Mortimer returns from his fishing expedition and recounts his various catches.
"Well, I learned much, but I doubt it's anything new to anyone else... Hey, Sol. That's a really nice figurine you're shaping. Looks like Eidi."
~~~
Glad to welcome Eri in for awhile, Mortimer immediately notices something different about Eri but is unable to pinpoint it. He looks more pretty than before... maybe he got that headband of his upgraded? He smiles, shaking the Socerer's hand and clapping him lightly on the shoulder. "Good to see you!"
He nearly explodes when he hears of Eri's Druid neighbors. "Oh!!!" he shouts, hopping to his feet before regaining some composure. "Uh -- could we meet them? Maybe bring some root vegetables, greens and lots of fresh trap? Help with the cooking!? It'll be like camping, only fun!"
He spends the day picnicing with Solrisa at the Zoo before heading back to join the others for the meeting with Manzorian.
As Mortimer moves through Manzorian's study with the others, he eyes the very expensive dragonchess set. Did he say where he got that?
I guess we need this guy -- His thoughts derail as he lays eyes on The Rod. -- sadistic little magic man putting that out there like that. He frowns at The Rod. Still, good to know know it's still around.
"We have been striking swiftly, and with coordination, so that it will be too late, should word get out that they are now the hunted."
When Manzorian entreats him to speak, Mortimer returns the determined Archmage's gaze and he inquires (being the sociable bloke that he is) with sincere concern, "I humbly apologize, but who is the 'We' you speak of? All Archmagi? How many were out there? Are there lots of casualties on our side?"
~
"What shall we discuss next?"
He didn't have to see us. But, why does it feel like he's brushing us off?
SenseMotive: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (1) + 25 = 26"So, there's this island --"
[... Dragotha, Phylactery, Tilagos ... Druids ... ]
Mortimer nods. "Yeah, and -- what Ascaria said, too. If we destroy that phylactery, the Triad will lose cause."
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
"Have you learned anything more? The Ledger was a true find, the destruction of the Overgod a fortuitous victory. What shall we discuss next?"
Solrisa leans in.
"Have you ever been to Alhaster, Manzorian?" Solrisa leans in as if ready to whisper something salacious. "They have the most interesting looking angels that flutter there, keeping order. Did you know that?"
Solrisa will gossip about Alhaster and the Prince, telling Manzorian (again, possibly) about the cake that fell into Eidi's lap, laughing all the while. She doesn't have a lot of non-Rae stories, but this is one of her best.
* * *
Solrisa approaches Eidi with a big smile on her face and both arms behind her back.
"Eidi! EIDI!" Solrisa has a terrible poker face, but she's trying really hard not to smile *too* big, and she's failing badly. "Eidi, guess what I have behind my back! GUESS!!"
"I have no idea Solrisa. Mmmm... perhaps a huge pot full of cinamon cookies?"
Solrisa giggles at Eidi's first guess, her mirthful smile getting even bigger.
"No." Solrisa barely contains her glee. She awaits Eidi's next guess.
"A package with Andoran cheese?"
"Noooo!" Solrisa giggles happily again, her eyes bright and cheery.
"Taldor baked tentacles perhaps?"
Solrisa squees with joy because Eidi is unable to correctly guess her very good trick. And because Solrisa has so very few good tricks, never EVER EVER fooling anyone ever, she's enjoying her trick very much.
"NO!" Solrisa squees even louder, a look of pure rapture on her face. "I....have...YOU!" Solrisa pulls her hands from behind her back to reveal a miniature statue of Eidi, carved as he wished it.
"It's you! I have you! HA! I WIN!" Solrisa cheers happily and offers the statue to Eidi.
"Uh -- could we meet them? Maybe bring some root vegetables, greens and lots of fresh trap? Help with the cooking!? It'll be like camping, only fun!"
"I don't see why not. You've got me to vouch for you." Eri smiles genuinely, and claps Mortimer on the upper arm. "You'll just need to tell me when you plan on venturing out. If your memory's still sharp, we can meet at the old shooting range, before we set out." It's clear in Eri's mannerisms that he's not terribly interested in joining you in venturing out to the Fortress.
...
"What will we find at Tilagos?"
Success!
"Opposition, puzzle paths, and a portal, placed before you, a proving ground."
...
"I humbly apologize, but who is the 'We' you speak of? All Archmagi? How many were out there? Are there lots of casualties on our side?"
"'All Archmagi'? Heavens, no. I do have several apprentices, Eligos is such a one, and they all have their connections. The Triad is a shadow of its former self, and we've incurred very few casualties. Again, Eligos is a fine example of allies not lost to the cause. I'm sure the Triad has its means of resurrecting who they feel is important to their ranks, but they're more martyrs seeking the other side, aren't they?"
Manzorian speaks with blunt interest. He lost no attention during the gnome's debriefing on Alhaster, and seems genuinely interested in learning where the path leads.
"You warned us about Dragotha before. This travel to Tilagos is probably the only way we can find its phylactery and destroy it. But anything that can prepare us for Tilagos might be of help. Did you ever heard about the place? What do you know about the druids that created it?"
Manzorian raises an eyebrow. "Tilagos, you say? I wouldn't have thought it a genuine avenue. It's been whittled down to an old seaman's fanciful story. And yet, here you are, reviving it." The Archmage sits himself back into his chair, while he waves a hand in the direction of a bookcase, built for more largely binded tomes. Maps, to be certain, as one of them drifts purposefully to Manzorian's desk, and begins to open itself to viewing.
"So if you've any information about Tilagos that might be helpful we're all ears. Our plans include phantom chariots and controlled weather to ride out the worst of it. Do you think that will work, or do you have some other suggestion?"
Manzorian bids you approach the atlas on his desk. "This map defines Tilagos Island, as it was known to all, before the Order of the Storm sacrificed themselves, and brought destruction upon it. The storm itself is much smaller than this old schematic of Tilagos, so it always came across as a violent echo, much like the Eye."
Manzorian pauses to pull thoughts together. "The Order of the Storm was able to deny the worm god entrance into this world, those centuries ago. They sacrificed everything to do so. Whatever they did, it's as if they sought to slip from the collective memory." Manzorian pauses again, as a thought escapes him.
"Well, I suppose that will become evident, soon enough. It sounds like you have a decent approach laid out. Oppositional magics, against ancient druidic ritual magic. I can't say I envy your attempt. Antimagic fields are simply too small, and dispelling the magical storm has been attempted before, to no effect. A temporary suppression may do the trick. How long will you stay in Magepoint? I could attempt a spell to pull more knowledge regarding the legend that is the Tilagos storm. It might take several days for me to do so."
Manzorian gives you time to consider.
Eidi |
"Ah! You really got me Solrisa!" Eidi laughs eager to see Solrisa that happy. The half-elf takes the statuette softly from her hands "This is a marvelous piece of art Solrisa. Really! I will have it always with me. And once I pass away it will have a prominent space at my mausoleum"
------------------------------
"Just so you are prepared. I asked the gods their omens on what to expect from Tilagos, and what I got was 'Opposition, puzzle paths, and a portal, placed before you, a proving ground'" Eidi examines the map with interest "Some legends and lore could be of use, but I am not sure we have the time to wait. We already know by Lashonna that some are ahead on us on this quest. With a bit of chance I might be able to get magically into those legends faster than with long range study"
Before we decide if we wait, you should know Eidi can use now legend lore too and if doing so in the island, the casting time is reduced to 1d4x10 min. It is costly though, because it is an only wizard opposition school for him, but can be done.
Ascaria |
"Yes," Ascaria agrees with Eidi's suggestion, "I think we'd rather not wait a week if we don't have to. We're headed to Diamond Lake tonight, and perhaps tomorrow, or the next day, we'll head out to the island depending on where we leave the mainland from. I'm not sure what's the closest port. Do you have a suggestion?"
"But yes, we're already behind. We don't want to fall behind even further." He adds.
Mortimer Smith |
"The storm itself is much smaller than this old schematic of Tilagos, so it always came across as a violent echo, much like the Eye."
How could a map so dearth in detail NOT be real? Mortimer leans in and takes a closer look.
"'Violent echo'? I don't quite understand... The storm is much smaller scale than the island according to this map? Could the map's scale just be wrong -- or -- what if it's not a storm, but a rip in space between two universes? Now, wouldn't that be interesting to know?"
Mortimer stares intently at Manzorian. "Is there no way you can expedite the research?" he pleads.
Manzorian manages a raised eyebrow. "Returning to Diamond Lake? Attending personal business? Well, from there, I'd gather you would strike out to Tilagos from either Kintargo, or Vyre, if you're seeking to secure a ship. If you're following through with your phantom chariots, you'll probably just use the Silver City as a reference point before flying out over the bay."
"I don't think the map's scale is an issue. The Order of the Storm is the stuff of legend, so it wouldn't surprise me if the ancient land mass of Tilagos Island was obliterated in the storm's creation, leaving little if anything as land fall. Your pilgrimage will yield heretofore untold knowledge, hopefully. If you depart tonight for Diamond Lake, I can try and communicate with you over the great distance. I see no way of expediting my research into Tilagos or the Order. It will take time."
The conversation with Manzorian continues as long as the Outcasts see fit to exchange intelligence. Taking their leave from the Fortress, Magepoint welcomes any last-minute preparations before departure, including any arrangements to visit with Eri and his druidic connections.
Feel free to split between chatting with Manzorian, and departing for Diamond Lake, or anything between.
"'... what if it's not a storm, but a rip in space between two universes? Now, wouldn't that be interesting to know?"
Manzorian manages a raised eyebrow. "Returning to Diamond Lake? Attending personal business? ”Oh, well, we’re coming back here in the morning. We will spend at least part of the day chatting with some Druids that Eri discovered. We want to see if they have any inside information on the island, or storm, etc. Do you know them?” he describes the pair, wondering if they’re affiliated with the town in any way.
”Anyway, then we’ll do any final preparations and head out to Kintargo I guess, or near there anyway. Then onto the chariot and into the storm!” he grins looking at Eidi, ”We’ll be entirely in your hands for that portion of the journey my friend.”
He has nothing further for Manzorian, other than any druidical information he may possess.
Later, as they’re walking away from the meeting, back down the long causeway, he quips, ”So that went well. Might be he has some information for us at some future date. Hopefully before we learn of it ourselves!” he chortles. Once they’re free of Manzorian’s demesne, he turns to the group, ”So… ready to head out to our estate in Diamond Lake? Cedric is going to do a late supper for us and I have something to show you!”
His voice squeaks a little at the end and he clears his throat. Trying to calm himself he says more sedately, ”When we’re ready of course.”
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
Solrisa smiles. She’s always smiling around Manzorian. And Eidi. And Mort. And Ascaria. She just smiles, and eats, and laughs.
Because she feels a lot of joy and a lot of wonder in the everyday.
And she prepares to leave this place of joy and comfort to do more battle with evil. She’s ready to go.
She’s in such a good mood she doesn’t even mind when she not invited to special secret supper. Instead, she goes to happily polish her armor and her special blue booties.
"I see no way of expediting my research into Tilagos or the Order. It will take time."
As they ready to depart, Mortimer turns to Manzorian and says: "Just keep that rod safe."
"I think we can travel to Kintargo by tomorrow. I know the city... I was there during the Civil War..."
No! No boats! Mortimer "rushes" to keep up with the old half-elf. "Eidi, what do you suppose the gods meant when they said 'portal'?"
He runs slightly ahead of the party and starts walking backwards to address everyone.
”So… ready to head out to our estate in Diamond Lake? Cedric is going to do a late supper for us and I have something to show you!”
Mortimer stops in his tracks to regard the gnome, whose voice cracks with excitement.
"I can't wait to see it, I really can't but can you give me a few minutes? Maybe the Druids can help here, with Druid-Lore if nothing else... Eri said to meet him at the shooting range before we head out -- we can tell him when we'll be by so we can all plan. I can run over to meet him -- but what should I say? 'Tomorrow at 4pm'?"
Mortimer, if the others will it, sprints out to the old shooting range to make whatever arrangements suggested by the party with Eri, then sprints back.
As Eidi walks away to prematurely engage in craft before being persuaded by Ascaria into sharing a nice meal instead, Mort suddenly realizes something is off.
"Wait... something's missing. It's Sol. Where's Solrisa?" He looks about until he finds her sitting behind some crates about four feet away shining her armor. "Hey, Sorisa -- supper! Are you coming? Do that tomorrow morning! Come now, see what Ascaria has in store for us!"
Ascaria |
Eidi nods and smiles wide "Oh, yes, I am eager to have a tasty supper. Do you have anything in mind?" the elder leaves his toil for later and willingly enjoys a last supper before they begin their travel through the storm, or maybe through time and space, who knows.
"Let's see what Cedric has prepared for us!" Ascaria grins.
"I can't wait to see it, I really can't but can you give me a few minutes? Maybe the Druids can help here, with Druid-Lore if nothing else... Eri said to meet him at the shooting range before we head out -- we can tell him when we'll be by so we can all plan. I can run over to meet him -- but what should I say? 'Tomorrow at 4pm'?"
"Oh, even allowing for sleeping in, I don't think we'll be that long in Diamond Lake - unless we want to check things out locally - you know just to make an appearance. I figure we could meet the druids by noon, if they're not far from our teleportation spot. Tell Eri we'll meet him at the shooting range at noon, and we'll go from there, does that make sense?"
"Wait... something's missing. It's Sol. Where's Solrisa?" He looks about until he finds her sitting behind some crates about four feet away shining her armor. "Hey, Sorisa -- supper! Are you coming? Do that tomorrow morning! Come now, see what Ascaria has in store for us!"
"C'mon Sol, you'll miss the teleport!" Ascaria chirps in.
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
"Hey, Sorisa -- supper! Are you coming? Do that tomorrow morning! Come now, see what Ascaria has in store for us!"
Solrisa looks confused as it seems like she’s been non-stop eating for days. She looks up at the sound of the voice.
”Supper? Again!? OK!” Solrisa offers a big eager smile, happy to be included in things like supper and dinners, and cheeses. She gathers her stuff and runs to catch up.
”Oh! Where are we going? Is it some place with food!?” She seems very eager.
GM Rat Sass |
"Oh, well, we’re coming back here in the morning. We will spend at least part of the day chatting with some Druids that Eri discovered. We want to see if they have any inside information on the island, or storm, etc. Do you know them?”
Manzorian gives himself a moment to recollect. "We do have our share of pilgrimages through Magepoint. Plenty of all walks of life. I'm sure Cymria would know about present day visitors. I don't believe any residents of Magepoint proper are of the druidic ilk."
"Just keep that rod safe."
"As promised, Mortimer. And no, we haven't dealt with any antagonism from possessors of the Lesser Parts, if you were interested to know. We are ever vigilant."
...
Mortimer, if the others will it, sprints out to the old shooting range to make whatever arrangements suggested by the party with Eri, then sprints back.
He takes your message, and promises to discuss it over dinner with the couple. "I'm sure they'll see you, but I'm glad it'll be tomorrow, during the day. Unexpected night visits don't go over too well with Maxie." Eri angles his neck, to demonstrate a thin scar below his jawline. "She's old, but quite capable."
...
Once they are out of the fortress and the Outcasts have dealt with all their businesses and with Eri, the half-elf elder casts teleport for them to reach Diamond Lake as requested by Ascaria.
The whole of the Outcasts still on the dark, wormy path depart Magepoint, appearing just outside the Arkaner Estate, or what it might be called publicly, once you decide what you'd like to call it.
The Arkaner Estate glows with a warm inner light. Most of the windows are all curtained, the roof is well tiled and sealed, and the grounds have even begun to look well seeded and green. One window remains boarded up. The property line fence is a lovely mixture of wood and stone, and provides a decent amount of privacy from the common road.
Welcome back to Diamond Lake.
A disappearing shadow in an upper window hints at a watcher. About a flight of steps later, Cedric opens the door to the manor house. He’s impeccably dressed as always, as he bows slightly to the group, ”Lady and gentlemen, ah, welcome home.” He takes the party around the structure showing what’s been done, and what is yet to do. ”The estate is not quite yet complete as you can see, but the infrastructure is all sound. Really just window dressing remains, but that’s often the harder part to get right.”
He seems about to say more, when the tour ends in the common area. Piled on the middle of the floor are packs, designed to hang on the front, one for each person, including Eri, along with a few other satchels and miscellaneous boxes, crates, and kegs scattered around the room. Even about a dozen very finely crafted pool cues.
”When I prepared these I had not yet learned of Eri's departure, but I imagine you’ll need it anyway.” he explains regarding the extra pack. He turns to Ascaria, awaiting further instructions.
Ascaria |
Ascaria, giddily, says, ”Mort, would you carry Eri’s gear with your own please? And load up all this other stuff in your bag of holding - there should be plenty of room. Most everything is already in Cedric’s holding bag. It’s just not quite as big as yours.”
If he agrees, Ascaria helps Mort load it all up, including the pool cues. ”Is everyone ready? I want to show you something. Everyone pick up your named packs please.” He hoists his own as Cedric just nods, showing his readiness as he too collects two large heavy packs, one in front and one on his back. He’s stronger than he looks.
When everyone has their burden, Ascaria asks everyone to join hands. He then takes his time and prepares himself, thinking back on his sketches, and dreams. Then, very carefully, he casts his most powerful spell, Create Demiplane, three times in quick succession. As he casts, the party’s estate disappears!
You re-appear in an idyllic scene. You’re standing in a small garden outside a cozy looking two story structure made of stone and wood (link), covered in ivy. There’s a tiny creek flowing across from the northwest behind the structure which ends in a mist at the edge of the map to the south near the clearing at the entrance to the building. The sky too, while quite bright, ends in a mist not too far above your heads (30’ or so). You hear the sounds of small insects, though no larger animals or game exist here.
He looks around and smiles, ”I thought to have goats maybe for fresh milk and, eventually, cheese, but I think the bleating would get annoying. Maybe chickens. They’re not as loud maybe. Please, come in and look around!”
He excitedly walks the party through every room of the place, showing off what he has created. He suggests they set their burdens down in their respective private rooms. ”What you’ve just carried now is basically your bedding and whatnot.” he chuckles, ”Though Cedric has the bulk of the rest in his bag of holding and Mort has what’s left over!”
He then walks to the center of the structure, marked on a wall by an inset carving of Cayden Cailean, takes out a scroll of Hallow with Invisibility Purge, and the necessary components. He uses his Mnemonic Vestment to cast the scroll before tucking it away for use next year (material components spent).
”Eidi, can you cast the Mage’s Private Sanctum and Permanency spells now? Best we protect ourselves in as much as we can.” he grins madly at what he has wrought.
Cedric smiles at his masters excitement, and if he’s to be honest, he feels it himself. He’s never had a lord with his own plane of existence before. He bows his head to Ascaria and smiles at the others, ”We’ll have refreshments in the main bar in about a half hour if you’d like to get comfortable until then. I’m afraid the darts and dartboard are still being made, but I’ve most everything else here.” He gestures to a bag on his belt.
”Also, this may be a deeper issue, but there has been some, ah, vandalism. One night, late, a window in the estate, in Diamond Lake, was smashed by a rock, and the other, a dead animal was thrown in the farm's well. Perhaps a few other small signs of dislike. I have not had an opportunity to investigate. I have however freed myself as requested.” he bows to Ascaria, ”The foreman will finish with the house in a couple of days and secure the estate, so I may travel with you my lord.”
He heads upstairs to his rather large and already elegant chambers, dropping one bulging pack on the bed and another in the office. He’ll then head downstairs and takes some time emptying his type II bag of holding, filled to the brim with some 500 pounds of food, liquor, and more supplies for the kitchen as well as the billiards for the billiards table, a few decks of cards, dice - all manner of time wasters including a variety of miscellaneous books to sit on various shelves throughout the building - especially the study though most of its shelves are bare.
First he places a few entertainment materials around the main bar, then he returns to the kitchen and pantry where he assembles some light snacks and a selection of drinks on three large trays. Dutifully, he carefully carries the trays one at a time out to the bar area just on time as he said he would.
He then returns to the kitchen to get to work on unpacking and preparing for dinner, though he’s already done most of the prep, if he can just find the right box. He also keeps an ear open for any needs the party may have.
Eidi |
Eidi observes impressed at all the boxes laying around "Opa! You have been quite busy Cedric" the half-elf picks up the stuff assigned to him.
Likewise, Eidi extends his hands to join with the gnome "What is it Ascaria? Have you done a large drawing of our adventures? There is some woman you want to present us perhaps?" the half-elf winks an eye while he grasps hands as strongly as he can.
As they appear in the small garden, Eidi gasps in astonishment, he looks back once more at Ascaria and Cedric while he passes a hand through the ivy "Have you two crated all this? Wow! That is impressive!"
When he is presented with his own bedroom the half-elf sits in the bed and takes good measure of it by extending himself over it and smiling openly "I think I will put there a bookshelf and add a everburning lamp there in the desk. This is a great place for study, deprived of distractions. And there in that corner I can plant a small workshop to work as well"
As the group reaches the center of the structure, Eidi brings up a sheet of lead, a piece of glass, a wad of cotton, and powdered chrysolite and starts reciting words of arcane power to create a mage's private sanctum ward. Just next, he takes the diamond dust provided by Ascaria and says the words of permanency giving durability to the protection "I have to say this was a cunning plan Ascaria. We are now out of Lashonna's prying eyes, as well as our other enemies"
The elder walks around the playground, guessing some space to play magical chess and offering Cedric a wide smile of being pleased "Once you have finished your work with the state I can come back for you and teleport you with all us. You have proved to be a resourceful one, I am sure you can help during our adventures"
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
+1 to Cedric and Ascaria. All of it. That map is A+.
Solrisa explores the place, delighting in every nook and cranny. She jumps on the bed (really really jumps) and then runs squealing to explore more.
Eventually, he comes across the temple to Cayden. It's a very nice temple, she knows and believes. But also, there is something missing. She goes to find Ascaria, feeling somewhat uncertain.
"Uhm...Ascaria?" Solrisa smiles and smiles more, trying to be nice. "I found the temple to Cayden. It's very very nice. But...but where is the one for The Dragon? Shouldn't we also have one for The Dragon?" Her smile fades a bit. "You know my Mum betrothed me to The Dragon, and I am wed to him...and I should like a place to pray to him, so that he might look upon and me and I might feel his presence." Solrisa puts her hands behind her back, rolling on one ankle as she looks at the gnome.
"Is there a place for The Dragon? I can build my own shrine if you want. I can do that...if you just tell me where."
”Thank you Eidi. You’re absolutely right. In the pub, we cannot be scried, hell no one can even see into the windows! And you can only get to the plane through my spell, or via Plane Shift, and one of these!” He holds up a pair of tuning forks. ”Only I know the specific formula. Er, and the guy who made ‘em I suppose.” he says as he hands one to Eidi. ”Can you Plane Shift? If so, here, have a key to the pub.”
I’ll Plane Shift us in when we’re done adventuring for the day, and we can work or relax, sleep, whatever! Then in the morning, I kick us all out, except Cedric of course, and we’re back where we started. Easy!”
He laughs, ”Well, I mean it’s a lot of high level spells just for a good sleep, but I think it’s worth it!” Ascaria sips his ale, freshly poured and well foamed.
”I think we should convert the spare bedroom to your workshop Eidi. Give you more room to spread out your tools and whatnot. And we’ll need to get some good books and such for the study. Right now it’ll be mostly full of stuff that Cedric likes!” he chuckles.
"Is there a place for The Dragon? I can build my own shrine if you want. I can do that...if you just tell me where."
”Sure Sol.” Ascaria grins thinking, ”Would you like a nice shrine in the garden by the house somewhere? We could top it with a statue dedicated to the Dragon if you liked. I’m not sure exactly what he, uh, looks like, but we can certainly work something out. I’m also fine sharing the Cayden shrine space if you want something inside and don’t mind his smiling visage across from your Dragon. It’s not a large room, but we could easily fit three shrines in there if we really wanted to.” He looks to the Mort and Eidi to see if they have any religious needs as well.
”This is our space, so let me know what changes you’d like and we’ll make it happen. I was going to commission a small statue of Cayden to go on my shrine, I just haven’t gotten around to that bit yet.”
Well done, Ascaria. Nicely crafted.
The Outcasts enjoy Ascaria's Pub, fleshing out their private quarters, their centers of worship, and getting to know Cedric the Pubmaster above and beyond their initial introductions since Magepoint. Though Space may feel removed from the Material Plane, Time certainly continues to flow as the Pub springs to life, for drink and food. Eventually, the Outcasts depart, giving Diamond Lake some consideration, before returning to Magepoint, and seeking out Eri and the druids.
...
The countryside surrounding Magepoint is almost alien by comparison to Ascaria's Pub, and Magepoint proper. Eri never stumbles in his guidance through the woods, having become quite familiar with the territory in his absence from darker pursuits.
The Huntsman Mage meets with you at the shooting range, a couple of gophers already bagged, and leads you through the forest for the better part of an hour. A small creek turns into a robust waterfall, a robust waterfall descends along an intimate rocky valley, and an intimate rocky valley leads to dense forest copse which camouflages a private cabin built within living trees. It is here where you meet Valeris and Maxie.
The druid couple is welcoming. Valeris is grizzled, and bears several marks of time. A punchy sparrow attends his shoulder, and keeps its black eyes fixed upon each of you. Maxie sits quietly on the porch, a cast iron tea kettle at her side, sitting upon a serving table.
Valeris addresses you on approach. "These the folks you mentioned, eh, Madrigal? Well, let's see to them and their concerns." Eri turns to you. "They call me 'Madrigal'. A little play on Nandri. That, and they caught me singing over a roast."
...
What stands before you is the travel from Magepoint to Tilagos Island, having concluded your business with the Ahionns, druids at large.
Should Eidi take the reins, then the approach to Tilagos Island will require a simple demonstration of arcane power to Control Weather.
I'll need a Caster Level Check, please.
Eidi accepts the perfectly attuned fork and stores it in his components pouch "Well forsighted"
The elder nods at Ascaria's plan quite pleased "Definitely more lively and less cramped than my old rope trick. Specially having a fully prepared workshop for crafting"
When talking about shrines Eidi takes his hand to the eye medallion hanging from his neck "Aroden taught us the power lies within our human hearts enlightening our actions" he makes a thoughtful pause before adding "But I am happy to help building a nice meditation garden with beautiful dragon statues for you Solrisa and provide protections for Dahak not to find out about this place"
For the rest of the day Eidi works in the crafting of his belt, completing its enhancement before going to sleep. The elder makes regular pauses for drinks, food and enjoying the lively company of his friends.
-----------------------------
During the meeting Eidi will profit to enjoy this little parenthesis before things go darker. The elder has learnt one has to profit such recesses of life. He laughs with Eri and the others and tries to learn more about Valeris and Maxie, trying to figure out if they might know something about Tilagos "Are there any druidic legends about the Library of Tilagos or the Order of the Storm itself? If we find any druidic stuff we cannot interpret, would you allow us to contact you for advice?"
------------------------------
Teleport error: 1d100 ⇒ 51
Once the meeting is concluded, Eidi will cast a second teleport to transport the Outcasts to Kintargo. The Silver City he walked during Cheliax Civil War. There he helps the party to look for a calm place of departure, using the phantom chariot he has prepared to travel with the team.
"Ok, this is our ticket to Tilagos, let's see how we do. Would you like to drive the ride Mortimer?" Eidi tries to grasp strongly at the chariot and the giant man to avoid falling to the water.
Once the group approaches to the tempest, Eidi uses control weather to try appease the storm and open a save corridor for the Outcasts' charriot.
”Would you like a nice shrine in the garden by the house somewhere? "
Solrisa claps her hands, cheering, then gives Ascaria a big hug, squeezing with her man hands.
"Oh yes! That would be perfect! I would love that! I'll craft a proper statue or icon for The Dragon when I can source the ivory or nice hard cheese! This will be perfect! Oh thank you! I will like staying here!" Solrisa seems quite giddy and will let Ascaria know what she thinks she needs as soon as she figure that out.
Ascaria is enthusiastic about Sol’s ivory statue plans. ”We’ll have to keep our eyes open in the larger markets for possible raw materials for the statue Sol.”
In the morning he wakes to the smell of coffee - and he didn’t have to make it! He’s going to like this. As he prepares for another holy breakfast, courtesy of Eidi, he heads to the common area and sits down at a table. He takes a few things out of his haversack and makes sure to give them to Cedric.
”Cedric, here’s some more gold, two thousand, to cover any expenses you may have had in addition to the money I gave you earlier. Just let me know if you need more, and make sure to get yourself whatever you want as well, aye. I picked up that masterwork recorder you asked for. Also, here’s that ring we discussed with mage armor loaded as a second level spell.”
”And another thing! We picked up some rather fine rings of protection, so I’d like you to have my old one. I don’t expect you to see any combat or anything like that, but one should be prepared.”
Over breakfast, Ascaria wonders, ”Since we have a few hours before our druidical meeting, shouldn’t we stop into town and see why folks might be arrayed against us? I don’t care all that much for our estate there, but it would be a shame if someone torched it out of misplaced hatred. Might also give us some clues overall.”
He’d like to walk about the town and see what’s going on.
He also prepares as usual. Ascaria ensorcels the shields of the party (Magic Vestment (+4 on Ascaria, Mort, and Sol)). He'll then watch over his friends (Status (Eidi, Mort, & Sol)) and refresh everyones Life Link just in case. He’ll also cast Wind Walk on the group out of general paranoia.
”Madrigal aay?” Ascaria says with a raised eyebrow, smiling at Eri in his new life. He turns to the couple, ”Well met. I”m Ascaria. Eidi here is right about our inquiry. We’re headed into the teeth of the storm, and wanted to know what you might know about it specifically. Or generally, what should we prepare for?”
He takes out a fine bottle of wine, lifted from the pub ’cellars’ and offers it to the druids by way of greeting.
"Are there any druidic legends about the Library of Tilagos or the Order of the Storm itself? If we find any druidic stuff we cannot interpret, would you allow us to contact you for advice?"
"Well met. I'm Ascaria. Eidi here is right about our inquiry. We’re headed into the teeth of the storm, and wanted to know what you might know about it specifically. Or generally, what should we prepare for?”
Valeris listens to the questions, obviously interested in knowing the purpose of the visitors, but he's more interested in inhaling the vapors of his newly brewed tea. When he holds a palm up to Ascaria, in quiet declination of the wine, he seems to be doing so for both of the Ahionns. His gaze travels to Maxie every so often, as the midwife takes hold of the inquiry.
"I couldn't tell you much about the storm itself, I only know it's formidable, out there on the waters, and you should pray to Gozreh for safe travel, should you attempt sea travel. I never much liked sailing."
Maxie brings her cup to Valeris, who fills it. She takes a sip, and nods to her husband, who smiles proudly.
"Now, if you're talking about the Order of the Storm, you should have visited decades ago, when my memory was fresher. As it sits on the shelf to this day, you'll have to content yourselves with what I can remember. Most relate to the stories of the Fountain of Dreams they were said to have created. An artifact, a goose chase, a bard's riddle... I trust that their purpose was a dire one, one so important they were willing to give their lives for it. So I don't try to remember their creation, I remember their names. Tylanthros, Beskawahn, Thadimar, and Sayren-Lei. Tylanthros was said to sway the very volcanoes to calm, with his words. Beskawahn fought alongside great herds in their defense. Thadimar enjoyed his transformations into elemental forms and routing great swarms from harming the human populations. And Sayren-Lei, well, they say that it's largely his great ire against all things unnatural that brought about the eternal storm. Their mutual trust, and their dedication to subverting the great plague of their day... it's awe-inspiring, don't you think? Great epic tales of times long forgotten." She pauses for a moment, fishing for a thought until something tugs on her line.
"Their place in history, it feels so... slippery. When I think on their names, even now, it feels like when my mother would place her fingertips on my eyelids, tucked into bed. Their names become the gentle shushes of a parent seeking to send you off into a deep and peaceful slumber. It is certainly strange for the likes of you to bring the Order of the Storm from the depths of ancient memory."
...
The approach to Tilagos feels like the day slipping away into night, over the course of a few hours. Soaring above Kintargo, it doesn't take long for those in the group whose eyes can pierce the clear coastal airs, seeking the Storm. You find it with little struggle, as you're drawn to the blackness that beckons no one.
Eidi takes his cue in proximity, seeking to still the storm, and casting his magic for what good it might do. The elder half-elf is wreathed in a ghostly mist, which infuses his casting, and the storm obeys.
You are not alone here. There stands someone behind you, his hand on your shoulder, and his presence strengthens your magical power. For this casting, you are not merely an old half-elf, straining against the very seas. You are a Wind Duke, and the winds will heed your call for peace...
The Phantom Chariot races through the airborne maelstrom, and eventually, your eyes alight upon a seashore, great rocks jutting from it like an orc's tusks.
The beachhead is littered with driftwood and the splintered ruin of well over a hundred ships. These skeletal wrecks crowd the rocky shoreline, a veritable city of barnacle-claimed vessels peopled with dead sailors. Broken skeletons wrapped in threadbare rags hang out of yawning breaches in the ships’ hulls, and tattered sails whip in the fierce winds sweeping the shoreline.
One ship stands out from these weathered hulks—a recent victim of the wind and rocks, although a victim nonetheless. This gigantic sailing cog lies broken in two against a jagged rock on the eastern edge of the beach. Beyond the shore, the rocky beach angles up slightly to an ancient maze of ruined walls and standing stones.
Welcome to Tilagos Island.
Do we teleport into the shrine, or what? Is there a door? But seriously -- great job!
Mortimer shrugs and takes both his own pack as well as Eri's. What does the bigger little guy mean -- 'Window dressing'? There's plenty of curtains... and they match the throw pillows. ... What is all this about? Where are we going? ... Nothing to worry about I guess, Ascaria is estatic about it...
He takes Sol and Eidi's hand as instructed and becomes curious as the air turns humid and fresh with the burbling of a creek nearby. "What? No way -- What? What just happened?! Ascaria! Where are we?" He catches a firefly and presents it as proof something very unique has just transpired. He follows the others into the pub.
"We’ll have refreshments in the main bar in about a half hour if you’d like to get comfortable until then."
Beer? He eyes the bar, hesitating. This is way better than The Emporium ever was!
"Also, this may be a deeper issue, but there has been some, ah, vandalism. One night, late, a window in the estate, in Diamond Lake, was smashed by a rock, and the other, a dead animal was thrown in the farm's well."
Mortimer shifts his gaze from the tap to Cedric. "Well, then -- perhaps we'll pay a visit back to -- uh -- here? -- to Diamond Lake. Make sure everyone there knows we're a clear and present ... presence."
He trundles down the hall to his room and makes his bed, then sits on it regarding the space. What am I going to do with all this space? he wonders, not really being all that fond of things for keeping. Maybe I'll find things to tack onto the walls... useful things. He begins making a list of things to collect.
~~~
Ascaria sips his ale, freshly poured and well foamed. He looks to the Mort and Eidi to see if they have any religious needs as well.Eidi wrote:"Aroden taught us the power lies within our human hearts enlightening our actions"
Mortimer folds a piece of paper into a tight triangle. He sets it on a corner vertically on the bar and poises it under his right index finger by the opposing corner. He then flicks the back of it with his left index finger and watches it sail over the bar between the necks of two whiskey bottles. He throws his arms up in victory and responds, "I'm good. Beer is good! Oh -- are there any magics that can keep a thing spinning in place forever?" He retrieves the paper and continues playing.
Unsure about forest people, he mainly keeps quiet during the Druid meeting. Can Valeris even talk, or does a tree have his tongue?

Mortimer takes the reigns of the Chariot and steadies the Elder Half Elf as they bolt toward Tilagos Island. He draws the Chariot to a halt and disembarks regarding the shoreline.
"Hmm, dismal place, this." He begins heading for the most recently stranded ship. "Do you suppose this one here bore anyone we'd know?" He casts about for signs of life leading to or from the ship.

"Eidi, what do you suppose the gods meant when they said 'portal'?"
"Maybe it was a reference to the Library doors... or perhaps it had a metaphorical sense in that we will have to cross into another level of knowledge or consciousness to discover how to stop the Age of Worms" Eidi shrugs "Perhaps it just means we will have to go into another dimension of reality or time in order to find the phylactery"
Eidi listens with great interest the memories of Valeries, or at least what is left of them "Most interesting... it seems like if what is left of the island has been removed from your memories, isn't it?" not wanting to trouble more the druid with the strange feeling, the half-elf just keeps eating and enjoying the cheerful conversation.
----------------------------------------------
Eidi feels the help pushing him forward and suddenly his eyes go blank while the ghostly mist surrounds him. His tanned face becomes grey and the clouds finally surrender opening a tunnel for the Outcasts to reach Tilagos.
Only when the chariot gets out of the clouds Eidi's black moated eyes come back and he seems to recover his full consciousness "So here we are, Tilagos! The place of mystical legend out of maps and men's memory..."
Observing the overall landscape of the island Eidi points to the recent ship wreckage "Where shall we begin our explorations? Perhaps there?"

”This is my own plane of existence. I created it. Created it out of nothing but the raw power made available to me. It’s our own place, safe, mostly, from outsiders. Well, safe from most folks anyway,” he grins.

”Like that paper? I don’t think so. There is a rod that you can put anywhere, even in mid-air, and when you push the button, it stays. Immovable that is,” he says seriously. ”But it doesn’t spin. There are ioun stones of course, but they spin around your head. Some are quite useful.”

Solrisa grasps Mort's hand *very* tightly in her own man-hands until they clear the storm and arrive where they should. She stands for a few moments to collect herself in her new surroundings, only then does she release Mort's hand from her steely grip.

She goes to a height of 20' and moves ahead of the chariot, attaching her shield.

Eidi |

While still at Ascaria's demiplane, Eidi prepares in meditation to strengthen his defenses. He asks Cedric for a bowl or dish where he places a pinch of silver and the eyelash of a lamia. On top, he plants the wonderful ivory statuette that Solrisa crafted out of him. The half-elf looks satisfied taking back the ivory statuette and giving back the bowl to Cedric "Thanks" Noticing some scorch signs he smiles casting a prestidigitation to clean it.
Later Eidi approaches Mortimer to talk with him. After some questions about the divine and the magic he proposes him "Would you not like being able to use the magic yourself? Ascaria and Eri are powerful on it, and even Solrisa has the Dragon blessings. If you are willing I could teach you a couple of tricks"

A little light retcon
Ascaria's desire to visit Diamond Lake proves fruitful. Governor Neff is away from the town on business in Egorian, so Sheriff Jamis avails himself to the Outcasts. Cedric has not been idle on the subject matter at hand, Jamis points out. He has been quietly observing the community, giving his deputies the coin to enjoy themselves at both the Emporium and the Feral Dog off hours to listen for gossip or braggadocio. Jamis admits that the Arkaner Estate has received its own nickname about Diamond Lake- 'Black Drak Shack'.
The Sheriff reassures you that he'll keep an ear to the ground, and can let you know of his recon when you return next to Diamond Lake...
...
Back to the Shores of Tilagos
Solrisa is the first to take to the air above the beach, empowered by her Boots, while everyone generally assumes their positions based on Ascaria's gift of Air Walk. The Phantom Chariot can be brought to a stop anywhere along the beach head. It's only been a half of an hour, so the ghostly steeds snort in mimicry of real-life horses, awaiting their next leg of the journey.
Mortimer shoots a look towards the broken ship, and can see signs of movement along the shore and within the hull where light finds it.
"Halt!! Come no closer!! You have no business here, go on about yours!!"
From the bow of the broken ship, you spy an orc who has clearly spied you. He makes obvious to you the javelin in his left hand, while he wears hide armor. Mortimer is also aware of a second orc on the beach, not too far away. There is further activity in the shadows of the ship, but obscured enough to evade a headcount...

"Greetings my friendly orc! It seems you are shipwrecked and perhaps we can be of assistance. Surely in trying times such as these, we should all try to help each other out a little!"
Ascaria keeps going closer, not wanting to shout. It's hard on the voice box! That and he wants to see the other orc on shore.

Eidi performs a blessing of the faithful sign to bolster Ascaria's attempts. The half-elf waits at the back of the party while giving an eye at these orcs.

"Where there orc sailors at the ship of Heskin and Darl Quethos?" he whispers for the groups ears.

Mortimer Smith |

Mortimer only notices Sol's death grip as they arrive safely on the island. Unsure if she will shatter if he moves, he holds his breath and waits for her to disengage herself before resuming time.
"Whoahaha --" Mortimer laughs and squirms when Eidi touches him. "That tickles!" His eyes fill with wonder and excitement when he realizes that he can now cast spells. "Thanks, Eidi! I ... can't even begin to describe what this feels like. Sparky -- like flint hitting a dagger, or something."
"Halt!! Come no closer!! You have no business here, go on about yours!!"
"Hrm. Orcs letting us go about our business? What do you suppose they're hiding. I don't recall seeing Orcs on the ship Heskin was on, but it's not impossible."
"Hey!" He shouts back smiling amiably. "Is there a problem? It's not like we're friends with Mariss Quemp, or anyone else you hate. You need some hands?" He holds up both of his empty hands and flips them forward and backward a few times to give the orcs a good view of both sides.

Solrisa Iome Arabasti |

Solrisa pauses in her flight both for air walk, and then again for that Ascaria can begin diplomatic relations.
"Yeah, we mean you no harm! We're kind of nice. And have nice foods to share if you want!" Solrisa promises, backing up Ascaria's words.

"Yeah, we mean you no harm! We're kind of nice. And have nice foods to share if you want!"
The javelin bearer lowers his weapon at the volley of words coming from the beachhead. He's clearly weighing the Chariot and Outcasts against his destroyed vessel, so he nods while holding up a hand.
"You keep your distance, and wait there!!"
He disappears behind the broken wood, returning just behind another, bigger orc. This one sports studded leather, and holds a composite longbow at his side. His black eyes take you in, before he mutters to his crew mate. The javelin orc nods, and returns below broken deck.
"We weren't expecting guests." The very large orc looks towards Solrisa, while speaking to the entire Chariot contents.
"I don't see how we can help you, so we have nothing to offer you, should we accept your help. We don't want any trouble, so perhaps it's best you go on your way."
Another orc makes herself known, standing on the beach, coming into view for all of you. She looks back to the biggie on the bow, and awaits your response.

Solrisa keeps her distance, running her fingers through her blonde hair in the sunshine.
”Are you sure we can’t visit? We have stories to tell. And Eidi might share some of his cookies! He has very good cookies!” Solrisa asks, trying to find a way to chat in a friendly way.

"Oh, we're not looking for any payment, excepting perhaps a little light conversation. Quite an island huh? Do you have a way to get back off it? We could help you there, if there aren't too many of you." Ascaria inquires lightly trying to be helpful.

Eidi |

"What were those orcs doing so far into the sea? This is strange..." Eidi whispers to the group, before approaching a bit to talk.
"Did you arrive in that ship? It does not look good. How did you end stranded in the island?" then looking far away from the beach he adds "Have you explored it? What does lay ahead?"

GM Rat Sass |

The mountain of an orc holds up a hand, as if deflecting the series of questions. "Alright, alright. You're here, like the rest of these unfortunate wrecks, looking for the same powerful thing that no one's been able to bring back. Except you're not. Like the others." The orc points at the hovering Chariot.
"I can't argue with you. Our ship is going to take some time to make seaworthy. We have wood on the beach, and we have some time, though not a lot of it. I've got eleven hands, including my own."
"This is my ship. The Secret Hand. I'm its captain, Grogriss Spit-Eye. We were hired to travel here, through there. Had no idea the rocks would come out of nowhere and bite us in half." The orc cocks his head towards the elderly half-elf.
"Sure, we've taken to the island, explored it a little bit. Lost one of ours to the angry rocks with teeth and lashes. Once Merder dropped dead, we came back to the beach, and here we remain."
Grogriss looks at Solrisa. "So, any of your stories gonna get us back to Kintargo in one piece?"

Solrisa Iome Arabasti |

"So, any of your stories gonna get us back to Kintargo in one piece?"
Solrisa looks confused, not having any many good stories, let alone one that will get Grogriss back to Kintargo.
”Well,” Solrisa moves forward smiling, trying to remember a good story. ”Well, I have a sister named Rae. And I loved her so much. And she is the best sister there ever was. Uhm...this is a good story, I promise. Let me just remember more...” Solrisa thinks more. ”And she had my doll. I know it was my doll because it had a blue dress on, you see? And that’s my doll. And Rae had accidentally put hers in the fire, I think because she was hitting it in the air with a stick and yelling angrily about something. I don’t really remember but Rae was really good at hitting things.” Solrisa pauses and smiles at her memory of dear Rae.
”Well, she had burnt her doll and her dress got all ruined and I was sorry for Rae because somethings things happened or got broke when Rae was angry, you see?” Solrisa pauses to ensure the orc is listening to her very good story. ”She was sad about accidentally burning her doll and I was sad too because no one likes it when dolls get broken.”
”In the morning, we got up and I noticed that my doll had been burnt too! I knew it was my doll because it had on the blue dress, which was not burnt! I still loved my doll and I noticed that Rae’s doll was no longer burnt! She said that a magic fey witch had come and fixt her doll but the magic fey witch had to leave before it could also give Rae a new doll dress...so it was naked!” Solrisa’s face knots with confusion. ”I’m not really sure how my doll got burnt, except that it wanted to be like Rae’s doll, so they could still be friends, but no matter, it still had on its blue dress, which was very nice. And Rae’s doll was fresh and new, just like mine had used to be.”
”So you see? Everyone was happy.” Solrisa smiles at her happy story.
”Yes, I know, this didn’t get you back to Kintargo, but it was a very good story. If you want to get to Kintargo, you should speak to Eidi for cookies. He can also zap-zap from here to there, very easily. He might be able to get you home.”

Mortimer Smith |

Mortimer nearly raises an index finger at 'I've got eleven hands, including my own. This is my ship. The Secret Hand.' to ask if the ship counts as the eleventh hand, or if it is in fact the twelveth hand, but is derailed by:
"Lost one of ours to the angry rocks with teeth and lashes."
Wwha? .......
Still trying not to look intimidating while Solrisa finishes her story, he asks "By 'lashes', did you mean the eye kind, or the whip kind?"
"Uh, because -- you know -- there are both kinds, and then some..."
"Who exactly hired you?"

Ascaria |

Ascaria nods at the captains misfortune as Sol tells her story. When she’s finished, he turns to the captain, ”I don’t want to break the mercenaries oath by asking who hired you, though I am curious along with Mort. Instead, I can offer you and yours any healing you may require. I may not be able to fix your ship, but I’m good with bone and sinew, should any of you be wounded.”
He thinks a little further, ”If you’re between engagements, perhaps we could hire you! Nothing major mind you, just watch our backs and raise the alarm should anyone else come to this isle while you prepare your ship for its return voyage.”
”That is, if you’re between engagements of course. I can send word to someone in Kintargo if you wished. I have a spell called Sending...” and he'll go on to describe how it works.

GM Rat Sass |

"By 'lashes', did you mean the eye kind, or the whip kind? ...Who exactly hired you?"
Grogriss can't seem to decide whether or not to be relieved at the giant's attempts at squeezing him, as it gives him something to shift to, from the maiden's story. After a minute of dialogue from Mortimer, Grogriss Spit-Eye relents.
"You think I'm interested in eyelashes? You're just as addled... of course I meant the punishing kind. You know, flogging? Whips to strip the flesh from the back meat." The mountainous orc flinches as the giant pointedly asks about a possible employer. He doesn't even glance at Ascaria when the gnome tries to ease the conversation back a bit with an offer of healing.
"Something tells me you already know, but I'll tell you. Darl Quethos. He's a priest of a god I never heard of. You're courting death, if you're trying to follow him." Grogriss sets his bow down, freeing his hands to rub them down.
"He hired us a week ago, to try and make this voyage. Paid us well, too. Hazardous journey, and all. Promised us more upon arrival, but the cur abandoned ship without paying. Probably abandoned us altogether. I'm not proud- glad to be done with him. Him and that... thing he carries. A shriveled hand you'd toss away, but not him. Not that thing."
Only when he's satisfied with his obligation to Mortimer does Grogriss address the gnome.
"I've got several injured. If you're offering a priest's healing, you come below, and tend to my crew. If you're paying for lookouts, then I'd swear you to seeing me and my crew returned to Kintargo. The Secret Hand was tip top before we entered that damnation. We could take our chances in the return, of course, but you're offering..."
Grogriss is describing Ropers, chaotic evil Large Aberrations. By the orc's accounting, they must have encountered a Cluster (3-6 of them). They are ambush hunters by nature. They can alter their appearance to look like boulders or stalagmites, certainly the rock formations Grogriss describes.
Two questions, Eidi. Others can ask 1 question for every 5 points above 22...
"Angry rocks you say? Are they living in the mountains? What are the ruins? Did you reach there?"
Grogriss continues to look at Ascaria, but still answers the elderly half-elf. "No mountains here. We tripped across them halfway through the maze. That's as far as we got."
