GMPC for Kyrian

Cerin:
This creature is a minor demon called a quasit. Quasits are among the least of demonkind, and sometimes serve as familiars to evil spellcasters. Like all demons, quasits are immune to poison and electricity, and are resistant to damage, fire, cold, and acid. Cold iron weapons affect demons normally, as do weapons aligned with Good or Law. Quasits can use their bat-like wings to fly, and can turn themselves invisible at will.

Halvor charges into the room, sword drawn and shield raised, heading up the stairs to the pulpit on the north. Krissina follows Halvor, heading for the other stairs. While she runs, she casts a spell, causing her morningstar to glow as if lit with ghostly flames.

Kyrian steps into the room, drawing his longbow and nocking an arrow. Standing next to the larger pool, he releases and lets an arrow fly. However, the tiny demon darts out of the way of the arrow, which bounces harmlessly off the far wall.

Cerin also enters the room, eyeing the now-bubbling pool warily while calling the might of Gozreh to smite the little demon. A stormcloud materializes beside the creature, buffeting it with wind and rain.

Lynnda also runs into the room, sizing up the situation. She casts a spell and a ray of blue-white energy shoots from her hand toward the demon. Alas, the creature evades.

Round 2

The demon shouts, "Taste the wrath of the Mother!" It then seems to vanish into thin air. At the same time, from the violently bubbling larger pool rises another of the weird creatures with doglike legs and the split jaws with vestigial hands on its chin. Unlike the others you've encountered so far, this one is naked (and obviously male). As the bubbles of the pool subside, the creature's red eyes fix on Cerin. It wades over and attacks with tooth and claw. Cerin evades the creature's claws, but it manages to sink its fangs into the druid's arm. Almost instantly, Cerin's mind fills with images of Aldern Foxglove butchering the horses back in Tickwood, and Cerin feels the rage at that act bubble up within him...

Halvor turns towards the new threat just in time to see Krissina wallop it across the face with her Morningstar. Figuring his companions have that challenge under hand, the fighter creeps closer to the strange pool above.

Can't move myself on the map ATM. Please advance me 20 ft. closer to the glowing pool. Readied action to swing if something (bad) comes in melee...swinging with PA.

Your humble narrator

@Krissina: Whoah! Max damage on a crit! Awesome!

Seeing the little demon disappear and hearing something attack Cerin behind her, Krissina turns and charges the monster rising out of the larger pool. The creature's attention is apparently fully focused on Cerin, when it turns toward Krissina with a blank look on its hideous face. It hisses menacingly as Krissina swings her morningstar, connecting squarely against the side of its head. One of the spikes in her weapon crushes its temple, and the the thing gurgles as violet blood pours out of its ear, nose, and mouth. It reels sideways and falls into the water with a sickening splash, its face below the surface. Its blood begins to stain the water.

With no apparent targets, everyone mostly stays put, scanning for any signs of motion.

Cerin: I still need that Will save.

Round 3

From above your heads, you hear a disembodied, croaking voice chant in an unknown language.

Cerin, Krissina, and Lynnda:
It sounds rather like it's trying to cast a spell...

Everyone can attempt a Perception check to determine which square the voice is coming from.

Cerin exclaims "Excellent hit!" to Krissina with a nod of thanks. Holding his injured arm, he listens to the chanting and calls out "Quasits are weak, cowardly creatures, relying on their ability to turn invisible to protect them. They are somewhat resistant to most energies and weapons, we need cold iron, Lawful or Good aligned weapons to really hurt them, unless someone has a spell that uses sound to harm. Cerin's feelings of rage subside as realizes that they were caused by the now-dead creature's bite.

Halvor follows the sound of the chanting and looks toward the ceiling. He spies what he thinks is a shimmering in the air, raises his crossbow, and lets fly a quarrel. Following Halvor's gaze, Kyrian likewise sends an arrow flying in the same direction. Alas, both arrows hit the ceiling, bounce off, and fall to the floor.

Krissina casts a spell and touches Halvor on the shoulder. The warrior feels bolstered with a fire in his belly.

Round 4

The chanting overhead stops. There is a puff of smoke that smells of brimstone and a WOOSH next to Lynnda. An unnatural-looking six-foot-long red-and-black centipede as thick as a man's arm is suddenly in the room with you. It attacks Lynnda with vicious-looking mandibles, biting her hard in the lower leg. Takes 4 hp damage

At the same time, you hear a few more magical words spoken overhead. The tiny demon suddenly re-appears, flitting about near the ceiling, about 25 feet above your heads. When she reappears, she is pointing her clawed hand at Halvor. The warrior feels a strange lethargy course through him. Halvor, please make a DC 14 Will save or be paralyzed.

Your humble narrator

Forgot to spell this out: The monsters go first, then the actions of the party happen in the following order: Halvor, Krissina, Kyrian, Cerin, Lynnda. I'll continue to GMPC Kyrian until he can re-join the game.

GM Only:
Reflex save (quasit) (DC 15): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 ...fails
Arrow shot (Kyrian): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24 ...hit

As Halvor cocks his crossbow for another shot, the tiny demon materializes out of thin air and points its clawed finger at the warrior. Halvor suddenly freezes in place. At the same time, a fiendish giant centipede materializes next to Lynnda, biting her before she can react.

With the little demon popping back into existence, Krissina sees her chance. She rushes across the pulpit, which rises ten feet off the floor, and perches on the ledge as she casts a spell. A cone of flame jets from her outstretched fingertips, reaching just far enough to engulf the monster in flames.

fire damage: 2d4 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5

However, after the flames subside, the creatures does not seem scorched in the slightest. She sneers at Krissina, and taunts, "Mmmm. That felt nice. Do it again?"

Cerin calls forth the power of Gozreh again, and the tiny stormcloud re-materializes, basting the demon with wind and rain. Alas, the creature anticipates the direction of the blast, and ducks below it.

Kyrian releases another arrow at the demon, and this time his aim is true. The arrow hits her in the shoulder. "একটি! যে ব্যাথা!"

Abyssal:
"Ow! That hurt!"

Her attention on the summoned fiendish centipede, Lynnda zaps it with her newly-acquired shock-wand. Electricity arcs through the beast, but it keeps attacking.

The quasit cackles. "Ha! I am beloved by the Demon Queen! Your feeble attacks are useless against me!" She flies back over the triangular pool, hovering just below the ceiling that's 15 feet above the floor of the pulpit. She pulls out Kyrian's arrow, and red-black ichor drips into the triangular pool, causing it and the larger pool to bubble violently again. However, you all see that the bubbling of the triangular pool very quickly ebbs and its golden glow noticeably diminishes, while the larger pool bubbles as before.

Sense Motive (DC 20):
You notice a look of worry cross the quasit's face at the behavior of the triangular pool.

Perception (DC 20):

Meanwhile, the centipede lashes forward and snaps at Lynnda, but she manages to evade its bite.

Halvor: On your action, you may make a DC 14 Will save as a full-round action to break the hold person effect.

Kyrian steps back and fires at the creature attacking Krissina. The arrow grazes its shoulder, but doesn't seem to penetrate its thick hide.

Cerin finishes casting his spell. A cloud of mist appears above him, and with a flash of lightning and a crack of thunder, a beautiful golden eagle appears in the room. It scans the room for enemies, and flies at something that apparently only it can see. It collides with something invisible in the air, raking it with its talons.

Krissina's face twists into a mask of anger, and she swings her morningstar furiously. But in her fury, the swing is wild and completely misses.

The bipedal abomination continues its attack on Krissina. It rakes its claws across her face, then bites her weapon arm. Take 7 hp damage from the two hits.

The quasit appears to be stunned by Lynnda's spell, and it takes no action other than to hover in place for a moment. It drifts downward, such that it's currently only about seven feet above the floor.

The quasit is currently denied its Dex modifier, and also has a -2 penalty on its AC and CMD.

Not being able to get to the quasit in time to be of much use in the current state of affairs, Halvor instead focuses on dispatching the remaining, dangerous abomination that is harrying poor Krissina. If he manages to hit and drop the thing, he moves as close as he can to the little flying demon. Please move me, if you don't mind.

With a silent plea to his god to guide his aim, Cerin calls upon the storm to batter the temporarily stunned demon into unconsciousness as he watches Halvor smash the summoned monstrosity. If the foe is felled, he looks for a path to reach the quasit before it recovers it's senses.

In her fury at the creature, Krissina calls to the spirits of fire, and jets of flame engulf the creature. While scorched, it continues to menace her, and takes a half-step toward her as Halvor jabs his mithril ranseur through the thing's back, twisting it as he pulls it out. Violet blood pours out of the wound, and the creature collapses to the floor.

Cerin calls forth the power of Gozreh, and a tiny stormcloud appears above the quasit, blasting it with wind and rain. However, the cloud appears smaller and weaker than normal, and the demon appears unaffected.

Kyrian lowers his bow and draws his shortsword with his right hand, stepping closer to the hovering demon, and then stabs her squarely in the chest. But for some reason, the blow fails to penetrate the thing's hide and bounces off.

In an effort to keep the thing magically disabled, Lynnda casts another spell. Tiny motes of multicolored lights appear around the demon's head. However, the demon appears to ignore the effects of spell as it regains its senses from her earlier spell.

Cerin's summoned eagle shrieks loudly as a cloud of mist surrounds it. With a flash of lightning and crack of thunder, it disappears as the magical summons ends.

The tiny demon shakes her head, becoming aware of her surroundings again. She makes an arcane gesture and utters an unspeakably guttural phrase in an unknown language. Her words seem to shake reality, grating at your perceptions and echo through your very souls.

Lynnda and Kyrian attempt to strike her mid-casting, but she evades their strikes.

Casts cause fear, 30-foot radius. Everyone in the room please make a DC 12 Will save or become frightened for 1d4 rounds. Success indicates that you are shaken for 1 round. This is a mind-affecting fear effect.

The quasit then flies over the larger pool, hovering about 12 feet above the floor. She cackles, "Ha! Ha! Ha! You thought you had me, didn't you? I am the Mother's beloved, and you shall fall before her might!"

Halvor drops all thoughts of attacking the demon as he feels a momentary panic. He grips his ranseur and heads for the double doors leading in, keeping an eye out for the thing to make sure it doesn't swoop down and get him. It's that scary.

Man, will saves are not your friend! Per a suggestion from James Jacobs, I'm going to run that PCs that are affected by an ongoing effect that takes them out of the action, they can make a saving throw each round to break the effect. Monsters will be affected as per the regular rules. PCs are just awesome that way.

Will: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21 -2 if still sickened, though apparently doesn't matter. Also Halvor, Resistance applies to all your saves for it's 1-minute duration, that it would matter much with your rolling this combat

Cerin sighs as he sees Halvor run from the room. Poor guy! It's not his fault that magic is his Achilles Heel, but I know he is going to beat himself up about it. Resolving to have a talk with his friend later, he steps over to Krissina, draws the wand and concentrates on channeling the healing power from it into her.

The quasit vocalizes an unspeakably terrifying utterance. In reaction, Halvor and Lynnda flee in terror, running out of the room. Krissina stands her ground, but between the fear and the wrathful thoughts, she puts her hands on the sides of her head and doubles over for a moment.

Cerin uses his wand of cure light wounds to heal some of the damage the abomination had inflicted upon Krissina.

Kyrian continues fighting, letting fly another arrow. Again, this shot should have been a square hit into the demon's chest, but it simply bounces off, as if the thing was made of stone.

The creature continues to hover over the larger pool. She casts a spell, and a ray of black energy shoots at Kyrian. Kyrian staggers a moment, as he feels his strength ebb away.

Kyrian takes a -5 penalty to his Strength for 3 rounds.

Your turn. Lynnda and Halvor can make Will saves to reduce their Frightened condition to Shaken. Everyone else: your Shaken condition ends at the start of your turn.

Lynnda's fear subsides somewhat, and she steels herself to return to face the demon. Turning on her heels, she attempts to grab Halvor as she runs past her, but he pushes her aside. Shrugging her shoulders, she re-enters the weird cathedral, fixing the demon with a hateful glare. She raises her right hand, as if about to start casting a spell.

Your humble narrator

@Krissina:Let's say that to get to the demon, you'll need to succeed a DC 25 Acrobatics (jump) check. You would then need to succeed on a Combat Maneuver (grapple). Regardless of success, you will end up in the larger pool.

Cerin follows Krissina up the stairs and uses the wand on her again. "I was pondering the idea of having Halvor throw me up so I could grab her, but her spell has put that on hold. Do you have many spells left?" he whispers to her.

Krissina stands on the pulpit, contemplating whether or not to try to grab the quasit out of the air. While she ponders, Cerin uses his wand to magically heal some of her wounds.

After running out of the room, Lynnda just as suddenly returns. "Hey! Ugly! Over here!" The quasit cocks her head at the sorceress with a bemused expression.

Using the quasit's distraction as an advantage, Kyrian fires another arrow at her. This one hits her in the abdomen, and this time it doesn't just bounce off. Red-black ichor drips from the wound into the pool below.

Your turn!

@Krissina: With the quasit's descent, the DC of the Acrobatics check needed to reach her drops to 15. You would then need to make a Combat Maneuver to grab her. The demon is dazed, and will not take its AOO. Also of note: a quasit is size Tiny. Regardless of success, you would fall 10 feet and land in the larger pool.
