"The one who did this, did you kill him already?"

"Yes," Brevon replies gravely. "Treacherous until the end. Elriel delivered him to the next life. Perhaps he'll find redemption there." He thinks about the altar of human bodies. "Perhaps not."

The note
"Irabeth, this is your family's weapon? Is the note true, and you sold it? Could you explain its significance to you?" If there's an earlier story here, Brevon missed it.

Rukzha:
Staunton probably refers to Staunton Vhane, referred by Irabeth HERE. You know no new information. You also remembers nothing about Ulkreths.

Irabeth looks at you with a mixture of shame and embarrassment. "Yes, it is true... I indeed sold my father's sword to this man, Kandro Nyserian, but by that time I had no clue about his involvement with the cultists. My reason was quite particular and I'd like to leave the explanation to another moment if you think you really need to know about it. I though this sword was lost when my crusaders reported it was completely raised after the attack." She gave the sword a few swings before eyeing you. "So, shall we continue? I believe we are in the middle of a high risk mission..."

"Well, it's nice that we found it. You can indeed tell us the story later, though it would be nice to know if the sword has any special abilities so we can account for them in battle. Let's all go together so we don't end up in a situation like the last battle where some people couldn't reach because they were too far back. Just the door going up left to explore now." Rukzha says and starts moving towards the door, though slowly so as to let the others pass her and take the lead. She has seen the commander help in battle so she trusts her and doesn't care if she gambled away her father's sword or whatever happened.

After Rukzha spells Kai, he replies, "Hmmm, Right, well, I'm just gonna call you Tattoos, it suits you better. Thanks for the spell, I owe you one Tatts."

If Rukzha protests the nickname, Kai will probably laugh.

At the Altar

"Perhaps not." Kai murmurs back to the blonde man.

He draws his small knife and attempts to separate Thilde's arm from the statue. Once the grisly work is done, he'll tear some cloth from his robes and wrap it up.

"She was my friend." Kai said to Brevon simply, as if it were as much explanation as anyone could need.

He stows the arm in his Haversack and murmurs a prayer over it. He rises and stands with feet shoulder width apart and slows his breathing and a barely audible crack can be heard and his skin spurts fine scaly growths across its surface.

Casting Barkskin. Duration 40 min.

"Okay I'm ready to go. I'll take up the rear guard, don't want anything sneaky getting the drop on us. I'm fast as well. So I'll be ready to support the front line in a hurry."

Satisfied with Irabeth's answer and a promise of a later story, Elriel nodded.

He turned to Kai, "OK, your being in the back makes sense. Let's be off then."

Irabeth nods to Rukzha while following Elriel towards the last door. "My father's sword is specially suitable to slay evil outsiders." It is a +1 evil outsider bane longsword.

Elriel reaches for the locked door and fails in his first attempt to unlock it, finding it is also barred from inside. Deciding to take his time, he manages to open it after trying for about one minute. Along one wall of this long room stands a smashed sideboard. A stone staircase leads upstairs. In the middle of the room Elriel notices four dretches, ready and waiting to fight you... they were not surprised by your appearance.

Kai leaped at the mere sign of danger.

He rushed in with a battlecry, grabbing his Monk's Spade and struck the first demon Elriel had cut, hoping to knock it down before it realized what was happening.

Kai, you won't be able to charge because you act before Elriel so you'd not have a clear charge line.

Kai moves quickly and strikes a powerful blow against one of the demons and Elriel is finishes the demon soon after. Two of the other demons focuses their attacks on Elriel with various degrees of success... the first one overextends and overexerts itself, being clearly exhausted by such disastrous attack and misses the other attacks as well. The second one manages to slash Elriel in his elbow but fails to continue to inflict any damage.

The last demon cackles and burps, filling the room with a nauseating cloud... Arrika, Irabeth, and Rukzha can't hold their meager breakfast with such stomach distress.

All three of them are nauseated (limited to only a single move action) until they leave the cloud and 1d4+1 rounds thereafter. The cloud also works as a normal fog effect concerning line of sight and partial/total concealment.

Instead of Brevon heading up recklessly in front it might be a good idea to put up some magical protection. We got the wand of protection from evil. I suggest we put up one on each of you frontliners. It offers the same kind of protection as the ring and the cloak so maybe me and Arrika can carry those?"

We got two cloaks and two rings. One cloak isn't claimed actually. I suggest to cast protection from evil on Elriel/Brevon/Kai and maybe Kelumarion and let Rukzha/Arrika have the items.

Here is where the mechanics of the game gets really weird. There isn't actually space for me to move up. However it would make a lot of sense to move forward to cast only to step back when the others come, but that doesn't work within the rules either. I should also be able to cast untargeted stuff like glitterdust based on what the others are saying, even if I can't see up properly. Though I could probably see along the arrow if I'm right behind Kai, so how about we just go with that?

"Lot's of them up ahead you say? Let's see what we can do to even the odds. They won't be able to fight very well if they are blind."

Soon after glittering dust falls down in the corridor up ahead. I hope I manage to hit a lot of them. It's a bit hard to see with so many people up ahead.

The room explodes in glittering dust covering the half of the defenders and also blinding two of them (those with yellow border are shining and those completely yellow are also blinded). Elriel jumps over the rail and drops one of the tieflings in one single and fluid move, while Kai moves forward and slashes another tiefling in half with his spade. Irabeth then moves past Kai and finishes it another foe, making an opening in the middle of the corridor.

Can Arrika see over the stair railing from behind Brevon? I'm assuming she can get at least some line of sight/effect - if not, let me know and I'll revise.

Stumbling up the stairs to where Brevon stands, Arrika hears Rukzha's call about evening the odds - and when she gets to where she can peek between and around the stair rails, she sees Rukzha's work has already been effective. Two of them grope blindly, the gold dust in their eyes obscuring their vision...but it won't last forever. Two already shook it off, and the others might at any moment. We've got to keep more of them out of the fight, give us a chance to take advantage of their blindness... And then, Arrika has an idea.

In her mind, the chasm that had opened at her feet at the Armasse celebrations splits once again, with a crack that makes her mind's ears ring. That maw had been opened by the malice and rot of the Abyss...but Arrika drew on purer powers. Her mind coiling like a spring ready to jump, she focuses on the floor at her eye level, supporting the three tieflings her half-elven ally faces...

Elriel, get away from them! The energy building in her mind reaches a peak, and the floor begins to rumble ever so slightly. At the last possible moment, she releases her focus in a burst that sets stars off behind her eyes, wishing with all her might for the floor to crumble as the Arnasse festival ground had...

Ready a standard action to cast create pit beneath T2, T4, and T5 as soon as Elriel gets out of the casting area (marked in orange). DC15 Reflex save to jump to safety in the nearest safe space. Now might be a good time to use Acrobatics, Elriel, if you don't want to be caught on the other side of it. ;)

I figured the stair rails would give cover and possibly prevent an AoO, but if you want it, here's a concentration check to cast defensively, DC19: 1d20 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 3 = 17 Eww. So if she is threatened, she'll lose the spell.

He'd passed subtle gifts to his caller, skills of finesse and esoteric nuance...but Kelumarion far preferred a more direct approach. Barreling up the staircase, he shoves past Brevon and Kai to face off against the tieflings, using the blinding of Rukzha's conjured gold dust against them.

Move up stairs, standard to bite attack. I didn't see Arrika's or Kelumarion's pawn on the board, so the gold starburst is Kelumarion and the silver lightning bolt is Arrika.

Arikka gets ready to cast her spell while Kelumarion leaps forward and almost drops one of the demons, biting him on his leg. Brevon dashes with his scimitar cutting two foes in only one fluid attack, almost finishing them.

Caught between a killing field, the tieflings gang upon Elriel but the deft man easily dodges all the attacks with grace, even with two of them flanking him! On the other side, Irabeth is attacked by the other two cultists. One of them misses her entirely while cleaning his eyes but the other delivers a glancing blow. Meanwhile, the dretch retreats to a corner, cowering in fear.

The scar on her neck contracts painfully as her powers are once again awoken. "Let's try to get in there to stop them. I'll help clear the way." She says in a pained voice as she directs the powerful forces towards the tiefling directly blocking the doorway.

@Rukzha: The one that hit Irabeth wasn't the blinded one, it was #8.

Rukzha successfully overwhelms the tiefling's mind and the wounded creature falls to the ground unconscious and Elriel stabs through another cultist's nape, killing him instantly. As Elriel steps aside, A 20 feet pit appears in the middle of the corridor, dragging another tiefling with him, killing him when he hits the bottom.

Kai moves inside the northeast room and finds six cultists of Deskari, armed with scythes. Loosing no time, the monk grabs one of them limiting his movements. Irabeth continues to fight the other tieflings but unfortunately misses her target... differently than Kelumarion that finishes her foe before stepping forward and dropping yet another opponent. With no enemy to fight, Brevon also moves towards the room with the cultists, slashing him in his guts.

The sole remaining tiefling sidesteps before giving Elriel a glancing blow, while the grappled cultist tries futilely to free himself. Another cultist reaches Kai and strikes him with his wicked blade. The two cultists remaining back try to pressure their will against Brevon's will, yelling "DROP!" and unfortunately Brevon is overwhelmed and drops his sacred sword! The two remaining cultists attack Brevon with no effect against his armor.

From the west, another door is opened and from it emerges a goat-headed humanoid covered in a mangy gray hide that only partly covers its gaunt but muscled frame. It carries a halberd with which he deftly strikes Elriel. It looks at the tiefling besides him and orders, with a harsh voice. "Inch’in yes spasum? Gnal depi aerie!"

Meanwhile, the dretch moves towards the sleeping tiefling and wakes him up.

Surrounded by a pit and a very slippery floor, the half-elf has a brief break as the horny demon backs away.

Not wanting to try his luck, he carefully drops his shortswords and takes his shortbow out.

He remembered Rukzha's comment on that special arrow. Now was a good time to try it, before the demon got away and called for reinforcements.

He quickly sighted and released. The arrow sped and savagely pierced the schir. "Not so fast, horny. We just got started here."

In a rage, Brevon continues his attempt to power through the mass of bodies before him, now using his shield as a weapon and slamming it forcefully into the nearby tieflings.

Scimitar's still lying on the ground :(. I think this is a legit move?

You actually get +3 extra damage from using both hands to bash with the shield(+1str, +2pa) since it counts as a one handed weapon instead of a light one. Note that at this point you could just have picked up the scimitar as a move action and used that. It won't provoke against blind people and cleave is a standard action.

Could I get some more info on that knowledge check? @Elriel:Did you forget favored enemy bonus?

Rukzha is annoyed to see her power fail to bring the demon down. Her hearts stops for a moment as it's filthy halberd sails towards the half-elf, but luckily the attack misses.

Her mind churns as she quickly tries to figure out what's the best course of action. Suddenly she gets an idea and springs up the stairs, but not towards the demon, but rather away from it. The witch does turn against it though and says at barely a whisper. "Oh no, you aren't getting away, come here instead." Before her voice changes to the normal guttural chant of her spellcasting.

Command on the demon DC 16 vs will to come towards Rukzha. Hopefully it'll fall into the pit...
