As Serolt begins crossing the bridge, the wooden structure starts to groan and creak ominously. Once the Shoanti archer has walked for about 100 feet across the bridge, it starts to groan and creak even louder. Suddenly, several of the bridge’s planks give way. Thankfully, Serolt is able to dive for safety on the other side of the gap, and even Mitsy manages to jump away from the danger, reaching Serolt on the other side of the gap in the bridge. The two then make their way to the opposite side of the bridge without any further danger.

"Walk Any Road, Float Any River." Roksana says as the men discuss the bridge and what may lie beyond. "That means no tolls, and no one blocking the way. Anyone charging for crossing this thing is going to answer to me."

She looks over the wooden bridge and does her best to determine it's strength, but in the end, she starts crossing too once/if Serolt has made it about halfway across. Assuming he doesn't ask her to wait still of course.

"Hey Serolt are you alright?" Rok shouts when she sees the man and his animals leaping forward. "How bad is it?"

She continues crossing put holds her hand up so that the others will wait. She raises her eyebrow as she notices her own horse pacing nervously but she shakes her head and turns her focus to crossing.

Kryolani listens at wind whistles through the gulch, and the near-collapse bridge sways gently in the breeze.

"I really don't want to cross this thing on my horse. Maybe I can get it to walk across to Serolt and Rok ahead of me?" he ponders to himself.

Watching the bridge shudder under the weight of the two riders in front of him, he decides to hang back until Roksana is well and truly clear of the other side before trying to tempt his mount across.

Roksana is able to cross the bridge without any difficulties, although the bridge keeps groaning and creaking ominously. Her horse is now several hundreds feet behind her, and you will have to find a way to make her horse traverse the bridge.

Although brilliant, Kryolani's idea to take Roksana's horses on the other side of the river doesn't work as intended. Kasper is simply too afraid to accept the idea of crossing the dangerous wooden bridge.

As such, Kryolani is forced to try and walk Kasper across the bridge himself. But the result is...well, the result is just bad. As Kryolani is walking Kasper across the bridge, it starts to groan and creak ominously and at some point during their walk on the bridge, a few crucial planks plunges into the water below under the pressure of the sorcerer's and horse's combined weight. Thankfully, both the sorcerer and Roksana's mount manage to jump just at the right time, avoiding a dangerous fall. They both reach the other side of the river then.

---

Now, there are only Jacobus, his horse, Regin and Kryolani's horse on the other side of the bridge.

Two tries and fails were enough for Jacobus. Both Serolt and Kryo had to jump off the bridge at a time not of their own choosing and had to swim to the other side. The bridge looked even more dangerous than it was before. He now had to jump some missing planks at two locations. Not good.

The young man shook his head, "Uh, uh." Jacobus would calmly walk the two remaining horses down to the river's edge, take off his armor and put it on the horses, and swim across.

"Oh, thanks Kryo! I was going to come back and get him if I thought it was safe, but once I saw you on the bridge I didn't want to risk the added weight." Rok pats the chestnut affectionately and looks back to across the gulch, and sees Jacobus move toward the river with the last two horses.

"Can't say I blame him for that decision, I'm the only one that didn't almost plunge into the river. Maybe when we get back to Oleg's we can see about getting people out here to fix this bridge."

Council of Thieves Maps

Swimming across the river proves a harder than expected task for Jacobus and the two horses. The Brevic man, even after having taken off his armor, struggles to win the river's current. He needs several attempts before realising how to properly swim through the river without being submerged every two or three strokes. The horses as well experience some hard times trying to navigate the 300 feet long river.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the bridge, the group camps and waits for Jacobus and the two horses to arrive. They wait for much longer then they initially expected, and the whole day passes by.

---

After 7 hours of useless attempts, eventually Jacobus and both of the horses manage to finally reach the other side of the river. The sun has just gone down when they arrive, and this day of exploration is completely wasted.

The next morning, you wake up early in the morning and move to the next area as soon as possible. You’re aware that a rainstorm will hit the Greenbelt in the afternoon, so you do your best to haste your exploration and find a comfortable and repaired shelter where to take refuge from the storm by the afternoon. As such, you’re not able to complete your exploration of this area, and you’re forced to delay its completion to the next day.

During the day, you’ve stumbled an unusual amount of little, dead bodies: although many of them were easily recognizable as kobolds, at least half of the corpses belonged to strange, squat humanoids, their skin of a peculiar blue hue and their big heads unbelievably ugly.

Identify the creatures ⇒ DC 10 Knowledge (nature) check:
These small, ugly creatures are known as mites. Mites are evil and sadistic fey creatures. Descended from even smaller fey, the mites are among the most pitiful and craven dwellers of the dark. Hideously ugly, even goblins have been known to mock mites for their homely appearances, mockery most mites take to heart and nurture for weeks, months, or even years in their tiny homes, until their distress and anger finally overcome their natural cowardice and impel them forth on short-lived bouts of bloody vengeance from the doubtful safety of a spider's back.
Mites, once closer to the strange realm of the fey, have grown larger and stockier after countless generations spent on the Material Plane. Yet still, their stature places them at the bottom of the pile in the dangerous caverns in which they live. Their traditional enemies are dwarves, kobolds, and gnomes, particularly the svirfneblin of the deep underground caves. The one thing that gives them a significant edge over an enemy in a fight is their natural ability to empathize with normally mindless vermin—mites are particularly fond of spiders, centipedes, and cave fishers, and a mite colony usually has a few of these far more dangerous monsters on hand to defend the group.

▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔

It’s afternoon, and unfortunately you’ve not found a proper shelter where to repair from the incoming storm yet. The sky begins grumbling and groaning ominously as the first lightings pierce the clouds. Soon thereafter, the rain starts falling and the wind howling. You really need to find a shelter, the sooner the better.

As you’re hasting through the Kamelands searching for a shelter, you stumble across a graying hulk of a sycamore tree clinging precariously to its last years of life. The tree looms over all the hills in the northern Kamelands. The 100-foot-tall tree is a well-known landmark and is visible for miles around. While most of the group is too worried to care about the tree and examine it attentively, Jacobus is calm and rational as always, and he’s the only one who’s able to spot a suitable shelter just before you. His keen eyes allows the Brevic man to spot an entrance hidden amid the ancient tree’s roots. This entrance consists of a root-lined shaft that drops 10 feet down to the middle of a 40-foot tunnel. The roots would allow an easy navigation of this shaft.

Now, will you enter the shaft? If so, please attempt a Climb check to descend the shaft. The roots make this climb quite easy. Unfortunately, the shaft is too small to allow your horses to climb it down, so you have to find an alternative solution to leave them somewhere safe. Also, Regin must be dealt with: Serolt’s firepelt cougar would experience some hard times in the attempt to climb down the shaft, and it’s probably better to leave it somewhere safer. It’s up to you to decide how would you like to solve these problems. As always, mounts and animal companions cause a lot of trouble to an adventuring party, but since you’ve chosen to carry them along, now you have to find a solution. I must also specify that in all of the lands you’ve explored so far, you hadn’t been able to spot even a single suitable shelter, so this sycamore appears to be the only chance for you to avoid being exposed to the storm.

"And they usually come with spiders, or worse, centipedes. Ugh."

Just the idea of those creepy, many-legged bugs puts her off and she moves quickly away from any of the dead.

As the day continues and the storm approaches Roksana tries to find any shelter suitable for the party, but not too hard, she's weathered storms before. When Jacobus finds the hidden shaft she dismounts and pulls a rope from her pack.

"We might as well check it out, who knows how long this rain will last and you boys get all sour when you're wet. I can see in the dark, so I'll climb down first and let you boys know if it's worth coming down." She pats her horse and tells him to be good. "Keep the other horses safe while we're gone, yeah? Guard them well."

Then she fastens the rope where every she can and starts her descent.

Council of Thieves Maps

Serolt and Roksana are the first one to enter the underground chamber you've chosen to explore first. Jacobus and Kryolani are a few feet back, but they can see the scene in front of their allies as well.

Three crude, wooden workbenches occupy the center of this room, their tops strewn with various tiny tools, metal and wooden hardware, and blocks of wood.

There's a slope to the southwest that quickly becomes a 30-foot-deep shaft that drops into another area. The walls of the shaft are thick with hanging roots, allowing for an easy climb. The slope to northeast leads to the junction between the exit shaft and another 20-foot-long tunnel leading to another area.

A pair of mites scurry about this room, engaged in a strange competition using a strange device, a sort of miniature catapult rigged out of bones and branches. The two take turns firing caltrops at one another's open mouth. The goal, apparently, is to see who can get the most caltrops into the other's mouth before they run out of caltrops, but since each mite swallows the caltrop when a hit is scored, they're running out relatively quickly. However, the caltrops do not appear to be damaging the mites.

As soon as they see you, one of the mites shrieks and charges to engage you in melee, while the othee one uses the caltrop tosser to throw caltrops.

"Remember when I said Mites were nastier than Kobolds? This is no misunderstanding!" Roksana huffs as she moves to engage the sadistic little beasts.

Kryolani leans this way and that, looking for a clear shot to send his flames at the Mites, but finding nothing.

"I've decided I dislike tunnel fighting! I don't have the right tools for it!"

Abandoning his plan to throw flames around in the confined space, he instead steps up and prepares to burn any foes that might seek to take the group from the rear.

Serolt’s arrow hits one of mites, killing it instantly before it can even act. Jacobus misses the mite in front of him with his mace, while Roksana manage to hit it, but strangely her swing is not able to finish the creature. Although fuzzy because of the hit just taken, the mite tries to flee, and withdraws through the slope to southwest, shrieking cowardly.

He follows it into the passage, hurrying to try and stop his screaming. As soon as he catches sight of it, he shoots!

Kryolani steps into the room where the first Mite was slain, scanning for the unexpected while the others take off after the one that escaped.

Not seeing a foe that he could assist with, the nobleman scoops up a small rock from the floor and casts Light on it. This seems like it would be a relatively terrible place to be caught in the dark, and Kryolani has no intention of doing so if he happens to get separated from the others.

He also doesn't speak. The group is loud enough as it is, and who knows what prowls these tunnels. Something about being in the little cave sparks a feeling almost predatory in the sleight man. It's unnerving, but better than the fear that accompanies battle so often. He focuses on relaxing his hands so his claws don't slide out on their own as he makes his way down the tunnel.

Council of Thieves Maps

Serolt tries to follow the mite as fast as he can, but when he arrives adjacent to the slope, he curses his decision to cast his lighting spell on his belt, because the current position of the light doesn’t allow him to see neither the mite nor what’s going on below at all.

Jacobus decides to chase the mite down the slope and starts climbing down. He decides to risk the climb although he cannot see much in the dark. Unfortunately, Jacobus is not a nimble climber, and he isn’t able to climb down the shaft. He almost falls down due to his armor impeding his movements, but thankfully he manages to grab on to a hanging root on the wall of the shaft.

Roksana quickly joins her allies and looks down the shaft where the mite has vanished into. Her half-orc eyes allow her to glimpse a tiny creature resembling to a screaming mite landing almost 30 feet below at the bottom of the shaft and running away soon thereafter.

Everyone, including Kryolani, can hear high-pitched cries of terror from someone in the shaft below. Each painful shriek elicits a fresh wave of giggles and cheers. Then, both the cries of pain and the giggles cease suddenly. Only the faint, squeaky voice of a frightened mite can be heard, but their language is unintelligible for you. One thing is sure, though: when the frightened mite is done speaking, you are some sort of shrilling battle-cry coming from below. Jacobus, who’s still holding on to a hanging root in the shaft, can hear the sound of several tiny feet rushing through the cave under him.

Council of Thieves Maps

Roksana's second attempt to climb down the shaft is unsuccessful as the first one, and the half-orc finds herself still holding on to a hanging root on the edge of the shaft.

As time passes by, you can hear that the mites battlecries have come to an halt. No one is screaming down there, apart from a single, desperate voice.

Serolt shrugs when the mites aren’t forthcoming. ”Damn, wrong again. I guess we have to climb.”

If the walls and roots look as good as any rope he’d throw down, he just goes with what’s there. If not, he takes out his rope and throws it down hooking the grapple to the dirt/roots/whatever.

Roksana manages to reach the bottom of the shaft as quickly as an expert climber would. Serolt manages to climb down the shaft only partially, and he's currently at 15 feet from the ground below, just like Jacobus who's a few feet above his Shoanti ally.

---

As Roksana lands, she sees that the walls of this egg-shaped cavern are obscured by thick tangles of long, pallid roots. To the east, the chamber opens into a wide, root-filled chasm.

The room is filled with silent mites. They begin to giggle eerily as Roksana touches the ground and prepare for battle. There are six mites in this group. Four black-scaled kobolds have been tied into the roots along the northern wall. Only one of them seems to be alive. As revealed by the huge number of sharp stick lying on the ground near the kobold, it seems like you've interrupted a torture.
