Though he was in pursuit of the halfling, Radim was not the type to sprint carelessly. His approach was a cautious one, and he peeked around the doorway to see...

...He had no idea what it was he was facing. He was not sure he wanted to get involved with the fiery silhouette that plagued the halfling. Slowly he tried to lurk away, but Baris caught him. Radim froze for a second, slinking into the door frame. Radim stared at him blankly, his mouth set in a thin frown. "I..." A pause as he furrows his brow, trying to think of what to say. Reaching out to actually help people, to get involved in their lives... that was not the way of things in Ustalav. He did not know what exactly to say. "What do they say?"

Stake Out:
You arrive at the memorial shortly after the sun dips below the horizon. You decide it's best to keep quiet as you do not want to disturb anyone coming your way.

Several hours pass with no activity. Just when you're starting to think that you are out of luck for the night, you hear some labored footsteps. You can make out the silhouette of a figure making its way in the direction of the shrine. Then suddenly, without warning, it changes course.

Tev and Alyssa - You can make out a man that you recognize from your first day there that Alyssa identified as Gibs Hephenus, the leader of the mob that interfered with the funeral. He's carrying what appears to be a waterskin in one hand and a razor in the other. Before he moves off of his present course he takes a quick look in your direction.

I would have given that in a spoiler because you can only see it due to your low-light vision. However, I don't think Tuoni's looking right now. If you do happen to look, Tuoni, pretend you didn't see it ;)

Tev stays still unless it looks like Gibs sees them. Then, all he does is a small, nonthreatening wave.

Alyssa passed the hours in silence as the three of them waited in the darkness. When the figure appeared and made its erratic journey toward them she carefully ensured that her hands were not tangled in the folds of her cloak so that she could raise them and cast a spell if need be. After a few tense moments she saw Tev wave to the figure. She remained firmly in place, trying to stay as still as the statue they were guarding.


Stake Out:
Gibs gives no response to your wave but continues on his path.

Quietly, once Gibs had turned away from them, Tev whispered to the others, "I saw that one lurking around the streets on the night we first got here. I don't know what he's about. Think one of us should follow him?"

Radim... Was at a loss on how to reply to such a confession. Quickly, he gave Janasen a pleading look, as if the other man could produce an answer (or better yet, intervine). When no answer came, Radim turned back to Baris. "When did these voices start?"

"The voices only started recently. I think I was hearing screams, shrieks and mumbling before the professor's funeral it was very sporadic. I now know that they were likely those things, rather than just my mind playing tricks on me, or it is still playing tricks on me. The voices though only since the funeral, though whispers and just a few words. I know the words now, it seems like I could not understand them before." Baris speaks in a strange language full of harsh angry sounds which neither of you know. Baris looks at you expectantly then drops his head in resignation, he also hugs himself and goes to sit in the corner. As he walks away he says, "Just leave me, I need some time, go on the stakeout, I will make sure Kendra is fine."

Radim could only furrow his brow at the explanation. Despite the time spent at Havenguard and the number of times he had been asked questions along similar lines, he was not quite sure with what to do once he had the information.

But... This was Ustalav, and Ustalav was a cursed place. Even the smallest of children knew it. He was not entirely sure, but perhaps the voices had something to do with Harrowstone. He could not place the blame entirely upon it if Baris had been hearing voices before, but... It was certainly too convenient to ignore.

"Not enough answers," Radim mumbled to himself. There never was. But something told him that Harrowstone should be investigated sooner rather than later. He could only hope that Tuoni could survive if it was a trap sprung by the elf and the tiefling....

Alyssa gave a single nod at Tev's suggestion and then, moving as silently as only a Tiefling can, glided through the shadows after Gibs. She was careful to keep a good distance from him, hopeful that his human eyes wouldn't see her in the dark.

I'm afraid I forgot whether or not you roll the stealth check or I do, Fyrian, and what if any variables I would need to take into account since it's nighttime.

"Friend, you call me friend though I don't feel it, I can see that you are concerned, though it hurts me that not one of the other three came after me. I know that can be conceded, but I thought we had... well..." Baris begins to sob, sitting down in the corner, hugging himself because no one else will, no one will ever be loving to me, now that the professor is dead.

I rolled the initial stealth checks and perception checks on both sides. Roll them if you feel like you need to, that can never hurt. I still might roll them periodically depending on how this goes.

Gibs seems to pay no attention to you as you follow him. You're not sure of the direction he's going since you're still relatively new to the town. Gib's pace seems odd, however. Not too fast, not too slow, but a bit clunky.

Hall Group:

You all notice Kendra standing off a bit in the hall, tears in her eyes with a hand over her mouth, covering a bit of a smile. "This may be the sweetest thing I've ever seen." Walking over to Baris, she leans down, "Is there anything that you need, dear? Perhaps you have a favorite meal or something that I can prepare?" As she says this she reaches out and strokes Baris's head while he is in the embrace of Janasen.

When Baris burst into tears, Radim instinctively scuttled back a few paces. Luckily for him, both Janasen and Kendra were there to console the halfling. Good. Radim would have found it difficult to have even attempted an awkward shoulder pat.

His expression darkened slightly at Janasen's words of comfort. "Provided they don't kill us first..." he muttered, though it was loud enough for the others to hear.

Alyssa quirked an eyebrow and cautiously came closer behind the man. Something wasn't right, but she didn't want to frighten him. She had not perceived any infirmity in him at the funeral, but then again if she brought his attention on her she could jeopardize the stake out...

It couldn't be helped. She hoped that the others may still catch the culprit since they stayed with the statue. After following Gibs a ways farther, Alyssa softly spoke.

"Excuse me sir, are you alright?"

Alyssa:
No sooner were the words out of your mouth than Gibs whirled around, a crazed look in his eyes. With his razor held high he shouts "You shall not prevent our escape! The woman will die again!" He then runs at you, wildly swinging his razor. One of the swings connects, drawing blood.
You take 3 damage. How far would you say you are from the rest of the group?

Oh shoot, uh, with the amount of turns taken into account for travel and within reason for Alyssa to perceive that something is wrong and make a decision about it, I'd say... Something between 60 and 80 feet away from the group.

Alyssa was shocked when Gibs turned on her and attacked, and she had reflexively raised her hand to shield herself. She gripped her left hand into a fist to try and stop the blood from the cut across the side of her wrist even as she raised her other hand in what would appear to Gibs to be a non threatening gesture of being unarmed but in actuality was meant to prepare to cast a spell.

detect magic on Gibs to see if I can detect if he's being controlled.

She tried to reason with him. "I don't want to hurt you, Gibs." she raised her voice in a commanding tone, both in the hopes of snapping him out of it as well as maybe alerting her friends to the situation. "Of whose escape do you speak, and what woman?"

After a while, probably about 15 minutes, Baris is feeling better. He flashes his classic smile and says, "Thank you Janasen, Kendra. Actually I would like it if you could meet my master. He might know more about what is going on or what to do about me, or not. He has always taught me emotions get in the way."

Janasen releases Baris returning his smile "Sounds like a good idea. We should talk about this more with a bit of food and drink." turning to Kendra with his winning smile "If you don't mind of course.

Alyssa:

Gibs ignores your comment, swinging his razor at you again and connecting, not quite as hard but enough to draw blood. You do detect that he is being controlled, but by what you don't know.
You take another 2 damage. I'm also letting the other guys know that they heard Gibs scream. Since it happened one turn ago and I'll go with 60ft away, I'll allow them one turn to get here. That will be this turn, so Gibs won't attack you again until they show up.

Stake Out:

You hear a scream from the direction that Alyssa went following Gibs.
You are approximately one turn away, and even with your night vision you can't exactly see them, there are some trees blocking the way and such.

Group at home:

Kendra smiles a big smile at Janasen. "Well of course, I'll get on it right away." With a flash Kendra is in the kitchen, making some delicious food.

Tev heard the scream coming from Alyssa's direction and immediately bolted after it, drawing his club and arriving on the scene in time to see the man Gibs swipe and draw Alyssa's blood with his razor. "Leave her alone, you crazy fool! She's not here to harm you!"

Does Tev arrive in time to do something else after seeing this (specifically cast a spell), or is that his action until after Gibs' next attack?

Stake out:
Alyssa reeled back from Gibs and his knife and saw a flash of light in her right eye followed by the warmth of blood down her cheek. His strike had caught her just on the eyebrow ridge and had she not titled her head at the last minute would have done some serious damage to her eye. As it was the blade had scraped against the bone and it hurt immensely and now limited her vision in that eye. Even so she could see the craze in his eyes even as she backed away to a safe distance from him.

"Don't kill him. He's being controlled by something." Alyssa said as she raised her hand and cast mage hand on a nearby stone. It steadily rose into the air behind her assailant with the intentions of causing unfatal but sufficient damage to bring him down without killing him.

"I need your color spray, Tev." she said as she gave a shake of her head to try and dispel the fuzziness starting to build there. Her arm felt cold and she knew she as beginning to lose a dangerous amount of blood. If Gibs wasn't stopped soon and attacked her again she would run the risk of blacking out.

That is fine Fyrian. Baris will hear none of it, he will help Kendra, he enjoys cooking and it helps keeps his mind off his woes. At least until someone starts making him drink. Then merryment is had! Singing, dancing, and consuming of good food and drink!

We have roasted chicken, garlic bread, mead, milk, boiled eggs, steamed broccoli and carrots.

Sorry for the late response. Since you are arriving roughly at the same time that their second round was happening I'll allow for an action, sort of a personal surprise round. Gibs would be focused on Alyssa anyhow. I was planning on rolling initiative once you and Tuoni arrived. Not that this is going to last very long... Also, forgive me for asking, but I know you're going to cast Color Spray. What's the DC on that save? If it goes beyond this we'll start initiative. Here's what it will be after Tev takes a turn:

Tev's Color Spray DC is 14, so Gibs actually has about 2 in 5 chance of making that unless he has a Will penalty.

Gibs made it clear that he wasn't about to listen. The way he had been acting made Tev lean toward agreeing with Alyssa that he must be under someone or something else's control. Tev hoped that control wouldn't render Gibs immune to the one good spell Tev had for this situation.

Positioning himself so the Color Spray would hit Gibs but not Alyssa, Tev uttered the magic words and flung his arm in the direction. "Zazz blammymatazz!"

Kendra either doesn’t hear what Radim said or is pretending not to hear, you can’t tell which one. She continues to make the meal that Baris described while you all are having your powwow.

Radim's eyes narrowed. "Isn't it obvious?" He paused when Baris came in. He tried to smile and nod at the cheerful halfling, though he only succeeded at the latter. When Baris had vanished back into the kitchen, Radim continued in a low voice.

"I know they're up to something... Think about it. The elf is constantly running off. He never listens to anything anyone says and loses his temper without any provication. He and the tiefling are always talking in their own language in front of us: why? What are they hiding? What are they saying that they can't trust us to overhear? And when the elf made that remark about bashing Baris' head in a few minutes ago... I-I think they might be trying to kill us all."

Alyssa's eyes widened and despair gripped her when she saw that the color spray had no effect on Gibs. She desperately wanted to avoid having to kill the man but now it looked like it was going to happen and, as the voices were telling her over and over, it was all her fault.

She quickly backed away from Gibs until she had put Tuoni between herself and the crazed lunatic.

Her hand, which she kept raised in order to sustain the Mage Hand spell, she brought down quickly. The rock followed her orders, falling in a similar fashion and aimed for the back of Gibs' head. Alyssa fervently prayed that it would only knock him unconscious rather than kill him.

If Gibs gave him an opening, he too was going to try to knock the man out rather than kill him.

If Tev gets an AoO on Gibs he will take the -4 to try to make the damage be nonlethal.

Janasen looks at Radim with a surprised expression "Tev is definitely up to something but I think that has more to do with Alyssa than any one of us. As far as going off on his own and losing his temper not sure if the poor guy is having any luck." After that last part Janasen seems to think a bit, then continues "Not sure about the last thing, however if it makes you feel better keep watch on his actions see for yourself if you are right. Just do me one favor? Don't forget that you have people to watch your back now." The rock that Alyssa threw narrowly misses Gibs. Seeing that she needs to get away from him Alyssa glides past Gibs without giving him a chance to slice at her. Seemingly focused on Alyssa, Gibs goes for the one in between him and her, Tuoni. He swings the razor and it glances off of the armor that Tuoni refused to take off since his last scuffle.

Tuoni seeing no other way swings his longsword at Gibs, hoping to take him out. He lands a solid hit and draws blood from Gibs for the first time.

Although he was relieved that Alyssa got clear of Gibs's blade, Tev winced when he saw Tuoni use the blade of his longsword to take a chunk out of the man. Innocent though the executors were, the hard part would be convincing the townsfolk of that. Tev was still set on doing this despite Tuoni's escalation and Gibs's stubborn refusal to go down so far. He took a step out of Gibs's reach and cast Color Spray again.

Tev moves one square to the right (5-foot step) and casts again, angled upper-left so it should hit Gibs but not Tuoni.

And Gibs takes the full hit of the spell, and he hits the ground, unconscious.

It took a few tense moments for Alyssa to act after Gibs hit the floor. She'd thought for sure that she and both her friends would die tonight at the hands of this crazed wacko and with shaking hands she pulled her rope from her pack and began to not so gently hogtie Gibs.

As she worked her mind was in a roiling turmoil of criticisms and vicious words, everything from "you could've gotten us all killed" to "you're such a weakling" and even "well so much for your plan of escaping, now you'll have to stay".

It wasn't until Gibs was fully secured that she realized she'd been repeatedly Whispering "Nobody died." and if the hot trails down her cheeks were any indication, her mask had cracked and she'd manifested an outward physical sign to how distraught she felt.

Heaving a sigh of relief that the second time was the charm, Tev was also glad that Alyssa happened to have a rope on her, so as to ensure Gibs wouldn't be a problem until they could get him into custody. He did what he could to help her tie him up, and he was not much gentler to the man than she was. But in the meantime he had to ask her, "Are you okay? Are you feeling faint?" Because there was also the problem of seeing to Alyssa's wounds, and the only person he knew who could do that was Radim. Tev knew he probably couldn't solicit the timid priest's assistance, but maybe Tuoni could.

"Let's get him to the sheriff," said Tev. He looked first at Alyssa, "The Lorrimor House is on the way there, so Radim can heal your wounds, though it may take you," he turned his gaze to Tuoni, "to convince him to do it, since he doesn't seem to care much for her or me. We may also want to take the others with us to the jail, since the sheriff already met them and they can help corroborate our story."

Unfortunately, this meant that the stakeout had to be abandoned for now. If Gibs wasn't the vandal, Tev hoped they would be able to get back to the statue before whoever it was did show up.

Alyssa shook her head and lied even as the world continued to spin after the motion had ceased. "No, I'm alright. I can make it until we get to the others and then get him to the jail." she was thankful that her footing was firm when she stood back up after the job was done.

When Gibs fell you noticed his hand still held firm to the waterskin that he was carrying, something he never let go of during the entire fight.

Tuoni nods in agreement to talking to Radim. "I'll convince the cleric. Even if he does not like you he should not deny you treatment." Tuoni looks down and grabs the waterskin from Gibs hand. Tilting it slightly you see a dark, red syrupy fluid pouring out. "Blood!" Tuoni exclaims. "This waterskin is full of blood!". He holds it out so the both of you could examine it as well.

With the blood in the waterskin, it looked like Gibs was their prime suspect for the vandalism after all, but this was still not conclusive proof. Knowing the man would come to in a matter of moments, Tev moved to gag him so he could not make noise and wake anyone else up. Remembering that Alyssa had said he was being controlled, Tev focused his own magic-detection powers and tried to see if he could figure out how:

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

Thinking about the blood, he continued, "This may help us get to the bottom of this, but it doesn't help us prove our case to the sheriff," Tev frowned as he pondered the situation. "If he's still under their control when he comes to, it should be obvious enough, but if he snaps out of it, they're just going to ask us what why we did this to him. It's definitely going to take Janasen's smooth talking to help ensure that we don't become the suspects ourselves." Glancing down at the inert human, he sighed and got in position to help lift the body off the ground. "We'd better get moving."

I know we have the map that says where Gibs' house is, but would our characters know that that's where he lives?


Stake Out:

Technically they would not. It's a DC 25 survival check to follow his footprints which would eventually lead you to his house, but not directly, or Kendra can tell you where he lives. The Sheriff would also know.

Tev:

You reach out with your senses and you feel a very strong compulsion enchantment on Gibs, altering his mind and his will. This would have to be a very powerful entity to be able to control Gibs night after night. You can't yet sense the source, but you have a feeling that Harrowstone is a part of this.
