Charlie joins the group and shrugs at Darvik's inquiry Didn't hear nuthin'. Seems all quiet at both doors. Thought I heard someone chuckling but I coulda sworn it was in me head when I was back there and not in the room - pointing at the east door - I even tried peeking in between and under the doors. Didn't see no shadows from them torches.

Darvik will arm himself with the crossbow again, even though he really doesn't like it all that much. He will step back and allow the fighter types of the group take the lead. Alright, if there's someone in there let's see if we can't take the guy out a bit quickler than the last two.

As the others talk, Jasper quickly strips one of the guards, pulling the leather armour on over his stolen clothes. He stretches his limbs, seeing the armour fit his tall frame well enough, and spins the club in his hand. "If we are done wasting our time, let us continue. It would be prudent to leave as few potential witnesses as possible."

Being a Magus I'm not sure I'm frontline material but I can if you think we'd be better off that way. A longsword isn't a light weapon so I do not get my Weapon Finesse bonus, I may stick to the club, plus I have my arcane mark on it. If Gregor can take advantage of the longsword I'll happily give it up.

With the group all gathered near the east door, Gregor slowly eases it open, his weapon ready in case of any sign of trouble. The door opens soundlessly into the room as the sheriff and the soldier quickly dart in to clear it for the rest of the group.

Unfortunately - or fortunately, depending on one's point of view, the dimly lit room appears to be empty at the moment.

The room is some sort of gathering place as there are wooden benches and tables all over the place that appears to be well used. On the east wall hangs a big banner going from the floor to the ceiling depicting the emblem of Branderscar Prison - a sword in a clenched fist with Mitra's sun rising behind it and the words "Punishment for the Unworthy - The Fruit of Mitra's Justice" in fancy script under it. Besides the door everyone entered through, there are two other doors in the room - one to the north, the other to the south.

Charlie glowers at the magus I ain't yer b!tch to do as ya command, ya pointy-eared tree-loving sissy boy. He kicks Darvik's shin as he walks past him - use yer bleedin' manners next time and ask nice! There's a reminder for ya hey he DID tell me to DMPC him... hehe

He spends a few minutes by the north door listening and trying to peer under the door and between cracks. Finally satisfied, he sullenly walks back to the group avoiding Darvik. There's turnkeys in there - heard 'em talking quiet-like and some snoring and shuffling. No idea how many - somewhere between four and fourteen... I think...

Morlos smirks, stroking his chin. "If we'd like, I can boobie-trap the ground on our side of the door. That way, when we open the door, we wait for them to come through and the first through is probably either dead before he gets to us or a good way there. Makes a very effective bottle neck against them."

The tiefling seems to very much enjoy the idea.

If people seem to like the idea, then Morlos will wait for the door to be opened and then set up an appropriately placed blast rune when the enemy gets close enough.

"No chance of you narrowing it down, then?" Jasper rolls his eyes at the halfling. "Well, I have but one spell left, and..." He pauses, thinking for a moment. "Four more summons. Of course, I can't cast anything without my component pouch." He sighs in frustration. "Which only really leaves me with more eagles. Or ponies, or dogs, or maybe a snake if it would be useful. But I can't see that happening."

Ow! Darvik glares at Charlie and then stifles a laugh. Easily flustered, that one. Hope he doesn't let us down at a key moment. If he wants to act tough to feel better about himself, let him, as long as he does the job.

Sounds like a plan to me. I can hit them with a few bolts from the crossbow as they come out also.

I'm assuming Charlie meant the south door since he's already listened and tried to see what he could through the north door...

Five more minutes pass as the group huddles together in the dining area trying to come up with a plan while Charlie stumps off towards the southern door.

Charlie:
As you lean in at the south door, you hear the occasional movement - nowhere near as much as the north door though. There's a brief muffled mutter and the clink of what sounds like a cup or soup bowl.

The time is 11:35 pm.

Gap under this door is about three quarters of an inch - enough so you can detect shadows moving but not enough to actually see through and observe the activity on the other side with any detail.

we hit both doors at the same time. Because combat is likely to draw them in anyway, so lets do it by our choosing not by theirs. Here;s the plan. Morlos, lets hold off your blast rune til we really need it. Jasper you summon something to help in the break room. Avignen and I go open the room we know has guards in it, thats the North Door. Darvik, when we open the door you shoot the crossbow past us into the room. we will stand to the side to allow a clear shot before we go in. Then Darvik you back up Charlie and Jaspers creature in the break room. Morlos back Avignen and I up.

Just so! Gregor moves to the door and gets ready to open it and move to the side so Darvik has a clean shot and nods for Charlie to move to the other door.

Then Put Morlos into the room one sqaure closer to the center next to where Gregor will move to or where Avignen is standing. Theres a square between Tables That darvik can stand in where he oculd have a clear shot into the room. Put Charlie at the far door with Jasper next to him. sound ok to everyone?

Combat Map Surprise Round and Round 1

11:35 pm

The minor argument between Charlie and Gregor apparently settled, the sheriff moves to one side of the north door and checks to ensure the other five prisoners are ready. He counts down on his fingers and flings the door open and sidestepping to give the others free access to charge in to face whoever might be in the room.

The door slams open to reveal the interior of what looks to be a sleeping/resting area for the guards not on duty. Single cots line the room making for sparse but sufficient sleeping accommodations. There are also several footlockers by some of the cots. The room smells of stale sweat and cheap ale.

The group sees two guards, unarmed and unarmored, on the cots (the guards in yellow and green - we'll call them Yang and Garret to match their colours). In addition, to the back of the room are two other guards, very much awake and very much surprised by the sudden intrusion. It appears the group interrupted them as they were getting ready to go on patrol or go on duty. The two (we'll call them Barros and Pelar to coincide with their colours - blue and pink) are wearing their leather armor and appear to be armed or have their weapons (longswords and leather clubs with a couple of crossbows) within easy reach.

Guard Stats:

Yang and Garret's AC will be 15 as of Rnd 2 as they are unarmored.

Initiative Rolls:

Avingen, Charlie, Darvik, Gregor, Jasper, Morlos: 6d20 ⇒ (14, 16, 14, 5, 16, 18) = 83

With modifiers added in, Charlie and Morlos are closest with 20 so the guards will have initiative.

Prisoners get a surprise round action. Gregor used his to open the door and fling himself in (I used DM's discretion to make that one fluid move given his dex). Avingen used his to partially move in - @A if you want to reposition yourself for your surprise round, let me know. The rest still have an action available.

You can coup de grace the two sleeping guards in round 1 should you wish to. They will be awake as of round 2 onwards. Please post your surprise round actions. You may choose to delay Round 1 posts until you see the results of surprise round actions.

Darvik will shoot at Mr. Pink (Pelar) since he is the one right in front of me plus I doubt I can CdG with a crossbow bolt, I'll let someone else try that.

The bolt looked to be headed for the man's ribs but instead it plugs the surprised guard in the upper arm. Darvik will start to reload for another shot if the opportunity is there.

FYI The positioning I had thought about is wrong. I probably wasn't clear so my fault. I was thinking we'd be out of the room and not in the room. So Avignen and Gregor would get AoO's if they exited to get to the crossbow using Darvik, who I thought would be 10-15' further back between the two tables. so theyd have to go around them to get to him.....Also the consideration was that if they beat us on initiative we'd be able to bottleneck them in....I should've been clearer and say 'we are not going in the room' lol I will in the future.

No worries - look on the bright side. My throwing you and Avingen into the room puts you in better position for a CdG removing 2 potential threats in round 1. ;) It was the 'push door open and sidestep that threw me off as I imagined it as push-follow the door in and roll to the side to give Darvik a clear shot. Not a biggie, I'm not hung up on positioning to the n'th detail as it is and if you need back out of the room, it can be arranged. (you and A/Darvik can just move around during the surprise phase. Two guards would have been in reach in rnd 1 either way though and possibly blocked your way allowing the two sleeping ones to wake up and get ready to defend.
