Many hundreds of years ago, the forces of good allied to destroy the main Temple of Orcus in the ancient city of Tsar. With their temple in ruins, the surviving high priests of this accursed demongod fled the city with an army of enemies on their trail—an army of heroic fighters, clerics and paladins—led by Zelkor, a powerful wizard. The exact fate of these evil priests was then unknown, for not only did the remnants of the followers of Orcus disappear from all human reckoning, but so did the army of light that followed after them disappear as well. Some said that in the eternal scales the loss of so many good men was a fair price to pay to rid the world of so much evil.

The evil cult, however, had not been destroyed. The surviving priests and their followers instead settled on a hill near the Forest of Hope, a sylvan woodland near the Coast Road. There they found a vast underground complex of caverns and mazes, carving out a volcanic intrusion beneath the hill. There, the priests of Orcus found the perfect lair to continue their vile rituals. For many years, they carried on in secret, hidden from the light and from the knowledge of men.

Many years later, their underground delving completed, the evil priests erected a hideous mausoleum and a sunken graveyard atop the hill. It is believed that these graves are in fact the final resting place of the pursuing army of heroes that had been destroyed to a man. Soon after the mausoleum was erected the peaceful creatures of the wood began to disappear. Though many rangers and druids investigated these happenings, the cause of the creatures’ disappearance was not immediately determined. Some years later a powerful group of adventurers, led by Bofred, a high priest of Thyr, investigated the evil happenings and found the sunken graveyard leading to a labyrinthine complex. Bofred and his companions found great hordes of evil creatures in the complex. Though some of his companions returned from their expedition, telling tales of fantastic treasure and ferocious monsters, Bofred was never seen again—lost in the catacombs beneath the cursed mausoleum.

For the last one hundred years, ranks of adventurers have ventured to the newfound dungeon. Many fell prey to bandits and monsters in the surrounding wilderness. Rumors suggest that of those who survived to reach the mausoleum and sunken graveyard, most were slain by guardians of green stone or perished on the very first level. Those rare few who return from deeper treks speak of horrible undead and creatures that cannot be slain. All who have explored Rappan Athuk offer this one universal piece of advice: “Don’t go down the Well.”

Unfortunately, your eldritch gods haven't given you much of a choice... you've been commanded to clear this place of evil and remind the infernal powers that goodness is not the only thing they have to fear. When evil stares into the abyss of madness, the madness occasionally looks back...

You crest the last hill and finally the complex comes into view. In stark contrast to the lush greenery of the hills lies a large sunken graveyard laid out in the shape of a cross. Rather than towering above the ground, the graves have settled into depressions, and the main mausoleum, a building of strange green stone, rests in the deepest depression some 40 feet below the ground on which you now stand. At the other end of the grave-filled hollow stands what appears to be a stone well. There are no gravestones near it. The normal sounds of wildlife are gone, and large carrion birds circle overhead. An ominous silence rests about the place. Each of you knows in your heart that you have found the legendary dungeon of Rappan Athuk. And though none dare speak it, you wonder if you will live to return to the warmth of hearth and home...

A new map is available at the top of the page - as well as in the Campaign tab, which will have an ongoing list of the areas you've already visited. If I forget to add something there, don't hesitate to remind me. For now, you can take a look at any of the areas listed on the map (G-1 through G-6)... or leave the dungeon and look around the surrounding area instead! Each square on the map of the ground level represents 20 feet. Given the nature of this dungeon, it's very important that you be precise about where you're going - among other things, failure to do so could lead to you walking right into a trap you didn't intend to explore. Therefore, any time there could possibly be doubt - such as when you're visiting one of several areas with the same notation, like the two G-5's - please be very precise about which one you're examining. Trust me, you'll be better off if you keep that in mind.

In addition, one reminder about dungeon notations on the maps: areas are not always listed in the order that players are expected to visit them, and the highest number is not always the chamber leading forward. This is done on purpose to make it harder for you to guess about what the fastest way to proceed is, so you may not want to ignore an area just because it has a lower notation number.

Stepping carefully, his eyes darting from place to place in the graveyard, a rather short demihuman man slowly observes the quiet entrance to Rappan Athuk. He appears to be a giant wingless crow, complete with jet black feathers and beak, a creature commonly known as a Tengu. His eyes hold a glimmer of wisdom in them as he looks from place to place, and the strange crystal-topped staff he clutches in his right hand seems to glint in the sunlight. Clad in a dark grey breastplate over a leather and fur traveler's outfit, and with a heavy-looking satchel hung over his slight frame, he is clearly here to investigate the depths of the dungeon. However, he seems rather off, his posture bent strangely due to his ill-fitting boots, and he seems to act more like a bird than a human.

"Caw!" he squawks, the noise breaking the silence that had only been disturbed by the group's movement. "Worried. What think?" he speaks in an anxious tone, looking to his companions, his voice echoing more softly in the depression of land that houses the mausoleum. He is Iyashi Kei, the forgotten son of Clan Kei, a house of Tengu exorcists known throughout the lands of Tian Xia. He looks around some more, before backing up a bit to take a look at the lands surrounding the area. "Strange!" Kei calls as his sharp eyes take in the rolling hills and grasslands, before rubbing the tuft of feathers under his beak.

"Well, yes, strange is to be expected," Brass replied. Glad in a huge suit of pistol driven armour, moving with the faint whir of clockwork with ever step, the woman was theoretically human, but probably in the same sense that Iyashi was theoretically a bird. The rampage armour hid her figure and her face - even her voice came out distorted - but was such a masterwork of clockwork machinery and ethereal energies that she always claimed everyone had to guess it was a woman's work. With a long rifle mounted to the right shoulder and a compact cannon slung under her left arm, it was almost easy to ignore the heavy two handed hammer she carried. Almost.

Perhaps even more notable was the black and brass robot, loosely human shaped, that followed her as she walked. A shield was attached to one arm, a long, pronged blade like a sai's angry big brother was attached to the other. The machine moved with the same quiet series of clicks and whirls, it's glass eyes scanning the area as it did.

The helmet turned and scanned the area. It was...dead. More so than any graveyard Brass had seen before. Life tended to like graveyards - mortals liked to stay away from them, due to the whole 'you're going to die!' reminder. Looking up revealed the carrion eaters. Either something big just died, she thought to herself, or they expect something to be dead shortly. Well, they'd have to peel her open with a can opener if they wanted the delicious meats inside.

"We have been sent to investigate a tomb famed for eating adventurers," she added after a moment, "By ancient and unknowable beings apparently bent on being pretty crazy. Trust me when I say I know world class crazy when I see it. 'Strange' is going to be a thing in this place."

Acting as carefully as she could, Brass headed down into the hollow. The statue in the lower area caught her eye, and she moved over to examine it. "What do you think of this?"

In the courtyard is a life-sized statue of a dwarf on a 4 ft. by 4 ft. stone block. He looks to have been a great warrior, and dwarven runes adorn the front of the pedestal. This rather large tombstone, crested with the statue of a dwarf, seems to have been visited frequently. The dwarven runes - translated by Iyashi - read “Blessed is he who spares these stones/And cursed be the man who moves my bones.” Examination of the base of the statue reveals a small, untrapped compartment that's easily opened... and within it is a single, small key.

"Well...huh." Brass glanced over at the others. "You may think me paranoid here, and many might agree, but since not dying is on my to do list today...how likely do you think it is that something is wrong with the fairly obvious key in the fairly obvious place?" Kneeling, the Machinesmith examined the compartment for traps.

As noted, it's untrapped and taking the key is quite simple. It's no more complex or dangerous than that.

Kei looks the key over, paying close attention to the way the light glints off it. "Not bones. Is fine!" he states in a contented voice, before looking around once more. "For door? Mausoleum?" the Tengu queries, blinking at his companions and gesturing towards the main building of the graveyard. His feathers seem to ruffle as he looks towards the mausoleum, and he squawks while motioning to the rest of the graveyard and surrounding area, "Check first! Enter last! Caw!"

Their hereto now silent companion finally speaks. He is a tall, lithe and apparently human man dressed in travel worn clothing and an obviously quality breastplate. From a distance he is a nondescript person, it isn't until you get close that you notice the only two things unusual about him; a faint tracery of lines like tattoos on his face and his eyes, which have an unidentifiable wrongness.
Alamar looks at the statue and then the key.

"I agree that we should heed the warning, but do either of you see what that key is supposed to unlock? Maybe it is not his bones that it leads to."

Then looking over at the mausoleums, he adds, "Which one first?"

But with no angry spectres trying to rip her apart, the armoured figure glanced around to see if there was something else horrible to deal with. "We'll go anticlockwise, unless someone objects?"

I know, it was just funny. I suppose you also use the term "contragravity" instead of "antigravity". Yes, it as a British thing. :)

Nine graves lie filled with fresh earth and makeshift markers (at G-2). Some of you recognize a few of the famous names, those legends of your own time — a grim foreshadowing of things to come. A tenth grave is present as well, only it is empty and freshly dug. Towering over it, a marble gravestone bears Alamar's name... and with a bit of a chill in your hearts, you move on.

The mausoleum (at G-5) is made of a sturdy green stone, unadorned by decorative carvings or the gargoyles that can be distantly seen on the roof of the main building. The doors are iron, and locked, but radiate no sign of magic - it would be quite possible to pick the lock if you wanted to look inside.

Kei reluctantly follows the others, looking uncomfortable. Though he can't make the same kind of facial expressions as the others, a single look in his deep black eyes shows worry and even the slightest signs of panic. "Caw! Bad omen!" he cries at the empty grave with Alamar's name on it, clutching his staff to his chest. He is quick to step away and head towards the mausoleum, his curiosity allowing him to easily pull his attention from the already-prepared grave.

Finding the entrance to the small mausoleum locked, Kei tries to peer through the keyhole. "Dark. Tiny," he simply states, before tapping his staff against the heavy iron door. "Can open?" he asks the other two.

The key you found before does not fit the lock on this mausoleum - you'll need to disable the lock with skill or strange magic if you want to get inside.

Alamar looks at the grave dispassionately, then shrugs and moves on.

"It's a common name. What happens, happens."

At the mausoleum:

"The only skill I have with locks is breaking them. If one of you has a better way...."
He looks expectantly at the others.

Turning her eye to the lock, she added, "I can possibly pick it. Let's take a look."

The interior of the building contains numerous old, thoroughly destroyed sarcophagi... perhaps the remnants of those who have come before you in search of treasure. Let's see... Galahad, I don't believe you've been in one of my games before, so here's the primer on combat. Once initiative is rolled, everyone who can act before the enemy (in this case, all of you) moves, and then the enemies all move at the same time. Once they've gone, the party goes again in any order. Actions are resolved in the order they're posted, not according to initiative, because PbP is too slow of a medium to allow for much else. Movements before the enemy actions are Round 1, movements afterwards are Round 2, even if you hadn't acted yet. This makes it easier to keep things straight. For easy encounters like this one, I generally won't be using a map - if you think you can do something, you probably can, and I'll let you know if something wouldn't work. You're also free to ask questions at any given time - please post them in the discussion thread or use a PM. Given the nature of this dungeon, I might actually end up using photo-editing or a VTT or something to record combat on, as opposed to my usual PbP-only style, and I'll keep all of you updated on that.

"And suddenly, rats," Brass muttered as she glanced over the rodents. With a grunt she hefted the huge hammer she carried. Made of rare and wonderful metals and enchanted by magic, even the armour's clockwork mechanism's giving her a boost of strength wasn't enough to make the thing feel light.

On the plus side, when it hit something it tended to leave little more than a stain.

1's are just an automatic miss. You've got enough stacked against you without potentially dropping your weapons on top of it. XD

Three attacks and two dead rats later, the remaining critters lunged forward to run and attack - three each went after Brass and Alamar. For some reason, the rats didn't seem interested in running straight at a giant bird...

...though they did provoke attacks of opportunity (as possible) when charging into the squares to attack. (For Attacks of Opportunity in cases like this, where I'm rolling their attacks now instead of waiting - which is a speed thing, given the limitations of PbP - you're assumed to be attacking them in the same order they attack you.)

All things considered, the biting rats weren't proving to be much of a threat... which probably shouldn't have surprised anyone.

Incidentally, this is one of those "you can't really lose unless you do something incredibly stupid" situations that I'll normally skip over - however, I figure the first battle should be played out so we're all on the same page and you can ask any questions you might have - better to resolve things now than in the midst of a life-or-death duel. Grappling her weapon back under her control, Brass swears at it and the rats trying to get at her. Her armour was meant to stop most things in it's tracks - rat bites were not significant.

"Obsidian," she called after a moment, "Get up here."

"Work, work, work," the construct muttered as it clanked to the fore. Still, it lashed out with it's odd weapon with mechanical precision and power.

It had taken less than thirty seconds overall, but dead rats quite literally littered the floor, leaving the rest of the mausoleum quite empty. It seemed there was nothing else here for you. There was still the mausoleum on the east - though there probably wasn't much there if it was anything like this one - as well as a well in a depression to the north and the main building down to the south.

EXP added to the campaign tab. Not much advancement to the next level - but then, it wasn't much of a challenge, either. XD

"He's right," Brass said simply. "We know going down the well is dangerous. Looking it down it should shed some clues, incase we have to use it to get in or out at some point. Plus it's a good idea to make sure that no one can, you know, climb out behind us in weird and bendy ways. I don't much trust wells."

Brass approached carefully, cautiously. She even pulled the huge, double barreled drone gun from her backpack and set it up. If anything did come out the well, the monstrous gun would make it regret it. She also directed Obsidian to keep close. Caution was the better part of valour, really.

Perception on the Well: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24

The ornately-carved well is located on the other end of the sunken graveyard, opposite the mausoleum. The finely crafted artwork of the well is diminished only by the horrific images of demons, devils, and undead things that form the bas-relief carvings. Runes and scribbling adorn the spaces empty of these carvings. Gazing inside, you can see large, grooved scratches along the interior stones, as if something tried to claw its way up the sides. The well ends in water some 90 ft. below.

"So, you have to ask yourself - who thinks, 'hey, there's a well full of scratches that appear to have been made by hell's own house, covered in demonic apparitions, let's climb down and see what's inside!' and never reconsider that as maybe a bad plan?" Brass shook her head, backing away and collecting the automated gun as she did.

"Alright, boys, where to now that we've established the well is a really bad plan? We have two tombs left, of we can go gather some information."

Brass nodded and headed towards the main building. Anything that involved not going down the well and being eaten by whatever lived at the bottom. If they couldn't find a way in from there, then they'd just have to check out town and see what could be found.

Kei caws in agreement, following after the other two. His eyes sweep the landscape, still on the lookout for trouble.

This is a huge stone building, its outer side carved in a grisly bas-relief of demons, devils and other creatures of the underworld. Hundreds of skulls have been carved into the stone. The building extends fully 60 ft. long and is over 40 ft. wide. There is a set of carved stairs leading down to a set of huge iron doors. Ringing the top of the building are numerous demonic statues made of a strange green stone. They seem to stare at you... probably because they actually are staring, and eight of them jump into the air as you approach the main mausoleum.

Initiative (Brass): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Initiative (Iyashi): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Everyone reacts fairly quickly, but the gargoyles - for that's what they seem to be - are faster than Alamar. They're currently sixty feet away from you, and well above ground level - it's likely only ranged attacks can strike them at the moment unless you decide to join them in the skies somehow.

Brass grunted slightly. Her left hand flicked out and the cannon below her arm unfolded. At the same time bracing struts unfolded on the armour's legs, bracing for the cannon's recoil. But the cannon took time to prepare.

On Brass' shoulder the long rifle also unfolded. It whirled around for a moment, the crystal lens it used to 'see' it's target tracking as a bullet was drawn from it's magazine. And then it focused on the closest of the flying creatures...and opened fire.

Round 1

Kei caws in alarm, shuffling over to place himself between his companions, before settling into a defensive stance as he channels his power into his staff. The same blade of orange-yellow force grows from the crystal, humming softly. He then spins the weapon around before bringing it back into his readied posture, squawking encouragingly to his companions as he does so. His eyes seem to glow purple for a moment, and an odd, warm scent seems to permeate the air around the group.

Kei moves 10 ft. to a place between Alamar and Brass (move action), forms his mind blade (free action) and then manifests Vigor (standard action, 6 PP, 78/84 PP remaining today).
Vigor: He spends 4 PP to give himself 20 temporary hitpoints, then another 2 PP to apply it to both Alamar and Brass as well.

Brass' bullet hurtled through the air, targeting one of the Gargoyles, and caught it right in the chest... where it blew off a small chip of the creature's stone flesh. Purely physical attacks might have a difficult time harming the creatures, given the natural toughness of their bodies.

Three gargoyles each shot down from the sky in a line on the far sides of Alamar and Brass, while the last two landed to either side of Iyashi, careful to avoid getting pinned between you. The mob of gargoyles reached out a moment later, not to attack you, but in a clear effort to grab you instead.

All of these provoke attacks of opportunity, by the way, if you'd like to try making them.

Rather fortunately, none of their attempts at grabbing seemed to have worked, but there were quite a few of them... chances were it was only a matter of time unless they could be quickly defeated.
