Jehova's Arena (Test) (Inactive)

Game Master Jehova

This is the test for a longer term arena campaign, with combatants beginning at level 1 and advancing through combat. Some rules and specifics are still being worked out, so it's not ready for full campaign status yet.

Shhhhhh! No blow avoiding monk here. Nothing to see. Move along. lol

Lol. Riiiiiiiiight. *wink*

Did you see our old friend the monkey monk? You two would have made quite the pair. :D

@ Jehova & Spock:
Spock, when do you expect to have Kirk ready for a fight?
Adn Jehova when do you expect to be able to toss up a rd 3 fight between Rolg and Kirk?

Basically, I'm not interested in seeing poor Ritti get rocked again, so if we're going to have another round of fights before Rolg is ready, I have another idea I'd like to try out instead.

Let me know.

I'm sorry, I can't really tell. The Macho vs Kirk fight is seeing day 9 now :(

If I win that one, I'd need some hours of work, I already started going through options. Is there a reference about how scribing spells under PFS rules work?
And can I direct a flaming sphere into squares I cannot see (like a pit ;P)?

Booooo <-- (click me)

:D

Understandable. I guess, then that I'll work up my other level 2. If Kirk is finished and levelled up before the real arena kicks in, then Rolg will be ready for Kirk.

If not, then people will get to fight m'Shimu.

For what purpose? You get a number of spells for free for leveling up (if you're a magus or wizard). Other than that, you'd need to have the spells in scroll form to scribe them, right?

Or I guess there is the "Independent Research" option, but the gold expenditure seems a bit steep.

What information are you after specifically?

SpoCk0nd0pe wrote:

I don't have a clue. I can see where it says you need to be able to see your target to cast a spell there, but it doesn't mention maintaining a spell. All I can find is about the action required to maintain… not any other restrictions.

Interesting. Jehova?

Also, meet m'Shimu, my new level 2 arena fodder... er... combatant. :)

ny fualt on this one

I need to get these posts out there also i am kind of like kirk there on the color spray thing not sure if it should work or not.

"Ssssssso?" the snake responds, "for the ssssssssake of finisssssshshhing that sssssshhhhit up, go with whatever Jehova ssssssssaid."

Nope, that's not gonna get old at all. :)

There had to be a lot of words starting with the letter "S" in that sentence right? ;P

The cost of adding spells to my spellbook :)

Np, I'm just a little impatient about the outcome...

:P

Ok, seems like there won't be a level 3 fight anytime soon. Kirk just got slammed by Macho!

Woah! Unexpected! Update us when it's fully finished.

Nice, Macho!

I think it is, Kirk is dying...

Here is another link to the fight if you want to see what happened

Yah, i've been following along. I just didn't consider that you wouldn't want/be able to level up while it was on-going.

Plus, I thought you'd take the win. Macho with the upset.

PUT HIM DOWN, MACHO!

: gives thumbs down :

(sorry, Spock, gotta support my fellow martials)

Essentially ending up next to an improved tripping Macho after the failed CDG was the nail in the coffin (plus that failed concentration). Kind of a bad position for a squishy wizard (that's why I'm really thinking whether sleep is worth it in the arena).

Yah, that full round casting thing is painful. Plus two races being straight up immune makes it tricky selecting spells.

The biggest problem with sleep is the wake up thing and immunity to further incapacitation (via color spray).

The wake up thing only comes into play when the Sleep victim has a teammate in some form, right?

And do you mean Sleep (beign unconscious) making the person immune to Color Spray?

Yes, or when I fail to kill with GDC :)

I think I would have had better chances vs Macho if I did not go with sleep and just cast color spray. I could have kept my distance for at least 2 castings.

Oof... yah, that's painful.

"Sssssssssssucks to be you."

I think I'll start working on a Samsaran Kirk for the real arena, mystic past life is just way too broken to pass up. I just can't decide whether summoner or bard has the better early entries :)

Sssssomeone's enjoying their S's, aren't they.

:P

"Ssssssseriously."

Sheesh. Yep, that's pretty nice.

EDIT: so is summoner our most represented class in here? With dwarf being the most represented race?

So, of that last round of fights, the results:

Ritti vs. Eko - Eko wins (BOOOOOO)
Syken vs. Shova - Shova is a no-show(va)
Aurum vs. Arak - Aurum cuts Arak down
Bruno vs. Kirk - Kirk Color Sprays > Triple CDG's Bruno down
Kailin vs. Galen - still going (both sides bloodied)

Eben TheQuiet wrote:

Dwarves do seem the most prolific race. I didn't think we actually had many summoners though. Kailin and Inen are the only two I can think of?

Also, it actually feels like we've had a few monks. At least Aurum and Charan(?). I actually have a character who's not seen play yet, but is also a Monk.

Scarab Sages

I had a 5th lvl witch that didn't do so well due to some lucky rolls, but classes with companions do seem to be favored. Probably because of the increased action economy.

I like having so many dwarves around. It will make casting slow much more fun! :)

Let's see... Off the top of my head I can think of:

1 Barbarian (maybe 2-ish?)
1 Bard
1 Druid? Or Ranger?
1 or 2 Fighters?
2 Monks
1 Rogue, I think
1 Wizard
2 Alchemists (both by me, unless I'm missing someone else's)
1 Cavalier (I think?)
1 Inquisitor (I think?)
2 Summoners
1 Witch

Along with at least 1 Magus and 1 Oracle, who are now out for being outsiders.

Mind, this is all taken from earlier fighters, level 5 ones, etc., and only the ones I strongly suspect I know. Ones that I'd need to highly speculate on aren't included (aside from the guessing included above).

Wow... that is way more diversified than I realized. So Ritti ran up against both summoners as her two fights? Awesome.

I'll add a snake-man to the mix, then. :D

Wait, is Eko a summoner? I was thinking Kailin and Inen when I said 2. Couldn't tell what Eko was.

Well, i actually don't know. That's my guess. She dropped a few hints, though I'm not sure if they were intentional or not.

So make of that what you will.

Well to be fair, the only thing on that list I know as a certainty are my own, the rest is all guesswork on my part.

Just did a search on Samsaran mystic past life. To be honest, as much as I would like to cast summon moster VII at level 9, I have to be fair about what I found (he's the one inventing mystic past life):

While we're on the subject of the Samsaran alternate racial ability, is there anything stopping them from taking a spell that is already on their spell list but is present on another's spell list at lower level? (Say a wizard with haste at lvl 3 takes the lvl 2 version of it from the summoner.) The wording of the ability doesn't seem to forbid it, but a lot of people seem to have a problem with it.

Cheers,

This is a perfectly legal option. A samsaran wizard could indeed take the bard's 3rd level version of confusion as a spell. He'd get it at a lower level, but he'd also get the lower save DC associated with it being a lower level.

It's interesting you mention the summoner, though—in that case I would NOT allow it. The summoner's spell list is FAR too permissive in a lot of cases there regarding what spells it gets at lower levels, such as haste or teleport. In my games, of course, this problem is solved by the fact that I don't allow summoners in my game.

I think by far the most telling thing about this post is that JJ doesn't allow the summoner in his games. Now, granted, he doesn't say why, but that just allows me to assign my own reasoning to it and act like it's legit. :D

Sure, this is no proof that mystic pastlife is broken. But I honestly think it is. I just wanted you to be aware that the inventor of that ability thinks so too before trying to min/max the hell out of it ;)

It's all allowed, bwahahaha.

I think we could argue about what it takes for something to earn the label "broken" (heck, i think most people have different definitions of broken altogether), but I think it's fairly obvious that it gives a class that is generally agreed as the most powerful and flexible on the game and gives them access to even more class resources.

But JJ's point about saves being lower is a good one, if slightly not the point.

I think only a level 10 test battle will show :)

Funny, I don't find Mystic Past Life to be all that broken (then again, I think of it mostly for getting things that aren't on your spell list, not for getting spells at a lower level).

But, considering you're getting, at most, 5 specific spells from other lists, you're either getting low level ones where they aren't a huge difference, or high level ones, where you're still waiting a fairly long while before you get access to them.

In the case of discounted ones, it's nice, I admit, but such as your SMVIII example, at earliest you'll be picking that up at level 11 as a wizard, and getting a CR 11 critter, which is still subject to the usual Dismissal or Protection from X, and the spell is still a 1 round casting time. And, while I haven't really looked, I can't think of anything that's a larger change in level than that one.

Before we start another round I need a few hours to add equipment if that is ok.

Also, how much of each others battles have we been able to see/know about in game?

Hey, Kailin takes the win in the clutch!

What's Kailin's record now?

Um... wow, his record is longer than I realized. Updated his match history on profile. Three wins, two losses.

We do lose VP after a loss, yes? And we're trading in 2's at the moment, and need 6 to level? If so, he should be at 4 now.

That sounds accurate for Kailin's record. I also believe we're done with this round of matches. Anyone who hasn't done so, please update me with your gear changes. I probably shouldn't have thrown Shova in quite yet (he mentioned he'd be busy) but since it wont hurt his VP or Budget, we'll carry on. Can I also have a sound off from currently available people to prevent further no-shows?

m'Shimu (Lvl 2)
Rolg (lvl 3)

Scarab Sages

Bruno (2vp after most recent loss, lvl2)

I'm still slammed at work so I'll sit out this round.

I mentioned it in Syken/Shova's thread, but I'm fine with leaving Syken in that battle until it's resolved.

Kailin is ready for another fight, and 1 win away from a level up if he doesn't fail. Then he can go get smashed up by Rolg again :P

As I said, Syken can be ready or not.
