ROUND 2
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔

Both Roksana and her steed hit the owlbear. Jacobus isn’t as lucky: his mace swing misses as well. And since, apparently, when it rains, it pours, Serolt misses the beast with his arrow too.

The owlbear, distracted by your opposition, drops Regin on the ground and steps over it in order to protect its prey as it fights against you. Roaring furiously, the owlbear attacks Jacobus with a deadly combination of claws and bite, but the Abadaran inquisitor is able to dodge all of the creature’s attacks!

Kryolani's flames invest the owlbear, and the creatures roars savagely in response, turning its attentions to the noble man.

EDIT: I accidentally mixed up Roksana's and Kasper's attack rolls with their damage rolls!

ROUND 3
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔

This is the very first fight in which Roksana rides her steed into battle, and so far Kasper has proved to be a brave and trusty mount…even though Roksana still needs to hone her riding skills. The half-orc cavalier tries to ride Kasper with her knees, a not so difficult task for a skilled rather, but her armor hinders her movement enough to be forced to use her shield hand in order to direct her mount toward the owlbear. As a result, her warhammer swing in inaccurate and misses the fiery beast, while Kasper’s attack hits, causing the owlbear to roar furiously in response.

Jacobus, mace drawn, tries to take advantage of the surrounded owlbear to strike with his weapon, but despite Roksana’s barked tips his mace fails to connect with the raging beast.

In the meantime, Serolt shoots his bow with deadly accuracy, knowing that him and his allies need to put down the owlbear before Regin loses too much blood and bleeds to her death. The shoanti archer’s arrow penetrate through the owlbear flesh, hitting the beast in its neck and causing a bad, bleeding wound.

Fortunately, at least for Kryolani, the owlbear’s attention has been caught by Rok’s and Jacobus’ combined attack. The beast roars furiously, the echo of his roar spreading in the silent plains and almost shaking the very ground around it. The creature focuses its attacks on Jacobus, raging with its claws and bites: the first attack is a piercing bite. The beast’s owl-like beak penetrates in Jacobus’ right shoulder, causing an aching pain in the wounded inquisitor. Right after, the Brevic man gets clawed twice and almost torn apart by the two combined attack. The owlbear is surprisingly quick despite its size, and manages to hit Jacobus with both of its claws, lacerating the inquisitor’s skin. But the owlbear isn’t done yet, for it still has the energy to grab the inquisitor in its grasp, holding him tight in its razor-sharp claws as the man struggles to break free.

Ouch! Three consecutive hits! Jacobus takes 19 points of damage and is grappled!

Kryolani speaks some hasted, arcane words, gesturing strangely as he casts a spell that causes a light-blu ray of necromantic energy to hit the owlbear. The creature roars, its head raised to the sky in fury, but cannot avoid the ray. You can see clearly that Kryolani’s ray has weakened the beast, although you’re not able to assess how much. Hopefully, it would be enough for Jacobus to break free from the owlbear’s grapple!

He fished out the curing wand and tended to Regin first. Once the cat was meowing, he looked after his own wounds.

As his eyes open - likely after a wand charge or two are also added, Regin licks Serolt's hand, looking up at him... Did we get it?

He ruffles his fur and comforts him as strength is returned and Regin paws the ground, as good as new. Ahhh, the power of magic. sighs Serolt, pleased with the outcome.

He finally turns his attention to the great owl bear.

"My but that was a nasty bird. Anyone know if they nest?"

He checks the ground beyond the combat site for tracks.

The owlbeast's lair does not contain anthing noteworthy apart from the bodies of two dead humans. One of them appears to have been a bandit, while the other one seems like a hunter. Although the bandit's body has long since rotted away and nothing remains of its equipment, the hunter's body still has on it several useful object. On the hunter's body you found three different quivers: one filled with 14 normal arrows, one containing 20 thistle arrows (see this thread to find out more about these arrows), and another one filled with 5 masterwork arrows. Lying near to the hunter's body there's his longbow.

The rain keeps pouring down on the Greenbelt: your clothes are wet, and your mood is not so good due to the precipitation, but you forge ahead stubbornly. After all, you’re so eager to complete your task that a mere rain cannot stop you so easily!

As you explore this area, you stumble across several hunting trails, commonly used by the Greenbelt hunters. And it’s exactly while you’re leading your horses through one of this trails, the terrain turned into mud by the thick rain, that you notice a lonely boar in front of you. As soon as it spots you, the boar shows a clear intention of fleeing, but would you let it? After all, a boar would prevent you from consuming your valued trail rations!

"Yes!" Roksana shouts as she strikes true, crippling the boar before Kryo finishes it off. "That was fun!" She smiles as she rides triumphantly around the boar for a moment and then directs Kasper toward Serolt for some playful ribbing before they collect their trophy.

"So much for the beast lure. Seems we attract boars just fine on our own." A quick hunt and a good meal were a nice change from the near death experience they'd had just a day before and Roksana was more than willing to enjoy it all to the sound of the rain falling around them that evening.

"I'm going to have to right to the bows in my old company. They'll never believe I'm riding horseback now. I was alway to stubborn to bother learning, but something about this horse of mine..." She trails off with a rare giggle as Kasper snorts and nips at her.

"This job has certainly had some unexpected developments. What do you suppose we'll be doing once we've finished charting the area?"

The next day the rain has ceased falling. You wake up at dawn and begin exploring the planned area.

---

While the group explores this area, Serolt notices a hidden cairn of stones marking the grave of a long forgotten barbarian, lying amid an overgrown section of blackberries. A DC 20 Perception check is required to notice the cairn while exploring this hex.

Toppling the stones and digging up the body below takes a good 30 minutes of work. Once exhumed, the body still wears tattered and rotted remnants of hide armor, and the skull still displays the crushed-in side that spelled this barbarian’s doom. Of all the barbarian’s gear, only a strange ring made of green wood on one finger seems of interest—the ring depicts an eel and a frog locked in a tangle.

Identifying the ring ⇒ DC 17 Spellcraft check:
This is a ring of swimming.

Kryolani turns the simple, wooden ring over and over in his fingers, feeling his way through the energies it contains.

"I'm sorry, I'm not sure what this does. It's either imbued with magic of a kind I've not encountered before, or imbued in a way unfamiliar to me. It is magic, but I'll require more study before I could tell you what kind."

He taps the ring on his palm thoughtfully a few times before continuing, "We could ask Jhod to take a look, the next time we stop by his temple. He might recognize it better than I."

"Ahhh, that makes sense. Praise Abadar! I was looking for an arcane energy signature, when you're right, it's probably divine. Whoever DOES wear this thing across rivers should probably be whoever is strong enough to haul the end of a rope with them so the rest of us poor saps can have something to hold onto while we make our way across."

Kryolani thinks about the poor woman in the cage. Bandit or not, no one deserves such a fate.

"I'd love to turn this region into something a bit safer, and a lot less filled with bandits. I bet that if we're not eventually tasked with taming it, someone else will be brought in to do so. As he moves closer to the statue, Serolt feels safe and at peace. You decide to camp here for the night.

Serolt enjoys the home-cooked meal and thanks the men profusely for the hospitality. He again offers to help out, but isn't surprised when there's not much for him to do. Makes sense they'd do the easy straight labor stuff first, and they had been gone a while.

Once on the road again he's happy and confident. When he sees the statue he's elated. "Can you imagine that here? I wonder who the craftsman was, and why he, or she, chose to build this here?"

He spends a portion of his watch cleaning it up a little, though he's careful not to remove its rustic charm by cleaning it up too much! When the party is ready to depart, he places a single gold coin on the statue's base by way of tribute.

He laughs as he turns away and mounts Mitzy, "I bet some bandit will be pleased to find that coin huh?"

He rides on.

Kryolani muses, "You know, an uncle of mine had this theory that there was really no such thing as charity. He thought that money was what made the world go round, and any act that caused it to change hands had a positive effect on things. If you give a gold coin to a poor person, you weren't really throwing it away. What you were doing was simultaneously investing in the local baker, or innkeep, or whoever the beggar got his grub from, as well as in property values, because the beggar is no longer in the street, and even occasionally in the beggar himself, as he got his feet back under him and would always remember the hand that lifted him up. It all came round to benefit him in the end, so he didn't worry about the money he tithed to the church."

Kryolani laughed, "Listen to me, talking like he was a nice guy. The man was a mean old goat who drove more than one competitor into the poor house, but he knew how to make coin, that was for sure. Anyway, these are wild lands out here, more the home of Deadeye, than of Abadar. If a coin at his feet keeps him happy, I'm all for it."

The sorcerer shrugs aside the criticism of his uncle, mostly because he agreed with the sentiment, "I'm pretty certain old Uncle Fabius never once in his life tried to lift anyone up but himself. He was a cruel man with an evil temper. He also donated a few thousand gold each year to a number of educational institutions throughout northern Brevoy. He was a..." Kryolani struggles for a moment, searching for the proper words "...an interesting man. A lot of power in the local political scene, pretty much universally hated, and yet he also gave away extravagant amounts of money to causes that didn't ever seem to benefit him directly. I'd never take his advice when it comes to a moral stance, but as to the proper handling of money? He'd give a high priest of Abadar a run for his money, so to speak." Kryolani finishes the speech with a little smile for the pun, obviously not meaning it to be taken too literally.

The next day you move west, determined to explore the new area. As soon as you walk into the new area, however, something unusual happens. In the middle of the forest you spot a faintly glowing ball of light bobbing gently in the air, the nebulous image of what might be a skull visible somewhere in its depths.

DC 16 Knowledge (dungeoneering) check:
The glowing ball of light is in truth a will o’ wisp, an extremely dangerous creature. Every trapper and bog farmer living near marshes or swamps has his own name for these faintly glowing balls of light—jack o' the lanterns, corpse candles, walking fires, pine lights, spooklights, rushlights—but all recognize them as dangerous predators and false guides in the dark-ness.
Evil creatures that feed on the strong psychic emanations of terrified creatures, will-o'-wisps delight in tempting gullible travelers into dangerous situations. In the wild lands where they're most common, will-o'-wisps favor simple tactics like positioning themselves over cliffs or quicksand where they can easily be mistaken for lanterns (especially if they can set their traps near actual signal lanterns), allowing them to lure unwary travelers into perilous situations. On rare occasions, will-o'-wisps seeking easier pickings will move into a city and take up residence near gallows or follow along invisibly behind an army in order to harvest the fear of the dying men; why the vast majority choose to remain in the swamps where victims are scarce remains a mystery. Will-o'-wisps only use their electric shock ability under extreme duress, preferring to let other creatures or hazards claim their victims while they float nearby and feast.
Will-o'-wisps can glow any color they choose, but are most frequently yellow, white, green, or blue. They can even vary their luminosity to create patterns—many will-o'-wisps are fond of creating vague skull-like shapes in their glow to further terrify their victims. Their actual bodies are barely visible globes of translucent spongy material 1 foot across and weighing 3 pounds, capable of emitting light from every surface. A will-o'-wisp's light is approximately as bright as a torch, and though they do not seem to use sound to communicate with each other, they hear perfectly and can vibrate their bodies rapidly to simulate speech.
While vilified by most other sentient creatures, will-o'-wisps are actually quite intelligent, if utterly alien in their reasoning. Sometimes organized into groups called “strings,” their society and goals remain complete unknowns to outsiders, as do their origins, though they have sometimes been known to strike bargains with those who can offer them vast quantities of appropriately frightened victims. As will-o'-wisps do not age, and are effectively immortal unless killed by violence, particularly ancient will-o'-wisps can serve as fantastic repositories of knowledge from the ancient past, although convincing one of these cruel creatures to cooperate with an interrogation can be a trick in and of itself.
