GM Giuseppe |
Hey guys, welcome to our Discussion Thread. It's good to finally get started!
First off, I would like to discuss whether you would prefer to begin playing tomorrow already or you'd rather take some time to work on your PCs while the Christmas holidays pass. I'm personally leaning towards the latter option, since I wouldn't like to lose momentum. We could get started on January the 2nd in this case.
Also, I've got some suggestions to further involve your characters in my game and will post later today or tomorrow in this thread detailing what my thoughts on this matter are.
If you need to start to make plans together, decide leadership roles for the future, get build tips and so on, this is the right place and time to do it.
Happy gaming everyone!
Kryolani |
I'd agree with starting after the holidays, personally. For those of us with a lot of family activities forthcoming, it'd probably be best to avoid a distracted start.
Looking forward to hearing the suggestions.
Reknar |
Hello everyone.
I agree with Kryolani - this next week and a half are gonna be hectic with Christmas and New Year's Eve commemorations, so our best option would be to start after the holidays.
I'll wait for everyone to stop by and dot the Discussion, but obviously I've got some ideas/wishes in mind as to where Reknar would be heading at this new stage in his life - I'm hoping he will become a 'better man' - less callous and pragmatic, and perhaps more trusting in human nature, though it is not guaranteed.
As for build tips, yeah... Core isn't the most forgiving of sources for where his crunch is heading - mainly because there is no way to deal with multiclass FCB (unless half-elf, which would not be terrible for him when looking at the background), and even worse, when prestige classes are thrown into the mix :/
I am also very curious at the suggestions you may have in mind, tying into the game.
Jacobus Varadin |
Glad to be here.
I'm OK with starting anytime. I'm actually off work starting today and won't be traveling so I should have more time than usual.
But I understand if we want to wait.
I need to also take a look at your backgrounds and other fluff.
Will the recruitment scene be part of the game?
Giuseppe: please open up the gameplay thread so we can 'dot in and delete' the post so that this campaign shows up in our personal page and we won't have to open up another page to check what's going on. Thanks.

Ahhh, the joys of a primary caster class. No interest in multi-classing, no interest in prestige classes. Not unless someone brings up a really interesting idea for them.

Gameplay Thread is up. Please dot and delete to avoid filling the Gameplay Thread with useless dots :)
Roksana 'Rok' Jedynak |
Thank you for the selection, excited to be playing with you all!
I am officially off from work until late January, so it doesn't matter to me when we start, but I don't mind waiting until after the holidays since it tends to be a pretty hectic time for most people.
GM Giuseppe |
Just remembered something else about spells - will those be allowed only from the same sources as the character builds?
Yes.
Kryolani |
Right, so, Serolt, Rok, and Jacobus are fine with starting now.
I started off leaning towards waiting, but by golly I want to game, so I'm fine either way (though I gotta be honest, on Christmas Day proper, I'll likely be distracted and only be able to post once or twice).
Reknar, you'd prefer to wait, yes?
Roles: What do Jacobus and Serolt want to be? So far only Reknar has selected Ruler, and I know according to the kingdom rules on the SRD we're supposed to have one of those eventually. I'd also be ok playing a Ruler if we decided it (apparently a high charisma is important? Apparently I'd be a moderately terrible spymaster, as it requires Int, so I'd like to remove that from my list of preferred positions), or maybe someone else wants it, but I figure we should probably decide that first.
Builds: Turns out, Sorcerers are fragile! But the rest of you seem pretty handy in a fight. We've got bard and inquisitor healing. I think we'll be fine. Any advice anyone would like to give, I'm all ears (I'm a long-time pathfinder player, but all about learning from good advice).
Thoughts?
Jacobus Varadin |
Jacobus would make a pretty decent councilor or treasurer.
That being said, there's something about trying to fill a role that you are not a natural for (i.e., ruler with 'low charisma') as it presents tons of RP opportunities. Therefore, I would not pigeon hole anyone into a role just yet. Let's see how the game and characters develop and who knows, we may have Serolt be the ruler.
I think we'll be Ok for healing, fighting, etc. The group is pretty diverse and should be OK facing just about any challenge - at least on paper :).
How about device finding/disabling (locked doors, traps, etc.)?
Kryolani |
oi, mixed up Reknar and Serolt, both sounded like they wanted to wait.

Agreed, and I'm down for that. For the record, while he might be good at it, Kryolani absolutely doesn't WANT to be a ruler. He WANTS to be idly rich, attend parties, and maybe occasionally learn fun new magic tricks.
How about device finding/disabling (locked doors, traps, etc.)?
Yeah, not me. I would be the absolute worst at this. I could pick up spells that might eventually help though. Knock and the like.
Roksana 'Rok' Jedynak |
How about device finding/disabling (locked doors, traps, etc.)?
I'm pretty sure that's what my Warhammer is for. Roksana is good at disabling all sorts of things living or otherwise!
:)
Reknar |
Well, of course I would like to see Reknar getting to ruler - it would be the most amazing thing to accomplish on this character, and the way I thought about him.
But I am completely on board with Jacobus here - let's see how the game and characters grow, and take it from there.
As far as I'm concerned, we can start right away. I'm just not sure I will be able to commit as much as I would like during this and the next week with all the upcoming festivities.
As for scouting and trapspotting, I do think we may have a problem there :D
Mechanics and build wise, I'm kinda concerned with all the decisions I need to make right away for my character - planning on going Battle Herald means multiclassing. And multiclassing means deciding how many levels on each class, FCB placement, etc. etc. I get the feeling a bad decision can be hard to revert, though nothing dramatic I admit.
GM Giuseppe |
It just requires some pre-planning on your part Reknar. I don't like optimized characters in AP, simply because enemies are not optimized as well. So think twice before according priority to your build over roleplay. This I would also like to tell Kryolani: one of the things that had seriously tempted me not to recruit an otherwise excellent character was is Cha 20.
Oh, and Fabian: recruitment thread roleplay is going to be considered actual gameplay.
GM Giuseppe |
What I'm trying to say here is that even though I think that characters NEEDS to be effective, an excess of optimization could lead me to read that choice as 'disruptive', with all the related consequences. There's a big difference between effectiveness and actual optimization: the latter often involves some degree of roleplay sacrifice and I tend not to like when roleplay is put second place. It has to be our first concern if we want to have fun, but I'm sure that experienced roleplayers as you are already know this all. Just remarking ehat's obviois here, but it's always better to clarify these matters before any misunderstanding could arise.
GM Giuseppe |
Also, I wouldn't like to start the game before everyone is ready to fully commit to it. Maybe we can start some RP scenes during your travel towards Oleg's Trading Post, but nothing more than that for now, even if I, from a personal point of view, would have no difficulty in fully committing to the game even in this holiday period.
Also consider that I'll be going to ask you to make some additional readings before we get started and you will also need to work on further refining your character before the adventure starts, so after all maybe these holidays will just come in handy.
Kryolani |
I was honestly kind of questioning the 20 charisma myself (I could REALLY use a few points in Dex or Con for some survivability) but I wanted to play a guy who's physically a bit of a wimp. No training in how to fight whatsoever, desk job all his life, sword he's never used beyond swinging it a few times to see how heavy it was. I felt completely lackluster physical stats would be the best way to convey that.
I also need to nail down precisely what equipment he has brought along. Not having any really good concept of what the wilds are like, I figure all he has is food, a change of clothes, and a spare knife. He's got plenty of writing materials though, and that's the important part!
Roksana 'Rok' Jedynak |
Well, I'll definitely have time for further reading and refining over the next few weeks so I'm interested to see what you've got for us.
Kryolani |
As far as build questions go, I have two.
1. Are we using the APG Racial Favored Class Benefits?
2. What are your feelings on the Leadership feat, down the road when we have a town that might need leading? A cohort to watch the town when we're off adventuring, and to take a position in town leadership that none of the rest of us want, could be useful. On the other hand, the feat can be absolutely cheese-tastic, when abused, so I know many DMs who ban it outright, which is also fine.
Serolt |
Kryolani - I'd definitely back off the 20cha. We, as a team, can use it later when we start building our empire, but it's not that big a deal, and there are only 5 of us, so we can't circle you all the time. :)
As for stealthiness and trapiness, we're just out of luck. :) Serolt can stealth a bit (though Regin follows him everywhere and Regin won't be exceptional at stealth). We're just going to have to break things open if they're closed to us.
I think we'll do very well indeed. Very well.
Treasure sheet, coming up!
I've finished my purchases at last. I think Serolt is completely ready to go.
Kryolani |
Kryolani - I'd definitely back off the 20cha....
Well, if we're allowed to tweak our existing builds, sure. I'm happy to do this. Giuseppe, can I get confirmation?
GM Giuseppe |
Yes you can modify everything in your characyer sheet before we start off, as long as you inform me about the changes you've made :)
GM Giuseppe |
Alright guys, I've made my first actual post in the Gameplay Thread. Please read it carefully as soon as you have enough time, and enjoy this roleplaying prequel conceived to allow you get a taste of roleplay before Christmast holidays will pass.
GM Giuseppe |
Also, as you can see, I've added to the campaign's info tab a link to both our Kingdom Building and Treasure spreadsheets. A HUGE thank you to Euan for sharing it with us! Well done man!
Kryolani |
in that case, with approval, I'd like to change my ability scores from
str 8
dex 10
con 10
int 13
wis 12
cha 20
to
str 9
dex 12
con 12
int 14
wis 12
cha 18
The extra skill point from the increased intelligence, I'd like to use to buy Knowledge Arcana, and the point from Favored Class: Sorcerer I'd like to use to buy a point of spellcraft.

A settlement’s lore modifier applies on Diplomacy checks made to gather information.
Restov has a +4 Lore modifier, thus granting you a +4 bonus on your Diplomacy checks to gather information about Oleg's Trading Post.
GM Giuseppe |
Hey everyone I was wondering what would be an appropriate date for us to actually start the game? In other words, can you tell me when would you be able to post 2-3 times/day again?
Roksana 'Rok' Jedynak |
I'm ready.
Kryolani |
hot diggity! Let's do this thing!
(edit: Immediately. I can post 2-3 times a day starting today)
GM Giuseppe |
Alright, so let's go guys! I'll post soon :D
Only one thing: did you buy the mule or not?
Kryolani |
I'd vote yes. Because I am a weakling of frail constitution, and also am not a fan of heavy lifting. We need the mule to cart back bags and bags of platinum pieces, right?!?
