Council of Thieves Maps

______________________________________
Enter the Stolen Lands, a wilderness claimed by nobles, bandits, and beasts alike. Into this territory the fractious country of Brevoy sends its emissaries, tasking them with subduing the lawless folk and deadly creatures that have made it a realm of savagery and shame. Beyond the last rugged frontier stretches the home of voracious monsters, capricious fey, wily natives, and bandits who bow to the rule of a merciless lord none dare defy. Can the PCs survive the Stolen Lands, bring their dangers to heel, and lay the foundations of a new kingdom? Or will they just be one more fateful band, lost forever to the ravenous wilds?

---

Be it so known that the bearer of this charter has been charged by the Swordlords of Restov, acting upon the greater good and authority vested within them by the office of the Regent of the Dragonscale Throne, has granted the right of exploration and travel within the wilderness region known as the Greenbelt. Exploration should be limited to an area no further than thirty-six miles east and west and sixty miles south of Oleg’s Trading Post. The carrier of this charter should also strive against banditry and other unlawful behavior to be encountered. The punishment for unrepentant banditry remains, as always, execution by sword or rope.”
— So witnessed on this 24th day of Calistril, under watchful eye of the Lordship of Restov and authority granted by Lord Noleski Surtova, current Regent of the Dragonscale Throne.

Three days ago you discovered to have been selected from the Sworldlords for the important task of exploring and mapping the Greenbelt, a large area in The Stolen Lands where the Restovian government hopes to bring order and civilization. Among your official duties, apart from exploring and mapping these lands, there are a few other tasks: fight both the banditry for which The Stolen Lands are renowned and the dangerous monsters which calls the Greenbelts home and that pose (and have posed) a serious threat to all of the attempts to bring civilization in those wildlands. The Aldori Swordlors have given each of you an official piece of paper detailing your duties and powers in The Stolen Lands* along with a large map in which the general geographical structure of The Stolen Lands is shown**. No mention of an eventual role as future leaders has been made on the Swordlords’ part.

---

You’ve had three days to buy and sell items, adjust your adventuring gear and send the proper letters to your family (if you have one) and friends.

---

Now, on the 27th day of Calistril, you are ready to depart from Restov. You’ve been told to start with reaching Oleg’s Trading Post, on the southern border of Brevoy. The Trading Post is going to be your first and foremost base of operation, from where to depart to the Greenbelt to the south. Oleg’s Trading Post is located at the southern edge of Rostland (and thus Brevoy). To the south, the green line of the Narlmarches looms only a few miles away. Owned and operated by a stern and somewhat unimaginative man named Oleg Leveton and his wife Svetlana, the trading post’s remote location and inconvenient distance from a major river has prevented it from realizing significant financial success, at least until now, but it remains the safest place where to plan your next move between one exploring mission and another.

---

The travel will take about 5 days if you travel light. No dangers are to be expected from this travel, since you’re simply going to walk through a well-known trade route and the roads and paths are constantly watched over by the Restovian border sentinels. You’re going to remain within Brevan borders during this travel, so there is no reason to worry about bandits and dangerous monsters; not yet, at least.

Alright guys, you can use this roleplaying scene as a mean to actually taste a bit of roleplay before we get properly started. Please avoid rolling dice. Use this roleplay hook to let your characters come together and begin better knowing each other. You can discuss any kind of subject you may want to, but always keep in mind that even though this is a sort of “prequel” to the actual adventure, I’m going to consider everything which is going to be said or done in your next posts as actual gameplay. I would like you to introduce yourselves to the other or (if you’ve done that already in the Recruitment Thread) just start with acquire a bit of familiarity with your teammates.

Serolt looks at the charter with some amount of awe. 36 miles by 60 miles huh? By Erastil that’s a big area. He wonders idly if their small group can even cover that much terrain let alone subdue it in any meaningful way. No man dies wishing he had worked more. But I did sign up for this. Adventure and all that.

He leans down and ruffles Regin’s fur a little as he walks with his horse walking alongside. He whispers to him, ”We’ll manage, won’t we boy?” Regin plays with a dust mote and doesn’t answer.

He turns to the others, ”So… bandits. We chatted a bit about them with the others, but now it’s just us we should talk further.” he takes a deep breath and presses on, rushing slightly as he’s nervous and excited. ”I guess technically, anyone who crosses us is a bandit by some definition as we’re now the law. I’d like to think though that we’ll take a somewhat, ah, flexible view of those who might be a little hard up, maybe even pity.”

”I don’t know about you all, but I’ve been hungry. I was lucky enough, and skilled enough, to find my own way out, but my path is not for everyone, and I understand the desperation that can drive some men… and women, to banditry. I say if they yield, we let them go. Further, we don’t kill those we fell in combat, excepting as it happens naturally.”

”Now I’m not saying we devote resources to their health and well being, though I may from my personal funds, but rather we give them a second chance.” his face darkens, ”Those we face twice though… no quarter. I’m also less sure of those who threaten any settlements we come across. It’s one thing to waylay a small group on the road, collecting a few loose coins that someone may have. It is quite another to mess with a man’s home and livelihood.”

He trails off and looks to the others for their thoughts.

A note about the treasure sheet - it's not intended to track your items or wealth. This is a tool to track our shares and where incoming items end up (usually sold, but we'll see). If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

And so it is judged..."

Jacobus nods as Serolt states his proposed modus operandi with regards to bandits.

"Yes, I agree and I must say that I am glad that I am not in the company of killers."

Serolt he knows but he once more sizes up the mercenary half-orc, the human sorcerer, and the human...er... Jacobus doesn't quite knows what Reknar would provide but he trusts the Swordlords to have made a good choice.

He fingers his golden key, "By Abadar, we will bring security to any and all fledgling communities by ridding them of monsters, be them four-legged or two-legged ones."

He then looks back at his new companions, "Although I already know some of you, I'm not sure everyone is aware of everyone else's gifts so I'll start."

The inquisitor continued, "I can call upon Abadar's blessings for minor healing and can usually see through any lies. If you trust me, I can be the face of our group and I intend to use diplomatic ways to achieve our goals." He palmed his mace, "But I can crack a few skulls if it comes to that."

"Who's next?"

Kryolani strides alongside Serolt and Jacobus, looking every inch of a man desperate for his aching feet to get used to this whole "constantly walking" business, and determined not to complain about it. Out loud anyway. He may or may not have muttered something about renting a horse beneath his breath, but mutterings hardly count.

"Leniency is traditionally the right of the judge, and that pretty much means us, if I read this charter correctly. So we can let them go. I'm less certain that we should. At least not without some way to assure they won't return to the trade. Bandits won't be attacking us with scowls and harsh language, they'll be trying to kill us, and even if we can take them, the next folks down the line might not be able to."

"Letting a man who has proven to be willing to kill an innocent for his supper go free might also mean condemning another innocent to death."

The sorcerer strokes his thin and well trimmed goatee as he considers the problem, "I'm not saying you're wrong. Leniency and forgiveness has it's place, and I'm not sure I've got the stomach to kill a helpless man regardless, even if he did just get done trying to poke holes in me. But I think we need to take away his weapons at least, no matter that it will become harder for him to hunt."

He shakes his head, "Anyway, gifts, right. Turns out someone down the Surtova family line had dealings with a dragon. My....gifts are a product of that. If I need to defend myself, I can weaken an enemy or set him aflame. I can also create light, clean things with magic, and a few other minor tricks. I've studied both mortal law and mystical, so that may be of some use. Also, there's these..." Kryolani holds up a hand, and a set of claws slide out of his fingertips, an inch long apiece and razor sharp, "...but I'd rather avoid using them. I'm not really much of a fighter, I wouldn't really know how."

"I agree there is a risk, but being a judge makes me nervous. Do I have the wisdom to pass such a permanent judgement? I don't know, but I don't feel that I do. Maybe that's a good sign." Serolt laughs.

He walks along in silence a while, struggling with his own thoughts.

Roksana remains mostly quiet as the others discuss the bandit issue again. She takes the time to appreciate being back on the road, the sound of her shield tapping against the armor on her back marks the timing of her steps and she hums quietly with the rhythm.

"I see Serolt's point." She says finally, still humming between statements. "Killing an opponent in battle is one thing, but if they've surrendered you either take them prisoner or let them go. Both the military and the mercenary codes follow the same principle."

"But depending on how well the bandits know the area, we could end up watching out backs the whole time, wondering if every criminal we let go is going to lead another group right back to us." She frowns and looks over her new companions, sizing them up.

"As capable as we seem, a battle of attrition in the wilderness is going to cost us dearly. Not that I'm signing up to skewer every man and woman we knock out in battle, but there are some very real consequences to consider."

Reknar couldn't feign his surprise at being chosen from among so many candidates - when he first set out to Restov, he was expecting the Swordlords to be looking for nothing more than hired swords to 'bring civilization' to untamed lands, and that was exactly what he had been for the past months - a blade for those who would pay for it.

But after he arrived, there was much talk of kingdom building and whatnot, eventually leading him to start believing he was in the wrong place... After all, who would hire an ex convict, and former army sergeant to do anything of the sort..?

Yet... There it was. He had been picked. Not one to dwell too much on the ifs and whys, he just shrugged it away with a smile, complimenting the other applicants who were not chosen, and moving off to the next stage of it all, still shaking his head.

-----

Since we can check Handout #2 at any time during our travels, I'm going to assume we are in the possession of a similar map GM Giuseppe? Let me know if I am in the wrong ;)

The man leaned on the table with both hands, the charter to one side, and the map to the other, staring at the documents intently, but listening to the conversation.

"I still think we need to take it one step at a time Serolt" - he pipes in - "I am not in the habit of murdering a beaten sorry bastard after he or she is down" - the man seems to be thinking back on something - "But I gotta admit it will depend on a number of things... Say he has burned a farmstead to the ground with the family inside? Or that he just slit the throat of one of my own fellows? Can't say I won't pay him back in kind" - he growls.

"But yes, having some sort of idea agreed upon just before we set out will be a good thing - it will make us act and look more like a team if we are not debating our choices every step of the way" - he nods - "You guys heard me back in the courtyard - I can relate to second chances, so there is merit in all said here. We cannot be fully responsible for what goes on during a scuffle, it is not exact science after all" - he chuckles - "I may be aiming for the chest, and end up severing an arm. But we can agree on some basics like you all have pointed out - some sort of middle ground maybe? Say, we spare them if we can, and let them off with some means of survival in the wild, like a dagger or some other single weapon, food, drink, and above all, a warning? That 'there will be no second chances'? What do you say?"

Even before the others respond, he does add - "Still, on the fly things can change. There are those who simply need to be put down like rabid dogs. But we will have a base line to steer us, even though obviously all get to say their piece freely"

Looking back at Jacobus he continues - "As for gifts... Dunno. An old friend of mine explained I packed some sort of spontaneous magic, though I have no idea where the heck that would have come from" - Reknar simply laughs - "I just know it allows me some tricks like minor healing, and some other knick knacks - honestly I'm not yet sure of all I can do" - and shrugs again.

"Apart from that, I can swing a weapon, I can bargain enough to save mine, or other's lives, I know my way in the wild and in the city" - the man scratches his head - "No one really ever asked that of me - gifts you say..? I've been commended for whipping others into decisive action back in the day. Some even respected me for that. But it was a long time ago, and not everyone is into that" - he grins.

-----

"Let me just throw up a few other things into the debate though - about the task ahead" - he changes the subject to something more pragmatic - "I'm thinking we should pool some resources together - I've got some gold on me. True, it isn't much, but if we all chip in, maybe we can at least get a mule, a cart, and some decent provisions? Out of the top of my head, I think we should also go for some stuff that can help us get by in the wild if we get sidetracked for some reason - hunting and fishing tools for one"

Again he looks at the map - "This Trading Post, and Oleg - do we know anything else about them? Like, for example, what do they trade in? If they peddle any particular merchandise, or work like some sort of general outpost? I understand it is to be our base of operations, but is Oleg eve aware of that, or will it simply be the place we set base camp on?"

Tracing the southern portion of the map, Reknar carries on - "The Narlmarches - do you guys know anything about it?"

I would roll some Knowledges and stuff, since Reknar may actually know something more about this, but the GM has asked for no rolls for the time being :D

Jacobus nods as the conversation continues, "I may be the most representative with regards to laws among of all us but..."

He paused for a second before continuing, "Obeying laws does not mean being stupid so I'm all for leniency to bandits, I am even more for offering those that follow the law some protection."

He looked about, fingered his golden key, "I think we all agree that there won't be any rampart killing but it will be a case by case as to what we do with bandits."

He put a hand in his pockets and came up with some 8 gold coins, "It's a good idea to pool resources together. I may be able to obtain discounts on some of the basic travel needs. or we could try and secure a loan if we need to. I would be more than happy to obtain that if desired."

Council of Thieves Maps

The Aldori Swordlords have not provided you with additional information about Oleg other than what was explicitly told you in your last meeting before your departure. Maybe, asking someone around could reveal some useful information*.

---

Information about the Narlmarches ⇒ DC 15 Knowledge (geography) check:
The Narlmarches, also known as the Narlmarch Woods, bifurcate the Stolen Lands. The Narlmarches spreads across the lowlands of the region and feature craggy hills, lazy streams, deep ravines, and a great variety of trees, including oak, beech, and rushleaf.

Information about the Narlmarches ⇒ DC 15 Knowledge (local) check:
Gangs of trolls range the southern edge of the forest, closer to Lake Candlemere, and the ruins of many bandit hideouts dot the landscape as well, leading to rumors of long lost riches and fantastic treasures.

Information about the Narlmarches ⇒ DC 15 Knowledge (nature) check:
The region hosts a rich variety of wildlife as well, with elk, rivercats (a cousin to the bobcat, with a strange sort of mossy-fur), black bears, many large rodents, boars, and brush thyclacines. Stranger still are the giant owls, will-o'-wisps, owlbears, and aggressive vegetation.

---

Information about Oleg ⇒ DC 10 Diplomacy check:
Oleg is rumored to be a bad-tempered man, prone to sudden burst of rage. It's said that he has killed a wandering hunter with his axe just because the man asked him for some food.

Information about Oleg ⇒ DC 15 Diplomacy check:
Oleg Leveton is the owner of Oleg's Trading Post, a remote general store in the southern edges of Rostland. He lives there with his wife Svetlana. The rumors about Oleg's bad tempet are partially false: he has not killed anyone at all. He's still a volatile individual, though.

Information about Oleg ⇒ DC 20 Diplomacy check:
Oleg's Trading Post trades in furs, hunting traps, tools and other goods he imports from Restov directly to aid the Greenbelt hunters in their job.

Information about Oleg ⇒ DC 25 Diplomacy check:
Rumor has it that Oleg's Trading Post has been targeted from bandits several times in the last few months.

Alright, now that everyone has posted at least once, I think I can allow you to start rolling some dice. As I always say to my players, please do not peek at my spoilers unless you've overcome the appropriate check: that makes our game so much fun and is one of the strenghts of PbP, so let's try not to waste it!

* You can attempt a collective Diplomacy check to gather information. You can take the best result on the single skill check, adding a +2 bonus to the total result for each skill check totaling a result of at least 10, as for the "aid another" action. Note that you obtain all of the information with a lower DC compared to your skill check.

Reknar has been in a lot of places, and heard stories about as many others, but not much about the Narlmarches unfortunately - "I remember when I was travelling up here, some lads going on about how the southern edge of the forest has a bunch of trolls roaming around - closer to Lake Candlemere" - he shares with the others - "That and a lot of old, abandoned bandit dugouts around the area - all I've heard about the place to be honest"

Will hold on any RP regarding Oleg, but I'm assuming with that Diplomacy roll, I can readily take a peek at all the spoilers up to DC20, even before the others roll? Just curious :D

Also, are we assuming this is something we already know, or took the time to dig out during the last three days?

"It sounds like it's well that we're discussing what to do with them when we catch them, then. I can't imagine we won't cross at least a few of their kind on our way into the territory. Abandoned Bandit Dugouts tend to become 'Reoccupied Bandit Dugouts' sooner or later...but I think we all agree, no summary execution of prisoners without at least some discussion on the score. It also sounds like we're all ok with divesting them of any weaponry.

The more important point, to my mind, is that we need to rent a donkey and cart. This pack is quite heavy, and I think it's likely that whatever supplies we purchase or spoils we find will be heavier still. Unfortunately, my funds for this venture are shamefully limited. Four gold Brevics. That's it." the noble-born man seems embarrassed by the admission. Among others of his station, to leave on a journey with this tiny amount of money would be like leaving dressed in rags, wholly and shamefully inappropriate.

Jacobus was always seeking information and turned to one of his former guides, a man who had been to Oleg's Trading Post. The guide, an old, grizzled ranger told quite a bit about Oleg and his trading post.

Jacobus now shared the information with his new companions, "Oleg Leveton is the owner of Oleg's Trading Post, a remote general store in the southern edges of Rostland. He lives there with his wife Svetlana. The rumors about Oleg's bad tempet are partially false: he has not killed anyone at all. He's still a volatile individual, though."

He then added, "Trading with Oleg is good. Oleg's Trading Post trades in furs, hunting traps, tools and other goods he imports from Restov directly to aid the Greenbelt hunters in their job."

Once more he asked, "So are walking during our exploration or riding, at least part of the way?"

GM: will the Swordlords provide horses/wagon/anything? If we decide we want them, can we borrow the money since we obviously don't have money to buy them. I'm supposed to be in good standing with my 'rich merchant family' but I can see a reason why they would not lend me stuff if this would unbalance the game.

Pleased the others have so much useful information, he adds little of his own.

"I think, given our lack of funds, that we're walking at least for now. It would be good to move a little faster when we can, but that may be some time in coming." he says simply.

He continues helpfully, "I do have a horse, a fine steed, but I'm afraid I use her more as a pack animal than anything, and see no reason to change that now. So if you've supplies and equipment you'd rather not carry, by all means let's load her up!"

"As for the bandits, we are in agreement I think. No unnecessary slaughter and we'll sort out what to do as it happens."

He walks on, occasionally talking to Regin, occasionally talking to Mitzy (his horse) and generally paying attention to the trail, and possible ambush. He does not, routinely, walk with weapons out.

"Sounds like this Oleg fellow might be a bit rough. We should be careful when we meet him to put on a good face. If he's our contact with civilization for goods and services, we'll need to stay in his good graces."

"I've rations for a couple weeks, but if you lot have not brought any, that'll just last us three days. I can hunt as we move along, but that will slow us down considerably - and is unreliable. Rations are cheap and I'll gladly loan some of my dwindling supply of cash to purchase more - but I think we should keep as much as possible to our own purses."

"Pooling money leads to arguments over who got what out of the kitty. Sure, there are things that are clearly 'group goods', but mostly we should take care of ourselves. We're all adults here... right?" he laughs at himself playing adult.

Rations are just 1gp for four days, so load up. Sure they do weight a lot, but that's what Mitzy is for.

Kryolani barks a laugh at Rok, "Hopefully not too much farther. I'm not much of a rider myself, but I'd happily sit a useless old nag for a day or two rather than tromp about on foot any longer. Alas, likely not an option. Yet. I think the provision idea is the proper one. I've ten man-days worth in my backpack, but that's all. I am assuming the Lore Bonus will push us over the DC25 also?

After five days of travel through the South Rostland Road, you've finally reached your journey's destination: Oleg's trading post.

"Oleg’s trading post is surrounded by a wooden palisade that stands 10 feet high.
At each corner of the palisade are 20-footsquare watchtowers, each armed with a
run-down catapult likely left over from the site’s original use as a border fort.
There’s one entrance through the palisade—a 30-foot-wide wooden gate.
"

After some minutes spent someone to open the palisade for you, finally the wooden gate opens with an alarming creaking. Right before your eyes stands a not-so-tall blonde-haired woman. Her features are beatiful and fine, and her light-blue eyes appears to be mirroring the cold, clear sky itself. She wears a green bandanna in her hairs and she smiles with a warm and welcoming attitude. She's clearly not so surprised to see someone arriving; maybe she was waiting for you, somehow. Anyway, she also seems very happy for your arrival and quickly introduces herself with a frail voice: «Welcome, travelers! I suppose you're the adventurers they told us about from the city! I'm Svetlana Leveton, Oleg's wife. He's right he...Wait, where is...Oh, for Erastil!». The woman slighlty shakes her head as if she was reacting to an expected (and annoying) behavior.

Due to the brief pause, you have the time to take a peek at the trading post's inside. Before you there's an open area. The two tables near a fire pit host foodstuff and some wares, while bulky trade goods are offloaded into the storage pen. There's also a wooden wagon in the center of this open area, but it's currently empty.

Svetlana keeps looking around, thus giving you enough time to introduce yourselves to her. She nods to each of you as you introduce yourselves, but she's clearly distracted: she appears to be searching for someone.

Look around ⇒ DC 15 Perception check:
You spot a sturdy red-haired man busy repairing a leak in the roof over a wooden building to your right.

After introductions have been done, Svetlana focuses her attentions on you as she sighs: «I suppose you're going to meet the master of the house soon. He's...Let's say he's a bit busy now. He'll meet you soon. In the meantime, why don't you take a sit at one of the tables over there? You must be hungry from your recent travels...I'll serve you a warm meal in a moment. Make yourselves at home!», she says as she moves on entering into a wooden building to the north.

Kryolani doffs his cap, and bows. The bow is slight, but the smile accompanying it is a winning one, "Thank you ma'am. The hospitality is most graciously appreciated."

The slender man sits at the nearest table, resting his elbows on the wood, and clearly enjoying the chance to get off his feet for a few minutes.

His armor dusty from the travel and his belly sick of trail rations, the thought of a hot meal sounds great to the inquisitor. "Well, I for one will be most grateful for a hot meal."

He then points to the red-headed man up on the roof, "Is that who you're looking for? Looks like he's busy fixing the roof."

Having simple tastes, he enjoys pretty much anything put in front of him. "Food always tastes better when cooked by someone else doesn't it?" he chuckles.

He feeds Regin a little of his meal, and makes sure he has fresh water.

Master of the house. You can sit my adventurer lord», he says with a gruff tone to Reknar.

You have time to introduce yourselves to Oleg now: he will listen carefully to each of you as you speak, and give a firm if a bit rough handshake to any of you asking for that.

Few moments after introductions have been made, Svetlana returns from the building to the north carrying several dishes with her. The woman puts a large bowl of hearty stew on the table, along with warm bread and even a bottle of wine, «To thank you for coming to our aid», she explains as she puts the food and wine on the table, receiving a gruff look by his husband in return. «They're adventurers, Svetlana. They're not here to help us. They just want to explore this land, get some coins and promote "civilization"...Bah, "civilization"...», he mumbles Oleg turning to himself.

«You don't have to be always so pessimistic Oleg», replies Svetlana, staring at her husband and the adventurers at the same time, «maybe they will help if we ask them politely», she says smiling to you. Oleg grunts in response, as though he was sure there's no chance you would accept to help him. «Since my husband does not want to extend the benefit of the doubt upon you, I will do it. See this trading post? It has been a gathering and trading place for those hunters wandering the Greenbelt for quite a while now. But business just isn't so good of late, mostly because there are some bandits who think they can extort everything from us without asking twice. We need someone to aid us. We can't keep ignoring them. Their threats become worst as time passes, and their visit have turned much more frequent of late. Would you like to help us? I'm sure my husband will show you his gratitude if you could help us getting rid of these bandits, may Erastil curse their names», explains Svetlana.

Earlier
Serolt laughs at the complex discussions of riding. ”The real trick it to just stay on. You’ll figure out the rest with time and soreness. I don’t expect us to be riding our horses into battle - those steeds are very expensive, highly trained, and can be difficult to handle. No, we just need the basics, and I can teach you that in just a few tries I’m sure.”

”Combat riding is a whole other level, and not one that I’m very familiar with myself - and don’t particularly plan to be.”

At lunch
”Thank you for the stew and wine, you’re most generous.” He eats quietly, focusing on the food while the others talk. As everyone seems to have put in their input but him, Serolt finally pushes the food aside a moment and speaks. He’s very deliberate.

”It’s clear we’ll help you with your bandit problem. There’s certainly no love of this kind of lawlessness within our ranks. But you’re right, we are not soldiers. We have been tasked with investigating this land, and to a lesser degree, trying to tame it. Specifically called out are bandits - so helping you is in our charter most clearly.”

”I just think it’s important that we understand each other. I don’t want there to be any confusion or misunderstanding later. When it comes to banditry, we have the full authority of the Dragonscale Throne at our backs.”

”With that understood, I have the same questions as my friends here; Do you know where they billet? Do you know when they’ll be back? How many are they? Finally, how well equipped are they - for example do they have bows or other ranged weapons?”

Starting with Kryolani, Svetlana tries to answer all of your questions: «We don’t know where they come from…south, most likely. The first time they visited, it was three months ago I believe, there were a dozen of them—10 lower-ranking thugs led by a cloaked man armed with a bow, and a woman who carried two small hatchets. The woman did the majority of the talking on that first trip, and her black sense of humor and the way she smiled when she spoke of what fate would await me if we didn’t comply frightened me all the more. The woman also was particularly sharp and observant, whereas the man was a bit more crude and foolish. She quite nearly lopped off Oleg’s right hand with one of her hatchets in a cruel bit of mockery…she was the most dangerous of the bandits, for sure. She took my wedding ring right off my hand and tossed it to one of her men as payment for “not shortening Oleg’s reach”, or something like that». Oleg grunts to the memory of that experience, but he stays silent, letting Svetlana speak. « On the second and third visit, only the crude hooded man accompanied the bandits. The second visit, he came with only six other men, while on the third he only came with four. We suspect that the bandits have let down their guard and think we are completely cowed. Hopefully, when they visit tomorrow they’ll be even fewer in number, and hopefully the scary woman with the hatchets won’t be with them». Svetlana sighs, pausing for a bit to thank Reknar for his compliments: «I’m happy you’re enjoying your meal, sir. I’ve done my best to greet you appropriately».

Oleg finally chimes in: «Since their first visit, they have returned twice more, each time within an hour of sunrise on the fourth day of the month. We usually have our “taxes” ready andhand them over quickly—the bandits usually seem eager to return to their camp somewhere in the Greenbelt». Svetlana chimes in again at this point: «This led me to think their camp is about a day’s ride away from here, but this is just my own assumption…».

Again, Oleg turns to Roksana and Serolt: «They should be arriving tomorrow, within an our of sunrise». Svetlana smiles and adds: «See, Oleg? This time the luck has smiled upon us. They arrived just in time!». Oleg’s replies to his wife is another grunt, as he ensues: «Speaking of equipment…Yes, they carry bows. And they can also fire them, or so it seems. They also have swords».

---

Even as the conversation ensues, it appears clear to you that the Levetons have told you everything they know about the bandits already. When you’re done eating, Svetlana clears the table and adds: «You are so brave and generous…room and board for today are free for you. Is the least we can do to thank you for helping us». Oleg grunts again, but nods to his wife. «Here, follow me», says the man.

---

He leads you into the building he was busy reparing when you arrived. You see four beds in the room, and a Medium chest at the foot of each bed. «You’ll sleep here. Unfortunately, we don’t have a fifth bed or chest, thus you will have to manage it». Then, without saying anything, he leads you outside again, pointing you to a fenced area with a wooden roof to keep off most of the rain and snow, but the pen is currently empty. Oleg lead you into the westernmost building of the trading post: «This is the stall, and this is Claptrap», he says pointing you to a jittery horse kept in the stable. «I rent out the other stalls. 2 silver pieces per stall per night, water and feed included, along with a complimentare rub down for the horse».

---

Again, Oleg leads you outside of the stable to three composting pits and middens. He looks at you and does not add nothing: his eyes and the middens before you are clear enough.

---

After showing you the trading post, or at least those areas you are allowed to access, Oleg says: «Well, I suppose you will need some time to make a plan for tomorrow. Svetlana will prepare something for you for the dinner. I need to go back to work now», says the gruff man.
______________________________________
Alright guys, I expect you to make a plan for ambush the bandit when they’ll arrive. I would prefer if you decide staying in-character. Also, please try to avoid asking further questions to Oleg and Svetlana during the previous conversation, as it would slow us down a lot, and force me to go back and add a bit here and there, thus depriving the conversation of its realism. If you have other questions for the Levetons, please ask them in your next post but suppose you’re asking them few hours later, maybe at dinner.

To avoid getting stuck on the plan, please try express clearly your proposal or agreement with another plan. I will assume you will follow the most agreed plan among those proposed.

I'll be posting again at 11:00 P.M. GMT+1 (10:00 P.M. for Reknar, 02:00 P.M. for Kryolani and Serolt, 6:00 P.M. for Jacobus and Roksana), to answer to your possible questions and describe the moment in which you go to sleep. This leaves you with 2 post to choice a suitable plan.

Reknar bows at Svetlana and the prospect of room and board 'on the house', and accepts one of the stalls for 'Mule', paying 1 gold piece to Oleg up front - "This covers the next five days, if I am not mistaken. And thank you for offering us a place to sleep the night without even knowing if we are good for our word" - he adds before the man moves away.

---

When the group is alone, he follows through - "Ok, I think I can sleep on the ground, since we won't really be able to fit two of us in one of those beds - I'll just need to find a suitable spot" - and begins looking around for where may be the best place to bunk down for the night.

Trying to make sure Reknar will not wake up all bent out of shape :D

---

"As for tomorrow - I'm seeing Serolt up top as our ranged support" - Reknar begins, using a twig to draw a crude map of the outpost in the ground - "Most likely here, in the southeastern tower, if it affords a line of sight into the yard. We need to check that"

"We could go meet them outside, and risk minimum injury to anyone else inside the outpost, but we will not have as many tactical advantages as we have inside, even more so if we can set up the field to our taste" - he draws a cross approximately in the middle of the outpost - "We should draw them all the way inside - here - before revealing our full force" - then ponders for a second - "We will either need someone they know to be involved, so they will move this far inside the open yard, or else simply pretend the gates are open and everyone is busy, so that they waltz right in. I'd rather the latter than risking the presence of Oleg or Svetlana if all hell breaks loose, though perhaps they can advise us on what option is more likely to succeed"

Pointing to the structure northeast of the center, and the cart just southeast from it, the sergeant continues - "These are two perfect places from where to spring a surprise attack" - then looks around at the group - "I would say Serolt uptop on the perch raining arrows, me, Jacobus and Roksana down below - one behind the cart, one hidden here" - and again points to the structure just northeast of the central area - "And one probably springing from here - this structure directly west of the centre"

Looking at Kryolani he nods - "Would you rather be close or far from the fray? I've seen devastating magic taking effect from both afar, and up close, so you can decide where you would like to stand - with Serolt, attacking from there, or moving along the eastern causeway next to the pallisade to pepper them from there, or maybe atop one of the structures - you let us know where you believe you should be Kryolani"

Again he turns to all of them - "In fact, and obvioulsy, everyone needs to say their piece about placement. In my head, we focus down their leader, or leaders - the bow guy and/or the axe girl with the attitude" - Reknar snarls - "If they are but rabble, losing the boss will make their legs quiver, and some may turn tail or surrender" - stopping short, he ponders for a moment - "All the more reason for me, Roksana and Jacobus to box them in - we cannot let them escape, or they will run directly to warn their scum friends"

Standing up, the man looks at the drawing on the floor - "On top of that, if the bow guy decides to come in tomorrow, having us three waving weapons to his face should make him shake a tad in his boots. If it is the axe woman, then she'll still have to put up with us anyway" - he chuckles -"What say you?"

I assumed from the drawing in Roll20 that the directions are:

..S..

Serolt puts his pack on the floor. "We should get in the habit of keeping watch - even here where it seems safe. So we won't need all the beds anyway. I suggest three watches of 4 hours or so each so we all get enough sleep. I can take a watch alone, as I'll have Regin to keep me company and help me stay alert for danger."

"How do you want to pair off?"

Later, once watch rotations are decided...

"About tomorrow. I like Reknar's plan, it's a good one. I'd like to be a little closer to the action if I can as I'm a more effective archer close up, but I don't want to tip our hand either."

"If there are to be so few, I say we draw them in. Let them come inside like nothing is wrong. Then we confront them. After all, visitors tomorrow might be just that - travelers. We won't know for sure they're bandits until they attack."

"I suggest me and Kryolani stay out of sight while you three confront them. They'll think they have you outnumbered so they won't back down. When any of you give the signal, we'll strike."

"How does that sound?"

Jacobus agreed with the watch proposed, "I can take first watch with Kryolani so we can both rest up later to recoup our magic. Sound good?"

planning
Jacobus grinned, "Let's just wait a minute here."

He paused to make sure he had everyone's attention and continued, "So what about all our talk about giving bandits a second chance and all of that? Right now, all I hear is 'we can't let them get away'. Are we then predisposed to killing them outright? Is telling the bandits that their past behavior will be no longer tolerated out of the picture?"

just stirring the pot a little... :)

earlier in the evening, discussing sleeping assignments

Well, I'd like to go first...or last. First would be good. I need my beauty sleep if my magic is going to be at it's best.

later on, discussing plans...

"I like the Reknar idea. Bring them in tight where hopefully we can keep them from fleeing back and warning their bosses that something is amiss. If we're lucky, maybe they'll assume a bear got them or something. If we're really lucky, we can take prisoners and figure out where they came from. I'd rather not kill them if we can avoid it, but we should also give some thought to preventing them from running home and setting up reprisals for this trading post. These people have to be able to live here after this is over, you know?" Kryolani leans over the crude dirt diagram of the battle plan, "As to where to station me, I can inflict a goodly amount of harm up close, but I can't really fight very well...at all. If I see a good opportunity, with their guys bunched together, I'll run in and unleash some flames, but otherwise I'll stay back with Serolt."

Watch Rotation: 1st) Jacobus/Kryolani; 2nd) Reknar/Roksana; 3rd) Regin/Serolt;

"Jacobus, you are correct about second chances, but we're not limiting that option here. As I said, we confront them. Challenge them to confirm their deeds before we spring our trap."

"And, if they should fall, we aren't saying we won't try to help them when we can."

He looks around the outpost, "I think I want to be up there, on that wall." he points to the southern wall and tower.

"I'll crouch back by the corner when they first arrive, back far enough to be hard to see, but just close enough to see the signal. Then I'll rush to the end of the platform and start shooting."

"That way, if any do escape, I can continue to shoot them from the wall and maybe drop them before they escape too far. Kryolani, you're welcome to join me, but unless they make for the ladder and climb, I should be safe. Maybe you can station yourself on the ground in that corner. If any do rush the ladder, you can peel them off with flame."

OH! I forgot to do it earlier, but Serolt also pays 1gp to Oleg for stabling Mitzy for a few days.

The man of Abadar nodded, "Good then. We talk first and if they don't want to comply then we get rough on them."

He dusted off his armor, "If that's the case, then I see no reason to endanger Oleg or his wife. We'll leave the door ajar to let the 'bandits' come in and state their business. I'll wait by the tables and tell them their behavior will no longer be tolerated and see what they say."

Jacobus was restless. His second day here, not even in the Stolen Lands, and he was already being asked to be perhaps be judge and... executioner?. He clasped his golden key, May some of your judgement be passed on to me so I can make the right choice tomorrow.

Roksana feels almost as if she should salute Reknar as he crafts a plan of attack for the bandits arrival. She listens carefully as each companion weighs in and pictures the battle in her head based in their information.

"I'm not going to play nice during actual combat, that's how you die, but preventing escape and taking captives when it's all over with sounds good to me. Though we should make sure Oleg and his wife are okay with feeding a few free loading mouths if that's the case."

She moves closer in to the map and studies it as best she can.

"I'll hide behind the cart. An armored half orc is never always a sign of combat, the minute they see me they'll know somethings up, but if all they catch are my arms or my face they'll likely think I'm just labor."

After having spent some time discussing the plan for the next day, you take some time to relax after the long and tiring travel. Svetlana gives you clean clothes and fills a wooden basin with warm water to allow you to wash yourself. When the sun goes down, you join the Levetons on one of the tables outside. Svetlana has prepared a warm bowl of bigos accompanied by a dish of brindza. As dessert, Svetlana has cooked a babka. After consuming this abundant dinner, the Levetons ask you about your plan for the next day and quickly suggest not to involve them. They will stay in their quarters, praying for your success.

---

After enjoying a bit of talk among yourselves, you are finally ready to sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a though day.

I need you to place your tokens on Roll20 where you would like them to be when the bandits will arrive. Oleg will awake you in time to prepare yourselves before the bandits arrive at the trading post. Feel free to chat a bit among yourselves in your next post or to further discuss the plan if you wish so.

I'll be posting again at 08:00 A.M. GMT+1 (07:00 A.M. for Reknar, 11:00 P.M. for Kryolani and Serolt, 02:00 A.M. for Jacobus and Roksana).

A real babka!, Serolt can't believe his luck as he tucks in to the sweet treat.

He wholeheartedly agrees to Leveton's plans of waiting out the entire encounter, "No need for you to be involved at all. Just lay low and let us handle it."

- - -

Serolt sleeps quickly and soundly and is only a little annoyed when awakened for his watch rotation.

He serves willingly, happy to repay others for his sound trusted sleep. He wakes everyone early though, a little too eager to prepare for the day ahead. He wolfs his breakfast and gets into position early on the wall, leaving Regin safely locked in the barracks so he doesn't tip our hand.

He leans back against the rough wood of the palisade and tries to relax with his bow in his hand. I really need a better bow. This thing has no pull whatever!

Stealth, take 10: 10 + 8 = 18

My token is on the map and ready to go.

as I will be ducking down below the edge of the palisade, I think I have to trust to whatever bonus total cover would give my stealth check to remain hidden. here goes nothing.

Kryolani ducks down next to Serolt, couching as low as he comfortably can while staying on his feet. He doesn't have a clear view of the courtyard, but the noise of confrontation should be plenty enough notice. He nervously loosens his sword in it's scabbard, knowing it would be little use in his hands were things to go that far wrong.

--Regarding watches--

"I'm fine with whatever guys - I can probably use Roksana's eyes in the dark if something comes up, so that works for me" - the man nods at the half-orc.

---Regarding Plans---

Serolt wrote:

"That" - Reknar agrees with Serolt's reasoning - "Maybe my language was a bit coarse" - he smiles - "It increases the risk tenfold, so we need to be at the ready to jump in the fray if they even go for their weapons, but I think we can give them one chance"

Jacobus Varadin wrote:

"Now that... Are you sure you want to expose yourself like that? Before me and Roksana get a chance to jump in, you may be heading for some hurt" - he ponders - "And in all honesty, I think if they see you all alone without any backup I seriously doubt they will comply" - the man shrugs - "But it is up to you, just take no chances"

Kryolani wrote:

"Very well then - I have fought alongside wizards and other arcane masters before, so let me know if you need to gain a safe position close to them" - Reknar informs his companion, as he draws the longspear - "This right here will keep them at bay, and away from you as you cast. If you stay say... A step back and to the left or to the right, I'll give them a hard time if they try to reach you. I'll be ready if you need. Just let me know"

"Agreed. I don't think there will be much niceties flying around" - Reknar again looks at Jacobus - "My first impulse would be just to skewer them, but we have agreed on second chances..."

"Solid thinking Roksana" - he finishes as they head to dinner.

"I must say I was not expecting this at all" - the man speaks openly with Oleg and Svetlana at the table - "I've traveled quite a lot in recent years, and such hospitality to strangers is not common - I will not thank you again, as too much is just too much, but I will make sure to repay you for this, one way or another"

---On watch---

Reknar keeps his watch mostly in silence, exchanging nods with Roksana every once in a while when they change positioning. At a certain point, he comes sit down next to her - "So, any thoughts for tomorrow?" - he questions flatly.

---In the morrow---

"You guys keep an eye out, and let us know when they are coming, ok?" - he requests as Serolt and Kryolani move on up top, then goes to his position, leaning against the wall, absently munching on a weed, and waiting for the 'heads up'
