Idris stands behind Kirin - far enough to give her space, close enough to be imposing and keep an eye on her belongings. He slowly scans the room, using his natural height as his advantage, keeping an eye out for anyone taking particular notice to them.

I'm glad I chose the more normal group of the two, might be easier to keep the attention off these two, who might be able to get people talking easier.

Arms crossed, self contained, listening to the conversations around him. It would do, for now, though any more than three days would get boring, quickly.

Setting up my conditions for Quibble now, leaving a decent amount to GM discretion - If I would think that a particular roll would Influence an NPC for information or Cover our tracks, I will use my 1/day Quibble on any natural 1 or 2.

With a flash of my eyes, fate changes, the patrons of chaos alter the flow of time, and another attempt is made - but the second attempt is final.

"Sorry, Ma'am, but it is the price I have to charge. You know, gotta call in a couple of girls from the town to help out, a couple of boys to haul wood and keep the fires going. Dinner is all ready in the pot, a nice mutton stew, and I'll be gettin' up early to make the porridge in the morning. We'll have fresh eggs, too, if'n you want some, but I'd get here early 'cause they'll be goin' fast.

"All this luxury costs money. You know how it is. Now, if you want cheaper, you could just go pitch your tents at the tent city. I hate to be rude, but that's how it is."

Kirin:
You think she's trying to deal with you honestly, but but you aren't sure. It is clear, though, that the public room is packed; the bartender and the couple of waitresses are working very hard to keep the tankards full.

Idris:
She is absolutely lying. She can sell you the rooms for far less than she says... the costs are negligible to her.

Ehr'Lynd:
She's telling the truth. You get the idea she is treating with you very honestly, as much as you hate to admit it.

"Oh, and if'n you wanna talk trade, you should head over to Orug's General Store. He's always looking for new trade deals, and is also always willing to talk."

Idris' eyes narrow slightly as he takes a step up behind Kirin. His voice is deep, stern, and flat.

"No disrespect in your place of business, ma'am, but I believe you have taken my companions' nice appearance as also making her a fool. I can assure you, as owner of a caravan, the supplies that she could bring you could make you the talk of the town and even the region. She is also a shrewd negotiator who is well aware what a room in a crowded pub is worth. We would be happy to give you our coin and negotiate a trade deal with you still, but please, even if you take her for a fool, do not take me for one. That is not a good mistake to make."

Ehr'lynd steps forward in front of Idris in a blatant attempt to shut him up, "You will have to excuse all of us. You can understand how road travel makes everybody weary. Sometimes things are said that are not meant in the context stated and for that I apologize. I can appreciate the cost of doing business and will gladly cover the difference in coin between your going rate, and what my colleague here is trying to negotiate. I cannot suffer through another night of sleeping on the hard ground."

He darts a concerned and stern look towards Idris as he thinks to himself, 'It is as I feared, the stories of the Society of members turning everything into a push and pull may be true. I wouldn't be surprised if the other group did leave a trail of bodies behind them. This is after all, the standard operating procedure I not only hear of, but that I apparently am now witnessing. I will apparently need act as the skeptic of this group.'

Bowing slightly and providing the coin promised he speaks again to the innkeeper, "Thank you most kindly for your hospitality and advice on where we may find opportunities to peruse our business. I also thank you for your hospitality of a roof over our heads and food in our stomachs."

When offered a moment of quiet away from prying ears, Ehr'lynd speaks abruptly and with obvious frustration to his colleges, "To achieve our goal here we must not draw attention to ourselves, and particularly should not cause a ruckus. Negotiating under the legitimate guise of a trading caravan is one thing, verbally accosting our hosts is another. You will appear in my report, and I suggest you hold your tongue in the future. If you have a concern, address it to one of us...", he grits his teeth and nearly whispers, "...quietly."

He turns his attention away from Idris, "Miss Quetzal, I am not a trained negotiator, but I know a thing or two about people and I am trained in watching humanoid behavior and in understanding the value in things. Please do not hesitate to use my skills as you see fit. I will let you know if I see anything."

Kirin, Ehr'lynd, Idris

Ehr'lynd:
It seems that Idris's outburst has drawn some unwanted attention... even more than you were getting before. You get the idea that the group of three was causing some... looks... even before he got all threatening.

As Idris goes into scare-mode, you see the Hanna's eyes go wide. All eyes turn to the three, and an increased murmur of conversation can be heard around the room. "I am sorry, sir. I meant no offense. I truly am giving you the best price that I can. I offered you my best price right up front! I only have two rooms, but I could offer you space in the common room if you'd like. I could do that for 5 silver each? That would still include your meals. But that is the best I can do, good folks. "

The Beer Gardens
Celeste, Rafael, and Kali

Celeste:
You realize that here in the beer gardens you have an audience that is becoming well lubricated. Ears were perking up with Rafael's story telling. Perhaps with a little more prodding, the mouths would loosen as well

Rafael:
Having been in more than a couple of these beer gardens in the past, you realize that many of the locals might actually be impressed with a show of consumption. If you manage to outdrink them, they might loosen their tongues and start talking

Kali:
Observing the folks in the beer gardens, you realize that they are probably pretty bored. There is no entertainment in the area other than the beer. No singer, no performer of any type. Also, no one has actually tried talking with anyone. The two farm hands you are observing look friendly enough.

With the evening slowdown, there is no problem getting your tankards filled. In fact, a girl has been walking around with pitchers, and is very good about keeping the mugs filled with their weak, but palatable beer. You notice the patrons giving her coins as she comes around... mostly coppers, but a few silvers.

Ehr'lynd places the coin on the desk, "Thank you for the room." He whispers into Kirin's ear, "It is imperative we stop drawing any attention, might I suggest we remove ourselves from this room and have any discussions with the shopkeepers needed?" He then begins to make his way to the door and out to the street.

The following is for much later, but I had time to write it now.

That evening, after the Pathfinders gather in their room at the Inn, have discussed anything needing discussion, and retired, Ehr'lynd takes pen to parchment.

The Letter:
Dear Venture Captain Jorsal,

This letter is in regards to actions taken by Pathfinder Field Agents during the activities described in the Pathfinder chronicle issued as "Scars of the Third Crusade" on 24-02-4714. I wish to lodge a formal complaint on Agent Idris Mael due to outbursts unbecoming an agent, pursuant to section 45R, subjection 12 of the Pathfinder Code of conduct. This note does not contest or otherwise argue on the proper assignment of said resource, but rather comments on specific actions related to direct altercations with non-hostiles an open setting. On said date, the individual noted accused a shopekeeper of "making [Kirin] a fool" and ending with to a direct threat to her safety. Due to the tone taken despite orders to maintain a degree of anonymity during an ongoing investigation to the legal status of Pathfinder agents, this may negatively impact both directly and indirectly our stated objective and the outcome of said chronicle. I am writing this note prior to determining the outcome of said investigation such that future knowledge does not produce undo leniency on the actions taken. Please consider this my request for proper and formal disciplinary action on Agent Idris Mael. I do not request formal dismissal, but would suggest that perhaps retraining on proper field etiquette would be appropriate. I leave myself, and the other member of my party present during said altercation, Agent Kirin Quetzal, available for any questions regarding the situation. Thank you for your consideration in this difficult conversation.

Kind Regards,
Agent Ehr'lynd Hûraegon

Ehr'lynd smiles to himself, places the note in an envelope, scrawls out the name of its recipient, and finds his bed for the night.

Later...:
Weeks later Ambrus Valsin is reviewing his incoming mailbox. Along with the assortment of official memorandums, invitations to formal balls, and correspondence with Zarta Draleen he comes across a letter with a familiar scrawl across the front. "Another one," he grumbles as he stands from his desk and nods, knowing what needs to be done regarding the latest infraction. Letter pinched within his fist as if it might get away, Valsin quickly walks over to a dusty file cabinet in the corner of his opulent office which he throws opens to reveal personnel files of Pathfinder Field Agents under review. Inside, he flips to one of the manila colored folders, which he struggles to open beyond the capabilities of its overstuffed maw. Without care or formality Ambrus shoves the letter inside, where dozens of other letters have found their home, unopened".

Rafael stands up as the beer maid passes him again while on her way to the keg. He raises his half empty mug in one hand while openly giving her a gold piece.

"Drinks all around my dear!" he exclaims to the light crowd, then downs the last of the tankard in a single swift gulp.

Putting the empty mug down, he continues to speak to the room. "I apologize if I'm being obtuse, but my colleagues and I have passed through while scouting new trade for our caravan and I was surprised to see a festival this time of year. Would someone be so kind to sit with us for a moment and tell us the story of this execution I've heard about? I have to say it's all quite exciting!"

”Thank you Hannah. Please excuse my colleague. He can be a bit… protective at times.

I know of a village to the south with an abundance of young men and women looking for seasonal work. Perhaps I could suggest they inquire around Dawnton during harvest seasons?

The food sounds delicious. A warm meal would do us all good. And I don’t know if my back can take another night sleeping on the ground. I’ll gladly take a room” Kirin says, placing double the requested gold on the table.

”Please let me know if there is anything we can do to be of assistance.“ Kirin mentions as she glances around the busy establishment.

”Orug's General Store you say? I’ll have to check it out. Sounds promising.“

”See you later tonight, Hannah” Kirin smiles warmly as she heads towards the door.

Once outside Kirin will turn towards her comrades.

@ Idris ”Thank you for your concern. I appreciate it.” Kirin states warmly. ”But I can handle myself in a negotiation” Kirin continues politely. ”I am well aware it’s possible we could have gotten a better deal. But I would never sacrifice positive relations for money. Especially when our actual mission could very well depend upon those positive relations. That being said – I value your input and look forward to your opinion on future matters”

Turning towards Ehr'lynd. ”Thank you for your assistance as well. To be on the same page - It is my standard protocol to open a negotiation with friendly haggling, initiating the potential for barter. It is in this way that I ascertain potential goods or services the individual may benefit from.

This serves to gain me information, relations, and to facilitate in the connection of groups of individuals that I know to the mutual benefit of all.

And. To report a comrade? Or even threaten to do so? Really? In my experience it is often more beneficial to attempt a polite resolution amongst party members before resorting to reporting a behavior to a higher authority.”

Addressing both now. ”On the topic of being on the same page. How would each of you like to proceed at the general store? Do you think we should all go in together or should some of us wait outside? What is the feel each of you have gotten from the townsfolk so far?”

Idris grumpily goes silent, disappointed at himself for misreading the situation and the possibility of being reported. Not because he is afraid of a black mark on his record - that he could deal with and even expected - but that things like that usually require follow ups. Documentation. Meetings. More documentation...

He preferred things more simple and off the cuff. So, for the moment, he falls to silence instead.

Outside..
"I do not like being pushed around and taken for a fool. Rather better to assert our positions than be seen as greenhorns that can be walked all over," he speaks quickly, keeping his voice level again, but much quieter this time.

"Yes. The general store sounds good. I shall attempt more... subtlety this time."

If someone stands to tell it, drink and appreciate the story. If someone doesn't, use Kn:Local to remember a local story or drinking song that would rouse the crowd, preferably something with a chorus that everyone can join in, and perform it.

Rafael offers the beer gardens a round (cost 10gp all said and told!), which immediately lightens the mood there. He starts chatting up the place, trying to see who is willing to talk. With Kali and Celeste helping, he gets several folks to talk.

One of the farmhands has the following story. "When Kenabres fell, half the survivors got possessed by demons. There were tons of Pathfinders there, so, many of them got possessed, too. Those poor Pathfinders most certainly killed those people, but it’s not really their fault."

A little later, he bartender leans over to Rafael, as he is paying his tab. "Ya' know, the sheriff hisself wants ta hang d'ose murderers. He done got hisself a testimony all in writin' from a bonifide eye witness to the crimes that proves they done it. Seems only right to me that they have fer what they done, too."

"Yeah, I hear that nother stranger, this one tall and quiet with a patch of hair missing from the back of his head, has been in town for about as long as the Pathfinders have. He sometimes asks more questions about the accused than is considered seemly in these parts."

His tablemate responds, "Yeah, them outsiders don't know how to keep to themselves, no do they?" He looks right at Idris. "Never know when to stop askin' and just leave well enough alone!'

As Ehr'lynd approaches the door, another man walks in the door, talking to what appears to be his wife. "Two small children saw one of those Pathfinders mutilatin' the body of the second murder victim. They barely escaped when that damned Pathfinder chased them down with his blades drawn!"

As the group from the beer gardens staggers to the inn, the other three step out on their way to the General Store, not realizing quite how late it has gotten. They are able to exchange notes on what they have learned (Please add your clues/rumors to sheet #3 on the Dawnton and Locations)

As you all finish up with your exchange, a woman bursts out of the The Heath and Harvest. (see slide #4). She is a short woman, with short blonde hair. She looks like she has donned her gear somewhat hastily, though everything is in good working order.

She addresses the party in a firm, but not outright hostile voice. "Folks, my name is Erira Corum, and I am an agent of The Inheritor, here to defend this town against the forces of chaos and evil that the Worldwound presents. I hear you have been asking questions about the Pathfinder murder-hobos that I captured. Are you Pathfinders yourselves, trying to free your compatriots from their just rewards? What is your intent in Dawnton?" She stands there, with her hands on her hips, awaiting your response.

Sorry, are we inside the inn, or just outside the door?

Celeste's action:
Regardless, Celeste casts Detect Thoughts using a spell slot to do so. Since Pathfinder does not use facing, I can be looking at Idris or Ehr'lynd to hide the small manifestation and project the cone to read Erika's thoughts. It takes me three rounds before I glean any useful info.

If we are inside, Celeste will move to the innkeep, and ask for a mug of tea if they have it. If Erika asks where I am going or what I am doing, my response will be that I need a cup of tea to offset the beer I drank adding it is not good for the body. Then I will cast the above spell.

Outside the Inn.

As Kirin replies to Ekira, Celeste starts looking at her. explicit mechanics about facing aside, I am ruling that you are looking in the direction of your cone. You all notice that she is looking at you all kind of funny as well.

Ekira asks incredulously, "You honestly don't know about the Worldwound? How The Abyss has forced its way onto Golarion and is threatening all life on our world? Either you are less intelligent than you look, or you are lying to me. Neither would be good in this part of the world."

She gathers herself up as if she was planning to leave. "Either way, I suggest that you do not interfere with the justice of Iomedae. Be warned, I shall be keeping my eye on you. Good evening." With that, she turns and re-enters the inn.

Celeste:
Ekira is taking liberties with the legal process, stretching the tenets of the Inheritor, and exhibiting unsettling zealotry.

Ehr'lynd:
Ekira is taking liberties with the legal process, stretching the tenets of the Inheritor, and exhibiting unsettling zealotry. You recall that during the Third Mendevian Crusade, Mendev suffered from the witch hunts led by overzealous inquisitors of Iomedae, and Ekira’s uniform and behavior hearken back to that disastrous campaign.

By this time, Kali has noticed that the lights are out at the general store, as they are in almost the entire town. People have been walking (or staggering) out of the inn, and are returning to their homes, though far fewer than were in the common room.

"Um... wow! That (woman) is crazy! Like bug eyed bat guano crazy." Celeste shakes her head letting out a low whistle to punctuate her analysis.

"I think she was scanning us for evil as well. She was giving me 'The Look' when I was trying to read her thoughts. Also, she is bound and determined to see our compatriots hang. For someone dedicated to a god of justice, she has very loose interpretations of the law; something is most definitely wrong with her."

Rafael continued to watch the door for a few moments after Ekria reentered the inn, then he turns to face the group.

"I believe we've found our first antagonist." He says with a buzzed grin. His eyes then follow a pair stumbling off from the Inn that abruptly disappear between two buildings a ways down the thoroughfare. "I do suggest, however, that we move to one of our rooms before divulging much more in these shadowy streets. We still need to finish sharing notes from the evening as well as planning for tomorrow."

He then hands Idris the mostly full mug of beer he has been holding since the bartender filled it as they left the beer tent, "Looks like you could use a drink."

Whenever we enter our room:
Rafael checks the room for suspicious items, such as a hidden magical listening device, false wall, people snooping outside the window, etc.

Rafael:
No need to spoiler stuff like that... just makes it harder to read... but thank you for the effort!

Rafael looks around the room, but finds nothing out of the ordinary. It is a reasonably good inn, and they have brought in extra cots to make sure there is room for the three people sharing the room. The spellcasters can confirm that they can find no magical traps, foci, or anything else.

Are you setting guards or anything, or just sleeping?

How are you splitting up the rooms? I assume men in one, women in the other, since it appears we are evenly split?

"A male/female split tonight seems appropriate." sure, why not? "Three per room."

"What are your thoughts - post guards tonight or do you think we're safe enough in the Inn?"

"And what kind of split should we aim for in the morning, after breakfast?"

"I plan to head to the general store. Gather information. Arrange trade. Somebody should talk to the Sheriff too. Though I think we need a better pretext for why we'd engage in that conversation... Any ideas on that one?"

giving people time to respond between questions. just seemed more efficient to post them together.

Please feel free to answer Kirin's questions, but I'll be moving on.

The Pathfinders sleep soundly, and awaken early to the smell of porridge and bacon. They are able to help themselves to a hearty breakfast before the head our for their morning investigations.

Where are folks going? I'll wait for at least 4 to post, but if you you haven't posted, you are likely waiting at the inn.

Conversation in the room the night before
"I would be fine speaking to the Sheriff, we could easily ask about the local events on the premise of our safety while traveling in the region. I am most curious to find out where this crime happened so we can inspect what is left of the scene. Also, he would likely be the best source of rumors on the similar events that have happened in neighboring villages."

"I believe we need more information on Ekria as well, and that may be the hardest task. I support the more criminal options like searching her belongings and shadowing her, though I can understand if members of this party would not be comfortable with that."

"There is also the eye witness, we need a plan for changing their mind. Does anyone have a spell that could help?"

After breakfast
Rafael sips coffee and casually waits for everyone to finish their meal.

Idris, still disappointed in his lack of awareness, remains quiet and in the back of the party. Maybe he just needed rest from the long journey..

This woman though. With her 'authority', she could apparently accuse and reprimand people who had done nothing. That made him frustrated, but of course, having screwed up once already, he was going to keep his mouth shut.

Idris keeps silent until the group convenes to discuss sleeping arrangements.

"I don't like it. Any of it. That woman is too pushy. I'm curious about this witness though, and the evidence the sheriff has. Maybe they have a vendetta against Pathfinders?" Idris shakes his head, deep in thought. "I can stay up for a while. Too restless to sleep anyway. Whatever we do tomorrow, let's not make it boring."

Ehr'lynd responds to Kirin, "Agreed on our accommodations; that is what the charter says we should do when out adventuring. Guards might not be a bad idea either. Both are covered in our handbooks as reasonable precautions."

He looks deep in contemplation about the interaction with Erika before continuing, obviously more concerned with the task at hand than sleeping conditions, "That inquisitor is most unsettling. I've heard such accusations were commonplace during the Third Mendevian Crusade."

He pauses for dramatic effect, "What makes things during that time particularly intriguing is that those accusations were quite quasi-legal. While legal processes and tenants can be..." another pause for effect, "...flexible. Those crusaders would sometimes stretch the ideology of Iomedae to the breaking point. When you are that zealous, corruption of one's ideals is not difficult, and witch hunts often arise."

Clearly losing his audience Ehr'lynd makes his point, "Curiously, her uniform is not part of the newest campaign. More curiously, it's more akin to the garb worn by the soldiers of that time. Perhaps there is a connection?"

He returns to looking at Kirin, "My skills are likely best used continuing to accompany you. I agree though that we need to find some way to talk her. Or examine her more closely without rousing suspicion."

Ehr'lynd completes his activities for the evening and retires for everybody else, deep in thought at what he witnessed.

Anybody that wants to read the spoilered sections of my last post is welcome.

If we are separating in this manner, perhaps it would be better if I go with you and Kali to the Sheriff, and Kirin continues her ruse as a merchant where Idris can get into less..." again a pause..."trouble?"

Ehr'lynd, clearly trying to be as diplomatic as possible, but failing not to insult people in the process tries again, "But it is merely a suggestion. I do think it may serve us well if Kali and Kirin continue to do the majority of the talking."

"Um... but that would make me a merchant, Ehr'lynd, and I just am not a merchant in anyone's imagination. Besides, who died and put you in charge, hm? I am an independent woman and will make my own choices thank you very much."

"I think Idris should make his own decisions. You know what? Idris! I think you and I should go visit the crime scene! Let the high and mighty elf play at commander-in-chief here while you and I get some real investigating work done. Let's go, Idris."

Celeste grabs Idris by the arm and drags him out of the inn whether he wants to go or not. She mutters under her breath something about stupid elves and their damn rules.

Ehr'lynd looks very confused at the interaction, "It seems you may have a chip on your shoulder and a complete misunderstanding of my words. I merely made a..." another pause, "...suggestion."

Ehr'lynd continues, "We agreed very early on in our mission that we had two individuals more trained in the art of diplomacy, that would be," Ehr'lynd points, "Kirin and Kali."

Although his words do not betray the tone, you can sense a certain smugness and finality to his words, " Rafael suggested we join them, which would seem counter to our original decision to make sure we do not upset the locals. Furthermore, Idris here has demonstrated a distinct lack of respect for subtlety, which I would think we can all agree would be most detrimental to place in front of the individual with the most power to accuse all of us of some crime as well."

As if to make a point Ehr'lynd pauses yet again, "Therefore, Celeste, when assessing Rafael's suggestion, I was addressing the immediate need to both add somebody with a more calm touch, and remove a known issue. The only option left when splitting into two groups, without slighting Rafael for his suggestion was to leave him in the group and swap out the two members. So while you may take this as a negative statement on your capabilities as a Pathfinder, it is far from it. It is a testament to the capabilities of Kirin, and Kali and made out of respect for the fact that Rafael did come forward with an idea that warranted discussion. Please do not let your ego get in the way of what is best for all of us as a whole."

Ehr'lynd looks unhappy, "You have also made a fine decision of suggesting that somebody look through the scene of the crime. That sounds like an ideal task for Idris, but are you not worried that your..., at this point the pauses become irritating, "...unique skills...will be wasted?"

"A fine attempt to leverage reason, Ehr'lynd, but that Samsaran has a blustery soul and I believe she's gone for now. Also, it seems the Master Assessor failed to note when we met that I've spent my life trading on the seas and am very competent in diplomacy, intimidation, and weaving lies."

"That said, Kali and I had a grand night at the beer tent and it would be my pleasure to join her on a morning stroll." Rafael smiles at Kali and politely gestures to the door.

Celeste and Idris:

As Celeste charges out of the inn with Idris, they both come to the realization that they haven't learned where the crime scenes were.

Ehr'lynd's eyes narrow as he contemplates what will go into his next report. He speaks to Rafael, "It is not my fault you have not, until now, told me where your skills lie other than a casual mention that you've 'traded'. We've spent little time together, and while I am an Elf and have a lifespan that has given me the opportunity to learn to assess the value in things, I, like you, am not infallible. I leveraged the information at-hand. I would suggest being more forthcoming about your talents in the future so that I can make more informed suggestions."

Ehr'lynd seems to become less tense, "So I would suggest, rather than passively attacking my capabilities by using a title I've never used myself, you remember our mandate to cooperate and realize every..." a much longer pause for a much longer dramatic effect"...suggestion...I make is merely that. I am hardly trying to lead this group, as I do know my limitations. Perhaps you should learn yours."

Idris lifts an eyebrow to the rank-and-file loving elf, but holds his tongue. His impatience has not yet gotten the better of him, but if it kept up... well, Idris would make the elf work if he wanted to document everything he did.

He would be sure to keep in mind the lack of respect for subtlety and known issue lines for later.

He makes a mental checklist as people go through ideas:
Caravan guard: Boring.
Talking to red angry lady: Boring, unless she decides to fight.
General store: Profitable, but boring.
Blue-skinned people and a crime scene: Acceptable

Kirin crosses her arms and listens to her comrades speak.

"Well. Whoever goes to talk to the sheriff. We have a good pretext under verifying Ericka's position - as we were all verbally accosted by her. We deserve to know more as to why.

Idris and Celeste. Investigate the crime scene. That works.

I plan to head to the general store first. To gather information mostly. I would like to speak to our eye witness children as well - if possible.
