Ileyna's backstory has been updated. It should be findable HERE.

Dark Archive

I'm planning to submit a much toned down version of Siobhan - who was in a lvl 11 RotR game that sadly died out. I put a truncated version of her background below. She'll be a Scion of Humanity Aasimar, Dual-Cursed Oracle of the Dark Tapestry.

Would anyone be interested in teaming up backgrounds with me? I enjoy weaving stories with other people! :) What I've put below is entirely mutable - just let me know if you have some fun ideas we can share.

Fluff:
As a child Siobhan was defined by fearlessness. A natural leader she was always the instigator and ringleader of whatever pranks and mischief the local youth were involved in. Combined with her seemingly miraculous ability to open locks at a touch, not a store of biscuits, sugar or other sweet things was safe in the whole of Sandpoint.

That changed on a fateful night when the nine-year-old Siobhan snuck out on a dare to explore one of the tombs in the Pharasmin cemetery outside the village. She was able to enter the tombs easily enough, which surprised her but she continued on into the burial crypt intending to secure a shard of bone and conclusively win her dare.

Unfortunately for Siobhan the tomb she had chosen, the largest, darkest and scariest, was the resting place of a particularly foul and embittered nobleman whose spirit had returned after his death as a dread wraith. Siobhan, unable to read, had not noticed the warning signs the Church had posted and thus confronted a monster literally out of her nightmares.

The wraith appeared in its full hideousness, hoping to draw screams from the small girl before feeding on her. Siobhan realized she could not escape and remained as brave as she could, staring down the wraith in front of her. As she did so, the darkness behind her swirled and formed itself into a terrible visage, glowering protectively above the young girl’s head.

The sheer malevolence of this visage tore the wraith to pieces, shredding its incorporeal form even as Siobhan watched. As the tormented spirit faded Siobhan collapsed onto the floor, drained beyond endurance by the eldritch power that had used her as a conduit.

She lay there unmoving for two days, before an acolyte of Pharasma found her and hurried her to the temple. Lying in the cold crypt Siobhan had caught a fever which resisted the ministrations of the healers for weeks before the child finally pulled through. The fever left its mark however, gone was the previously chubby and cheerful child. Siobhan was now an extremely slender child, her dark hair turned completely white and she became prone to illness, often bedridden for days or weeks with colds and the other ailments of childhood.

Most significant though was her change of personality. Siobhan retained all her force of personality but it turned inwards. She spoke rarely although when she did her conviction and passion was such that people found themselves following her ideas almost without thought.

When she turned thirteen and began to feel the effects of puberty Siobhan manifested a new and inexplicable problem. Whenever she became worried, afraid or stresses she began to speak in a strange guttural language full of hissing sounds and impossible syllables. These ‘fits’ occurred sporadically for over a year until the last time her parents discovered her when Siobhan was surrounded by a cocoon of levitating objects, all crackling with a malign force.

Do we have a timeframe for this to close? Or is it buried in a previous comment that I didn't see?

Leave it to me to misspell Shalelu's surname...

@The Pale King: There are Griffins, but they're quite advanced. For starters, Axe Beaks look like the best choice.

@Harakani: Growing up faster would be alright, the problem is when you have elves, reaching adulthood at 110 years. It would be a bit problematic to sync everyone's growth, that's why I reduced elven (and similar races) adulthood to 30 years.

@Taraketh: It will close on June 5th.

@Everyone: of course, you can expand on your background, if you feel like it.

How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
An Honest worker, who is slightly tomboyish.

How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...?
I was adopted into a farming household next to Sandpoint.

Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...?
I current live in my own little house on the homestead where I work.

What do you want to do when you grow up?
I'd still like to continue farming, though I do want a bit of adventure to give me a new experience, if the opportunity ever came.

What is your favorite scary tale?
Stories of the Sandpoint Devil

@GM Sappy: Hmm - I think maybe I'm trying to do something not in sync with the campaign then. I'll rethink that theme. How dark do you think the game will be (especially the part where we are children)?
Second question: What team sports do kids play in Sandpoint? Goodle searching has brought up; Whistleball, Ruk, and Prismati as possibilities.

Dark Archive

- How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
Lucy: The smartest one in the class. Me and Mara(That's my rabbit) are studious, intelligent, proper, and educated. These things are only more true in these provincial surroundings.

Black Maiden: Pure Potential. Human form is strange, but as I learn how to use this human body and the powers available to it, soon enough I'll be strong enough to show this world what a real woman can do.

- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...?
Lucy: Father is a Chelaxian Noble, and we used to live the best life. Servants, slaves, a beautiful house, all the toys and dresses I could wish for. But for some reason, suddenly father came to my room one night and ordered me to pack my things, and before I knew what was happening, I had been shipped off to this nowhere town to study. I try to send letters back to father and mother, but I haven't heard anything back from them.

Black Maiden: What do you think? The little girl I'm stuck with got shipped here. Poor thing doesn't have a clue about what's really going on in Cheliax, and if your smart, you'll keep it that way. So long as she thinks she's got a home to go back to, she'll be happy. If she's happy, I'm happy, it's mutually beneficial.

- Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...?
Lucy: I live with my tutors that Father hired. Most of my days are spent studying contracts and languages which are important for a proper Chelaxian lady to know, but it's frightfully boring, so I slip away sometimes to play, even if there isn't much to do.

Black Maiden: The poor child lives with her "Tutors". I wonder how she'd react if she knew who they really were?

- What do you want to do when you grow up?
Lucy: Why, a proper lady of the Chelaxian courts of course. I'll write contracts, wear the finest dresses, and go to the most beautiful parties.

Black Maiden: Powerful. From that, all other things stem. Power in wealth, power in strength, power in magic, everything in life is about power.

- Who is your best friend?

Lucy: Probably Mara. It's tough making friends with the locals in this nowhere town, the local children know nothing of being proper.

Black Maiden: Why, Mara of course. He's the one who arranged this whole deal. I racked up quite of bit of debt to do it, but totally worth it.

- What is your favorite scary tale?

Lucy: I don't like scary tales much, but there was the story of the lady who married a man who loved her very much. She could do or have anything she wanted, but she couldn't open 1 door. So of course, the stupid woman opened the 1 door she wasn't suppose to open, and it was filled with all the man's previous wives! So he comes and kills her and adds her to the pile! *Shudder*

Black Maiden: Scary tale? Where I come from, "Scary tale" means something a bit different. Ours usually involve paladins. But if you mean the usual kind, I suppose my favorite is The one where the little boy cries wolf until nobody believes him, and then the wolf rips him to shreds.

- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andoshana?

Lucy: Who? Clearly some local folk hero. Typical. The real most awesomeist person ever is Lady Abrogail, duh.

Black Maiden: Who? Some Elven Archer? I'd have to see her in action, but if there is one thing I've learned, never underestimate someone with a story. Either the story is overstated, in which case your safe anyways, or it's understated, in which it does well to be extra careful.

Quick Question: Is the 'Child' oracle curse permitted? It seems every so appropriate for this particular game! :D

GM Sappy, how would you rule the elementalists destructive blasts work with feats such and PBS and precise shot? also, how would you rule the trait magical lineage affects destructive blast talents? does it affect one specific blast type or shape talent or the destructive blast as a whole?

BeastMaster here, Introducing Vakilan Korana, Aasimar Elementalist. Build is not quite finished, waiting on you

Fluff:

- How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
Seemingly naive, but hiding something from most.
- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...?
I was born here, and have lived here my whole life.
- Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...?
My mom, Lynera Korana and my (TBD). My dad, Nakroth, dissapeared when I was little.
- What do you want to do when you grow up?
Become and adventurer like my father was!
- Who is your best friend?
(TBD)
- What is your favorite scary tale?
I dont usually hear/read scary tales, so i dont know.
- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andoshana? I Love Shalelu! My dad and her were friends, and they went on an adventure or two together! She is almost like an aunt to me!
Siobhan Sable, I would love to tie our backgrounds together. Maybe one of us could edit the last name or something and be siblings, which would work if you are playing an azata blooded aasimar, otherwise we could be friends. Also GM Sappy,i forgot to ask this in the last post, can we roll an the aasimar variant abilites table?

@Harakani: I didn't envision it being very dark, but there could be some creepy-ish elements. Nothing too gothic or too morbid, anyway- I'd like this to be about growth and discovery.

@Siobhan: Not growing up physically while all your friends do... Yep, I believe that would work. Tough roleplay to avoid turning angsty, though.

@BeastMaster: Hmmmm... I'd say that you can consider "destructive blast" as a weapon for feat-related purposes. As for Magical Lineage, I never was a fan of it. Seeing as it's restricted to a single spell, I'd say it would work with a single combination of blast shape and type. However, if you check online, there are several Spheres of Power traits related to destructive blasts.

When I saw this thread on the list I thought it had something to do with the Child's Play movies. :)

Peet wrote:

I hated those movies when I was a kid. Love this game though. Dotting.

Working on Ernie Farway. "Stay faraway from that Farway boy now." Is all the kids around town ever hear, because Ernie... Well, Ernie is an aspiring alchemist.

Yeah I am not the biggest fan of magical lineage either, but afaik it was the only way to reduce spell point cost on a blast, which since i plan on using energy wall a lot throughout my career, it would be annoying to have to use a spell point for it. Though idk if it would actually reduce the spell point cost, that's probably up to you. Also, the spheres of power traits for destructive blasts are boring and have no flavor to me. They don't really ad anything to my character.

@Ernie: Oh, lovely aspiring alchemists... "Did you burn down the place again?" "Sorry, mom."

@BeastMaster: It would reduce the spell point cost for applying metamagic talents. Sadly, I don't think there's any way around burning a spell point for Energy Wall, and I'm not sure whether it would be balanced if I added it.

Ok, so, Ernie is done. He ended up with a GODLY initiative bonus. Due mostly because the mismatched alt racial, and reactionary actually being a fitting trait for a nerdy guy like him, and not being able to think of anything good to take besides imp. initiative. He's reserved and odd looking, which caused a bit of bullying to occur with some of his Mothers students. Having a Mother whom would be a quality teacher among elven societies, he is very intelligent (Mind that intelligence can be a measure of capability to learn as well as raw knowledge) more so than most adults in the town. He doesn't like to flaunt this though, as correcting other children would often get him beat up before he learned to shut his mouth and react quickly to violence.

Alright. So - new concept.
The Chosen One's brother.
We have a bunch of what will be highly epic characters - both power and story-wise.
So let's contrast that.
The Chosen One's Brother is the elder brother of the chosen one. He has no special powers. Eventually he'll be a conscript, but Slayer (Vanguard) comes closest to that for now.
Race depends on the sibling - the concept requires it - and name depends on race, but I'll call him James for now. Preference for human, though a half-sibling is certainly a possibility, and adopted siblings might work.

Niche wise, he'll be a decent skill monkey, full BAB, and sneak attack. Probably good at melee and ranged. Considering Skill Focus in Acrobatics (and the full BAB) to represent sporting skills. Not really a tank, but given the classes up so far he might double as one.

James is currently at the high point of his life. He's a talented Whistleball player, with an expectation he might go to Magnimar to play on a team, and possibly even tour.
He's the oldest of the group, and so the 'official' leader by virtue of being the most responsible - if someone breaks a limb, he's the one adults will yell at first.
He's a great guy. Protective. Responsible. Just not 'Special'. As the other characters - and especially his younger sibling (whoever that is) gain magical powers, rend space, and command the elements, he'll still be stuck desperately stabbing people with a sharp piece of steel.

@GM Sappy: is this concept worth writing up? It seems very different from everyone else
@All: is there anyone interested in being the younger sibling? Probably needs to be a caster class, preferably with a decent charisma. Preference for younger. Preference for at least half human. This might need to wait until after selection, but I'd be keen to see if there's enough interest to make it a possibility.

If you want to be Varisian, I'd be totally fine with Sammy having a half-brother.

@Harakani

Aurora was adopted into the family, so you could be any Human (or half-human, aasimar) race you want. But Aurora would be the Elder Sister (she was adopted in just a bit after the Honeymoon), and you'd be in a farming family.
So you could be similar to Ichiro Komaba from Silver Spoon.
Now Aurora is no caster, but she is competitive, so you could say you get combat practice with your elder sister, That and you'd have a Combat partner who'll later be able to really assist with flanking.
As I'll be using Jabbing style which can let me move as I attack, that and look in the profile to get a better idea of your possible elder sister.

@Siobhan: Not growing up physically while all your friends do... Yep, I believe that would work. Tough roleplay to avoid turning angsty, though.

I'm planning to play her as unaware of her abilities, at least for a while. So she probably won't catch on for quite a while - a few years from in game start time I imagine. She'll probably insist that she's 'going to get much taller any day now!' for a long time. I imagine there will be a point at which she'll eventually come to terms with it. (Nualia might be a good catalyst... (I've played in RotR games before, although none have ever gone the distance.)) So I'm hopeful that it can be done without devolving into an angst fest.

@ All: As I said earlier I'm happy (and indeed keen) to tie my background in with other characters. Siobhan is part of a gang of kids called the Salmon Street crew - I'm putting my fluff below so anyone who wants to read/spit-ball ideas is welcome to!

Siobhan's Background (longer than asked for...):

Siobhan is a bastard, one of many born at the Pixies Kitten through its years servicing Sandpoint. Her mother, Rosalie, was one of the most popular girls in the establishment and could never state with any confidence who Siobhan’s father actually was. Naturally tenderhearted Rosalie refused to turn Sio over to the Turandok academy and, with Madame Tesarani's permission has brought her daughter up within the extended family of the Pixies Kitten. Sio has been more fortunate than most in many respects. She learned to speak quickly and has been educated widely, if eclectically, by most of her 'aunts' and 'uncles' at the Kitten.

However much of Siobhan’s education has been on the streets of Sandpoint. She learned very young that being the 'Kittens kitten' could cut both ways and she scuffled hard in the streets to prove herself, returning more than once to the Kitten with black eyes and scuffed knees. She finally won general acceptance among the children of Sandpoint when she touched the base of Choppers Isle - a common dare, but one that relatively few were brave enough to actually complete.

It was in trying to overcome that feat that Siobhan’s life changed forever. She always idolised Shalelu, often running errands for her aunts and uncles just to linger outside the Rusty Dragon and hope to catch a glimpse of her idol. One day, egged on by her friends, Siobhan decided to prove that she was just as brave as her hero by breaking into one of the oldest crypts in Sandpoint's graveyard. Unfortunately for her the crypt she chose, the largest, darkest and scariest, was the resting place of a particularly foul and embittered nobleman whose spirit had returned after his death as a wraith. Siobhan was unable to read the warning glyphs adorning the tomb and was thus confronted by an all too real monster.

The wraith appeared in its full hideousness, hoping to draw screams from the small girl before feeding on her. Siobhan realized she could not escape and remained as brave as she could, trying to act the way she always imagined Shalelu would. As she did so, the darkness behind her swirled and formed itself into a shadowy figure, glowering protectively above the young girl’s head.

The figure wrapped Siobhan in a protective cocoon of shadow even as it tore the wraith to pieces, shredding its incorporeal form with claws of darkness. As the tormented spirit faded Siobhan collapsed onto the floor, drained beyond endurance by the eldritch power that had used her as a conduit.

She lay there unmoving for two days, before being found by Father Xanthus who, at Vakilan’s urging, hurried her back to the Pixies Kitten. Lying in the cold crypt Siobhan had caught a fever which resisted Hannah’s herbs and Father Xanthus’ prayers for weeks before she finally pulled through. The fever left its mark however. Previously chubby and possessing rude good health Siobhan became a slender child, her dark hair turned white and she became prone to illness, often bedridden for days or weeks with colds and the other ailments of childhood.

Even now, a year later, Siobhan has still to recover fully from her illness, although she retains no memory of what happened in the crypt. She still runs with the Salmon street gang – refusing to let her illness get the better of her but even at the tender age of nine she is aware that something has changed.

Short Version:
- How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
"Mum's favourite! I'm nine years old and as tough as any of the boys. No matter what anyone says!"
- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...?
"I was born here. Mum isn't quite sure who my daddy is, but I've got lots of aunts and uncles so it's ok!"
- Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...?
"I live at the Pixies Kitten with my mum, Miss Kaye and everyone else. I have my own little room right under the roof and I don't have to share with anyone!"
- What do you want to do when you grow up?
"I want to be an adventurer like Shalelu! Or maybe help make people happy - I like singing. Maybe I could sing in Mr Droku's theatre?" (From an OC POV this is a really cruel question to ask her!)
- Who is your best friend?
[TBD]
- What is your favorite scary tale?
"I used to like stories about ghosts, but since last year I don't like those ones much anymore. I like the stories Uncle Markus tells - he does really good voices and makes the Great and Terrible Goblin King sound really spooky!"
- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andoshana?
"It's Shalelu because she's Shalelu! And because she's really tough and everyone likes her, and no-one says she can't do things because she's a girl, and she gives me nuts when Mum isn't looking, and because she tells really good stories! Ameiko is cool too - I'm hoping when I'm older that she'll give me singing lessons if I help out in the kitchen or something!"

- How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
"The smartest person who will never tell you anything... unless you ask."

- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...?
"Born here, mom fell in love with dad and decided she wanted to spend his life with him. Then they had me."

- Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...?
"Mom, Dad and sometimes one of mom's students stays the night. I lock myself in my room on those nights."

- What do you want to do when you grow up?
"ALCHEMIST! Mom's one, and mom's the best person ever! She says im smart enough for it. So yeah."

- Who is your best friend? (hint hint, you may do joint backgrounds...)
"Well, there are a number of people whom don't make fun of me... I suppose them?"

- What is your favorite scary tale?
"I mostly like science books and mom isn't much of a story teller... Chopper scared me when I was little, still does really."

- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andoshana?
"No, its mom. Dad at a close second, then MAYBE Shalelu Andoshana."

@Aurora: Hmm - I think these characters'd be more peers than the older/younger sibling relationship I'm looking for. Would you be up for being best friends? I think they'd be fairly similar in terms of ability, at least at the start.

I can agree with that and seems to be a better fit then siblings.

I don't think we're going to get any new entries....

Likely not. But I'll leave this open, just in case, up until the 5th, so that everyone has time to clean and polish.

I think you got less then about 12 or 36 hours for a complete character submission.

About 24 hours left, I'm in CET time.

Im still interested and have most of my character's mechanics written down and just need to write down his fluff. Should have it done for tomorrow.

About 5 hours to go.

I lost too much time with the site being down and won't be able to finish. Im dropping out as a result. Have fun everyone.

I can understand that, the site has been down more frequently as of late.

I've been using notepad when I make characters so I don't have any worries about the site going down as I'm making or editing my characters

Hey, sorry, I've been on vacation with no computer access for a few days to check on the thread, didn't even realize I left something incomplete on my stats. I figure it's that I didn't put the ACs and health on the line or finish buying my armor and weapon. Is their anything else I need to put in? Thanks again for putting up with me being silly.

Oh, good grief, I'm really off my game, sorry about that. Question about the saves, are they base amount? I didn't see an adjustment in your rules. Otherwise, I think I fixed everything. Let me know if I missed anything.

Yep, saves are base. Sorry to see you go, Gramork. Too bad Paizo was down today.

I'll start going over the profiles now, although you still have time to make last-minute tweaks. You can expect results tomorrow, barring unfortunate site circumstances like today.

@Sappy: Thank you, I did want to do a few tweaks, but the site was down.
@Aurora: Great - I'll put it in :)

And the wait continues...

Ok, this was a HORRIBLY hard choice. I picked one more person than I was originally going for, and I hope that those who I had to leave out can find another DM willing to play this game, because all of your characters were really, really nice.

So, the adventurous children whose game is about to get serious are:
- Sammy Vestrana, That Weird, Unsettling Girl
- James, Her Sportsy, Cocky Brother
- Taraketh Feyn, The Wild Child of the Woods
- Ileyna Sczarletti-Ionita, The One With A Fervid Imagination
- Lucy Galonnica, That Obnoxious Brat From Cheliax
- Ruuki Tsune (formerly Luthian), That Foxfolk Who Makes Bad Jokes

Those chosen can head to Discussion, good luck to all of you others in your future quests!
