Has it been long enough to get the +2 concentration from doing Jask's thing? And should I be able to move my token on roll20? I tried dragging it but it wouldn't work for me. Just wanted to five foot step to the right so nothing hits me. And I also couldn't help but notice that Hakeem's token had a skull over it. I'm sure that was an accident.
The +2 to concentration checks provided by Jask need some hours of practice to be gained, so currently Jesari has not earned it yet.
---
Yes, you should be able to move your token. I messed with the permissions, but now you should be able to move Jesari as normal.
---
Hakeem's token has a skull over it because he's dead or dying. You cannot know which of the two without getting closer to his body and attempt a Heal check, something I suppose you'll be doing when combat will be over.
GM Giuseppe |
Is Hakeem's player no longer with us or was he just 'taking a break'?
We PMed each other last week. He should had been doing some posts while staying at the main camp, but he didn't. I PMed him again yesterday, informing him I decided to exclude him due to his prolonged absence from the game. He has not answered me yet. Fortunately, I've recruited a party of 5 so you can easily continue without opening another recruitment to fill the missing party member.
GM Giuseppe |
Alexite, actually you cannot take that 5 ft. step because you would be passing through an enemy's square. I would ask you to move your character otherwise, or allow me to roll an Acrobatics check for you in my post to determine if Alexite is able to perform that movement and avoid resulting AoO.

Hey, I don't want to make a big deal out of this because you're the GM but are you sure?
I know you can't step diagonally past a 'hard corner' but I think you can step past an opponent.
I even read a thread.
Like I said, it's your game so do what you think is right but I also want to know where you are getting your rule so I can apply it to my games.

Hey, I know we don't know each other in real life so you may think I don't like when someone contests my ruling, but...Well, I love to learn. Indeed, I've always applied this rule in my home games, and before getting to play online, no one ever told me how to handle this. We as a RL group never discussed the matter because we've always been taking for granted that one couldn't not move through an enemy square no matter what without having to attempt an Acrobatics check. But we were wrong. Thank you for bringing up the point, I will inform my RL players too of how this works.
GM Giuseppe |
I think we got the rule from the Acrobatics skill description, where it's said that a character cannot move through an occupied space without having to attempt an Acrobatics check. We entirely forgot to check out that part of Chapter 8, so I think this was the cause of our mistake.
Alexite K. |
Yeah, I learn new things all the time and since we're all here to have fun, it's all good.
I think the misconception in this particular case stems in that you are right and moving past an enemy does provoke an AoO, but the 5' step is a special type of movement and that doesn't apply.
And I'm glad you saw that it wasn't my intent to 'make it big deal out of it'.
Thanks.
Game on!

So originally my phone had unlimited data as long as my mom kept her phone (it involved some sort of contract or something that I can't remember but that's beside the point).
Well that was several years ago. Fast forward to now and well my mom's phone is starting to crack and it's acting up and dropping calls and it's just old.
My phone is too (can't update it without the update screwing up my phone).
So tomorrow we are getting new phones. However I'll no longer have unlimited data meaning I can't post as often as I can unless I'm using hotspot wifi (like at a library or the cafe at the bookstore I work at) since we have extremely limited data (2 GB for each person).
So this is going to take some getting used too but I'll try post as much as I'm able to. There might be days I can't post but those days would mostly be on Sundays if I'm not working or if I'm out of town (that'll be on Thanksgiving coming up soon).
Sorry about this y'all. But while this will take some getting used to (not only me but also my mom and sister [she's getting a new phone as well]) I don't think it's fair that my mom has to use a phone on it's last legs simply so I can have unlimited data.
I just wanted to let all of you know about this.
I hope you can understand and forgive me for any delays that may come up due to this. But I assure you I'll do what I can and post whenever I can. Thank all of you for understanding.
GM Giuseppe |
I'm sorry for that Sizara. Thank you for letting us know.
I hope, however, that this doesn't prevent you from posting 1/day. When you know you won't be able to post, please PM me so I can bot Sizara accordingly. For now, let's see how often you're actually able to post before taking any decisions. If this problem would prevent you from posting at least 1/day though, I must confess you that I do not want this game to be slowed down further, so I would probably consider the idea of turning to a more consistent poster. I hope this doesn't happen, so let's wait before taking decisions, but as I wrote in the recruitment thread, a minimum of 1 post per day is required to be part of this campaign. Sometimes real life gets in the way, and it can happen to anyone, but as a GM I have the responsibility to ensure that the other players get what they were promised: a game flowing at a constant rate of 1 post/day. But I'm sure you'll find a way to post each day; if you won't don't worry, we all have a real life and won't blame you for this :)

Woo, the DM finally failed a will save. Now I have definitive proof that I'm actually a sorcerer casting spells and that it all isn't some elaborate delusion in my character's head. And apparently a spear does a d8 and I've been rolling a d6 this whole time. Derp.

Alright folks, I have some news.
From now on Sizara won't be playing with us anymore. I've PMed her with the reason for my choice.
This leaves us with 3 active players. I think that we could even try to continue this way, without recruiting anyone else. Of course, I'd allow you to take a GMNPC with you to help balance the party. What you think about it? The pros for a party of 3 would be the increased speed of the game and the chance for me to focus more on your PCs. What you think about it? Would you prefer a fourth member or would you like to try a party of three?
While I'm here, I would also like you opinion about slightly increasing our posting rate for this campaign: I'm not going to ask you to post 5 times per day. I would be content with 2, especially when we are in combat and the posts tend to be not so descriptive after all. I think that increasing our posting rate would allow us to reach the adventure's climax sooner. What you think about it? Would you be able to do that? Maybe resetting to 1 post/day during weekends?
I'll be waiting for your suggestions.

I think playing a game with three players will be tough but not impossible. I think the best number is five players because it allows for more player interaction and the game can go on if one player is absent (vacation, whatever). Only three players will also put a heavier burden on the DM since you would have to 'play' the NPCs more often.
That being said, we would have to get creative to bring in another player or two, but I'm sure we could think of something (other castaways from the Jenivere?).
If we are going to recruit, it may be best if we ask people that we know are good players first to see if they want to join us.

I can certainly do small posts two (or more) times a day without problems on 'most days'. I just don't want everyone's post to be super brief like "I hit with my sword" and show the dice roller.
BTW, I usually have more time on weekends to post (wife and kids sleep in late).
Just some thoughts to ponder...
Jesari Sevandir |
I can go either way. It feels like kind of a waste to have an open spot and not offer it to someone but it might also feel kind of forced to introduce someone new. Alexite's idea might be the best solution if we handle it right though.
I think the only thing really stopping me from posting more is my awkward schedule. I work nights and weekends so I miss out on the busy hours when most other American posters are around. The GM seems to be around and active when I get off in the morning though so I can at least respond promptly to those posts with the occasional afternoon post before I leave.
GM Giuseppe |
I'm not opposed to the idea of recruiting another player at all. Maybe Fabian's suggestion is the best way to go for me too.
Kali'da Wedo |
I can probably do two posts a day so long as no one minds one of them being fairly low on length (and probably quality) as it'd probably have to be from my phone. I usually sit down and do all my campaign posts in one big lump before bed, but I can definitely say I'll try to do my best, especially in combat.
I'd not mind picking up another player. I personally think four is the sweet spot for speed and player interactions.
GM Giuseppe |
As you can see, I've posted two days of travel. I will post the last day of travel tomorrow morning (your night), so if you could post at least once before that you can have the chance to roleplay during the travel.
GM Giuseppe |
Alex refereed me to your game to possibly fill a spot. Not sure what you need exactly, though it looks like a martial character primarily. Figured I'd see if you have very many interested parties in joining before making a decision as I've got a fair few games already.
Hey Drogeney, it's a pleasure to see you (we play together in Eschie's Second Darkness already).
As far as party roles are concerned, in my opinion the party would need a frontliner or a skill monkey of some sort: Alexite has acted as a sort of frontliner until now, and he's doing a good job. As a consequence, we might need another melee character or someone who's able to perform a lot of different tasks, such as disabling traps, moving silently and so on. So either a martial class or a roguish class.
Drogeney |
Lol, didn't realize that was you Uncle Izy!
I'll look at building something though if you're looking at a steady 2 posts per day that might be a bit much for me outside of combat due to my existing load and work schedule.
Might look at an unchained summoner, I've seen some builds where you can do all of that to one degree or another. Not entirely sure how quickly I can have one ready as the middle of the week is always rough for me time wise. I'll see what I can whip up today before work.
*Edit: Just saw the source limitations. That changes things a bit.

I was going to tell you about those limitations in this post. By the way, don't feel compelled to accept: we're looking for a player who can easily commit to at least 1 post a day, maybe a second if he/she can. But if you have a lot of campaigns already and you know it'll be hard for you to follow, don't feel forced to submit a character :)
GM Giuseppe |
Some quick notes concerning your last posts:
- Alexite: In order to teach Tito another command, you need to spend other 7 rest actions in its company. For the current day I've assumed you would join the hunters, but from the next day I'll suppose you stay at the shelter and train Tito.
- Jesari: It's okay if you dont RP your attempt to befriend Sasha, don't worry.
Drogeney |
Like I said, I can do 1 a day with fairly solid certainty, especially now that I have a tablet I can take to work, much easier than a phone. That being said, I'd keep looking for someone, I might still build something just cause I enjoy doing so sometimes for the challenge of it since I have a game or two that seems to be dying off currently. The type of character you need is not the kind I generally play though so I'm not as enthused about it as I would otherwise be.

Well, let's have Alexite go hunting until we can get our rations count up to at least a day for everyone (i.e., we all still have something to eat if hunting is unsuccessful for a day).
I know Alexite is not the most diplomatic of the bunch, but he will continue to reach out to the NPCs to get them at least 'helpful' so he will probably try his 'charm' on Aerys next.

Alright, we'll be waiting for some time to see what happens then. If Drogeney won't be able to help us, I will open a recruitment thread to fill the missing spot.

It's supposed to be that way. The low Diplomacy modifier just means that Alexite needs more time to breach into others. Since failure do not imply a worsening of the existing relationship, it's always worth a try. I'll roll your Diplomacy check with Aerys in my next post ;)

Folks, how do you feel about saving the exceeding food from a day of hunt in the form of rations? Rations usually last that longer because they're made of food easily preserved. I don't know if meat/vegetables are so easy to preserve to become rations. What do you think about it? Do you have any idea on how to get additional rations?

OK, some metagming but maybe not much because Alexite probably knows more than Fabian about this subject.
Meat can be smoked, dried, and/or salted to last longer.
The waves in the seashore make a pretty decent cooler if you fashion a net (so fish won't eat it) and put stuff inside. Similarly, any fish caught could be kept alive in some form of net.
Any veggies found could be buried. Fruit... fruit is stuff to preserve unless you go canning so let's forget fruit.
Just some thoughts...
GM Giuseppe |
Good. I think that would need a DC 10 Survival check to be done, do you agree? I also think that NPCs could easily "produce" some rations while you're away from the base camp using Hakeem's fish nets and burying some veggies.
Jesari Sevandir |
Jesari isn't much of a plunderer but I have a feeling I'm going to get out-voted on this one since we don't have to swim and we have Ishirou around. Down with whatever you guys want to do.
GM Giuseppe |
I might know someone who would be willing to step into the mix and pick up a missing role. He's just re-looking at character creation to see if there's something he could get behind!
Thank you Kali'da!
As a side note, I've noticed you have not added the +2 bonus provided by the training Jask on your concentration modifier. Can you please add it to your character's sheet, perhaps with a note explaining how you have gained that bonus?
GM Giuseppe |
Sure thing. I keep a sheet on another site, too, and sometimes forget to update my one here x.x Adding it now.
It's added onto the Concentration on my sheet, and the source is listed under the "Notes" spoiler.
Well done Kali'da, thank you.
GM Giuseppe |
Just taking a moment while I'm lucid to say I am exceptionally ill today and probably unable to sit down and actually write a coherent post. Sorry.
Thank you for letting us know Kali'da. Get well soon :) In the meantime I'll bot Kali'da to keep things moving.
GM Giuseppe |
Is Gelik unfriendly towards Alexite? How are we handling loot distribution? Should we write the stuff we found so far in our sheets?
Yes, Gelik started with an unfriendly attitude towards all of you.
I think you should handle the loot distribution thing as you prefer.
Yes, you should write everything you find and your character claims for himself in his sheet.

GM Giuseppe |
Oh, there's a news folks: the new party member will join you as soon as you manage to overcome this encounter!
GM Giuseppe |
Hey everyone, I'm here to share my thoughts about this campaign with you. I've already talked about this with Fabian in private. My point is the following: we are going too slow for my tastes. I'm progressively growing bored of the slow-pacing of this game, and I'm seriously considering the idea to quit it. Why? Because a single combat can last for weeks, progresses are very slow and we don't have any chance to close this AP in any case, if we keep a posting rate so slow. I've recently found out that I enjoy fast-paced games more, games in which a combat is quickly solved in a matter of hours or in a single day rather than in multiple days or even weeks. Only these kinds of games have a chance to reach their natural conclusion, from what I've seen so far.
In my first recruitment post I wrote that at least one post/day was required to join the campaign; I meant that 1 post/day was the minimum amount of posts you should make, not the optimal number of post for this game. I've been hoping every day that you would start posting more frequently sooner or later, but for some reason this never happened. I know and perfectly understand that Mimesyne is taking part in a lot of games, and thus she's not able to post much more than once/day; I had hoped that Calmlight could increase her/his posting rate since the last time we talked in private, when she let me know that she could manage to post more, especially considering her current schedule. I know that this kind of things involve real life, and that probably if you aren't posting more than once/day that is not because you are not willing to, but simply because you cannot. But on the other hand, I must also consider my own preferences, and although I tried very hard to enjoy the game regardless of its pace, well, I've found it to be very difficult: as I've already said, I love fast-paced games. Luckily, I'm able to post much more than once/day, and I expect that my players can or are willing to do the same. It's frustrating to see a game progress so slowly and know that you could have posted a lot more that day, pushing the story forward.
So I'm here in order to ask you once again: would you be able to post at least 2-3 times/day? I already know the answer, because I've asked this question two times already, but I need to know again that you cannot commit to such a pace before ending the game. If you could, I would be very happy to continue. Otherwise, maybe it's better for us to stop the game and for me to start something new with people who can manage my expectations. It's always sad to have to say something like this, and I perfectly understand that you would have been posting much more if you could. But it's time to face the truth: if we continue this way, I'll gradually lose interest in the game myself, and end up closing the game in any case. As a GM, I invest a great part of my time to run the game, and at least I want to enjoy the game myself, otherwise I would end up making bad posts and feeling the campaign as a "weight".
I'll wait for your answers, even though I fear I know how you'll answer. Nonetheless, I think that it's worth trying to get you to post more before making any decision about this game.
Kali'da Wedo |
Well first off, thank you for taking the time to lay out your concerns and bring this up, rather than just leaving and never returning (which seems to be a popular thing to do here in PBP).
Part of the reason I can't really post more than once a day is because of how much each post seems to require. Your posts often cover a full day (some times more) worth of things to respond to all at once, meaning that making a short post from my phone isn't going to cut it. It'd be basically pointless and not actually help move the story in the least. I just can't commit to making these lengthy posts that are required to properly respond to the situation throughout the day. It's just not practical when I have things I need to be doing during the day!
So no, sadly, with how much each posts requires to respond and react to the story, there's no way I can manage more than one a day.
GM Giuseppe |
I understand your point Kali'da, although I have to say that even when we are in combat (as now, for example) you do not post more than once anyway, even if combat post are much less descriptive and requiring on your part.
GM Giuseppe |
Jesari, what do you say? I know for sure that Fabian can handle 2-3 posts/day, and I hope that also the new player would be able to keep that pace. Would you be able to keep that pace too, if I lower the single posts' requirements in terms of time spent to write them, making them less complex?
Jesari Sevandir |
Well, to be fair, it is the holiday season. I would kind of expect a drop in posting. The complexity of the posts isn't a problem for me, it's more of a timing thing really. I've only got about a 3-4 hour window to post on most days so I can only really reply multiple times to things that happen in those hours.
