Omg. I have so many ideas. There are so many possible roles. The whore, the native Indian scout, the gambler, the pioneer, the missionary, the tough widow...
If I can make up my mind, I'll submit tomorrow.

At the risk of sabotaging myself, I’d just like to point out the preferred nomenclature for the first peoples in North America these days is to refer to people by their specific origin or as Native Americans (or First People in Canada), not “Indian.”

In character, doing so wouldn’t make sense, and I would hope the themes of oppression would not arise often in a relatively light-hearted wild-west game, but it’s just something to keep in mind, especially for applicants that are international.

Very well said, Litejedi.

I'll second that well said, Litejedi! Thanks!

I usually hear First Nations people for Canada. This scenario has lots of potential issues along these lines (I'm well aware that by proposing an ex-Confederate Officer I'm bringing some up myself,) that should be handled in a way that keeps everyone comfortable.

It's a rich setting, but it comes with it's historical issues which are very forefront in the here and now.

There where a lot of reasons outside of slavery that started the civil war. Though slavery was at the backbone of all of them.

The south trying to leave the union was actually the catalyst that started the civil war, not slavery itself. Perhaps your confederate soldier could just dislike the north because he thinks they overstepped their bounds by keeping the south tethered to them.

Yeah, Curly didn't come from a slave-owning household, and found the practice somewhat distasteful, but not to the point that he was speaking out against it. When the Confederate States seceded, as a Tennessee, he joined the war because of a combination of perceived tyranny on a federal level, and because it was what he would do as an officer in the states armed forces. As the war dragged on he became disillusioned; the cost in lives wasn't worth what his leaders said they were fighting for. When a particular battle went poorly, in part due to circumstances beyond his control, and in part because of his decisions, he deserted and has been wandering ever since.

Curly wasn't fighting to keep slavery as an institution, but was reacting to what he perceived as the northern aggression. Now that he's been on his own for the past 11 years, he's had plenty of time to think. He's still got the cultural baggage that he'd come with, but he'll be working hard to overcome it and judge individuals by their actions. If he can show the cowardice of being a deserter in the wrong circumstances, anyone could have their own lows that they are redeemable from. Conversely, anyone could be a shining example of virtue, no matter what background they're coming from.

I don't plan to play Curly as intentionally racist or pro-slavery, and he is examining his views of the world, but there are issues there regardless.

Arguing about the political causes of the Civil War on the internet is fraught with peril and liable to be pointless. Smarter people than most of us have been dissecting contemporaneous sources longer than I’ve been alive so I doubt I’d have anything valuable to add.

That said, this is nominally an RPG, so it gives us a chance to (if chosen) learn about something perhaps a little different than our own experience and maybe create empathy for people in different situations than our own.

Your idea for Curly is certainly credible and was likely a pretty common sentiment, but be aware that the historical record has been ... romanticized in the post reconstruction era to valorize the antebellum south. It was probably not as common a sentiment as we all would have liked (I say this as a descendent or a bunch of slave-owning early American politicians and regular citizens - I wish I could say that the famous ones were all heroes, but they weren’t).

Another fun fact, another relative of mine was William Tryon, a brutal and horrifyingly gross British governor of North Carolina and New York that fought vehemently on the side of the British against colonial interests using horrific tactics. I ain’t gonna say he’s a hero just because we’re related!

Yeah, I'm not constructing a personality that had to have existed, but rather one that I'm willing to play. It's certainly at least several steps reserved from how things would have been, but it should fit into the Western setting of a game that we're really looking for here. I'm sure there's plenty that I don't know and that I'm making lots of assumptions that I don't even realize, but I'll be doing my best to allow everyone involved to have an immersive experience in a fantasy world that they enjoy.

And then, beyond that, mostly I'm looking forward to seeing if we get some sort of Cosmic Horror like Yig and some serpent people, or something completely different as we go along.

Historical and political correctness would be even more difficult for us international board members. No matter how educated we might be, most of what we know is influenced by modern television. And that's fine - this is still just a game. And all we want to do is immerse ourselves in the fantasy worlds.
If someone, God forbid, liked Will Smith's Wild Wild West and draws his inspiration from there - let him.

So, Shontar withdraws his idea of a Cavalier VMC Cleric.

But here's Mary-Jane Tucker. A woman in a man's world. Grifter/Gambler/Gunslinger/Survivor. She can be tough as nails or charming like an angel.

I started to write a post last week, and then decided not to, but now I think I should make another go at it here.

My intention with this campaign is not to highlight some of the nastiness of our history (and there was plenty). My opinion is that while it may be true to our history, to continue to play up stereotypes and slurs simply reinforces them. Therefore, I expect no derogatory language regarding one's ancestry (native, African, Chinese, etc). Slavery is now illegal, so we will leave it at that. Women are just as capable and respected as men in my Old West. Feel free to refer to one as Apache, Muscogee, Chinese, Irish or French, if it is relevant (such as a political designation), and try to only use heritage features as necessary descriptors to set the stage, such as you might use blonde, dark-skinned, blue-eyed. There really should be no need for ethnic slurs in our game.

I am not going to be the political correctness police, but I see no real need for being THAT accurate to history. Remember, in Pathfinder your race is Human.

Fair enough?

<This Human understands.

That sounds great, PJP.

Like I said, im not interested in litigating the past. My comments were largely informational and directed towards mostly international posters who may not be aware of some taboos we have in 21st century North America.

For the Hunter class, do you want us to limit our spells (until level 4) to those without an obvious external effect, avoiding things like “create water” and instead choosing things like “guidance”? I went in this direction with my choices, but I am not completely sold on aspect of the falcon, so I’m ruminating on some other things available. I like longer-duration buffs usually.

Sounds like excellent ground rules!

-Zorblag R`Lyeh

Fair enough!

I always say "We all bleed red!". I had just chosen 'Human' for Perry and think I'll stick to that. Heinz 57 American mixed breed.... or true Mutt. That's my real background so it should be pretty easy for me.

Grand Lodge

@LiteJedi - Yes, I think the idea is to keep to things that you can at least play off as natural, or even supernatural, without it appearing too magical.

So I could see Create Water being ok if the effect was to find a hidden underground spring, or even a rain dance sort of thing. Buffs like aspect of the falcon and cat's grace aren't really that visible, so much less of a problem.

Entangle and faerie fire, though, would be obvious no-gos.

Hope it's not too late to throw my hat in the ring? This game has a Deadlands feel, and I'm quite excited about the possibility!

Based on the posts I've read, including about the guns/ammo being 1/100 of cost in book instead of 1/10, I should have plenty of starting funds to get that revolver (advanced firearm). And if my math is correct, the ammo for such (metal cartridge + bullet) would costs $0.16 for each round?

In keeping with the flavor of the period, and with GM permission, I'm calling alchemist's fire "dynamite" (sounds more like nitroglycerin really, but that'd be damn dangerous to carry around!) and marked it as such on my character sheet. If that's a no-go though, just let me know.

Feel free to give me a heads-up if I made any other mistakes on the character sheet as well.

Count me out. I've been accepted for two other.

Grand Lodge
