Aryxis shakes his head at Bala "The natural world is not my forte. My interests lie in the inorganic, historic, estoric or perhaps some combination of them"
With one of the creeping vines down, Aryxis waits for the other to approach with his greatsword ready.

It looks like we haven't gotten a Knowledge roll against these guys yet.
Barbo stares hard at the enemy, fighting back tears. C'mon...c'mon... I read about sentient vines in a book somewhere... why else did I spend SO MUCH FREAKING TIME in the library during college?

Einn tries to weaken the other vine, but this time her ray shoots straigth through an open spot in the mass of vines. Aryxis stands ready with his sword, luring the vines in. When it tries to squeeze through the narrow opening he is ready and steps up. One fell slash later and all that is left is a bunch of firewood!
Now that it is done Barbo starts a lecture about these assassin vines...
I assumed Aryxis readied for when he could reach it, incl the 5ft step given that you saw it's reach earlier
You check on Seltyiel and see that he is beyond healing. After you take some time to mourn you check the room. Soft glowing light comes from a katana that is secured on the wall by pitons above a carefully constructed cairn.

Similarly, Lastwall’s tradition is to cremate the entire body save the skull, which is etched with the name and dates of birth and death then placed in The Ossuaries of the Fallen in Vigil.

Barbo takes some time with Seltiel, lost in grief. I knew him more than so many Pathfinders. He kept me safe when others could not. His blades and wit I will always remember. He deserved more. He deserves more. After a while, he stands up on creaking knees. "We must take his body back. His family will need to grieve. And the society needs to honor his sacrifice. " To think, I almost opened that door... Barbo shudders.
When they investigate the room, Barbo is far less interested in the Katana than in the grave. "This must be our brave samurai. I do not think we should take her weapon until we cremate her first. It is Shizuran tradition is to cremate the body on a pyre under the midday sun, then distribute the ashes to the deceased’s descendants.

Einn spends several minutes crying over the body of Seltyiel. It's so sad when good Pathfinders are cut down."
"I agree with Barbo. Let's cremate the body before we take the kantana."
Aryxis |
Aryxis takes a bit more time to cut up the killer vines some more. Perhaps venting some grief of his own.
"Yes cremation seems like a good option"
Bala Seafar |
Bala contemplates the death of Seltyiel in his own quiet way, standing by the body of his ally, meditating on the violent nature of the business they are in.
When the team then moves into the room, he asks Einn, "My friend, can you tell what is making it glow like that?"
Though it matters little. Although I am proficient in the use of such a weapon, it is not something I would normally choose to use.
He listens intently to Barbo's discussion on cremations, before offering his input. "I think the Shizuran ceremony would be best. I can take the ashes back to Jinin. It is past time I returned to Tien anyway."

Could we not cremate the body save the head under the midday sun and then deal with the skull separately? In effect, we can observe both traditions to a degree.

Xiao: that would be observing the Lastwall tradition, not the Shizuran. Time spend: 60 minutes
Xiǎo Qīngwā |
What I'm saying is, follow the Lastwall tradition of cremating the body except for the skull, but do it under the midday sun and give the ashes to the descendants as per the Shizuran tradition. In effect, melding both traditions into something new.
Xiao attempts to renew his longstrider.

Oh, I was thinking along the lines of Xiao. If we have to choose one, I vote Shizuran.
Barbo nods in agreement with Bala. "That was her tradition. We should honor that. Let us wait until mid day, then bring her outside for the ceremony. "
He looks around nervously. "Maybe we should clear the rest of the dungeon first? I would hate for something nasty to sneak up on us while we are honoring this warrior. " He looks down at Seltiel sadly. Or while we carry our friend home..
GMG |
You can do perform whatever ritual you want, what I should have said is that Xiao's suggestion is more in line with the Lastwall tradition than the Shizuran, although it is a nice mix of both
Following Barbo's suggestion you move through the dungeon, always keeping to your left. Further down the corridor you go down a small flight of stairs. Imagery of skulls, dwarves in burial shrouds, and young dwarves praying adorn this long hall. Heraldic charts from several dwarven
clans cover the southern wall. The skeleton of a large, serpentine creature is coiled on a stone pedestal in the southern alcove. The air smells really bad in this hallway.
You quickly move on and find a stash of alchemical and magical items in the next room which Aryxis and Barbo identify

Targeting the swarm in such a way so as not to take splash damage himself.
Not sure exactly where the amoebas are - map isn't updated. (Or I'm having tech issues.) So I presume he had to take a 5' step away to make a ranged touch attack into the swarm. If only a 5' step is enough to get him clear, then he will draw his other alkali flask as his move action. If the swarm kept moving after engulfing him, and filled into the hallway behind him, then he moved enough to get clear but couldn't also draw the other flask.
GMG |
I think you have tech issues, moved you (5ft step). However cold damage is not x2, only the alkali damage, but with the x1.5 against swarms it is enough. You may change your move action if you want.
Bala steps away and flings a very cold alkali flask at the amoebas. Thousands of the tiny cubes are dissolved by the flask, and the few remaining are not a threat anymore/

I'll retain the aforementioned drawing of the second alkali flask as the move action from the previous round. Thanks, though.
Bala trots into the room, and sets himself up to attack the animate puddle. He takes a split second to imbue his last alkali flask with the cold of the sea. Switching to Tien, in case the ... thing ... understands Common, he says, "Xiao, I'll wait for you to step away from it, unless you're willing to be splashed by a little bit of acid."

In a combined effort the pathfinders bring the slithering tracker down! First Xiao stabs at it, after which Bala throws his alkali flask. That burns away most of the creature and Einn's fiery blast does the rest.
A little less than an hour later the pathfinders have explored the remainder of the complex. You have found more signs of the ancient dwarven temple and also evidence of more recent orc occupation.
At midday you gather outside and burn the elven body, without the skull. You have moved Seltyiel's corpse also outside, covered with a winterblanket one of you brought. The ancient katana is in your packs when you prepare for the journey back to Lastwall.
Once you return to Uscalin Lodge, your first mission is to go to a temple to purchase a raise dead spell for Seltyiel. After that you report to Venture-Captain Shevar Besnik. After you have recounted the events, he remarks what a wonderful chronicle this will make once he’s heard back from his other teams, who are also investigating passages from the tome.
“I knew you would triumph! Just goes to show I picked the right Pathfinders to seek out adventure while unknown dangers lurked. There could have been almost anything there! Surely, this addition to the Chronicles will put Uscalin Lodge on the map. Not only did you find the elven samurai, you recovered her weapon and paid her her final respect in a wonderful mixture of Shizuran tradition and those of the Knights of Ozem.
He points to two lacquered wooden boxes. In one of them he placed the ashes of the fallen samurai and in the other her skull. "I will personally make sure her skull is placed in the Ossuaries of the Fallen in Vigil, and I thank you Bala for taking it on yourself to seek out her family in Minkai. That will be a long journey that might lead to further adventures. I don't think I need to remind you to report them."
Finally he turns to all the pathfinders [b]"Thank you for showing cooperation when Seltyiel was lost to you. You persevered and showed great team spirit when you decided to pay for his resurrection from your own pocket. For me that is the difference between a pathfinder and a great pathfinder. Now go and get some rest before you move on to your next assignment!"
