on Bastion 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Blue dot warrior doll attack on Bastion 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Green dot warrior doll leaps off the table and attack Dorian.
Green dot warrior doll attack on Dorian 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Green dot warrior doll attack on Dorian 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Dorian, you have the option of parrying/riposting if you so desire.
The warrior dolls leap off the table and rush to attack, swinging their little swords with disturbing speed. Only one attack hits, however, the metal of the doll's blade biting hard into Bastion's ankle.
Map has been updated. I adjusted it so the map grid works with the program grid. Init is up at the top of the thread under campaign info.
Dorian Quartz |
Dorian, with panache, will attempt to parry the second attack.
parry: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Since the parry is successful, he will attempt a riposte.
attack and damage: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 251d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
attempt to confirm critical: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 5 + 1 = 19
If that confirms, then added critical damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3, and he gets his point of panache back.
"Ha Ha! Take that!"
Then, on his turn, if there is a space to be that will give Bastion flanking, then Dorian will attempt to move there. Acrobatics check vs. warrior doll CMD. If he fails, then the doll gets an attack of opportunity: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Then, Dorian will make his attack on it (this assumes flanking). attack and damage: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 5 + 2 = 201d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
"And that!"
JGray |
Dorian moves with style, showing the agility of a dancer as he thrusts the little blade aside and then uses the flat of his blade to smash the little warrior doll into bits.
Dorian destroys the green dot warrior doll.
The warrior dolls get to do both their attacks in addition to a move action. That's why they all attacked twice. With their whole +3 attack and 1d3 damage.
I can't resolve Dorian's attack action until I see Lilia's. Dorian's plan is to tumble to the other side of the red dot warrior and attack it, though.
Tobias Taviston |
Critical damage is a bit off there Dorian. Should be 2d6+2.

Ah Okay I see it now. I didn't notice you wrapped your initial attack and damage rolls into the same line.
Also I'll go ahead and knowledge check these for when Tobias' turn comes around.

Round 1
Absorbed as he is with the masks, Gil barely notices when the other two come under attack by some of the tombs residents. When his mind finally does return to him the fight is already well underway. Trying to catch up Gil draws his hammer and moves next to the nearest of the strange dolls.
Gil: Move Action to draw Earth Breaker
Gil: 5-foot step to adjacency with Blue Dot Warrior Doll. Assumes that Dorian leaves his square.
Gil: Standard Action attack vs Blue Dot Warrior Doll, Non-Action to activate Power Attack
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Damage: 2d6 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 5) + 6 + 3 = 17
Gil delivers his second blow of the day, his Earth Breaker living up to its namesake as the stone floor cracks under the impact.
