I think I'll have to do some homework on rangers and get back to you.

Quote:
What kind of government does Avonali have, e.g. kingdom, republic, etc?

It's a kingdom, although mayors/city councils and other wielders of authority have a good deal of autonomy.

Quote:
Who organizes its military, e.g. the king, nation, individual nobles?

Cities and nobles are allowed to have their own militias, though any such force is subject to being called upon to fight alongside the royal army in times of need. Speaking of which...

Quote:
Who organizes its fleets in Korkas?

Since Korkas' livelihood depends on its role as an overseas trade hub, its own city militia includes some ships capable of fending off pirates and whatnot. But since Avonali doesn't have much coastal territory other than Korkas, there's no naval force on the national level.

Quote:
What kind of government does Korkas have?

As a rather large city, it is run by a council rather than a single mayor. Merchant guilds and other movers and shakers in the realm of commerce can sometimes exert significant influence over who gets a council seat and what they do once they're there.

Quote:
What other governments/people have fought wars with Korkas or Avonali in the past 60 years?

No open wars in that time, although about 30 years ago a significant piracy threat showed up, and there were suspicions of a connection to the nation to the south (we'll call it... Vodha?) that led to some diplomatic "saber rattling", but no armed conflict.

Quote:
Do the Water Elves have a central or decentralized government of its settlements?

There are no racial governments in this setting. Now, a small enough settlement might be nearly (or completely) uni-racial, but by the time you've got enough of a population to be talking about "governments" (even if it's just a mayor), there's going to be multiple races present. That said, you'll find higher representations of water elves among populations situated closer to water.

Quote:
Who/what are their natural enemies?

If you're meaning something like the classic "elves vs dwarves" thing, there's not too much like that going on. If you mean more broadly, well, they're not fans of deserts or volcanos.

Quote:
Who controls Linhaus?

Linhaus is run by a mayor.

Quote:
Is it on the coast?

Nope, the coast is to the west, while Linhaus is somewhat central. A nearer body of water would be the Serpentstream River to the east, which meanders down from the northeastern mountains, curves close(ish) to the capitol and Linhaus, then drains into Lake Hilva in the southeast (which is itself slightly closer to Linhaus than the coast is).

Quote:
Please let me know how much you want us to create.

You're welcome to name some NPCs or minor settlements/organizations as part of your backstory. :)

Are there any major antagonistic factions in Avonali that make extensive use of human foot soldiers?

After some more thought, this could be a given noble's/town's own militia, or a neighboring country's infantry, perhaps? Feel free to invent a noble or settlement if it helps.

This looks like a good opportunity to play the Gnome Warlock I made for a real life game, that I only got to play once. I'll get him up later today.

Liberty's Edge

As a fop, I picture my character as having attended a "school of swordplay", where he picked up his skills. A bored courtier who found something he was actually good at. Would such schools exists?

Certainly in the capitol, and possibly elsewhere as well.

Considering making a submission...how much homebrew would you allow for character building? I've got a concept in mind, but I'd have to mix and match class abilities (NOT multiclass) to pull it off properly. Of course, I'd let you review it and negotiate any changes you're interested in.

Are you sure multiclassing won't work? What's the concept?

OK Here's Jubal's character. Behind the spoiler, please find a posting sample.

Introduction:

Into the seediest bar in Linhaus, the Trough, entered a disappointed male water elf who looked a bit like a fish out of water in this country town. His leather breeches ended just below his knees, and his feet and new sandals were caked in dry brown mud. Dejection caused him to stoop from his full height of just under six feet. Over a dirty plain shirt and worn leather vest, he shouldered a longbow, a quiver of arrows, and a backpack probably filled with all of his earthly possessions. Strapped outside his haversack were a coil of hemp rope, a coil of silk rope, and a long, waxed leather overcoat. On a wide, leather weapons’ belt around his lean waist hung scabbards of two shortswords on each side, a dagger in the small of his back, a small coin pouch, and a tight ball of thin rope and small rocks. His hair was deep ocean blue; his skin was sky blue; while his eyes were limpid blue if you could see them. They were down cast and full of heartbreak.

It was early afternoon, so the Trough was empty except for the most ardent of drinkers and slackers. The elf stopped at the bar setting a coin on the counter and ordered, ”barkeep, ale. Keep refilling them until I pass out. Then, bring one more for when I wake up.” He took his first ale to the table in back where he could put his backpack in a corner and sat in a chair on top of it. The maneuver looked well-practiced. He stared at the full clay mug and wondered what went wrong.

He had been planning today for over a year. She said she loved him. She said that they would be together when he left the sea. But she lied. After finishing his ten years in the navy of the Hort of Orsal, he mustered out. He bought his first pair of sandals and walked overland to Linhaus. She was married. She had always been married to a venerable, workaholic merchant who never paid attention to her. But she had whispered in his ear over the years that she would leave him. Today, she stood there dumbstruck in her beautiful gown in her beautiful house and told him that they could never be together. What was he thinking? she actually asked him as he stood there at the end of a trail of mud on her expensive rug.

He snapped out of his thoughts and refocused on the top of his ale. He dove in. He tipped back the mug and drained it metaphorically into his heart via an unthirsty throat. ”Next.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I need to write his backstory from the short outline. I would like some bad guys to raid his childhood underwater home. Could be other water elves or Sahuagin. I would like some bad guys who threatened the shipping of Korkas for his Ranger Favored Enemies. Maybe Human and Orcs or Elves? His employer was a noble who owns a small fleet and specializes in shipping. Maybe the noble is The noble of the kingdom when it comes to the sea giving prestige to serve on his ships. We'll see.

BTW Do water elves get a swim speed?

cheers

I'm pretty sure multiclassing won't work - can't get abilities fast enough, and forced to get abilities that don't contribute to the concept. I haven't actually gone through and tried building her yet, though.

Concept: military-trained sniper and expert marksman who has some ability with invisibility, illusions, and light-based damage. (Rebuilding a character from a campaign that's ending due to the GM moving away - doesn't quite translate well to d20, but I really like the character.)

This sounds like either a straight-up Rogue (with the Arcane Trickster path) or a Bard (with probably, but not necessarily, the Valor college). The former gets you the "sniper" angle more strongly, but the latter gets you (I believe) the invisibility much sooner.

Is there a reason neither of those would work?

I'll take a closer look, but typically the standard classes have abilities that are useless to my concept, and frequently lack features that greatly complement the concept. Like the Ranger Hunter ability Volley - simulates rapid fire. But it's a level 9ish ability, which makes multiclassing to get it cot more than it should be worth. Meanwhile, Bardic Inspiration (for instance) is totally not something she'd be inclined to use, so I'd rather swap it for something else, even if it means not getting a class feature at a couple of levels. It's that sort of thing that I end up hybridizing to take care of.

Take a look at my Synna alias (posting from phone, so no direct link - sorry). It would be similar to that, but I'd swap out some more stuff for some limited spellcasting.

Taking that character and swapping out a few things for limited spellcasting is basically what the Arcane Trickster is. What would be the obstacle to going that route?

Scarab Sages

Ok, time to come to grips. My life is just not permitting this. Between all the games I GM and am involved in I just am not finding the time to give a homebrew the level of creativity and dedication it deserves.

Cheers to the eventual picks!

Sorry to hear it, but thanks for being realistic. Have fun with your other games!

Jiggy I'm still here.

I'm thinking of my character being from the largest city in the land (which is where we will be starting?) and growing up an orphan he was raised in a monastery. The monks there tried their best to teach poor Shikyomaru right from wrong, but he just didn't learn very well. What he did learn was how to use his fists and think on his feet.

This skillset, along with a natural ability to get into places unseen led him to a life of criminal pursuits. He was eventually cornered and caught and given a choice, help out or be thrown in jail to rot.

Actually, the starting town (Linhaus) is kind of medium-sized. The two largest cities are Korkas (on the coast) and Sempal (the capitol).

Sempal sounds likely....would there be a reason the powers that be would send Shikyo to Linhaus on some errand as a punishment for his crimes (I'm thinking he was a thief of some sort)

Ok, here is my alias for Varis Liadon (formerly Mulando). Just re-using an old profile (really wish you could delete those!)
Anyway, background has been added...will continue to add to profile as we go along. Was there anything else you need to count me as "complete"?

SCRANFORD: Check out the community add-on for Herolab 5e. It pretty much covers all the stuff Lonewolf could not add...it is on the forums in the 5e section.

Yeah. I've got that, but many of the the backgrounds only say "placeholder", and the spells and background doesn't show up in the BBC code output. Thanks though.

your right...my bad...yeah, I will be happy when Hasbro and Lone Wolf get a better agreement in place and ALL the info can be added....

I don't see your Background, or any of your class selections (like Fighting Style or your path/archetype), or your inventory (beyond weapons/armor).

Bumping. Fewer than half the people who expressed interest have submitted characters. :(

Is my very small and insignificant backstory good enough to get me started?

I don't need a terribly in-depth backstory. As long as you've got enough material to inform your (and to some degree, my) roleplaying, that's what counts. :)

Awesome, I prefer making stuff up as we go along.

Jiggy have you ever played Savage Worlds?

Hi Jiggy,

Jubal's water elf marine morphed into a wood elf ranger. He should be done and ready for review.

@Kuro — I've heard of it, but never looked at it or played it.

@Finlogan — Is it my imagination, or are you the first person to submit a character who can cast cure wounds? Yikes.

GM Jiggy wrote:

Didn't mean to. :D

I didn't really want to run a spell-caster. The ability just sort of came with the build.

cheers

Ok, everything should be there except background (Courtier...trying to find it so I can copy/paste) and equipment. Will get them up asap...

GM Jiggy wrote:

I'll have mine in tonight. :)

Still working on mine - I have the concept and a backstory framework, but I have to build it twice...as we agreed.

Sorry for the delay. Here is Teo's brief in character post and her interacting with the environment.

Spoiler:
Anykne on the outskirts of town could hear the tin sound of the ringing bell. The more simple villagers lit up with broad grins. The more savvy ones sneered as the petite halfling came into view. This was sure easier when I had my donkey and wagon, she thought, never breaking her broad grin.

"Teo's Tasty Tonics. Good for what ails you! Indigestion, curses, rheumatism, mummy rot, the tonic will cure them all. Just two small gold pieces and your day is made!" And mine!

She kept a watchful eye on all the faces, making sure she didn't run into any of those royals. They hadn't caught up to her yet. Hopefully she'd already slipped their mind. Not bloody lightly! Well, maybe I can make enough gold from these rubes to but my way out of trouble, if they do ever catch up to me.

Probably unnecessary but I'm just posting for fun:

Spoiler:

Gwenifer relaxes at the Trough, a seedy bar, in Linhaus. She wears an airy red dress and sits on a rickety wooden bar stool sipping a tankard of ale. The bar is full and she breathes in the smell of sweet and blood in the air. The scent is as intoxicating as any drink she might imbibe in.

Gwenifer sighs deeply. Are there no more challengers? This town has proven duller than I hoped. And I've hardly refilled my coffers. How's a girl supposed enjoy the finer things in life without coin in her purse?

Gwenifer downs her drink and turns to the bartender. "Hey! Has no one offers to buy me a drink tonight? A beautiful girl like myself should have men falling at her feet."

"Gwen, you are charming, but don't you remember, you've beat up all the men who've bought you drinks the past few nights. The men of Linhaus have learned better than to approach you by now." the bartender responds.

"Hey, I can't help it if the men of this town are weak. I deserve a real man. Besides, no one has complained about the entertainment."

"I might complain about a few broken tables."

"You don't become the owner of a tavern like this without expecting a few tables to be broken."

"True enough."

Suddenly, the door to the bar bursts open and a huge bearded man thunders in. He grits he teeth and thick veins pulse angrily on his bald head. "I'm looking for the one called Gwenifer! She injured two of my men and caused me to lose a day's labor! I'll teach her to mess with my workers!"

Gwenifer whoops and stands up. "Finally! For a second there, I thought I'd have to go to bed bored. You wait right there and I'll get ready."

The bartender whispers to her, "That's Esgraf, a merchant lord and former mercenary. He's not one you want to mess with."

Gwenifer winks back, "Then I'll make a nice profit when I wager on myself, won't I?"

While the two talk, Esgraf lumbers up to Gwenifer and grabs her shoulder. "I don't think so! You'll deal with me now!"

Before the blink of an eye, Gwenifer has the man in an arm lock forcing him to bend forward in pain. He screams out but is unable to escape the hold.

"I told you, I'll be right back. Now be a good boy and wait."

"I'd do as the lady says." interjects the barkeep.

Gwenifer releases Esgraf and grabs the backpack she had stashed under her stool. She shoves her empty mug into a serving wench's grip and tells her, "Pass this around. There should be good odds tonight." Gwenifer tosses a handful of coins into the mug. "On me."

She then retreats to the back room to change. Moments later, she reemerges in a white bodysuit and wrestler's mask. She leaps up onto a nearby table, ignoring the infuriated patrons whose meals she just trampled as she breaks out her ocarina to play her theme song.

"Good people of Linhaus! Are you ready?! I said are you ready?! In this corner stands Gwen the Widower, the current reigning champion. Her challenger, Esgraf the bald. Merchant. Mercenary. Definitely angry. Who shall win? Who shall lose?"

"Enough of this nonsense!" shouts Esgraf as he charges across the room towards her.

Before he can reach her, Gwenifer does a forward flip and lands on the man's shoulders. She claps him on the ears to disorient him then leans back until her hands touch the floor and twists and spins Esgraf to the ground. Esgraf grunts and begins to rise but Gwenifer rises quicker. She straddles his back and gets him into a choke hold.

"Is that all you got?" she asks, however Esgraf is unable to answer. "I guess so. Is no man a challenge for Gwen the Widower?" She tightens her grip until he passes out then stands up in triumph.

The rest of the bar's patrons shout a mixture of boos and cheers. "Thank you! Thank you!" Gwenifer bows. "I'll be here all week." Gwenifer snatches the now full mug of coins from the wench and smiles greedily. Not bad. I thought this place was drying up but I suppose I could stay a little longer.

Sorry to hear it. If you change your mind, remember that recruitment's open through Sunday.

OK, character is ready to post now. Apologies if the formatting isn't quite readable yet; it's past my bedtime and I'm really tired. All the information should be included, and I will make sure it's properly formatted when I create the alias (if I'm selected).

This submission is the by-the-book version; my (negotiable) preferred version is also ready if it's needed.

[Backstory]
Wraith had a normal childhood in a normal family from a normal neighborhood. Around the age of 30, she left home to travel the world for a while. She ended up in the military of a nearby nation, trained as a scout and, later, a sniper. During one particularly nasty skirmish, Wraith (still using her child name) was affected by several powerful spells which killed the rest of her unit. As a result of the unexpected interaction of these spells, she discovered she now had the ability to perform limited magical effects. She quickly learned to harness this magic to allow herself to disappear, often while distracting others with illusions. Nicknamed "Wraith" by her new unit, she continued to serve as a sniper even as she began studying every subject under the sun (and many from below the ground). She had never been a particularly good student, but she suddenly found herself able to understand complex topics with ease, and to remember details and facts she never would have thought herself capable of recalling. Eventually discharged from the military, she declared herself an adult and roamed the world, studying, practicing her magic, and taking whatever jobs and adventures came her way.

Role: sniper & illusionist
Appearance: small adult female with dark skin, black eyes, and silver hair
good taste in clothes, but nothing super fancy (my randomizer app describes it as "Tasteful: You like to look good but don't take it to an extreme.")
Personality: goal -
easy-going, mostly humorless ("You are serious almost all the time or don't participate in humor."), curious about everything
Birthplace or Home:
Past: event - traumatic event which triggered magical powers
education - average until after discovery of magical powers, then studied extensively everything she could
Religion: agnostic
widespread naturalistic ("Your religion puts emphasis on gods of nature and living in harmony with animals.")
Family: 1-2 siblings, overall average size, liberal ("Your family is open-minded, giving, and trusting."), unremarkable family of average reputation

Also, some folks still seem to have some unclaimed language slots; please make sure you make those selections.

Three days remain! If you want in, get a character submitted! :)

How many players are you looking to run the campaign with?

It looks like it is going to be a melee heavy party. As much as Gwenifer will be fun, I can totally whip up a cleric or something if need be.

My ideal is five. Though if the final tally was exactly six applicants, I might stretch it rather than picking out one person to cut. YOU ARE THE WEAKEST LINK GOODBYE

I don't mind running a party that's not of the traditional balance. You'll just all have to learn different habits of how to approach situations. :D
