Game Master hedgeknight

Great game in the beginning - nice group of players. Unfortunately, a couple went MIA and I had to close the game down before I wanted to. I was looking forward to a much longer game and eventually a campaign.

And Wow! Finally having read the IC Hedgeknight I must say I am Very impressed! I've been around PbP's for quite some time now and I can honestly say that already yours is looking to be one of the best I've ever been in. Can't wait to see what you have in store for Catila! : )

I totally agree Khaladon.

Great detail, Hedgenight! And I'm sippin on some Sour Mash myself. A toast in your honour.

Khaladon, I think Dr.Eyesquint will make a great sleuth. Great character concept! I can't wait to see her in action.

I hope I'm not out of place to suggest something. I think you should put at least one rank into Knowledge - Local.

The Detective option gives the Doctor Eye for Detail (terrific!) with its bonuses - in exchange for Bardic Knowledge, which would have trained her in all of the Knowledge skills.

But as a Detective, Dr. Eyesquint now needs to invest ranks in Knowledge:Local , otherwise the Eye for Detail bonus is wasted on an untrained knowledge skill which is only useful for checks at DC10 or less....unless you wish to invest in local knowledge at a later level. But what kind of sleuth does not have training in local knowledge (and maybe some other kinds of Knowledge as well)?

You are absoloutly right NitNat. On both our DM's flair for wonderfully described detail and also Catila's need for ranks in K (local)! Thanks for the catch. And all comments, critiscims and tips are Always welcome. If it's ok DM HK I changed the bonus for favoured class, dropping a hp and adding a skill point into Knowledge(local). Did this before posting in IC too. Cool?

And hey, where you at btw HK? I'm beach bound myself, in the sunny paradise of Tulum, Mexico. Actually, I'm curious where All my fellow players are hailing (or at least playing) from too. I myself was born in Jamaica, grew up since 3 in Canada and have been in Mexico for the past 4 years.

So? Who's next? ; )

M Brownin (Half Pale Skin/Half Dark Skin) Healer 8/Merchant 3

Oh here's the link on Hero Points. They're pretty simple, basically the same as Action Points if I´m recalling correctly. Basically the can give a bonus on certain die rolls and actions. Can be fun and make for some 'Heroic' moves sometimes.

Anyway, I'm ok using them or not, whatever the majority (or our All Powerful DM ; ) decides is cool.

I am here in America's Finest City, aka San Diego. At least until the Big One hits, that is, he he.

Spring Break sux if you live here, trust me.

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

Your tweaks to your character, Khaladan, are cool with me!

I was born in southwest Virginia but have lived near Wilmington, NC for the past 12 1/2 years. It was nearly 80 degrees here today. Very nice. And I hear you, Kozaric - tourist season can be a hassle here at the beach.

By the way, my given name is Gary, but if you feel more comfortable referring to me as Noble Lumpkin or Illustrious Potentate, well, that will be fine too. :D

Hey Cole, I lived in a small surfing town north of San Diego for a little bit, Cardiff By The Sea. You know it? Great little place. Whole town shuts down during the tides to surf lol

And Florida and North Carolina, cool. Thanks for sharing all!

PS :p Gary lol

Yep I know the place you are talking about, but I don't live near there, I am about 20 miles inland from there. It's some beautiful beaches down there, although I spend more time in the Carlsbad beaches though. Mission Beach is awesome though!

I'm on Not-so-Sunny Vancouver Island. In the rainforest on the far coast! At least for now. I'll be heading back to Toronto in a few days. I'll miss the salty tang and the fragrant redwoods.

I'm not too familiar with Hero Points...and not sure if they are necessary. But I am happy to go with the flow if most of you and or HK wish to use them. If I have to vote I'll say go without...just to keep things simple.

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

Sounds like Hero Points won't be necessary, so we'll make do without them. Being from the "old school" of gaming, if you're character wants to do something really heroic, just ask, and we'll see it will work out.

I'm just south of Chicago. A city called Joliet. Made famous by the blues brothers and our very old and gothic looking prison where most prison tv shows and movies are filmed. Not much else to do here. I've lived just about everywhere being a tattoo artist for the last 20 years, has given me the freedom to move around a bit.

It's funny how the internet can bring together a group of like minded people from all corners of the world to enjoy the thing they have in common together.

Ahh yes Chicago. I was born and raised in the Woodbridge/Bolingbrook area until I was 12, so I do remember that part of town fondly.

Blues Brothers = Pure awesome!

bolingbrook isn't very far at all.

Lord Thorin wrote:

Yeah, of course I was there in the late 70's when all that was there was farmland and stuff. Probably completely different now.

BTW roll your Crit confirmation on that attack :)

Had a great weekend of posting for the start of our game! I know it's early, but I hope all of you are enjoying it so far. Please don't hesitate to comment here or email me your thoughts, suggestions, gripes, bribes, threats, promises of beer money, etc. about how to do more with your character.
I'm waiting on a couple of you to post before I move on with your opening scenario - don't want to get too far ahead of you. ;)
I'll be back online tonight...but again, I can respond to emails throughout the day.

I wonder if I am using the Guidance Orison properly. If it lasts "until discharged" - what's to stop a power gamer from using the orison over and over to create a permanent state of +1 competence on himself and allies?

M Brownin (Half Pale Skin/Half Dark Skin) Healer 8/Merchant 3

Hey DM HK, a question. How quickly will we be raising in levels, more or less? I ask because I specifially didn't put skill points into some skills I otherwise would have, like Sense Motive for example, because th second level bard ability 'Versitile Performance', makes that skill (and the points therefore wasted in it) redundant.

I also didn't realize we'd be having this much city/social interaction. don't get me wrong, I'm loving it, but it's making think I may need to still rework a few of Catila's skills?

Hey cool NitNat! I'm from Toronto, grew up in North York. And my little brother lives on Vancouver Island. What you been doing out there? And Why are you heading back to Toronto?? Don't get me wrong TO's a great city, but it's sure no 'rainforested Vancouver Island'!

And @Lord Thorin: Ya, I coulnd't agree more man. Love the internet for that. This is my Only way to get my D&D fix satisfied down here. Funny, I used to be a tattoo artist too (ok ok well kinda, only Henna tattoos. lol But I only drew freehand and lots of folks tried to get me to step up to real ones. I still may some day...

M Brownin (Half Pale Skin/Half Dark Skin) Healer 8/Merchant 3

@Brankh: nice catchh dude! I for sure was thinking "Oh oh, who knows where those kids are going to end up?" Well done!

And D'oh! Two nat 20's in a row! DM, Don't suppose I can save those for some other time and roll again? ; )

It is sad to leave B.C. I was here helping an ailing relative. But its time to go back. There's good work to be done in T.O. and $$ to be made. And I do love Toronto...especially downtown.

Ontario has it own charms with the Canadian Shield at our doorstep (can't wait to jump into Georgian Bay!) I'm sure I'll get my outdoor fix there too.

As for Guidance, the rules and the forums I checked are pretty clear. It is supposed to be unlimited. I'm going to be using Guidance a lot! As long as Brankh selects Guidance as a daily orison...I shall make sure that he casts it at the start of each day on himself and his allies....and resetting the charge each time its used.

Perhaps the DM has something else in mind....let's see how it works in play.

lol I was gonna say!

And ya, downtown is great. I especially like the last area I was living in, right by High Park. Was great to be right across from all that greenery and have such easy access. Plus I found it to be quieter and the air fresher. All thanks due to the said greenery i am sure.

Questions & Answers:

NitNat wrote:

According to the description, the duration is "1 minute or until discharged." That means the orison lasts a maximum of 1 minute...but may be discharged any time prior to that. The spell is designed to give the recipient a +1 bonus on a single action, skill check, or saving throw, implying that it is to be used straightway and not to be delayed...thus, the minute duration.

I'm using the medium progression level. As for Catila's skills, you're free to do what you want, but this city/social interaction is about to end very soon. This is just a "prologue" of sorts to get everyone's character in town and see how you interact with the citizens. It's just my way of doing things. :)

The adventure itself is a good ol' fashioned dungeon crawl. Oh yeah!

Khaladon wrote:

First ever SP reference in a PbP. Awesome! Boy, I just Know we are gonna have some Fun : D

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

When I realized that Thorin had killed the Halfling, and that I didn't have a name for him, and that Carney was going to be VERY upset...the image and the now famous line just popped into my head. I had to use it! :D

Nitnat - loved Brankh's actions in your last post with Yap - very good stuff, man!

Great stuff so far. Far better developed than what I managed to come up with as an introduction.

Thank's Hedgenight.

I love playing clerics. Everything Brankh does has moral consequences. Each action puts him out on a limb and forces him to make tough decisions and take responsibility. Its also tough for him because he does not have a sharp intellect and can be overzealous at times.

Honestly, I felt ashamed for him when he didn't stand up and fight those slavers. I think he felt ashamed too....but I think he made the wise choice in the end..we`ll see

I also am jealous of the other players who already got to hack the limbs off bad guys! lol

Sometimes the decision not to hack into bad guys' limbs immediately is better off in the long run, as it seems to be in this case. It is certainly the tougher decision, and I applaud you as a player for being willing to consider it.

I like how in HN's Play by Post we are weaving different strands of the plot together in an interesting way that wouldn't work at a tabletop.

I really like playing clerics too, NitNat - and I'm enjoying Brankh very much.

Thorin - glad to have you back. My advice > drink more bourbon. :)

How much should I deduct from Catila's stash o' cash HK?

PS, i normally only use bold for raised voices and such, but do you prefer it to be used all the time for speech?

I'd say deduct 10 silver total - five for the meal and five for your tip.

As for using bold speech, it doesn't matter to me. I'm going to use it just because it's easier to see on this forum. Some forums have different colors and that makes it easier to see it. This forum's background is very white and for me, sometimes the words all run together. I really wish Paizo would put some effort into their messageboards and give us some options on theme, design, emoticons, colored text, etc.

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

Just waiting on a couple of characters to follow up on posts and then we will fast forward into the adventure...if that is cool with everyone? Of course, if there are any other things you want your character to do, just say so and we'll work it out.

Cole is just waiting for Alanthain to decide if he wants to head to the Sorry Excuse, or if he will head with Cole to join up for the mission.

Cool. thanks.

And as for these message boards, I couldn't agree, while I am very grateful for these boards and all the fun I've had on them, with just a little more effort and virtually no expense to Paizo these boards could be much better.

maybe we should start a petition or something?

Oh, and while i love the RPing and could do it all day, fast forwarding is also great with me.

Good morning folks - I will be moving the game along after today, officially kicking off the adventure no later than Saturday. If you character needs any further preparation, please post it today. Looking forward to diving into the Godsmouth Heresy!

Edit: One thing I did notice is that Saorise and Thorin need character sheets in their profiles. This needs to be done so I can easily access your sheets during the game. Thanks.

oh I did make the offer to hedgeknight about using my forums instead of these. I just got the dice mod working this morning on mine and you can post pics, do private messages etc. it's up to hedgeknight, but I don't like the white background on this board either. You can check out my board at:

currently my campaign part of the board is locked to new users but you can get the idea of how it looks and works on the other sections.

You should have an "Edit My Profile" option in the top right corner of your character page. Click that and it will open a window below all of your stats titled "About Lord Thorin" - it is in that window that you copy and paste all of the other info.

As for using your webpage, I'm going to pass on that and keep the game on the boards here. Will use Flickr or Photobucket or Google Docs for maps and such. Thanks for the offer, Phil.

Alright folks - I'm ready to move ahead. There is and has been some great role-playing with the citizens and each other, and this setting is so rich we could game in it for months. But, you signed up for the Godsmouth Heresy and I signed on to run it, so let's get to it! Who's with me? Yeaarrghh!!

Nice posts so far, folks! I especially liked the way Alanthian, Brankh, and Cole describe themselves for Catila's perceptive eyes - very nice indeed! Will write in Saoirse and Thorin tonight and have a full group ready to go before you know it!

Yee-haw!!

Sorry for messing up Catila's name! Well, I guess Cole messed it up first. haha

Cole, I noticed that one of your listed trained skills is
"Concentration +8"

I think this skill is a vestige from 3.5 rules. Do you mean Spellcraft?
If that is the case it would be Spellcraft +5 (+1INT +1rank +3class).

I know +5 is not quite as good as +8 when spellcasting, but Spellcraft has more uses than the old skill Concentration (such as identifying magic etc.. ).

I know spellcraft and learning are not Brankh's strong suits as a cleric. His passion, voice and zealotry should make a good complement to Cole's cooler head, skill and indomitable faith.

Let me know what you think.
