Okidoke, in that case append the following changes to my last post: the Angel's statement about Parley simply ends with a period after 'neither of these boys dies' and replace mention of square continuing to bleed out with him stabilizing, and we can be entirely on suspended initiatives without that ticking clock. Carry on!
Muziel Moreau |
Muziel silently cheers Penelope's quick thinking. He peeks quickly to assess their condition. "Well, looks these guys aren't dead . . . yet." Keeping an eye on the angel, Muziel works on disarming and searching the unconscious enemies while the others parley.
Penelope Dorn |
Why are you attacking us? Penelope asks, assuming the answer is just cause we killed people and are the "bad" guys, but is hoping the angel gives something away.
Leedwashere |
The Kuribu swiftly turns to Muziel. "Stop that," it admonishes him, but not before he can get the cloth mask off the figure's face revealing it to be Loran Allomar. "These boys are not to be manhandled while we converse either!" Its eagle-face frowns, showing the first actual expression you've seen from it.
"I attacked you because you attacked them," the Angel explains. "I have been sent to protect them. They have acted rashly, but they have not hurt you." The eagle head swivels to look at Kolaiah. "And while the presence of your comrade here sickens me to the core, my mission is not the extermination of evil. Allow these boys to go home, chastised, and our confrontation may come to an end peacefully."
Muziel Moreau |
"Oh, of course it's the Allomar boys," says Muziel, realizing who they were. He stops his search through their things, for now.
Penelope Dorn |
Awww... You make the poor angel sick, Kolaiah. Penelope mocks the flying thing. You can have one of your boys, just one. The other will be insurance you don't come back. Deal?
Penelope Dorn |
It's a very valid question my friend poses, angle. They were doing something here, not so good it seems. The insurance part is to make sure it doesn't happen again tonight. We just let you go, what's to keep you from returning with more of your "boys"
Leedwashere |
"I do not know what their intentions were here tonight," says the Angel. "I am merely looking out for their safety, and am not a part of their councils. If they were indeed 'skulking,' as you put it, then they were not good at it and no doubt the thrashing they received at your hands will be sufficient to dissuade them from further attempts at it. In any event, however, I cannot just simply leave either of these boys here with you alone. You've already shown an alarming tendency to attack first and ask questions later, and I absolutely cannot trust the one with the scythe no matter what any of the rest of you say. I can, however, attempt to prevent them from attempting this foolishness again, as it would only serve to put them in further jeopardy."
Penelope Dorn |
Penelope looks to the others, sighing Angles don't understand comprise in the least do they? Might be the problem with the heavens. I'm inclined to let it have the two brats... after confiscating their belongings as a fine that is. Anyone else?
Muziel Moreau |
"Wait, so you're like a guardian angel or somethin'?" interjects Muziel as the angel explains its role. "I think you'd better persuade their mommy to keep them at home. Whaddya think happens when ya try to break into a jail?"
But the truth was, Muziel was pretty worried about having to fight the angel. So when Penelope talks about confiscating their belongings instead, Muziel doesn't complain. Instead, he heads over to Cimri and whispers. "Psst, you and me should follow these guys when they go home, see if we can root out some more accomplices."
Penelope Dorn |
Sounds good to me Kolaiah Not caring what the angle's opinion is, Penelope will touch the unmasked one with her magic stick, healing him to wakefulness. Laying her sword at the neck of the unconscious one.
Leedwashere |
Cimri, down on her haunches to listen to Muziel, nods her understanding. "Good plan," she whispers back. "Although, this thing's your size, Greed, you guys sure we can't just take it down and then interrogate the Allomars at out leisure?"
"I already said that I do not know what their intentions were," repeats the Kuribu, although without any sense of frustration. "I do not, however, agree to the terms that you may keep thei-" a look of revulsion comes over the Angel's face mid sentence moments after the wand is applied to Lacall.
"What is this?" the Kuribu demands applying a little tension to its bow again. "Whatever you're doing to that boy stop it, stop it right now!"
Leedwashere |
"I care nothing for your mortal concerns or answers," says the extremely agitated Kuribu. "I am much[/i[] more concerned by why one of them suddenly detects as evil to me. Your parley has been a dastardly trick and I will not continue it any further." With that it looses an arrow and Penelope again. As agitated as it is, its aim isn't great and the arrow misses. Meanwhile the slow nature of the [i]infernal healing in just barely returning Lacall Allomar to a conscious, but staggered, condition.

Lacall heals a second point at the start of his turn from the fast healing. There's a confused and tortured expression on his face from the unholy whispers that are filling his head as a side effect of the magic. Seeing, from the ground, that his brother is still unconscious he does the only thing he can think of and channels energy to heal the living again, returning Loran to consciousness with Penelope's blade at his throat.
Channel Positive: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Cimri, standing pretty much just below the angel, throws another dagger at it from below. "Are all Angels this neurotic?" she asks the others. "At least you know what you're going to get from a Devil." The dagger encounters that shimmering barrier of divine protection that the Angel has, but the throw is true and it passes through it un-deflected. The mundane dagger isn't able to penetrate the outsider's marble-like skin, but there is an audible shattering sound like broken glass as the deflection aura shatters.

Muziel's electric blast hits the Angel full-on, but the energy courses around and off the outsider without seeming to harm it in any way. There is no sign of the protective ward which had deflected Kolaiah's strike at it and possibly broke once Cimri had managed to strike it.
Loran, returning suddenly to consciousness hurt and with a blade at his neck begins to thrash a bit to make himself a more difficult target while grabbing for his holy symbol with the other hand. As threatened as he is, he decides to forego the more powerful healing option for the one that doesn't leave him open to attack and channels positive energy to heal the living.

The prone target is quite easy to hit, and Lacall cries out in pain as Kolaiah's scythe gashes his prone form pretty badly. The Kuribu, in response, shifts his target away from Penelope for the first time and looses an arrow at the anti-paladin instead. The angel, having weathered two attacks imperviously since the resumption of hostilities has regained its composure and its aim proves much better than its last shot at Penelope.

This started about 4 hours into the night following the gatehouse event, so there would not have been opportunity for a full night's rest yet. Penelope also would have definitely had enough time to not be fatigued anymore during the parley, so no worries there.
It also didn't occur to me until Penelope's post mentioned it, but is the +4 after the +5 in Kolaiah's post adding in a bonus against the prone target? Because I was factoring in the penalty to AC when determining the success of attack, which would mean that effect was being double-counted. I'd like to get a confirmation one way or the other before posting an update following Penelope, and may have to retroactively apply some changes.
To avoid this confusion in the future we should probably establish a convention going forward. The way I usually do it in my home games is that for things which adjust a target's AC (such as being prone of having cover or what-have-you) I have my players just continue rolling their normal attacks and I adjust the AC value that I'm looking at accordingly. I find that to be generally easier, but if you folks would rather the opposite way (applying penalties to AC as bonuses to your rolls and vice versa while targeting an unchanged AC value) I'd be fine with that too. What are everyone's preferences?
Leedwashere |
Because that's one of the first core classes required at the Storm Trooper Academy :P
Anyway, rolling back a little and pressing forward...
Kolaiah swings his scythe at Lacall, but despite the young man laying on the ground, he manages to twist away from the strike just enough that the brunt of the impact is taken by the armor.
The Kuribu still changes targets to Kolaiah, since he both detects as evil to the Angel and is the most recent one to do something hostile to one of the Allomar brothers. Using the same rolls as before, 25 to hit and 6 damage.
Penelope then follows up with her own stab downward at Loran. Like his brother, he's not too keen on this whole plan of 'slaughter them first' and firmly in fight-or-flight mode manages to pull off the exact same avoidance move as his twin, but in mirror, narrowly avoiding the downward thrust and taking the brunt of the attack on the armor.
Lacall, at the start of his turn, continues to have the infernal energies that are infusing his body knit together the wounds he still has after two successive channeled energies. He tries to defensively cast a spell from the ground, but the distracting whispers from the Infernal Healing impede his concentration and the spell is wasted with no effect.
Concentration DC 17: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Cimri, seeing that even her best throw with her daggers can't damage the Angel decides to take initiative to go retrieve a bow from inside the jail to bring to Kolaiah. The plan is hampered by the twisting and evasive form of Loran lying in the doorway. Cimri tries to acrobatically maneuver her way through his occupied space, but all the erratic movement proves too difficult for her to time properly and she ends up stopping by the door instead, watching for an opening to get through.

Muziel takes aim and watches for signs of Loran casting a spell, and he doesn't have to wait long. As soon as the prone cleric begins trying to cast defensively, the Gnome sends a blast of electricity towards him. It's a difficult shot, however, and the blast of electricity passes completely by before fizzling out inside the jail's lobby with a crackle and smell of ozone. It's startling, to be sure, but not sufficiently to cause him to lose his concentration. As he finishes his incantation a misty vapor spreads out from his position envoloping most of the combat area, and even part of the jail's interior through the open doorway. Loran then tries to use the cover to stand up, hoping (somewhat vainly) that the fog will protect him while he leaves himself open in the attempt.

How do I read your initiative order thing and know if I am up or not?
Top-to-bottom. I've been cycling it around with every update after people act, so that it always reads from next up to furthest from being up. Usually I post an update with everything up to and including the next enemy's turn, or sometimes Cimri's turn as well. I've been putting the dashes in to keep track of where the rounds tick over to the next one.
Like Cimri, Penelope is undeterred by the concealment from the Obscuring Mist and connects with her sword as Loran tries to stand up. The combination of lethal and non-lethal damage on the way to his feet is, amusingly, enough to knock him right back into unconsciousness.
Kolaiah, meanwhile, is finding the combination of fog and active avoidance is making it difficult to land a solid blow on Lacall. Or perhaps its the unnatural evil radiating from the otherwise good cleric that's confusing his sensibilities? Regardless of the reason, the result is more frustration for the anti-paladin.
Ironically, the mist that Loran conjured to aid his escape has the secondary effect of causing the Kuribu to suddenly find itself without a good view of the battlefield below anymore. Unable to see through the fog, it shoots at the only target that it has: Muziel. Its shot it true, and the small arrow stick into the Gnome's thigh, looking proportionally normal-sized in the similarly small target.

Penelope is completely against unconsciousness at this point and guts the poor boy. Yelling with a throaty laugh This was your choice, angle! she drives the blade through his stomach and then up as hard as she can.
coup de grace, so auto hit and crit, does the 20% miss chance effect it? In case it does, rolling it as well
Sword In Gut = Ouch: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (8, 4) + 2 = 14
1-20 miss: 1d100 ⇒ 38
Leedwashere |
I'm not sure if the miss chance would apply to a CDG, it doesn't seem like it should, but even if it did he was helpless so there wouldn't be anything stopping you from 5' stepping into his space to do it without a miss chance. You rolled high enough on your d100 that the question is largely academic, though :P
Penelope bends down and enacts a permanent solution to keep the unconscious Loran Allomar from continuing to struggle. The unconscious cleric gasps out a last breath from the pressure of her sword through his diaphragm.
Lacall heals another hit point from the fast healing effect, then attempts to stand up with the fog's concealment for protection. There's a deep concern on his face following Penelope's outburst, but he can't see what might have happened.
Kolaiah may take an AOO with a 20% miss chance as Lacall stands up. What he does after that will depend on whether or not the AOO is successful...
Kolaiah |
Even in a total concealment situation, a CDG doesn't have a miss chance, it just requires 2 full round actions. There's no rule about a 20% miss chance, but it can't be as bad as total concealment, so I figure it just works in partial concealment. anyways, smoked one good guy!
My AOO:
Pestilence: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Miss!
Pestilence Damage: 2d4 + 3 ⇒ (4, 3) + 3 = 10 P/S 20/x4
He's a lucky bastard that guy!
Leedwashere |
Sorry for the delay, continuing...
Having managed to get up without incident, and without any clear idea of the state of the rest of the altercation, Lacall puts distance between himself and the jail, clearly attempting to run away. To Kolaiah he disappears into the mist, but Muziel can see him quite clearly once he emerges. The map isn't well-suited for fleeing, so he's sort of in an imaginary space adjacent to the map.
Cimri gives Penelope a bemused look and waggles her sap around. "So what am I even using this for?" she asks, though her tone is more playful than anything. She hooks it back on her belt, then bends down to the body and plucks the masterwork dagger she first threw from the corpse's shoulder.

Electric Blast: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20; Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Muziel then takes the opportunity to duck into cover.
This brings up a rules question: If I stand at the edge of an Obscuring Mist, can I see out of it? Can the angel see into it? I'm hoping only Muziel gets to see, in which case I moved him where he wants to be. If the angel can still see Muziel, he will take an additional step into the mist.
Leedwashere |
The way I've always handled interactions like these is that these things affect everyone the same way. So if you're 5' into the mist, then everything outside has a 20% miss chance on you, and the same applies in reverse. So being at the outer edge would allow you to still see outside and be seen from the outside, though still with that partial obscurement interfering with things like attacks. Anything further in you can't see anything outside and nothing outside can see you. To extrapolate this to your particular question, if you can see the Angel then it can see you as well, in both cases poorly.
Muziel Moreau |
Cool, seems like an easy way to handle that! I'll just stay on the edge where I can see and be seen. Separately, I forgot to mention that ranged attacks always have a 20% chance of missing due to Enveloping Winds that swirl around him - didn't think of that earlier.
Penelope Dorn |
Sorry she tells Cimri, Might have gotten carried away a little smiling though, she presses her foot on the corpse to push it off her sword.
I know out of turn, not taking actions just responding to Cimri before the angle guts Penelope in vengeance. Better than the last words of "Ak"
