Hey Trex! Thanks for the PM. My schedule on this deployment seems less crazy than I expected, so I should be able to start on time.
And hello Bishop! I just played Aeris in the Fabric of Reality game you ran, nice to be on this side of the table with you.

GMTrex |

Sounds good!

![]() |

Hey! It's funny I wonder how many characters I've seen in the last 8 years have the same player and I didn't know it. I'm looking forward to it.
A quick word on Bishop for everyone. He's a standard issue archery ranger. Bishop has pretty normal damage output, but his AC sucks. His animal companion is a bit beefier (not Hunter level, but up there.) Timber has enough tricks to make him a skilled flanker and good tank.

![]() |

Well, as a melee inquisitor with a small stack of teamwork feats, Terrill is very happy to have a flanking buddy! As he's reached higher levels, he tends to use his judgments to tank up, boosting AC and saves, and bane his weapon and get in as many attacks as he can (helping that out with boots of speed). His dimensional hop ability lets him get into flank pretty safely, so Timber won't have to do all the dangerous movement through combat.

GMTrex |

Skybek's Liberty's Edge as well... is Faeron, too? That'd be the whole party then.
Speaking of, we're at APL 10 at the moment. We need Skybek to be 8th and Faeron 10th to stay in high-tier, which I'd really like to do. Bishop, do you know what their status is?
Edit: got ahead of myself. Looking at the tracker, Bill got Skybek all the way up to 9th! So we're good then. Faeron can be 9th or 10th.

![]() |

No worries, those updates on the tracker are from today. Faerun is 10.
-Posted with Wayfinder

GMTrex |

Perfect. APL 9.8 rounds to 10, so high tier!
*evil grin*

![]() |

What tracker are you guys referring to? Sounds like you might all play PFS together a lot, that's great.
And a whole party of Liberty's Edge would be a dream for Terrill!

![]() |

I have a google spreadsheet that shows the PFS name, number, Core status, Faction, and XP of all the characters in the group that we play with face to face. Makes life a LOT easier when planning face to face games and trying to figure who plays which character.
Faeron is currently Osirian... so I'm not sure if Zac will just go Soveeign Court or not.

GMTrex |

Oops, forgot to do real life introductions.
Terrill, these folks are part of my (first) home group. Bishop introduced me to Pathfinder, and tabletop RPGs altogether, back in 2010. I think that was Zac's first game too if I recall correctly, though he was playing Thighbite and Faeron he created later.
Chris (Bishop) and Mike (Val) have been playing together for more decades than I've been alive. Bill (Skybek) is an old friend of Mike's, and subsequently a good friend of ours. Bill is now VC for Vermont/New Hampshire, with Chris as his VL.
Everybody else, Terrill here is also named Chris, and I've never met him in person but I've done a bunch of PbP games with him and he's pretty awesome. I think he'll make a fun addition to the group!

Dungeon Master S |

A friend of Trex's is a friend of mine. I'm really looking forward to this game. As Bishop pushes level 12, it's time to give him more personality, so this is likely a good game for it.

![]() |

That's cool, nice to join the fold! Most of my family is in Boston, and I'm there a couple of times a year, maybe I'll sneak up to New Hampshire for some PFS some time! Do you guys play at a FLGS somewhere?
As for my gaming history, since I got a bit of yours - my big brother introduced me to D&D right around 1980 and I played devotedly for 20 years or so. Lost touch with any regular gaming for a few years there, picked up Pathfinder about 4 years ago - and have passed it on to my son! He's at Pacificon, near San Francisco, this weekend, while I'm on travel for work - so it's nice to have some PbP to turn to.

![]() |

Nice!
I don't have the bandwidth for a lot of FLGS games, though I may start doing a monthly one in Manchester, NH. I DO, however, try to hit one convention each quarter. OGC is in Southern NH in June, and TotalCon is close to Boston around February.

![]() |

Welcome, Terrill! Delighted to have you join us. Let us know if you are coming to Boston any time. Many of us play at TotalCon in Mansfield MA on the weekend of February 18-21. It would be awesome to roll some dice with you in person!

Thanks for the welcome, Skybek. I may have to plan a trip to coincide with TotalCon, haven't really done the Con scene in that part of the country.
Terrill's spells tend to focus on buffing himself for combat, either offensively or defensively, with the occasional dip into blistering invective. Because he's a spontaneous caster, I don't get to tweak my spell list, but I tend to have more slots than I use, so I'm happy to cast on others when needed. Here are his spells known:
. . 4th (1/day)—forceful strike (DC 17), stoneskin
. . 3rd (4/day)—dispel magic, heroism, greater magic weapon, searing light
. . 2nd (5/day)—blistering invective[UC] (DC 15), brow gasher[UC], invisibility, litany of defense[UC], communal protection from evil[UC], lesser restoration, tongues, weapon of awe[APG] (DC 15)
. . 1st (6/day)—bless, cure light wounds, divine favor, ear-piercing scream[UM] (DC 14), expeditious retreat, litany of sloth[UC], shield of faith, unerring weapon[UC]
. . 0 (at will)—acid splash, daze (DC 13), detect magic, guidance, light, read magic
He casts greater magic weapon on his sword each day (making it +2, rather than +1, and still keen), and doesn't mind sharing that spell around either, since it lasts for 10 hours.

Hey everyone, just wanted to give you a quick heads up. Game day starts on a Saturday. Anyone who's played with me knows that I post 7 days per week, and check my games multiple times per day.
That being said, the Game Day starts the day I finish a 200 mile relay race. While I only run about 20 miles of it in bursts, I'll be mostly MIA that day. So, I'll be around with my normal regularity, just not likely until that night. So, don't worry, I didn't go missing, I'm just either running or unconscious. I promise. :-)

GMTrex |

If you're going with a revive spell, go with breath of life. It has extreme limitations, yes, but can happen mid-battle and saves the subject from those pesky negative levels. Additionally, you don't have to carry around (or spend) the 5000gp material component.
(Same goes for Terrill -- don't forget the material component for stoneskin!)

GMTrex |

Also, so that I can run a better game, if everyone could please provide me with as much character background as you can--including any near-TPK's this character has had previously.

Bishop was nearly a simple ranger in Andoran before a teenage wanderlust struck him. He has respect for Erastil, but thinks that it's time to see the world and explore. The Pathfinder society opened him up to worlds he never knew. It also opened him up to evils that shocked him. Having grown up in Andoran the notion of slavery and tyranny are abhorrent to him.
He's had a reasonably successful career as a Pathfinder, with only two near death experiences. He was once sent to a wedding of all things that went HORRIBLY wrong, and made a stand against shadow demons under the wedding tent. A very strange experience. Recently he (was Val there) was sent to Numenera to uncover some lost bit of alien magic... The "golems" inside nearly slaughtered the entire party. The mission was his only failure though he escaped with his life.

Growing up in the foothills of the World's Edge Mountains, Skybek Odeon is the eldest son of a Hybek Odeon , the prestigious dwarven clock maker of Maheto. Just outside of the walls of the Taldan city, young Skybek grew up in his father’s workshop. Upon turning of age, Skybek attended Stonegate, a prestigious school for dwarves in Maheto where he studied, religion, arcana, planes, politics and history.
While attending school, his parents were tragically killed by a raiding band of Frost Giants. Skybek’s life fell to hardship and he dropped out of school and began taking to drink to drown his sorrows. At a particular low point in his life, he was adopted by Kovnick Jarvis, one of the Starstone Brewers. Teachinig him the freedom loving tenents of Cayden Cailean, Skybek took to a life of travel and dedicated himself to giving back to the world by making ale and sharing it with the world.
One day, during one of his pub crawls through Absalom, he befriended a Pathfinder Venture Captain dressed as a beggar, who persuaded him to join the Pathfinder Society. He has since dedicated his life to freeing captives and supporting his pathfinder colleagues through Cayden Cailean’s goodness.
Highlights of his Pathfinder Society adventures include:
• Thornkeep: The Accursed Halls
• Thornkeep: The Forgotten Laboratory
• The Feast of Ravenmoor
• #3-25 Storming the Diamond Gate - Skybek ventured into the Hao Jin Tapestry with his companions, Mikhare, Halbarad of Arbor, and Muteki Yoshima to battle Aspis Agents and secure the Diamond Gate within the tapestry. Skybek nearly died from a poisonous spider bite.
• #5-04The Stolen Heir - Journeying to Andoran, Skybek with Frag the Fierce, Ober, Mithradaties, Trifle, Saki, and Kirael rescued Thalia Andares from her scheming father’s work and secured the alliance of funds to help with the Mendevian Crusades.
• #3-08 Among the Gods - Skybek traveled with Rigel Jacobim, Idgethun, Munk Het, Trifle Nik Baru, and T’orca to a mountaintop mausoleum known as Antios’s Crown. Together they took down Harvestmaster Quint to remove the Zyphen threat.
• #5-07 Port Godless
• #6-07 Valley of the Veiled Flame - Skybek journeyed to the Zho Mountains in Qadira with Harnac, Senzo, Orryn and T’Orca to rescue pathfinders and the entire village of Crystalcrag from the evil Efreet tyrant, Tygora. Near death against Tygora, Skybek’s use of fly on Harnac saved the day.

• #5-02 The Wardstone Patrol
• #6-09 By Way of Bloodcove
• Rise of the Runelords: Hook Mountain Massacre

Terrill is a bit different from your typical inquisitor. He’s not so much about rooting out enemies of the faith as living Desna’s teachings the way he sees fit. Here’s how he tends to tell the tale:
“I’m originally from Andoran, where you’d think it would be pretty accepted to work for freedom. But it turns out I had a different sense of what that means than my fellows. I started my training to join the clergy of Desna, thinking I’d be working for freedom for all. Well, to make a long story a little less long – a friend of mine was arrested and imprisoned for something he didn’t do. I knew, absolutely knew, that he wasn’t guilty, and I couldn’t believe that Desna wanted him locked up. I broke him out of jail – didn’t kill anyone, though I might have hurt a couple of folks – and helped him get out of the country.”
”Pretty soon after, I had to get out of the country myself. My brothers and sisters in the worship of Mother Moon believed enough in freedom to give me a few minutes’ warning that the city guard were coming for me, but they didn’t believe enough to face up to the authorities and protect me. So I grabbed what I could and hit the road, determined to live Desna’s way as I see it.”
He ended up in Absalom and joined the Society, finding kindred spirits who opposed slavery and would fight it wherever they could. Since then he’s traveled widely, experiencing wonder and peril in the service of freedom. He has fought demons in the defense of Nerosyan, been blinded in the land of Shadow, fought off a siege by the Aspis Consortium and sought pieces of the fabled Sky Key. Most recently, he worked with a team of other veteran Pathfinders to recover a series of enchanted rings, carrying magical echoes of the Everwar. He watched his friend Desmond die due to recklessness in battle, not long after Terrill nearly did the same – but Terrill still charges into the fight, trusting in Desna’s fortune to win the day.

So Faeron, what happened to the Gunslinger that prompted the rebuild? (which I think is hilarious because of how many iterations of the character you've had to have.)

![]() |

The Signature Deed change and removal of no misfire chance at level 13 meant all you get for staying in the class past 5 was a +1 to damage and ac every 4 levels or so. If I wanted that, I'd have played a fighter. (Most of the deeds you get after level 5 and before 15, especially for pistoleers, are either almost never worth using, or are strictly worse than what you can already do with all the typical ranged character feets.) Previously, those two things were good enough that I'd put up with the complete lack of tactical variety or out of combat options. Now it just seems boring with no upside. I completely agree the Signature Deed + Up Close and Deadly combo had to go, I just wish they had accomplished that in some other way that still left Signature Deed as a cool level 11 boost.
The also very necessary double-barreled pistol nerf conveniently provided a rebuild of any/all gunslinger levels. Hopefully, now I can shoot things almost as hard, and get a bunch of rogue-lite stuff, too.

GMTrex |

We're all set to get started tomorrow -- I just need a bit of background from Faeron at some point soon-ish.

![]() |

Faeron grew up in Osirion, the child of treasure hunters. From a young age, he would travel with expeditions, helping out around camp, and often serving as a lookout. After a cave in within an ancient tomb fatally ended one such trip, an orphaned Faeron set off on his own. He soon crossed paths with an aging gunslinger. Intrigued by this strange, powerful technology, Faeron spent the next decade training as his apprentice, while the two traveled far and wide as caravan guards. Eventually, with his mentor ready to settle into retirement, Faeron again found himself alone and without course. He happened to be near Absalom at a time while the Pathfinder Society was recruiting heavily, and joining up seemed like a natural use for his skill set.

GMTrex |

Awesome, thanks everybody. Let's get started!

Just finished my last leg. Exhausted. Just ran 5.7 in sweltering heat. I kinda want to die right now. It'll be a bit

Congratulations! Dying is not recommended though.

GM Harpwizard |

I'm back from the New Hampshire Highland Games and Festival, a great four day Scottish party down in Lincoln, NH. I have been organizing and running the harp events since Thursday. I've been playing harp in lots of concerts and with ensembles. I have also been going to bed around 2 am fo the last few nights. Forgive Skybek's vacant entry. Hopefully he will wake up soon!

GMTrex |

Sounds fun! And no problem, haha.

GMTrex |

Best explanation I could think of that prevents 40-odd revelers from immediately turning on Timber in a desperate attempt to save their lives.

GMTrex |

By the way, Bishop, I think you did your ranger math wrong.
"In addition, at each such interval, the bonus against any one favored enemy (including the one just selected, if so desired) increases by +2."
Each time you select a new Favored, you choose one and only one type whose bonus goes up by +2. So if humanoid (human) is +6, construct cannot be +4 at 11th level.

GMTrex |

I figured :)

GMTrex |

Oops -- looks like I'm still missing background for Val. Just a quick note is fine.
Thanks!

GMTrex |

Holy Moley!
I come upon the boards this afternoon and it looks like Faeron and Val are dead! What am I to do?! I have one Breath of Life to help help perhaps one person, but without a map, I'm not even sure where everyone is located. We also have a terror who will likely finish the rest of us off in just a moment. Suggestions? Should I fight or should I heal?

![]() |

I wish I knew what to tell you, Skybek. It's a rough moment. Terrill may be able to finish it off, especially with a bunch of arrows from Bishop, but he's one missed save away from joining the list of the dead, I'm thinking.
As far as location, everyone but Terrill should be fairly close together, or at least close enough for Skybek to move and cast breath of life. That may not work, though, because the deaths weren't caused by hit point damage, they were caused by the spell weird, which Trex helpfully told us.
So if you can't help anyone by healing (and Terrill is not in immediate need of it, yet), I say we go down fighting!

GMTrex |

Interestingly, there are no bodies for Skybek to cast breath of life on. He made the right choice anyway.

GMTrex |

Just for fun, here are some of the stats on that thing:
Advanced Primordial Demon
CR 14
AC 29
HP 199
F +11, R +14, W +15
Incorporeal, immune electricy/poison, resist 10 acid/cold/fire
SR 22
BAB +19
CMB +29
CMD 44
Space 15ft, Reach 30ft
4 Tentacles, +26 each
Weird 1/day, DC 23, a bunch of other SLAs
Psychic Implosion ability (12d6 dmg, DC 23 Will for half)
Telepathy 100ft
Tongues (constant)
Blind-fight, Bleeding Critical, Blinding Critical, Sickening Critical
A whole lot of great skills but why would I ever use them

GMTrex |

:)
This scenario gets a lot of high marks for that encounter. It's a big challenge for optimized PCs with significant risk of death, and the death feels real as far as the party knows. And then the GM can just grin and tell everyone they're still alive after all.
Plus, there's a boon if you beat it and/or survive ten rounds in the ring.
