Wincing at the brutal, but needed, treatment of the lock Isen looked at the coins and vial. "How...odd. The coins are most unusual. I wonder if they're native to even this planet...?"

  • "Interesting vial. An alchemist can use it to combine their specialty potions into a potent concoction that applies both of their effects at once instead of ruining them both like what happens normally if you mix magic solutions. Too bad none of us can use it. I'm sure we can find someone interested in buying it though." Vincent tucked the vial away for safe keeping before taking a look at the coins Isen was inspecting. "Do they have any way of interacting with them, or is it just some form of permanent image? And based on our experience so far, I wouldn't be surprised if they were from off world. Seems like most things here just got dumped here on accident at one point or another."

Does the vial have an liquid in it, or just an empty vial? Also, adding the vial to my inventory for tracking, we can sell it off when we get to town. Isen, want to track the coins?

Taking a look at the holographic coins, she adds: "If nothing else, they are a novelty that SOMEONE will pay a decent sum for." to Isen's Synposis.
Just to be sure, Phai checks the box for hidden compartments. At least on her planet, storage units used to keep valuables were often designed in a way that allowed some to be hidden away.
"Aye, pity about the Vial. I wonder who's box this was and why it ended up here..." Phai looks at the Water, up-river. The state of the box suggested it's been in water for a while already, but something might still have disturbed it's rest and sent it on the path that lead it to them.
"Also, that was careless of us. Remember what happened when Plany opened a random box he found. Next time, we draw straws and don't crowd around it like some scrubs."

Looking over the coins, you estimated they'd be worth around 250 GP to a collector - although you'd have to find one who actually wanted them in order to sell them properly. Most places would view them more as trinkets than actual currency.

@Vincent: It's an Admixture Vial. Empty.

"Well, first another big bridge. Now, anybody want to bet on wether there's another fee involved in crossing that? Quite possible larger than the first one so people are trapped in between and forced to surrender their wares to get anywhere?", Phai suggested sarcastically.
She had not forgotten her Vendetta against the crime boss on the world they had come here from, and so far, this 'Baron' seemed to be on the villainous side of running things, as well.

"A cunning idea, but only sustainable short term." Isen smiled. "After a few months people would either take their wares elsewhere or simply have nothing left, and the locals would burn them out or suffer for it." Or at least try to. It was possible a strong enough force could last, but eventually, they'd tear themselves apart as prey came into short supply.

One way or another, you were going to find out... but perhaps not as soon as you would have liked. Dark clouds have started gathering just off the coast, and the wind picks up from a steady breeze to a strong squall. An occasional rumble of thunder sounds in the distance.

  • "Damn. That storm looks like it could reach us quickly, we should find some shelter. Maybe we can find a cave in the cliff face here? I don't know what storms were like on your worlds, but the places I've been, something that started up like that could be anywhere from a brisk wind and a light rain to scouring sandblasts and cascades of burning plasma. Probably best to play it safe until we know more about this place, right?"

"Agreed," Isen responded with a nod, looking for shelter. Hopefully, skin scouring winds would have been mentioned, as it would require rather tougher barriers than a canvas tent, but people tended to forget what they thought of as normal.

"Hm...my world had no such storms - but jagged mountain ranges. Even a small storm could be lethal if you end up trapped on a cliff. So while I hope this is a more temperate world as well, I concur that it would be wise to try and find some shelter!", Phai nodded, adding her own experiences with storms, then trying to find a place large enough to provide protection for the animals, as well.
    Survival (Assist?): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16

Alas, there weren't too many easily accessible cliffs in the area - though you might be able to dig in a little and try to get below ground level, where it would be safer. Much like your encounter with the elementals, it was likely that wearing (or being partly made of) metal could be a problem in its own right. Or a solution.

You didn't know enough about the local weather to have a sense for what was normal here, but you could tell that the storm was moving quite fast indeed, and would likely be upon you in just a few minutes.

    Male Elf Rogue 5/Sorcerer 1 - Witch 4 - Trickster 1 | HP: 46/50 | AC: 22 / T: 17 / FF: 16 | Fort: +4-1, Ref: +8, Will: +7; +2 Vs Enchantment | CMB: +4, CMD: 19 | Init: +4, Perception: +10 | Immune (Sleep) | Spell Points: 13/16

"If we truly need it I can create the illusion of some shelter," Isen considered, looking at the storm. "It will require concentration to maintain, and I'm not sure if this storm will simply rip it apart. But it should be solid enough to block normal weather." Of course, he could also use it to make any hole they dug more comfortable.

  • "It might help keep the camels from spooking. Unfortunately, I don't have anything in my magical repertoire to help, though I could help open up a shelter." Vincent retrieved his any-tool from his pack and folded it into a pick, and then a shovel. "If we don't find some kind of natural shelter, I doubt I could do much other than scratch at the dirt before that storm arrives. We may just have to press on hoping to find a place where the winds aren't too bad up ahead."

I assume we don't feel any different about our mythic abilities yet?

    HP: 37/40 | AC: 20 | Fort: +8, Ref: +8, Will: +8 | Hero Points: 3/3 | 25 feet speed | Perception: +6 Active Effects: none

"Hm, I don't think we have time to really dig ourselves a shelter. Storms seems to be moving fast. I'll try and see if I can pinpoint anything we could use as shelter..."
With that, Phai takes off, flying up in a wide spiral for about 20 seconds, then scanning their surroundings for any form of cliff or stone formation that could serve as protection against whatever elements that storm would bring to bear.
Taking some time looking, Phai then returns back down sharing her findings.
Willing to spend a minute flying up, scouting, then returning down. Taking 10 where necessary...24 perception and 22 survival to find something useable - or anything that improves our position over "wide open area".

You do not feel any differently about your mythic abilities. Of course, you also don't know if you would feel the change in their status... whether or not to test it on a regular basis is up to you.

This close to the river, the land was mostly rocks at its edge, then flatland. Plants were sparse, shelter more so, though any earth-moving abilities could probably create a better shelter (whether that was raising a dome above you or dropping the ground's level). Other techniques might also work, like using a metal weapon as a lightning rod.

    Male Elf Rogue 5/Sorcerer 1 - Witch 4 - Trickster 1 | HP: 46/50 | AC: 22 / T: 17 / FF: 16 | Fort: +4-1, Ref: +8, Will: +7; +2 Vs Enchantment | CMB: +4, CMD: 19 | Init: +4, Perception: +10 | Immune (Sleep) | Spell Points: 13/16

Isen gestured to the river. "With nothing better, I suggest we set up a lightning rod - maybe one of the spears we've gathered? - and ground it with the river. The water should be able to absorb any amount of lightning. Once done, the illusion of a wooden shelter will be better than nothing." It would keep the rain off, anyway, and hopefully the lightning rod would mean they didn't have to deal with a direct lightning strike.

  • Vincent raised his metal arms. "Any thoughts why lightning would be less likely to strike me, than the spear?"

Fair enough. Let's give it a shot and see what happens I guess. I'll try using a mythic power to cast tiny hut. If it works, awesome, we'll have shelter for a long time, and if not then at least we'll have learned that they still don't work.

"Hopefully the illusion will be enough to insulate you, and the weapon will be taller and as such the first pick, but if we have time we can set up more than one, giving it multiple choices." Hopefully, Isen thought. But they could be outside until lightning first struck, and each rod shouldn't take long to set up.

    Hopefully.

A surge of nausea hit Vincent's body as his spell failed - though he managed to quell the surge of nausea that came with it. Being partially mechanical may have had something to do with that.

Give me a... DC 12 Craft check (with a reasonably relevant skill), or a DC 18 Survival check, to try and set up an improvised lightning rod. Do note what exact items you're using for it.

Phai returns from her scouting..."There's no useable shelter anywhere nearby, and lots of lightning on the horizon...coming closer quickly. I think we could use the Syandi Spears as lightning rods...mix up some metal shavings with a bit of oil, urine or water and lace the shafts with it - we'll want the pack animals to stay calm and close to the ground, so we'd best tie them together in a circle. We can stay in the middle, use them as some shield against the wind....as for your arm, probably keep it flat to the ground, with the anvil nearby...but maybe not in the middle of the circle...-"

Meanwhile, Phai calmly tied the pack Animals together, in a circle. They probably were used to the weather...but they shouldn't risk losing their goods if one of the beasts got spooked by a nearby impact or something of the sort.
    15 Handle Animal if needed(Take 10).

As the poor weather approached, lightning flickered from above... then came down in a sudden torrent.

    Elec Damage: 5d10 ⇒ (2, 9, 9, 3, 4) = 27
    Elec Damage: 5d10 ⇒ (5, 4, 9, 1, 5) = 24
    Elec Damage: 5d10 ⇒ (10, 2, 7, 8, 10) = 37

    Elec Damage: 5d10 ⇒ (8, 10, 6, 8, 5) = 37

Improvised lightning rods could only do so much, though, and the spears looked quite thoroughly slagged by the time the storm continued on its way. As it left, you could see (and hear) more lightning bolts striking the ground, but they were no longer a threat to you. After making sure you're in no further danger, you set out again... and the weather remains clear as you reach your next destination.

A broad causeway of brown stone runs more than half a mile along the shore here with sea waves washing against the structure’s southern face. Part of the stonework seems blasted away—creating a yawning gap near a ruined gatehouse where a long flag of tattered green cloth still flutters in the breeze.

Watcing the lightning, Isen looked at Vincent's metallic sections and shuffled as far as the illusionary shelter would allow. He shuddered to think what that would have done without the lightning rod...

As they continued on, Isen looked at the ruined gatehouse. "A victim of the storm?" he wondered out loud.

Let's go check it out." Vincent dismounted as they grew nearer, not wanting to risk his camel spooking while close to the gap.

Are we walking along the causeway? Is there a way around the gap, or is it water on one side, cliff on the other, and just the causeway to walk on?

Paizo has been weird today. o wo And maps aren't always for battles... *Snickers*

There was no response from the gatehouse - of course, to actually get there, you were going to have to cross a gap that was about eighteen feet even at its shortest point.

Yeah, I keep getting logged out. It's a pain in my posterior.

Isen glanced down, looking to see how far the drop to the water was, but it was mostly out of curiosity. After a moment he tied a piece of rubble or the like to a rope, and tossed it across the gap until it failed to slide back. He didn't need it to be too tight.

Tying off the other end, Isen walked across the rope without any seeming issues, regardless of the fact it couldn't possibly hold him. Once he was across, he secured the rope correctly so the others could cross.

For the curious, Isen used Counterweight which lets him walk across liquids or string, so a rope that isn't fully secured isn't too big an issue.

  • I was curious! Cool.

Vincent was obviously impressed by Isen's hidden talents for... slack rope walking. However, when Isen tied it off and beckoned for Phai and him to follow, Vincent eyed the elf warily. "Is there anything a bit sturdier over there? I'm not so great at crossing tight wobbly ropes over ominous gaps. I think the camels might fare better than I would."

"Aye, the camels are the true problem...and the fact no one responds from that gatehouse. Isen, you want to take a look?", Phai suggested as she carefully tried to make her way over...she could fly, of course, but only a couple minutes per day, and she'd rather not waste those remaining if there was a different option.

It was true that camels probably weren't going to be able to make it across a rope. If lifts and jumps weren't possible, you could try the dry riverbed (and its rather steep sides).

Nodding, Isen took a look around the area, making sure not to go too far from the others. He had no wish to be ambushed. He didn't try and sneak, however - if anyone was here he had no wish to appear to be a thief or someone hostile to them.

  • Vincent watched warily from his side of the gap. He'd prefer to have been near Isen in case something happened, but he was far from helpless if an attack did come.

Phai approached the Gatehouse, calling out again, then, if there was still no response, making her way to the entrance and taking a look at it.
Locked? Trapped? Open? Taking 10 for 24/27(vs traps) perception.

Approaching, you see that two levered crossing gates close off the causeway near this damaged gatehouse. A single wooden door into the structure lies between the two barriers - and you see a few dried bloodstains on the door leading inside.

Isen glanced at Phai, and gestured for Vincent to join them. "I am beginning to suspect that no one will be interested in answering." The scout approached the door, listening carefully at the wood before gently opening the door.

  • Vincent eyed the tight rope with a doubting look. "No luck on that bridge then?"

Maybe I could tie a short rope in a loop about this rope, so if I fall I could just pull myself across...

"I am inclined to suspect you are right", Phai answers, pointing at the bloodstains with her spear.
"We should take a look inside, maybe we can either find out what happened here, or find a way to let our animals cross without risking them losing their footing."
