Great game in the beginning - nice group of players. Unfortunately, a couple went MIA and I had to close the game down before I wanted to. I was looking forward to a much longer game and eventually a campaign.

And this is just one reason I chose you guys - to help me with the "crunchy bits" of the game. My tired old 1E/2E eyes tend to overlook such things. :)

NitNat Clo-oose wrote:

Sorry for messing up Catila's name! Well, I guess Cole messed it up first. haha

Cole, I noticed that one of your listed trained skills is
"Concentration +8"

I think this skill is a vestige from 3.5 rules. Do you mean Spellcraft?
If that is the case it would be Spellcraft +5 (+1INT +1rank +3class).

Good catch there, Concentration is not a skill, all spellcasters use it, he he. I switched that skill point to Sense Motive, and updated the Concentration total.

First group post is up!

And now is the time to ask a few questions about how you want to do things during the game. This is my first PbP on this forum and I want to make sure that I am being clear in my communications about settings, actions, combat, etc. So, here are my questions:

1/ Skill and ability checks - have I been clear so far on spoiler information? The module kinda helps me out in its write up, but I may ask for check beyond those indicated. Let me know if I've totally blown it, or asked for the wrong skill check.

2/ Group initiative - would it make things quicker if I rolled group initiative? I could use a rotating schedule, using a character's initiative modifier for the group. For example, in the first combat I would roll initiative using Alanthian's modifier. The next combat I would use Brankh's, and so forth. How does that sound to you?

3/ Marching order - how do you want the order of the group? Within minutes of entering the ossuary, we're going to need marching order. I would rather you come up with the order - both for single-file and for side-by-side. Cool?

4/Maps, pics, and such - anyone have a preference? I used Google docs for the Meeting Post skirmish, and am considering Photobucket or Flickr to host images. Lord Thorin (Phil) also offered to host such things and that is an option. Thoughts please!

Female Human Paladin/Marshal: 5/1 HP: 30/62 AC: 23(26 Smite, 20 No Shield) T: 12(15) FF: 21(24) CMD: 21(F:19) F: +11 R: +8 W: +13 Perception: +6, Immune Disease, Fear (+4 morale 10 ft.)

1: You are doing things by the standard and accepted form for this forum, so all good. :)

2. I believe it is fastest when the GM rolls up initiative for each player at the start of combat. I don't agree with rotating group initiative modifiers as it penalizes players with good Dex scores. It just means that us players will have to consider contingency plans if we decide to post before the people ahead of us in initiative order.

3. I believe my character should be up towards the front, being a S&B fighting type with my own healing capabilities would allow me to weather most initial attacks though I am open to other suggestions.

4. I am fine with both Googles docs and Photobucket. :)

1. Agree with Saoirse
2. Agree with Saoirse. GM rolls INIT at start of the encounter. It wouldn't be fair to penalize good DEX scores.

3. Brankh prefers to stay right behind a leading melee character in a position where he can reach past with the longspear.

Tactical preference: right behind frontliners he can offer encouragement, shoot fire bolts, deliver touch healing and use the longspear to reach past. Brankh is a strong channeler, and is also useful in the midst of a group. On a side note: Cole might wish to try using the longspear one day and have Brankh go ahead with his falchion, which is nastier than the longsword at this stage.

4. Agree with Saoirse. Can the photos not be posted in Googledocs as well?

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

"Can the photos not be posted in Googledocs as well?"

Don't know - my knowledge on Googledocs is not very thorough. I rolled a "3" on my skills check. :)

That's 1/3 of the players who prefer individual initiatives...will wait and see what the other 2/3 say.

I can definitely see Saoirse in front - as a paladin I wouldn't expect anything less. Would she lead in single file and share a 10' section with Thorin or perhaps Cole in a double-file formation?

Here's an example, and it's just an example, of a single-file marching order for this group:

Saoirse > Thorin > Cole > Alanthian > Catila > Brankh
(I placed Brankh and Catila in back because of their vision - somebody up front would need to carry a light source.)

Thoughts?

I agree with Saoirse on all points. And Thorin would want to be up front.
He still has his Cavalier mentality and considers himself a good leader and doesn't really think the alcohol penalizes his reflexes. He wouldn't mind sharing point with Saoirse, as he knows her already and she has gained his respect.

oh and if you need to host pics on my webhost I have no problem with that. register today, and Ill up your forum permissions then you can make a sample post in the general off topic forum, and see if you can link the url to this forum. if not I can either set up an ftp server login for you or figure something else out.

Just logged in - how do I post a pic/map?

1. Looks fine to me.
2. I agree with both Saorise, and Brankh. GM rolls inits.
3. Cole is ok with trying the longspear, in the right situation. Cole could also handle the lightsource duties, thus freeing Saorise and Thorin to handle any melee threats.
4. Any of these websites are ok with me.

M Brownin (Half Pale Skin/Half Dark Skin) Healer 8/Merchant 3

1/ Skill and ability checks - You methods have been perfect thus far. Please keep up the good work!

2/ Group initiative - I agree completely with the others. DM rolling individual init's for all is fastest and best.

3/ Marching order - The proposed order works for me, or however it is, as long as Catila is in the middle of the group, where she'll be most effective (and safest ; ) As for light, Cole & Catila can work together on this. She doesn't have the Light spell, but as long as someone casts it on something small, like a piece of fabric or a pebble, she can keep it aloft and move it around at will with her prestidigitation spell. Neat eh? : D

4/Maps, pics, and such - I have no preference on this at all. Google docs is great, or however you wish to go

ok i just set your permissions higher. just start a post and I've got remote uploading activated. just add file, upload, and then place inline

then right click image and select properties and find the url, that is where the photo is located. use that to post here. oh and if you want to see where my campaign is at the password for my forums is "asmodeus"

off topic would be fine

Elf Rogue HP: 11/17 | AC 18 | T 14| FF 14 | CMB +2 | F +1| R +7 | W +0| Init +4 | Per +7(+8 Traps)

-Skill check is spot on HK

-I prefer you roll individual Init. (of course since mine is +6)

-Since this is a dungeon crawl, I think I would be good up front as scout/trap finder. (also why I buffed his melee up)

-As for maps just as long as i can log in I don't care.

Second post is up - I embedded two urls in the post - one in the title and one in Valanthe's name (which is linked to Lord Thorin's webpage). Let me know if you have any trouble accessing them.

Oh, and the video links are just something I do from time to time; it won't be for every post. But...you might learn a little bit more about my tastes of music. :)

I'm not sure what you and Thorin have going on that site....it looks neat. We could create our own site on google sites along the same lines eventually. But for now I would focus on playing.

Great weekend of posting, folks! Really enjoyed the brief, but terse interaction with Valanthe - kudos to Khaladon for getting her all riled up! :D
As the last post stated, need an affirmation from each character - a couple of you have been very quiet during all of this. Just want to make sure you are still on board.
Will check back in later tonight.

You guys take it easy in surgery...and good luck.

I'm at home for the next couple of days..so my posts will slow down for a little bit. Family demands take up time.

Next week its back to Toronto. I'll be checking from my wireless..maybe my posts will be somewhat truncated (I hate typing on those smart phones). But I'll be here to contribute.

I see you have that page up now HKn. You can see it has potential, eh? I found it on the Enworld site. I messed around with one of these when preparing another campaign on the Obsidian Portal. I found that it ended up taking so much time I never ended up running the game. That's the problem with all the gadgets and accessories. They add more tools but create more work. At the end of the day its the forum that matters and the community that plays on it....and I like these Paizo forums...despite the restricted options of the site.

At least now we have our own repository for the images, soundtracks and battlemaps of our campaign And its nice to get that background material you put there too ;-). Perhaps as we keep adding stuff it will take a life of its own one day. Thanks for getting it started.

I know! I quickly realized it is a serious undertaking to maintain the page. Much more work than running this game! :)

Thanks for letting me know - and no worries - check in and post when you can. Going in for surgery in a couple of hours...will check back in tonight.

Well. The characters will have a little time to prepare before going into the crypt to their doom! I suppose we could role play every aspect of their preparation....but that might get tedious. A little meta gaming is allowed, no?

Are we all prepared? With two clerics,a Paladin and some healing potions we have all kinds of healing. But perhaps its not physical wounds we need to worry about down there. Are our psychological defenses up to the task?

Here is how Brankh can help.
1. His born leader trait gives allies +1 on Will saving throws!
2. He gets 5 channels/day at DC17, but that might be wasted against
powerful undead.
3. I think we have time to pray for some spells. Any suggestions, Cole?
Brankh is thinking of Swallow your Fear and Protection from Evil.

I think some of you will need torches or lamps. (well, Brankh won't).
Do we have ropes and other adventuring gear?

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

Back home - surgery went well - ice pack, pain, getting ready for some soup and hydrocodone.

Great idea to "pool your resources" and see how folks can help each other out. Don't really need to role-play it (unless you just want too), but we can brainstorm here - maybe get a tactical plan together for melee, for doors, traps, etc.

Torches or some other light source will be needed. If you don't have anything, the "general store" - Haverston's Grange (I think is the name) is not too far off.

Might be a good time for roll call and a break down of just basic equipment, spells, feats, you can use in the crypts. I also might try to put together a stats list for everyone that I will attach at the end of each group post - sound cool?

Look for a post tomorrow morning that will take the group into the ossuary and begin their mission.

Hey Nat - do you want me to write something up about Brankh's trip to Heaven's Ladder or just say it happened and go forward? Your call man - I don't mind either way; although my soup has arrived (by my lovely nurse/wife) and after the hydrocodone, I'll soon be snoozing I think. Let me know - I'm cool either way.

M Brownin (Half Pale Skin/Half Dark Skin) Healer 8/Merchant 3

Glad to hear your surgery went well bro, here's to quick rehabilitation! : )

And great idea Nit-Nat. Here's Catila's list of helpful thingamajigs:

-All the great bard buffs: Countersong, Distraction and Fascination (though this will be of little to no use vs undead)
Plus also as a Detective she gains this ability:
Careful Teamwork(Su):
All allies within 30 feet gain a +1 bonus on Initiative checks, Perception, and Disable Device checks for 1 hour. They also gain a +1 insight bonus on Reflex saves and to AC against traps and when they are flat-footed.

-These are the spells she knows:
CANTRIPS: (At Will) DC13
Detect Magic
Ghost Sound,
Presdigitation
Read Magic

1ST LEVEL: DC14 2/Day CAST:0
Expeditious Retreat
Grease

And this is the total list of her stuff:
MW Chain Shirt 250gp 12lbs
MW Halfling Sling-Staff 320gp 3lbs
Bullets(10) 1sp 5lb
Bullets, Smoke(10) 100gp 5lb
Dagger 2gp 1lb (in Spring loaded Wrist Sheath)

MUNDANE ITEMS:
Backpack 2gp .5lbs (Weight Held=9.75lbs)

(In Backpack)
Bag, waterproof 5sp .5lbs
Bedroll 5sp 1lb
Blanket 2sp .25lbs
Candle (2) 2cp

IN POUCH BELT:
Holy Water(2) 25gp 1lb
Smoke Pellet (1) 25gp -
Mirror, small steel 10gp .5lbs
Vial CLW (1d8+5)

As for light, as I mentioned earlier, if Cole can cast a light orison on something small Catila can keep it aloft indefinitely. A couple more light spells for front and back positions and we should be good. Plus of course some of you stronger types can carry some torches for emergency back-up

Khaladon, I like that idea of the light orison on a pebble idea, he can be the primary light source in the party. I envision Cole as the backup fighter/cleric type in the group anyway.

Here are his spells Memorized:

0-level (DC 13) Stabilize, Guidance, Light; 1st-level (DC 14) Bless, Shield of Faith, Magic Weapon (D)

Also his domain abilities:

- Law (Archon): [1st - Divine Favor] 6/6 uses
Granted Power: Touch of Law (Sp): You can touch a willing creature as a standard action, infusing it with the power of divine order and allowing it to treat all attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws for 1 round as if the natural d20 roll resulted in an 11. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier.

- War (Tactics): [1st - Magic Weapon] 5/6 uses
Granted Power: Seize the Initiative (Su): Whenever you and your allies roll for initiative, you can grant one ally within 30 feet the ability to roll twice and take either result. This decision is made before results are revealed. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier.

So a couple of nice buffs there.

Finally, his equipment:

Scale Mail
Lt Sheel Shield
Longsword
Heavy Crossbow w/10 bolts
Silver Holy Symbol
CLW potion (1d8+5)
2 vials Holy Water
2 Sunrods
Backpack
Bedroll
4 days rations
Waterskin

So basic stuff, but no rope....

Thorin is wearing the clothes on his back, and carrying a homemade great club. I figured someone somewhere I knock the crap out of will have a sword or something I can use, so if we run across that, the I call DIBS.

I can use the challenge skill once per day per the cavalier skill. any attack I perform gives me the equivalent of my level as a bonus against my target, and gives my allies that very same bonus to their attacks on my target as well. the downside is I'm at a -2 ac to all opponents that are not the subject of my challenge, so I need to find some armor soon.

I chose blindfighting, but me and hedgeknight converted the skill a bit so instead of fighting while vision impaired it allows me to fight at no penalties/very little penalties depending on how drunk I am. :)

as a cavalier I'm proficient in all simple and martial weapons and all forms of armor. I can use any kind of shield except a tower shield.

I also have power attack which gives me -1 to hit as a trade off to get +2 to damage or +3 if I'm using a 2 handed weapon (which I currently am)

should be interesting to prove all your characters who are being naysayers and thinking that I'm going to be a hindrance to the group by being drunk wrong. hehe.

Still need you to update your character sheet in your profile, dude. Also, since a Cavalier has a code of honor, and Thorin has basically thrown his in the toilet, I am considering just how much of his class abilities would still be applicable. What do you other folks think about that? I'm thinking primarily of the Challenge ability. Of course, at 2nd level the Order ability might come into play too...assuming Thorin hasn't regained some of his honor by then. Anyway, I'd like to hear what you guys think about that.

And, since the drugs have kicked in and I'm in a slight state of euphoria, I am going to work on the next group post - having assumed you guys are about ready to rock 'n' roll! Please don't stop listing your character's traits and stuff here to see how you all match up as a group. Be thinking about tactics...it won't be long before you need them. Heh, heh.

being drunk doesn't throw his honor in the toilet. in fact, he's done several things to follow the cavalier code of honor, like saving Saoirse, and returning to the church to repay his debt. in which ways have you seen that he hasn't acted honorably?

I still can't see the section you want me to add this extra stuff at.

On your character profile page, there is an "Edit My Profile" link on the right hand side, just above the "About Lord Thorin" title. Click there and copy and paste all of your stats (AC, HP, attacks, skills, feats, equipment, etc) into the window. Save it and you're good to go.

As for Thorin's honor, I just figure being a drunken, slovenly Cavalier is somehow not following the code. Maybe I'm wrong. That's cool with me. Just throwing that out there for discussion.

that puts me right up front where I want to be so I'm totally fine with that. you could give me the chime to use as a weapon lol.

no seriously, I dont want it. hehe.

can anyone help me find the section of my profile that Hedge wants me to edit? sorry for being stupid here, but I'm just not seeing it.

Lets Rock!

Thorin: When you click to edit Thorin's profile there will be a text box brlow which you can edit. Just paste your character sheet in it. Later you can tool around to make it look the way you want. Everyone has their own style. Look at some of our profiles for examples. The profile for NitNat Clo-oose has a template character sheet. If you want the template with spoilers built in I would have to email it.

It looks like Thorin is surrounded by righteous teetotallers. That'll be interesting. What happens if he runs out of drink? Are we in trouble then? And I like the club. Someone has to wield a bludgeoning weapon.

Catila: As long as one of us prepares the orison, we can light up a trinket for you. Do we need just one? I thinbk she should hold the chime.

Brankh's Selections:

Brankh has picked up some extra oil and torches...just incase we need some fire and light. Fire is good!

Longspear and Falchion

Fire Bolt (Sp):
As a standard action (ranged touch), he can unleash a d6 scorching bolt of divine fire from his outstretched hand.
Not a bad option from range: it bypasses armour and can be used to ignite things

Touch of Glory (Sp):
Bestow Bonus to Charisma based Checks: +1. 6x/day. Duration 1 hour. (Not sure how useful this will be down there).

Channel: 1d6 / DC 17. DC17 is quite high for level 1 channeling (Improved Channel/Glory Domain) . 5x/day

Orisons - I like Cole's picks - but I'll take something slightly different just to cover more bases
Stabilize, Resistance, Spark

Level 1: Party does not have much blasting - so picked Burning Hands

I sent you an email, Thorin

Brankh added a simple club to his own inventory.

At doors I propose:

Alanthanian opens the door and pulls aside.
Thorin stands ready to go in.
Brankh stands behind him reaching forth with the spear (he can see better through darkness)
Saorise follows into the room
Followed by Catila
Then Cole
Alanthanian stays back asseses the situation. Slips in behind stealthily.
