My vote's for the latter option - Cue Ball's a big lug, so feel free to describe him scrapping in the fiction as appropriate, but he shouldn't be providing a mechanical benefit unless he's skilled in that area. Keeps more of a distance between our characters and them. We're the crew, they're the redshirts. On a Star Trek show, you never see one of the background characters do anything they aren't trained in, because the focus of the drama isn't on them, it's on us, the main characters.
Everett Kale |
I still think the real question here is whether we think Hirelings should be up front with you, or in the back.
- If they're up front, they'll take a bit of the spotlight. They'll also be more likely to die (ironic since they're more durable. But I tend to break durable things more often then fragile things, because that's what they're made for). You also may have to pay more if you aren't careful how you use them.
- If they're in the back, your characters remain the sole focus with out any being shifted to them. The hirelings interact in the fiction only by aiding you. This way they're also likely to stick around longer, and there's a bit less to track (injuries, custom moves, etc.)
Hmm. This is a tough one, and I appreciate how much thought you've put into reflecting on it (I enjoy a good Filibuster from time to time).
After some consideration, though, I think that the 'background' option makes the most sense for the style in which we've been playing. We've focused a lot on world-building and texture-creating, and the hirelings have grown organically out of that. I see them as being part of the setting.
I rather like the 'spotlight' hireling mode, and I would be interested in playing in a campaign that used that option as its focus. But it doesn't feel, to me, to be the best option for this campaign.

Alright, it looks then that at least 3 of the 5 like hirelings to the background! Thanks for the input guys. I'll still be working to remind us all of their presence so that may use some of their options, but there's no need to redefine things then.
Also, I don't know what one does on ship when it's someone's birthday, but a member of the crew celebrates his birthday tomorrow. Congratulate Quelthas if you get the chance ;)

Kale I think you missed my off-topic question due to Mog's filibuster and the thread switching pages.
If I had approached you and requested a few of your hairs for my experiments, would you have allowed it? I just have to know if I got my hairs from you with your permission or not; either way, I have some.

Whoops! I did see your question, but forgot to respond, my bad. Yes, Kale would give Nuemo his hair, though he would ask what it was for.
This plays well with Kale's current Bond with Numeo. The Captain is trying to figure out if he can trust the Alchemist, and what Nuemo does with the hair will certainly have a bearing on how that Bond resolves.

Also, I assume some of you may be interested in this sort of thing, simply because I very much am.
The creator of Apocalypse World (which DW is a hack of) is working on a medieval/fantasy version. Not a hack, per se, but a new game that is tied so much into the concept of Apocalypse World that it warrants keeping the moniker at least in part.
While I love Dungeon World, there's something very beautiful about Apocalypse World that DW simply is unable to replicate through its own modifications. So this new development has me VERY intrigued.
Here's some links to the process, if you are also curious. Sharing is caring.
Blog which currently also displays the first sample playbook.
Development Thread on the Apocalypse World forums. This would require a bit more work to find and digest the interesting parts, but if you do it explains more of the intention and process.

I'd tend to agree. Background "but we gave them names" seems to be the way we've been playing it with some of the crew, and I can't quite see shoving them into the spotlight. At least not with the dynamic Pirates we've been crafting over the months...

That done, the mad prophet cocks his head to one side as he considers the Captain's question, looking at him over his shoulder. Turning to him, he mutters quietly, "Captain...there are magics known to my island that we can use for great power. There are...elements of risk, as with any endeavor. The cost...is high." He pauses, and stares directly into the Captain's eyes. "the rewards...are worth it."
Without breaking his gaze, Numeo's right eye begins to twitch. "You, Captain, are somehow tied to..." he pauses, looks away for the first time, shudders. "events." he looks back up. "I have seen it. I must take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that you succeed. For...everything."
And Happy Birthday Quelthas! Mine is in one month tomorrow. :)

Mine is just over a couple weeks away too :) Seems we are going to be celebrating lots of birthdays in quick succession. :)
GM Mogthrasir |
Sept. 23 for Numeo, and when's yours Darya?
-------------------------
That was a good roll on the parley, Darya. Let me explain though what's happening so it doesn't look like I'm ignoring it.
First off, you guys may get tired of me always explaining my thought process. But I do that because I really do welcome feedback, so this is my attempt at "letting you in on the process". If Numeo felt like the options I gave him for that last defy danger were kinda rough for example, since a 7-9 is still fundamentally a success and he ended up taking damage as if he hadn't rolled at all: I welcome that conversation. With this one, I want to address it first as I prefer that to letting it go unasked and upsetting you.
One of the things people who are well accustomed to RPGs struggle with in DW is that there are no difficulty modifiers. None at all. This seems so foreign, because it means that you make the same exact roll to Parley with the half drunk transient dude hitting on you in the tavern that you would make to Parley with King who can't even be bothered to remember your name. Hell, it's even the same roll you'd make to Parley with the Devil himself.
This is a struggle, because some of those situations should certainly be more difficult than others. And DW deals with difficulty differently. One way is the GM moves that follow those actions--a botched roll with a drunks suitor is pretty mild compared to a botched roll with the King. The second way is by the amount of work it takes to even get to the point where you can make that roll.
There's an article in the Italian Webzine, Mondo Sotterraneo, called "The Method of the Onion" which explains this concept. In brief, every presented struggle is really an onion with several layers leading to potential resolutions. The more difficult the struggle, the more layers are present. With the example above, there are no extra layers to parleying with the drunk suitor. He's paying attention to you, you have leverage, the social currency is clearly present... make your roll.
But with the King who really doesn't even know you, there's several layers that must be deal with before you can even roll, some of which may require rolls in themselves. You'd have to gain an audience with him, establish some form of authority, present valuable leverage as well as indicate that you have the capacity to utilize it, etc. After all of the leg work is done to make the concept of parleying with a king even possible within the fiction, then you make your roll.
These layers are either explicitly described by the GM (like the crab-centaurs with giant shields... it should be clear that one would have to bypass the shield before being able to throw a Hack and Slash roll), or apparent within the fiction. In this case, a person unknown to the Orcillians presenting themselves in the midst of an ambush would get attacked. Your first layer, if you adopt the terminology, is getting this militaristic tribe to even listen to you without trying to kill you. A likely layer to follow would be gaining the ear of someone with power to do something about it.
In no way am I trying to discourage a parley course of action. I honestly think that would be pretty awesome, and you certainly have the charisma to pull it off. But in this situation, you're likely going to have to be really crafty or endure some abuse before you'll get that chance. Damn those Orcillians.

I understand :) I saw it as a risk when she appeared there anyway. I'm just trying to figure out how Darya would respond to the threat. Because I can see her going about it a few different ways.

Sorry, I was wrapped up in my question to the Captain. I am a Whovian, and that WAS a brilliant reference. :)

I thought it was a very sharp reference, myself! I'm also a Doctor Who enthusiast. But shouldn't Quelthas be "the Oncoming Storm Mage"?
I wonder if you could run a Doctor Who game using the Dungeon World system? Would you call it DW: DW? And what if you had a crossover with Darkwing Duck? Would it be DW: DW x DW?
Oh, and a happy belated birthday to you, Mr. Greybreak! And happy early birthday to everyone else. It looks like we've got a lot of September children in this group; mine's the 15th, actually...

Given Quelthas' proven tactic of using a storm as a weapon at sea... no really... stop laughing... ok ok, a tactic that works-most-of-the-time-pretty-well-but-sometimes-not-so-much... plus the application of the The Karpas Manuever both at sea and by air, I think "The Oncoming Storm" sans the Mage part works just as well as a nickname for Quelthas.
Such a crossover might be D^3W^3...

Afraid I'm not a "Whovian" myself. But on the topic of DW:DW, I'll leave this right here.
(I don't believe there are any darkwing duck hacks, but maybe you could take up that torch)

I'll admit I missed it (and I consider myself Whovian, embarrassing). I had to re-read everything I read Thursday and likely skimmed over it when I re-read things. I had been focusing on the Hireling stuff.
GM Mogthrasir |
No worries Kale, I've been really out of it the past couple weeks too. I don't know if it's this cold thing or what, but it's made me pretty crappy in regards to the PbP scene (Numeo I'm sure can attest, as I'm involved in 3 games with him...).
I'm hoping things change in the near future, but doing my best to keep things running in the meantime!
Darya the Free |
Oops. Thought I got something up here last night, but I'm traveling this week. Heading out on a 12 hour drive to do an on-site training this morning. I'll be a spotty poster till I get back home since I don't know how much free time I'll have.
Eli Forge |
Nice to see that the Pirate World wagon seems to have started moving again, don't you think? Are you a backer Mog? I got interested too late for that myself, but told Owen I'd be happy to help with layout, when & if they get that far.
GM Mogthrasir |
Yes Eli, I'm a backer and am glad to see it moving again. It's been a strange ride :S.
And yeah, I've been in a weird place lately, so I apologize for how much this has slowed down. I'm pulling my crap together though. It's also been an involved week as the college I work for is just about to start classes (Monday) so I've been stuck in seminars and pre-service activities. I'll get things happening shortly!
Also, there's a lot for me to catch up on in your game Numeo! I'm jumping there next, so I hope I haven't caused too much disruption!
GM Mogthrasir |
I am so sorry to all of you. But I need to stop running this game, and I apologize for how that affects all of you.
I currently find myself struggling to keep from being overwhelmed, which has affected my reliability and consistency as both a player and a GM. I have no excuses, just a sincere apology for the way this impacts all of you who have been an absolute pleasure to game with.
These games have been extremely enjoyable, and I am so thankful that you all have given me the opportunity to run as well as take part in what I still am pretty convinced is the greatest system currently for fantasy gaming :). This decision has nothing to do with the games themselves, and everything to do with my current inability to engage in them to the degree that honors you and your own commitments to it.
I appreciate you all, should I ever manage to get my crap together I look forward to gaming with you at some point in the future, should you decide to give me another chance.
Quelthas Greybreak |
No worries man. It has been a fun ride, and a great intro into this new-to-me system! Take care of life. Should you have time down the road to get another game going, let me know.
When you get a moment, I kicked you an email a few days ago. Get back to me when you can.
Numeo |
I'm already DMing two campaigns on these boards, but since I was also a player in Mog's two campaigns and they're closing, I have time opening up in my (very active) posting schedule. Who would be interested in hearing what I have to say? Considering rebooting my all-skinwalker campaign that I had to close before. (double posted to Mog's two campaign discussion threads)
Darya the Free |
Sad to see this game end, I liked Darya and Dusk, but I understand and no hard feelings here! If you start up a game again in the future, let me know because I would love to join! Wishing you the best wherever life takes you :)
@Numeo: That one was fun :) I'm in if you choose to reboot it.
