This lavishly paneled room holds three large bureaus and a few wooden chests. Esoteric symbols—all-seeing eyes, talismanic seals, and even an alphabet written in an arch for spirit communication—has been carved into the floor and walls of this chamber. A large table and two stools take up the entirety of the southern wall, stacked with weapons, gems, and a cashbox bursting with coins and scrolls.
This 20-foot-square chamber is a sort of treasure chamber for Nahum’s excommunicates, though their enthusiasm for wealth is somewhat sedated in their new cursed forms. There are three bureaus here.

Terry notices that the middle bureau contains a small arcane symbol trap. The tabletop contains an assortment of valuables: a +1 returning dagger mixed in with a half-dozen masterwork spider-leg sickles, 3 black pearls worth 500 gp each, 3 scrolls of cure moderate wounds, and 200 gp in coins.
Each of the three bereau's contains two deep drawers.
Grinner the Grippli |
Grinner checks the drawers for traps.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26
GM Tyranius |
Terry and Grinner notice no other traps than the arcane glyph on the middle bureau. Terry points it out to the remainder of the group.
Tyranius |
Deciding not to mess with the traps the group heads back out into the hallway to investigate further. Listening intently at the door doesn't give much away as the room sounds deathly silent. Though as Terry takes a step away he notices the a small bit of blood near the bottom of the door frame as his toes got into.
Grinner the Grippli |
*Ribbit* "Probably the hard way. This nightmare never seems to end."
Grinner prepares for more conflict as another opens the door.
GM Tyranius |
The furniture of this bedroom or den has been pushed to the room’s perimeter, the jumbled assortment casting strange shadows in the light of the flickering fireplace. A glittering silver circle with spidery symbols spreads out about 20 feet in diameter before a windowed alcove. The room’s closet door stands open.
A vague form huddles within the circles perimeter. As you enter the room it explodes in rage, straining against its prison as it shifts its form into nightmarish shapes: a spectral, mist-shrouded skeleton one moment and a snarling, tentacled crane the next as it batters against some unseen magical force holding it at bay.
At the outer edge of the ring lies what appears to be the corpse of a woman dressed in cult robes, her features sallow, her face contorted in a rictus of fear.
Terry PBP |
"My, my. Not at all what I expected."
Where did the blood Terry saw come from, or is it not obvious?"
Terry abruptly shuts the door and turns to his companions.
"Whadaya say we leave the nice couple alone in there and just walk across to the door over there?" As he says this he points to the door behind them.
"They say a domestic disturbance is one of the most dangerous to investigate and from what I saw there is nothing beyond the room to look at."
"Then again, I'd really hate to see that thing sprung when we were not ready for it. Buff and investigate or hoof it in the other direction?"
Mixed feelings here. Too many encounters drains the spells available, but taking the thing on intentionally beats having it freed by our buddy upstairs later.
Gerard Abrigone |
"I say we leave this thing be. Maybe one of us can keep watch as we progress so that this thing isn't freed by anyone else here. Things kept in summoning circles are best left there..."
Grinner the Grippli |
"I makes me feel a little uneasy but see the logic in your words." Grinner heads behind Terry for the other door.
GM Tyranius |
The blood seems to be coming from the female body lying near the magical circle.
Shutting the door Terry wants nothing to do with whatever was trapped within the magical circle. It seems to calm as Terry leaves the presence of the room and once again goes quiet.
Investigating the door right across the hallway shows no signs of traps. The shelves of this extravagant library are overstuffed with all manner of forbidden texts, and several desks and display stands are littered with occult relics.
Nahum’s entire childhood was spent studying in a chamber like this, and this idealized reconstruction of the library’s former grandeur is indeed impressive. There are marble busts of important figures in the Caligaro lineage and dozens of glass domes filled with religious relics even more macabre than those previously discovered in the cult’s real world library, mummified hands of saints, preserved holy vestments of forgotten cults, and occult ceremonial instruments from a hundred cultures. The shelves are overstuffed with books, but exploring the evocative titles find only a bloody script scrawling over blank pages that repeat, “You do not belong.” A moment later a nearby marble bust turns to Terry and whispers, “You must get out!”
Terry PBP |
Terry leaps a few inches into the air and his sword almost magically appears in his right hand, his left hand already beginning a shield spell before he realizes he is not under assault.
"Are you an intelligent item?"
He relaxes and languidly leans up against a nearby bookcase, his sword still out. If it answers him with more than a rote phrase, he will begin questioning it for any information it might have on this place.
GM Tyranius |
The group tries to continue communicating with the inanimate marble bust only to find it does not move or speak any more than a normal marble bust.
Gerard Abrigone |
"Have I told you all how much I hate this place? I'm starting to think we might as well just head upstairs and take on the big guy. Everything down here is just a distraction, it seems."

Grimnir's wounded stone servant tries to sink into the stone floor...and safety.

Grinner the Grippli |
I think Gerard made the concentration check (assuming he uses a move action before to reduce the difficulty for psychic spells) as he got 21, and the DC is 20 (10 + 4 (spell level) + 6 (half of 13 ongoing damage)).
GM Tyranius |
The group grabs ahold of each other as Gerard opens a small tear in space and time. the group falls through instantaneously just as the hungry pit begins to contract once again.
Reappearing up above behind Grinner the spell spits you back out. Terry and Gerard breathe heavily as they nearly lost their lives. For about another minute the pit continues to grind and chew before coming still. The boards form back up to join together making a solid floor once more.

I think Grinner will stay on any climbable wall from now on when venturing into new areas. If a DC 25 Climb check (his take 10, which he can always do even in combat due to his Climb speed) is too low for a wall then he'll hop off.
Terry PBP |
"Yea, you think he cast that thing or do you think that was set up as a trap a while ago? Either way, I've had enough of this too. I think we should finish checking the room out and then pay him a visit upstairs."

Terry pops himself with the wand of infernal healing. Even though Grimnir healed him up, Terry wants to keep an Infernal Healing going for now. Too many nasty surprises. He also recovers the Shocking Grasp spell with an Arcane Pool and puts on his lesser talisman of danger sense.
