Elriel followed the retreating cultist and yelled at Brevon, "Let's take them down one at a time."

His sword however got caught on the man's armor and barely scratched him.

Rukzha storms into the room and is not surprised to see yet another horrific scene, though she doesn't find it any less disgusting or twisted. Shouldering her way past Irabeth to see Brevon, Elriel, and Kelumarion engaging the cultist, Arrika rushes forward to join them, angling her long spear to join in the fray.

Double move.

Current Map | Loot | Critical-Fumble Generator

@Elriel: Actually the rules are a bit more simpler. You roll only once for the entire movement. Since there are two enemies at once, you'll take the highest of their CMD (probably equal here) and an additional +2 since there are an additional enemy.

@Arrika: Yeah, not going to happen lol.

Rukzha tries to pressure her mind against one of the cultists but the man stays strong, unbowed by her will. Kelumarion, Elriel, and Brevon move forward quickly, intending to finish the cultists once and for all but all of them miss their targets... was this just bad luck or some obscure and profane power emanating from the hideous altar?

Using their scythe to protect themselves, both the cultists use their free hand to make a hand gesture and soon after attempts to touch Kelumarion and Elriel... the cat dodges in time but Elriel isn't fast enough. A flash of chaotic demons grinning and running around him disorients the him (During your next round, whenever you roll a d20, roll twice and take the worst). Irabeth moves forward but isn't able to strike thanks to the crowded place.

From behind, you hear the sound of a door being opened and a deformed tiefling appears with four horns, blackish skin and cloven feet, quickly throwing what appears to be a jar at Arrika. The jar explodes, engulfing all of you and putting Arrika on fire (Requires a full-round action and a successful DC 14 Refle save to extinguish the flames, otherwise takes 1d6 fire damage). Brevon, Elriel, and Irabeth are able to avoid most of it but one of the cultists and Kelumarion aren't so lucky. "Burn, burn... BURN! Finish them... Our Crawling Lord will be pleased!"

If Rukzha's slumber fails:

With so many fires to put out, Brevon isn't sure where to start. The girl on fire seems most urgent. "Irabeth, help the girl!" he calls as he rushes past the burning mage. He remembers his own hair burning not so long ago. Fire licks at his armor as he marches toward the tiefling, but he has a fire of his own. It starts inside him, flickering outward toward his outstretched hand and the holy blade he wields. The scimitar begins to shine brighter than any flame, his voice burning across his lips. "My heart becomes like a burning fire shut up in my bones. I am wearing of holding it. Share this burden with me, demon."

As the burning liquid splashes against her gut, Arrika can't help but stand and stare for a moment...as the nightmare that's played in her mind most nights for the past ten years comes to life. Shocked silence at first - and then a bloodcurdling, panicked scream, and another. Frantically, she begins to beat at the red-and-orange tongues starting to lick at her clothes and hair, the fight all but forgotten as she battles her worst fear. Her screams turn to whimpers as she just manages to beat out the flames before they truly catch and penetrate deeper through the layers of metal and cloth, and her hands tighten to a white-knuckle grip on her spear, not seeming to notice the tears streaming down her face.

The tiefling succumbs to Rukzha's mysterious magic and falls into the ground. Arrika tries to put the fire down without success and it continues to burn her flesh. Enraged, Kelumarion bites and claws at the cultist in front of him, hitting both claws and almost finishing the maddened fanatic. Flanking the other cultist, Brevon and Elriel attack but the man manages to defend both attacks, both deflected by an unholy energy surrounding him.

The critically wounded cultist manages to heal himself without opening his guard to Kelumarion's attacks and the other one, seeing himself surrounded, starts a slow guarded retreat, keeping his guard high. But then, through the pain of cuts, bruises, and the fire in her flesh, another fire blazes forth - but this one is different. Not destroying, not consuming...but warming, illuminating, creating. The fire of the oven, not the fire of the pyre...

Her pain diminishes even as she watches the alchemist's flames spread further, and in a haze of confusion and dread, she realizes Brevon's hand is on her arm, and both are enveloped in a glimmer of light. "You think demons are powerful? Inventive? Cruel? The problem with demons is they destroy either the mind or the body way to quickly. My patron would have such a great time with you, undoing everything you are and making you really feel it... If I let them, of course..." She lets the tiefling's mind do part of the work for her. She's sure he can imagine many horrible things being done to him, given those he serve.

Now I realize that I might have been even more confusing than before! It is a well hidden secret door but might still be opened with a Disable Device check. The only odd thing about it is an unusual glow.

The tiefling awakes just before Elriel tried to awake him. His eyes darted around and he tried to free his hands and feet before he noticed he was tied up.

He remains quiet for a couple seconds, perhaps deciding what to do. Pressured by Rukzha, he seems to have made his mind. "Alright, lets not get hasty... I'll tell ye what you want..." The tiefling tries to install in you a feeling that you are under control before screaming with all his strength "INTRUDEEERRRSSS!"

With a successful DC 18 Sense Motive check, you are able to notice his intention and do something before he screams.

Elriel cursed as the tiefling screamed. His scream was cut short by a gurgling sound as the rogue cut his throat.

Disgusted by the whole ordeal, Elriel turns to the door. "No traps and...I think I can open it..."

Brevon sees the tiefling open its mouth to scream. He punches it hard, right on the jaw, with his gauntlet to stifle the scream.

Phew. Does this work? I wrapped the rope around his mouth to prevent that, but I guess he was determined :).

Brevon manages to punch the tiefling before he screams and soon after Elriel slits his throat since he was clearly trying to scream again. Meanwhile, Irabeth is gazing at the defiled altar made of humanoid limbs. "There is no end to the depravity of the demons..."

After a minute or two Elriel is able to open the secret door, revealing a small chamber free of dust. A holy symbol of Iomedae hangs unmolested on the wall above a weapon rack filled with swords, crossbows, and spears. Three wooden dummies wear pristine suits of armor. A shelf holds several leather quivers, each stamped with a golden sun. Two silver shields hang from pegs on the wall. Despite all this, another thing gets your attention... a man lays unconscious into the middle of the room.

Upon closer inspection you notice what appears to be more of a boy than a man, still barely needing to shave. His sheer height and body mass makes him seem a little older than he is, but not much. He hasn't got very many clothes, but all are loose fitting and not particularly stylish, opting for browns and greys over colorful garments. He is beaten and weakened with clear signs of starvation, and an empty waterskin besides him suggests he is also out of water. You also find a couple monastic weapons in his person and around him.

The weapon rack contains three cold iron longswords, two cold iron shortswords, two heavy crossbows, a composite longbow (+2 Str), a masterwork cold iron heavy mace, two cold iron longspears, 50 cold iron crossbow bolts, 100 cold iron arrows, a +1 longsword, 5 +1 holy arrows, and an arrow of evil outsider slaying.

The armor dummies hold two sets of masterwork chainmail and a +1 breastplate emblazoned with Iomedae's holy symbol.

The two heavy steel shields are both marked with the holy symbol of Iomedae. One is a masterwork shield, and the other is a +1 blinding shield.

Elriel let out another soft whistle as he takes in all the weapons and armor arrayed on display.

He turns to Irabeth, "This must be what you were talking about. These weapons could outfit a decent-sized patrol."

Before taking a closer look, the boy on the floor called his attention. The half-elf looked at Brevon, "He sure does look like a prisoner but you can never know with the demon's guile. Can you... check to make sure his heart harbors no evil intent."

Elriel knelt down next to the boy and offered his waterskin. "Here, drink some. I think we're on the same side of this wretched war. How long have you been here?"

When the door opened, the boy scrabbled to the corner, trying to maintain a defensive posture and keeping as small a profile as possible. However, upon seeing that the group were in fact adventurers and not demons, he sagged a bit in relief.

It's clear by his face and shakiness that the wretch wanted to greedily reach out and snatch the canteen of water, but he composes himself as best he can, though with a slight tremble he responds, "I-I'm not sure. Four days? Five?" He takes the water deliberately, grasping on to it as if savoring the experience, takes a sip, and cracks a sad grin. He continues "There were f-four of us... three adventurers I f-fought alongside. We were enjoying the f-festivities and then... you know what happened. Welcome aboard, Kai!

Brevon freezes as the young man scrambles away into the corner. Like a frightened wolf. Does he wield claws?

Gently, Brevon passes his hand through the air in a sign of passivity and goodwill, though as he does he feels the air for tell-tale signs of evil. Detect evil. Sensing none, it becomes clear that the man is a refugee of the attack.

"Well, young man, we haven't seen any signs of your friends." He says with as friendly a tone and smile as he can muster. "No doubt they've made it safe and sound back to camp." He has no idea if this is the case, but no reason to worry the boy. "There are many survivors, come together now to fight back and reclaim Kenabres. Keep your chin up--the sun will rise tomorrow."

Examining the impressive cache of weapons, Brevon's eyes are drawn to a shield bearing the Iomedaean sunburst. It catches the light from his scimitar, reflecting it radiantly. His blood-smeared, tired face contrasts sharply reflected in its shining surface, and he quickly lifts it aside to avoid seeing himself. "This is a true treasure," he says, strapping the shield to his arm and testing its weight.

Any objections to Brevon claiming the +1 shield of blinding? I don't believe anyone else could use it.

The boy's expression changes a bit, seeming somewhat hopeful at both men's reassurances. He receives the bread gratefully and eats it while being spoken to.

Frowning he replied, "I... I'm actually not sure about this place at all. It's bbeen so long, I'm not sure how helpful it will be. We were m-mostly fighting with what l-looked like their infantry. Grunts. "

He takes an assessing look at each member of the group. He takes a quick mental catalogue of each one,

This man is Half Elf, I hadn't noticed before! He looks sharp in contrast to his reflexive compassion.

A warrior of the Dawnflower. Eyes sunken. He's fought for many years, a crusader perhaps?

A the dark-skinned girl, Kellid perhaps? A sorcerer or shaman of a sort? Her dress resembles the barbarian tribes. Is that a jungle cat following her?

What is beyond that mask I wonder? Why would a member of The Heralds wear such a tribal fetish? She's a woman for certain... But anyway. Clearly very devout follower.

They were good people, he decided. Strange and wonderful, and probably led interesting lives. Perhaps they could help him find his previous companions. Provided they survived the next few hours.

Then he introduces himself, "Thank you for r-rescuing me. Somehow I knew the God's would not let me die alone in here. I am Kai Dries. I am a monk and Irori guides my path."

Is there anything that Kai might know? I figure he may know the names of some species of demon that stormed the place, but I don't know how useful it could be.

Also, sorry if I get your descriptions wrong, this is just from what I remember so far. Please correct me if you feel like I'm a bit off or you'd just like to illuminate your character to me a bit clearer.

Rukzha removes her mask to show of her tattooed face. She does not want to scare the stranger any more than necesarry. She keeps it around though, figuring it might become useful in a fight and it could take a bit of time off from draining magic from the scoprion. Or is it done already? 17 hours to get it all iirc

"I'm glad we were able to find you alive. You look severely weakened by the lack of food and water. I know some healing magic. Let me help you." She walks over and touches the boy.

"There were some cultists doing horrible things right outside, were you aware of that? I'm not sure what they were trying to accomplish, but it was pretty grotesque. Hopefully it's not related to what we came here for. The wardstone fragment. Apparently the demons plan to turn what once protected us against us. We have to stop that."

In spite of how large he is, Kai has a bit of a baby face, much to his chagrin. He probably looks about 18, but his face could be that of someone maybe 13-14.

Kai stands quickly in response to Breton's question.

"Yes!" Kai replies a little too eagerly to Brevon. He stumbles a bit as his head feels light and puts his hand out to balance himself, "Yes, Well, sort of able."

When Rukzha approaches, Kai really notices her hands and face are covered in tattoos and scars and tenses a bit. His broad shoulders visibly relax as she works her magic on him. "Thank you for that, Rukzha."

Still, his fatigue is easily visible as his posture sags again.

The half-elf looked in pain for some light weapons, something longer than a dagger but still nimble enough to be wielded in one hand. Unfortunately, he found nothing better than the well-made swords he already had.

He joked with the paladin, "Keep the shield, Brevon. It goes with your sun motif."

He pulled the composite bow but found it too tight for his pull. he put it down before anyone noticed that he was not strong enough for it.

He then inspected the arrows, noticing their fine qualities. he asked Rukzha or Arrika, "Can one of you please to see if any of these arrows are magical? They look awfully nice."

Rukzha scans the room for magic. "Yes, right away. Hopefully some of this proves useful. Though even if we can't use it, we should still take the nicer of the things back so others can benefit from them."

She chants and scans the room, then moves to study the arrows, sword, breastplate and shield more closely.

"This sword is magical, though it's a bit longer than your normal swords and it's sadly not cold iron, so won't be as useful against the demons. It's first rank. Those arrows are indeed magical. 5 holy ones and one of evil outsider slaying. They both seem quite useful in taking down demons. Finally this breatplate is also first rank, though I'm guessing it's too heavy for any of us to wear. That shield seems quite special. Twice per day, it can blind those around you. It doesn't differentiate friend from foe though." Elriel can probably make the save fairly regularly though

I suggest we get all the arrows and bolts as well as all the masterwork and magical items and a bow for Brevon. The arrows can be split between Brevon and Elriel perhaps? What is the +1 armor listed on Kai's sheet? Someone should cast mage armor on Kai before heading out. I can use my pearl to recover mine, though I'm not sure how many spells Arrika have left on the day.

@Rukzha: yes, you did got your XP... as you might see, there is still a long way until 5th level!

Kai:
You don't know more than the others at this moment. When the fight began, you (and your companions) had only a couple minutes in the Garrison alone before it was stormed so you only manage to explore the first floor... you know that the locked door in the middle of the map leads up to a second floor. About the demons, since you have no ranks in Knowledge (planes), you could not recognize most of them and even so, the sheer amount of them have already retreated back to the Worldwound.

"Let us inherit thine arms indeed..." As soon as Irabeth enters the room, she moves towards Kai, her eyes shining briefly with a golden light, and inspects his wounds... she then looks at her own, Brevon's and Arrika's before grabbing her holy symbol and making a quick prayer. Soon after a golden light bathes you from the ceiling, healing all your wounds. Noticing that Kai isn't completely healed yet, Irabeth takes one of the potions from the dead cultists and, after inspecting it for any foul play, gives it to him, healing the last bruises. With his wounds now healed and his hungry and thirty sated, Kai feels no more the fatigue from before.

Channel Energy - Irabeth: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 2) = 7
potion of cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Irabeth is fair half-orc with short and black hair. She wears a golden full-plate inlaid with motifs of Iomedae, a true masterpiece. She also has a red cloak and various insignias of valor and ranks among the crusaders. She carries a heavy shield and a longsword.

"Here, I believe you'll feel better now... Kai, isn't it? Right, now that we have recovered he still have a mission to finish." She looks at you briefly before leaving the tight armory. "It appears we are still unnoticed but I'm not counting on that... that bomb was pretty loud." She then turns back to Kai once more. "Ar you sure you can fight? This is a difficult and crucial mission. It is no shame to stand by if you judge it is beyond your abilities..."

Kai:
Blood and filth smear floor of this long room. Six white stone statues of famous heroes line the hall... each clawed, bloodstained, partially smashed, or otherwise defaced. At the far end of the hall, a raised dais holds an upturned alabaster altar. Sitting atop the upside-down altar is a hideous mass of severed limbs that have been stitched together into a vile monstrous insectoid shape. Before the dais, seven ratty bedrolls have been laid out on the floor.

This is the description of the room you are in now.

On the dreadful altar you are able to notice a tattooed arm among the sewed ones... quite similar to Thilde's.

Meanwhile, Rukzha inspects the room where the maddened alchemist came from. A long table and six chairs have been pushed against the western wall. On the opposite wall, a tapestry depicting a map of Mendev hangs from a silver rod... the tapestry has been slashed several times and splashed with filth. A bedroll sits on the floor, and on the nearby table is an array of alchemical devices and a long wooden sword case wrapped with cords, as if ready for travel.

There hasn't been much room for mirth lately, so she takes the opportunities for it that do pop up. "He's been primarily using his swords, they'll be for emergencies for you both. Like if we face flying enemies. There are quite a few demons with wings. Why not just grab twenty of the normal arrows and a couple of the holy ones? If we need to use the special arrows we won't have time to toss the arrows around."

Elriel also chuckles at the notion. He jokingly gives a few more arrows to Brevon, "C'mon, big guy. Take a few more, even some of these magical ones. I don't like to shoot either but sometimes we won't have a choice.

In the tapestry room Rukzha will scan for magic and ask Elriel to check the crate for traps before the case is opened. "[b]Another case. Hopefully that contains another sword we can use, maybe for Elriel this time. Would you mind checking it for traps before we open it?"

The half-elf focuses his lenses on the crate and inspects it for traps.

Irabeth nods to Arrika's question. "Indeed they will but we have no way to give them right now... lets finish our mission her first."

Rukzha:
You discover no occult function for the horrifying altar. It is disturbing but there are no links to any spell or ritual that you know or have heard of.

While Elriel examines the case, Rukzha notices the alchemical equipment on the table consists of a masterwork alchemy lab. After a couple seconds Elriel assures you that no trap has been prepared and soon after opens the case, revealing a beautiful longsword, shining with light blue light. As soon as Irabeth puts her eyes on the sword she quickly moves forward, grabbing it. "I... I can't believe it! My father's sword! I thought it was lost..."

With the sword removed from the case, Elriel notices a small note tucked inside.

Small Note:
LORD STAUNTON,

I BELIEVE YOU WILL FIND THE ENCLOSED WEAPON TO BE A SINGULAR AND FAMILIAR DELIGHT, FOR IT ONCE BELONGED TO YOUR OLD "FRIEND" IRABETH. SHE SOLD IT TO KANDRO NYSERIAN, OF ALL PEOPLE - I'VE NO IDEA WHY. KANDRO'S BEEN SITTING ON IT FOR YEARS - STILL WOULD BE, EXCEPT HIS HOME GOT SMASHED BY AN ULKRETH. SHAME. HE MANAGED TO SAVE THE SWORD AND CAME HERE, BEGGING FOR AN ESCORT NORTH TO DREZEN, DOUBTLESS SO HE COULD GIVE YOU THE SWORD AND WEASEL SOME CASH TO HELP HIM SET UP A NEW HOME. I HOPE YOU DON'T BEGRUDGE A CREATIVITY I TOOK - OUR FRIEND NYSERIAN SERVES NOW AS A WARM SUIT FOR A VERMLEK AS PUNISHMENT FOR ONLY REVEALING THE SWORD NOW INSTEAD OF WHEN HE FIRST ACQUIRED IT. I SUSPECT THE BLADE WILL TAKE TO YOUR BROTHER'S TOUCH NICELY!

YOUR LOYAL SERVANT,
OTHIRUBO

Rukzha is curious about the note Elriel picks out. "Let me see too." She says and presses close to read it as the same time as him.

"I think Othirubo is the name of the alchemist. It says here you sold the sword to Kandro Nyserian, one of the corpses we met outside." Rukzha turns towards the other half-orc with a questioning look. She doesn't judge the woman, she's just curious about the veracity of the claim.

Elriel also wants to know if the note is truthful, he looked at Irabeth, "Is this correct? Anything else to add?"

Kai eats the rest of his meager meal heartily, and nods and shakes the hand of anyone who offers, like Arrika. He flinches a little bit as Irabeth approaches, but as her healing light pulses through him, he reminds his body that the company of these people is safe. His whole being takes on a new tone, as if he were born a new man. No longer hunched over in exhaustion and fear, but brimming with vim and vigor.

After Irabeth raises Elriel's concerns again, the young monk reassures the both of them, "Beth, Can I call you Beth? And Eler... Elriel, sorry I'm really bad with names, almost forgot yours already. Anyway Guys, I feel better than ever thanks to you. Have I got concerns? Maybe. But on a full stomach and with this much energy, I'll be more than OK. Besides, I owe you all and aside from pouring drinks, fighting is my only useful skill."

After this, Kai moves on with the group to discuss about weapons and other gear. He drops two stones around his forehead and they start orbiting his bald head. One of them glows with the brightness of a torch.

"I don't think I need any more weapons. I've got what I know, and I know what I've got.

But erm... uh, forgot your name already, Tattoos. Could you hang on to this and use it on me every so often? Its a protective spell." He asks Rukzha, handing her a Wand of Mage Armor. With a sad smile he adds, "Ironically the dwarf who owned that wand last had almost as many tattoos as you do. But I called her Grouch. Because she was... well you get it."

Finally free of the closet he was hiding in, Kai walked out with Rukzha and the others and saw that morbid 'sculpture' and wanted to scream inside. He didn't, thankfully, but when he saw Thilde's arm, he almost vomited. But he held that down too. Rage simmered in place of sadness and fear.

He swallowed staring at that arm the whole time, "The one who did this, did you kill him already?"

Sorry about the severe change in tone. I had initially planned on having his voice feel a little more scrappy than your average monk, but I forgot in all my excitement. We'll chalk it up to him being really hungry before.

I was thinking about nicknames for people and almost gave Elriel one, but I think Kai would have hung on to every word after being isolated for so long and would have made a mental point to remember Elriel's name as the first person to say anything to him.

"It's Rukzha. Rukzha Kerzuk." She says as she takes the wand and studies it to find out it contains mage armor. "I could use the wand, but it'll last longer if I cast it myself and it would save the wand for when I don't have more spells left." She focuses on her pearl for a moment then starts chanting and puts her arm on the monk.

I'll just use the pearl since he asked Rukzha. Rukzha can either use the wand or get a cast from Arrika later if it's necessary.
