Edric stands there agape as Magna flees from their conversation. What happened?

This will be further addressed once Vosil responds on 25 Sarenrith

Edric spends much time over the next few days trying to find Magna, once he does so he makes a point of spending time near her, just doing tasks that happen to be nearby. After a couple of days, when she stops trying to actively avoid him he approaches, cautiously, with hands empty and in view.

"Magna, I just wanted to apologise for how our conversation ended. I had no intention of upsetting you and I'm very sorry that I did." Pausing for a moment Edric waits for a reaction, not receiving one he goes on. "I meant what I said. I've no feelings for Taalia. I respect her as a companion and a clever person but I do not love her and I absolutely do not prefer her to you."

"Vosil. Forgive me but do you like Taalia? You two always seems to be so close..." Edric starts lookng uncomfortable but plows on anyway. "How do you.. know when a woman likes you...?"

Vosil - somehow - manages to set his goblet of wine carefully to one side without spilling it in reply to Edric's question.

He quickly considers what to say. The first liaison he had which might properly have been termed a 'romance' was with a paladin; it ended badly, and left him with a broken heart - and a broken arm (his heart took longer to heal: the spell 'Cure Lovesick Adolescent' is not on any cleric's list - proof, if it were needed, that the Gods are not all-powerful). But he has learned from his experiences, and has formulated a number of rules for dealing with paladins. The first rule is: Do not talk to them about personal stuff. (The second rule is like unto the first, but with more emphasis: DO NOT talk to them about PERSONAL STUFF!)

A shame, then, that he is just no good at following rules (hence the aforementioned broken arm). He sighs.

"There's a Varisian saying: 'Lucky at cards; unlucky in love' - it's supposed to be a consolation for the loser, something for them to say to the person walking away with the winnings."

A wry grin. "Based on my own experience, I've come up with a variation on that: 'Unlucky at cards AND love, lucky in combat.' In truth, my...career to date has precluded anything beyond the occasional tryst - constant travel and ever-changing companions don't make for lasting relationships!"

Deep in thought, he runs a thumb and forefinger along his mustache and beard. "But really, you are a paladin: if someone has caught your eye, why not be honest and tell her? What's the worst that could happen?"

I know, I know - but there's a reason Vosil isn't a relationship counsellor...

Talia tilts her head slightly to the side, peering intently at her companion of the last many weeks. The Viscountess knew a few things; Dregan was more comfortable in the wild than in a town; he loved his family very much; he was a crack shot and an expert woodsman. But less so than all of her companions, Talia didn't understand Dregan. He seemed to have no ambition, no desire to better his circumstances, beyond what he already possessed.

But of course this assessment must be wrong. That simply doesn't make sense.

"You're mistaken about just being a hunter and a farmer. I have every intention to follow through with my words - you will be given a title in thanks for everything you've done. And that title comes with land. Land for your family to farm, land for you to hunt on."

"I'm also afraid that I can't ask you to leave us. Dregan, this new realm of Fairhaven, it is still wild. Our immigrants will need patrols to keep the paths to Concord safe. There is no one of our charter that is more suited to this task. Fairhaven will need a Marshall to patrol the wilds, explore the rest of our charter, and keep our farmers and rural folk safe from the depredations of those like the Stag Lord."

"I implore you, go home and see your family. And then help them pack their belongings for their move to Concord. I'll have your land waiting for you and your family's return, Lord Marshall Hirsherz."

Talia stands, stunned, as Magna kneels, knowing full well how difficult it must be for the headstrong shieldmaiden to do so.

"You have no need to beg - ever - friend Magnitofera. Please stand, we have much to discuss."

Taking Magna's arm in her own, Talia walks with the shieldmaiden up the stairs to Castle Ulfogstrahd's walls, leading her friend along the parapet. "I know that you've walked these walls many times this past month, Magnitofera. I've seen it. And for good reason. It is a fine castle, but it is no dwarven fortress! I suspect it never will be so impregnable, but with your help, this could be a realm no one dare invade!"

" Fairhaven needs you. So let me beg you now. Look out across these crenelations, at the town that stretches out below us. At some point, someone will try to take it from us. You are truly the most fearsome warrior I have ever seen, Magna. If you'll be Fairhaven's Lord General, they'll not be successful, I know it!"

"The Lord General would, in addition to leading our military ventures in matters of offence and defense, also advise me on all things related to our defensive infrastructure. I'm afraid I know little of the construction of castles and forts, as well as how they are best located, and how soldiers are deployed to them and within them."

"There is another thing. Within the year, we'll be able to secure the gold mine that we discovered all those months ago. We may have disagreed about it then, but I think we can both agree that we need dwarves to work it, for your people can talk the earth into giving up its secrets easier than any other. I'd like your help securing the migration of your people to Fairhaven."

"What do you say, Lord General Skeller? Will you serve at my side to protect Fairhaven's people?"

The truth was, Talia never cared much for Erastil. He was a little too parochial, a little too conservative, a little too unsophisticated. But there was no doubt that he was a beloved god, and one that many of Fairhaven's people worshiped first and foremost.

"Archerfest it is. I presume you have plans for how to celebrate our first holiday, Lady Asha?"

Vosil is already predisposed to support Asha's request, even before he hears it: her friendly welcome and smile when he first arrived at Oleg's was the first he'd had in a long while. Some things stay with you.

He surreptitiously shuffles a few papers. One of Kaalib's clerks has seen the benefit of having another friend on the Council and ensures that he, Vosil, is supplied with regular, accurate copies of the exchequer accounts; in addition, Vosil has been in contact with a factor he knows from Absalom, who owes him a favour from time past and who has extended them a line of credit at very favourable rates. As a result, he has a good idea of what their little province can afford.

Just RPing the move from putting his bonus from Stability into Economy.

He clears his throat. "Subject to our Treasurer's agreement, it appears that if we put our efforts this month into cultivating the nearby valley of fangberries, that would provide enough to be self-sustaining and give a surplus allowing for this festival to go ahead."

He smiles at Asha. "I think you just got your festival. I second our ruler's question: what is your plan?"

Edric grins. "We make quite the pair don't we..." His grin fades quickly however into a thoughtful look. "You misunderstand me friend. It's not that I have an eye on a girl but that I was trying to help someone and they accused me of liking another woman, ran off and has barely spoken a word to me since... I just don't understand it... I apologised and everything. I was hoping you'd be able to explain a little."

Just for a moment Edric looks surprisingly young as his confusion shows clearly on his face. "You see I don't have any experience with women at all, not beyond one night shortly after I escaped. I just thought..." He throws his hands up in the air. "I don't know. I just thought that it wouldn't be this hard. I can fight and I can host demons, that's all I'm good for. You, Kaalib, Taalia, you're all so involved and capable. You're building a city for Desna's sake! I can't even figure out how to help my friends" He falls silent, staring into the dying embers of the fire, light glittering on all sides from the sand.

We'll need to make sure they're included going forward. And if we're lucky, many of Torag's fine folk will someday soon grace our realm. It would be an insult to not welcome their beliefs. Of course there's Abadar..."

"Then, you've got to celebrate the day we defeated the Stag Lord and cleansed the bandit menace. I know I vowed to wipe the man from the histories, but looking back, why should I deny others their moments of immortality? His defeat is much more about us anyways. And there's our Founder's Day, which could be the day we came to our compact, or the day we laid the first new stone at Concord. And if it is the latter, we should celebrate the founding of Concord anyways."

"Harvest festivals, and the end of winter - those are important. We need something in the dead of winter, too - that's a dreadful time of year. A token holiday to celebrate our rich shared heritage with Brevoy wouldn't be a bad idea, either. It would further bonds with that nation to our northern border. But we should celebrate our rich cultural diversity too - some sort of "friendship day."

Running a quick tally in her mind, Talia smiles. "That's by my count at least twelve festivals that we need!"

"Uh, I don't believe anyone here has said we have the resources for that - at least not yet. I admire your ambition, but let's not grant more than has actually been requested, hm? It sets a bad precedent."

Talia stares at Dregan for a good minute before answering, as she tries to figure out whether or not the man is kidding. On one hand, only a madman would turn down a noble title. On the other hand, Dregan was no madman. He was also very sincere. He must really believe that his son would be better off not being a noble!

It dawns on Talia that she's been exhaling one long, slow sigh. "Dregan, you can turn down the title, and we'll make sure you have the land you need for your family... but I'd caution you to accept the lordship. Like it or not, as the progeny of one of our charter-holders, your son is important. A title will afford him the opportunity to grow into his role as he ages."

"And you as well. You'll be leading men and women soon. It is a sad affair in some ways that the world works as it does, but a title will make your authority easier to come by."

"In the end though, it is up to you."

Talia nods, seeing the wisdom in Vosil and Kaalib's council - though she won't pretend to like it. Crossing her arms, she stares across the table. "Perhaps you are correct. If the Desnans get upset, as a practitioner of their faith, you can council them as you did me."

"We'll revisit the issue in the fall."

"Alas, Lady; I have been getting lazy and soft on indoor life - I have heard nothing of these rumours. Rather a failing, in a spymaster. Your pardon."

Talia stands, stunned, as the dwarf breaks down in her arms, a slight frown on her face. Boys. This is about boys?

Letting go of Magna, the countess sits on one of the castle wall's crenelations, slowly rolling up her shortsleeve. "You know," she says, bearing her pale, freckled arm to Magna, "us gingers burn horribly in the sun. It is why I'm always covered when I'm outside. You, on the other hand, take to the outdoors like a deer or a hare, Magna. I'm quite envious. And I'm tall, yes, but not curvy like you. My figure is - frankly - too thin for most. I'm jealous of the way your body moves with you - mine is too rigid, as if it is always apart from comfort, if that makes sense?"

"The point being, of course, that you're quite beautiful in ways that I wish I was. But that's always the way it is, isn't it? The next hill is bound to be larger, more green, filled with more gold. Even if you're standing on a gold mine."

Brow furrowing, Talia pauses for a second, hesitation showing on her face. Edric had never given Talia any indication that he was interested in her. "Why do you say that, about Edric? He has never given me any signs. Besides, the earnest devout holy warrior... that's not really my type. Nothing against Edric of course - he is quite handsome, and he's kind as the summer day is long. Perhaps you should tell him you have these feelings? I waited a long time to do so with Gavriil, until it was too late, I'm afraid. Don't make my mistake, Magnitofera!"

The playwright holds her hands in front of herself, twisting them nervously. She had no answer for Magna's last question, though she was glad it was not the case.

Howls-in-the-Hills is a cunning hunter. Full of tricks and surprises, he has stalked these lands for a generation. So with a snarl and a howl, the pack breaks upon you from the west, where he played the echoes against you.

Two worgs are on Edric in a flash, fangs flashing in the firelight. Their bite draws blood, and the paladin is overborne by their rush. -12 hp, Edric, you are prone.

The rest of the pack attacks, one worg for each of you. Only Magna's skill at teamwork saves you, keeping you from being totally surprised.

These worgs are dynamite!

The worgs come on in a rush, and the party goes down under their savage attack. Only Talia manages to duck under her assailant and remain standing. She looks up to see the silhouette of a huge worg lined against the night sky, staring down into the dell.

NOTE: Everyone is hit and prone except Talia. Please note the damage you took, I rolled it above. You may take AoOs as they trip you, based on the Lookout Feat (you can act in the surprise round). Then you are up for ROUND ONE.

Surprise round

Even caught at half-guard, Vosil is still alert, his whip flashing towards the threat as he becomes aware of it.

Trip attack as AoO, with reach weapon: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26

The worg that springs at him suddenly finds that its limbs are entangled with a length of whip.

If trip attack works, worg is prone and gets -4 to attack, which means it misses Vosil and thus can't trip him.

Naralesh's tactics will depend heavily on the locations people are located on the map. He's planning to shift ten feet back (away from any worgs) to stand up, avoiding AoOs for doing so. If he can hit a bunch of them with glitterdust he might do that, or he might summon an elemental... without a map I'm unsure how many I could get with the glitterdust spell without hitting any allies.

Nearly overwhelmed by the savage assault, Naralesh went down hard as the worg's bite narrowly bypasses his magical armor. The jolt of adrenaline surges through his magic, and he simply vanishes from the canine's jaws and reappears several paces away. If shifting simply 5 feet will get him out of AoO range, he'll go for the shorter distance.

Rising to his feet, he quickly chants a spell, hoping to put something between him and his attackers.

Hard to make these tactical decisions without the visual, haha. If he can hit at least 3 of the worgs with glitterdust (without hitting any allies), he'll do that. If not, small mud elemental it is.

If he summons:
Fort Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 Fatigued.
Slam (Power Attack): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 Fort save DC 12 or be entangled.

If he uses glitterdust:
DC 17 will saves or be blinded.

As the worg's jaws close on Edric's leg, he shortens his grip and brings the earthbreaker down in a crushing blow on the middle of it's back. There is an audible snap as the hammer crashes down.

My action for Round 1 depends on whether I stopped the worg from tripping me or not: if I'm prone, I'll use a dirty trick to blind the worg (standard action) and then stand (move action, no AoO if opponent is blinded). If I'm not prone, I can do a straight attack, with a AoO if I tripped the worg and it tries to get back up.

I actually think, upon looking at the Trip special ability, that the wolves/worgs neither provoke an AoO for using it nor do they get to use it if they miss their attack.

Well, I'm not sure what happened, but I did double-check the to-hit numbers, and I thought I got them all correct. I guess not. Also, Naralesh is correct about the Trip - another mistake by me. You do not get an AoO. <sigh> Let me set the scene as is then:

One of Edric's worg's bites his leg, dragging him down. -6 hp The man's return strike crushes the worg locked on his leg, leaving one more to face. Edric prone, one worg, Round 1 action done.

Vosil goes down under a wall of fur and fangs. -9 hp, prone He just manages to snap his whip across the snout of the beast, gashing it in the eyes. Changed Trip to Dirty Trick, worg blind, Round 1 action over.

Talia ducks her worg, stabbing it. The worg yelps in pain and falls to the ground pawing it's eyes. Round 1 action done, worg blind.

Dregan steps aside, narrowly dodging the worg rush. Dregan can go in Round 1.

Naralesh blinks out of the grip of the worg on him, ending up on the far side of the fire. Seeing no way to cast an area spell without hitting allies in the swirling melee, he summons a trusty elemental, who slams the worg with a muddy fist. mud ele in action. Round 1 action done.

Don't worry about all the numbers at this point. I think I have this back on track. Don't expect a map because the original plan was to not have one. It was supposed to be a simple fight - famous last words...

ROUND ONE: just Dregan goes.

Naralesh retrieves his scroll of shield, and quickly chants its words. "Wyrdim krishath shinari," he calls out. As the words vanish from the vellum scroll, an invisible disc of force materializes near the elf - he can sense its protection, though it cannot be seen.
