First! lol.
So when I came up with this character concept I was trying to make something that felt like a Shaman. I haven't played a Warlock before, so I'm not sure what it will feel like. (Although it might feel similar to a Pathfinder Fire Elemental Sorcerer I played a long time ago who was possessed by some Fire Elemental demon.)

Descriptively, 5e gives a lot of room for character concepts. I think you chose well with a Warlock to emulate your shaman concept. Since the idea of a patron and their relationship with you is deliberately vague, I really see the concept that your patron is your spiritual guide.
What's interesting about Roakkard is just how far he's traveled from his lands and how strange his patron is! I love it.
Mechanically warlocks are more akin to sorcerers only they are more specialized and provide consistent abilities. Your bag of tricks is smaller, but you're far more likely to never run out during a typical adventuring day. Your fey patron has some natural and shamanistic elements mechanically. I'm interested to know what ideas you have for your level 3 pact!

Exactly my opinion. My sister asked me what the main difference is between 3.5e and 5e. (We hated 4e with a vengeance.) I told her I was rather surprised how flexible 5e is compared to its predecessors and how, (possibly as a result), it is more focused on story (story-telling?) than on creating and playing optimized characters.
Characters have flaws, bonds, and connections in 5e. They're not all superheroes who are blind to their environment.

Hi everyone! I'm in a car until late tonight, but I'll get a game play post in when i am back. I've not played 5e yet, so I'm looking forward to this.

I've done a 10min Background as my preferred method of fleshing things out. Gonna spoiler it based on who would know what IC (I'm fine with you looking at it OOC)
The Ten-Minute Background: Tybalt Tanlasel
Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, and a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind. 5 is just a minimum...more elements are encouraged!
2) Though he moves with the grace of a true elf, Tybalt has a slight hunch to lower his center of gravity and protect his neck. He rarely relaxes.
3) Tybalt takes what he wants if he suspects his hands to be faster than a mark’s eyes, but neither is he greedy. He wouldn’t know what to do with a large sum of money.
4) Aside from his quickness, Tybalt has survived on his ability to understand people, even if he doesn’t understand how to favorably interact with them. He can tell if someone is all bluster, or truly dangerous.
5) Some smiles show cheer, Tybalt’s show only teeth.
6) Tybalt loves the rain. The streets are empty as everyone waits inside, and the city belongs to him.
Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.
2) Tybalt should at some point be forced to think about his future beyond accomplishing his primary goal.
Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of, so expect some surprises!
2) The Shoanti woman Shara is not Tybalt’s mother by blood.
Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.
2) Ratpaw is an escaped Lost Lamm. Tybalt accidentally got him an apprenticeship at an alchemist’s shop, now the boy owes him favors.
3) Charrush is a Hawk Clan leader that cast Tybalt out after his mother died. He does not believe the elf has any Shoanti blood, and is concerned that Shara was playing some dangerous game by claiming Tybalt as his son. Charrush reads birds flocking to Tybalt as signs that he is a usurper, and does not want him anywhere near his people.
Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.
2) Tybalt prefers sweet and bitter foods, he does not like sour foods as they remind him of the garbage he sometimes had to subsist on.
3) Tybalt’s loyalty is difficult to earn, but he would do anything to protect his friends.
Roakkard Red-Feather |
Juliet's *observation* that Shoanti were illiterate made me examine my languages again, lol. And while I was doing so, I noticed almost all of my skills are based on Intelligence. I realized that was my dump ability score, so I've modified my racial bonus to Intelligence and Charisma from Strength and Charisma.
It just doesn't feel right for someone who has spent a lot of time in libraries and studying various lores to have an Intelligence of 8.
As far as I am aware, this change does not affect any other statistics.
Juliet D'Artangen |
The warlock seems to be a really interesting class. You're going to be doing a lot of melee, correct? Or even be a pretty good switch hitter? The class seems to be designed to fill this role, but then you have to dump the mental stats, excepting charisma, of course. But this contradicts the whole keeper of mystical knowledge vibe / blessed with dark knowledge vibe that I also get from the class.
I suppose your int score is just the nature of the assigned array way of character generation, and I think could be explained that even though Roakkard has spent a lot of time delving into libraries, and is a lore-keeper for his tribe, he's not had a formal education of the type that vaguely-racist Juliet would see as necessary for an academic.
At any rate, I'm looking forward to Juliet realizing that Roakkard's a pretty learned dude. She probably needs to have some assumptions exploded :)

It looks like a really fun class. Lots of options and builds possible. I think the next 5e character I play will be one, once I get the handle on everything.
Two questions for everyone:
1) We're pretty melee heavy. I could multi-class bard, to give us a little more support, if everyone thinks that would be a good idea.
2) My passive insight and perception scores are pretty low. For those of you that have played this game, how big a deal is this?
Petty Alchemy RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16 |
1) Tybalt will prefer sniping with his shortbow and throwing daggers, 5e has made this a viable tactic for rogues. Especially once we hit level 2 and I get Cunning Action so I can use my bonus action to Hide, using hit-and-run tactics without missing an attack turn.
Likewise Roakkard is set with Eldritch Blast, and both you and Jian can also use ranged weapons just fine with your strong Dex stats.
I'd be more concerned about heavy lifting.
2) Means pretty much what you'd expect. You're easier to fool and sneak past. Once we all party up, it's not too big of a deal, since whoever does notice tricks can alert everyone else.
Olondir |
I'm working on your secret. I'm thinking something to do with your inheritance and your desire for it. So it was leaked to you that you are entitled to this small fortune, perhaps by Gaedren. You're so certain it's there. It likely is but someone was using that promise of inheritance to get rid of one of your siblings...but why? And who? I'll think about it some more and get back to you.
Juliet D'Artangen |
I'm trying out "stepping" dialogue allowing for further interactions and interjections without slowing down the game too much.
Let me know what you all think.
It is a pretty interesting idea. I say keep doing it, and we'll see if it gets too confusing!

Ultimately your call Olondir but I took the liberty in my stats to take Korvosa as a trained skill with the intention that despite being an immigrant he has basically lived in Korvosa the same amount of time as most "young adventurers" would have were they start. (20 yrs) I figured that plus the profession would explain a familiarity with the city while still being "of" somewhere else but if you think that ultimately not being born and bred of the city is the difference I can take it off.

You're in the right, dude. You definitely should have it.

How's everyone doing?
I'm enjoying this so far. You guys are shaping up to be a great bunch and I adore how inquisitive we are!
I gotta be honest though, not being able to read everyone's faces and measure engagement makes me feel a little insecure. Am I describing enough? Posting too slow for your likes? Too fast? Too inconsistent?
Obviously we just started and it's too early for a lot, but anything I can do to make the game more fun and engaging?
Thanks!

I've been lurking, and I think you are doing great! Almost makes me wish we could have a face-to-face game with this one, all of us! ^_^ If that were the case, I would so be there!

Remind me, why aren't you playing Aeshuura?
At the mention of shopping, I think I've just got the 10gp from my background available. Once we come into some funds, I'd want to buy the kits I'm proficient with and lack (forgery, disguise), and a hand crossbow (unless we get into more open conflict, in which case concealment matters little and I'd go for a longbow).

1. I'm doing good. I am playing a quiet/reserved character although I could include more interior dialogue to beef up my posts, otherwise that is the only reason I am not posting -more- but I am enjoying the group/dynamic and the frequency is good.
2. I am with PA a far as wondering why Aeshuura isn't playing in so much that 5 vs 4 doesn't seem too disruptive from my experiences and almost preferable in PbP because its another poster keeping the thread moving. YMMV
Aeshuura |
Thanks, guys. The original reason I had come on the boards was to get a taste of Adventurer's League. When that thread looked dead, I found this one. Well, the DM cast Thread raise dead, and I can't handle more than one online game at a time. (Just don't have the time for it, and wouldn't want to hold anyone up!) DM Olondir is right though, at the time, it looked like we had a plethora of submissions, and since I have been through this AP before (albeit, with PF) I felt that I would rather give all of you a chance at what I believe will be an awesome adventure, if not a full-blown campaign!
I love the whole 3 Musketeers-style feel that is going on, and it just tickles me that this one is going so well!
Juliet D'Artangen |
Sorry you won't be joining us, Aeshuura - I was looking forward to seeing what your not-evil priest of Norgorber was like.
Olondir, I think you're doing a very good job - thank you for running this! I'm happy with the pace and the description.
Tybalt, I'm happy to wait. Juliet might have a wisdom of 8, but I, Chicken, would rather not just kick the door in.
Aeshuura |
Heh, the neat thing about the character is that he could be brought in at any time! It is his job to KNOW! ;)

On Friday morning, I must travel back to 1944 and do battle with the Germans in central Pennsylvania.
I'm participating as a US soldier in a reenactment of the "Battle of the Bulge" and will be without my computer.
At night, I might be able to sneak a look at the thread, my PMs and email. I don't think I can't commit to posting during the time I'm gone.
I'll be back either late Saturday or early Sunday ready to proceed!

Hey guys, I'd like to check in and see if I'm playing Tybalt's jerkiness right, meaning it's not frustrating you OOC. I usually play more friendly characters, so this is fairly new to me.
He's starting to go into lecturing mode which can be condescending. I've been annoyed by similar actions before. If it bothers you as a player, please let me know and I'll rein it in. No need to respond in public, you can PM me about it.
Juliet D'Artangen |
No worries on my part, petty alchemy!
Roakkard Red-Feather |
Uh Oh, are we posting annoying posts already? lol. I haven't read the game board yet, but be assured that if you're being annoying, my character will either respond violently or arrogantly ignore you. :P

I'm driving all day today. Can get a post up tonight.

No worries, it seems that weekends are harder for people to post on... ^_^

For ease, I have made a link to the map of the church on my profile. Just under the link. The two guys in the chapel area are the Father and his acolyte. The girl is the other person... The blocked off area is unseen areas that will be cleared as you explore.

Miss Jules, yes, Insight is Sense Motive and it can be used actively. Investigation is more like the old 3.5 Search.

Many thanks, Aeshurra! As I intend Juliet to be a face, it is probably best to have an insight rather than investigation - thanks for clearing that up.
Also, thanks for posting this weekend.

Alas, the swingy nature of level 1 fights! Hopefully Tybalt will be able to redeem his absence and Juliet pulls through. He's not likely to leave her side after hearing about this.
I've read that early levels are really deadly in 5e. I think this first fight is certainly shaping up to be!
I'm back on the road soon - will check in tonight. As stated, feel free to roll Juliet's saves if she's holding things up, Olondir.
Cheers!

This is my first time starting 5e at level 1. Previously my group tried the system at 5, another PbP I'm in is at 3, and my next game with my main group is starting at 4. It's been a while since I played 4e, but I think HP was higher at first level there.
