Aki Mori |
Aki darts back out of the cave, yipping a warning. Once outside she shifts back to her true form.
"There's a giant lobster in there," she says, drawing Yin and turning back towards the cave entrance.
GM Fuzzfoot |
The lobster comes out, chasing Aki.
Round 1: (Bold may act)
Pharithstilis
Celebeth
Echo
Nathan
Aki
Creature/Red
- Echo - |
Echo focuses on her defences, using her psychic powers to erect a magical barrier around herself.
Mage armour.
Pharithstilis Euduethistle |
Pharithstilis takes a step back, loads his crossbow and takes a shot, all the while wondering if giant lobster tastes as good as giant crab.
Crossbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
The bolt simply bounces off the lobster's shell.
Celebeth Quinciel |
Longbow attack, point-blank, past cover: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 7 + 1 - 4 = 14
"Ooh, this'll make a great boiled dinner!" says Celebeth, before she bounces an arrow off the huge, angry crustacean.
GM Fuzzfoot |
Yes, there is definitely enough plant growth for entangle!
The lobster chases Aki out of the cavern and is still about 20' away from you.
Round 2: (Bold may act)
Pharithstilis
Celebeth
Echo (Mage Armor, 4 hrs)
Nathan
Aki
Lobster/Red (7 dmg)
Celebeth Quinciel |
Longbow attack, point-blank, past cover: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 7 + 1 - 4 = 15
Longbow damage, point-blank: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Twang!
Aki Mori |
Aki casts mage armor on herself and steps to one side, hoping to lure the creature out to where it can be flanked.
- Echo - |
Knowledge Nature: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18 Echo wants to know if the lobster has an intelligence score. (I'm not sure if they count as mindless vermin or animals).
Echo focuses her mind on the lobster, probing for the weakest part of its brain... Then she sends all of her psychic powers at its mind, causing it immense pain. Casting mind thrust II at it: Will DC 16 for half damage. She'll also spend 2 points from her phrenic pool when casting it to activate defensive prognostication, which grants her +4 AC for two rounds, which would raise it up to AC 19.
Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 1, 1) = 7
Suddenly, the rock launches itself at the lobster! Casting telekinetic projectile.
Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Bludgeoning Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Confirming a Critical: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Extra Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Pharithstilis Euduethistle |
As the lobster emerges from the cave, Pharithstilis starts waving his free hand around and making strange cooing noises again. The vines hanging about the cave entrance begin to slither like snakes toward the giant lobster.
Readying to cast Entangle once the lobster moves past the cave mouth and there is enough room to maneuver around it.
GM Fuzzfoot |
Nathan and Echo both manage to make small cracks in the non-intelligent giant's carapace. As the lobster moves another 5 feet, Pharithstillis casts a spell, causing much of the jungle to come alive and start grasping at everyone. Aki and Echo find themselves entangled.
Reflex Save, DC 15 - Lobster: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Aki: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Celebeth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Echo: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Nathan: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Pharithstilis: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
The lobster uses its larger claw to snap at Echo.
Attack, 15' reach: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (5, 1) + 9 = 15
Grab: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (15) + 19 = 34
Constrict: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 1) + 9 = 13
Echo passes out from the extreme pain and damage to her frail body as she is torn betweeen plant and crustacean.
Lobster remains in area, so is now Entangled!
Reflex Save, DC 15 - Lobster: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Round 3: (Bold may act)
Pharithstilis
Celebeth
Echo (28 dmg, unconsious, Mage Armor, 4 hrs)
Nathan
Aki
Lobster/Red (19 dmg)
GM Fuzzfoot |
I am afraid 5' step is not possible, due to the difficult terrain imposed by the entangle spell.
Pharithstilis Euduethistle |
sh!t
With horror at seeing his magic, once again, backfire, and watching the lobster take Echo down, Pharithstilis stumbles backward through the jungle, wondering if there's any means to crack through the lobster's tough shell.
Kn. Nature: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Looking for a weakness, if any.
Not being able to think straight, he lobs a glob of acid at the crustacean, thinking, hey, it worked on the crab.
ranged touch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
acid dmg: 1d3 ⇒ 2
- Echo - |
Body limp and broken, Echo doesn't seem to be breathing.
Aki Mori |
Aki says something very unladylike in Tien as she tries to break out of the entangling vines.
Escape Artist: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
She manages to slip out and hastily backs out of the area of grasping greenery.
Celebeth Quinciel |
Longbow attack, point-blank, past cover: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 7 + 1 - 4 = 24
Longbow damage, point-blank: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Confirm crit, point-blank, past cover: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 7 + 1 - 4 = 15
Crit damage?: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (5, 4) + 2 = 11
Celebeth grumbles and takes on a serious expression as she fires again.
GM Fuzzfoot |
Celebeth puts and arrow in the creature (no crit), and Pharithstillis burns a small hole in it. The lobster drops Echo's body, and grabs Nathan, crushing him as well, and holding him tight.
Attack, 15' reach: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 11 - 2 = 25
Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (4, 3) + 9 = 16
Grab: 1d20 + 19 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 19 - 2 = 22
Constrict: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 4) + 9 = 16
Round 4: (Bold may act)
Pharithstilis
Celebeth
Echo (28 dmg, unconsious, Mage Armor, 4 hrs)
Nathan (32 dmg, grappled)
Aki
Lobster/Red (30 dmg)
Aki Mori |
"Get rid of those vines!" Aki shouts, hoping it was one of them and not something else in the area. "They're doing more harm than good!"
Pharithstilis Euduethistle |
With a wave of his hand Pharithstilis dismisses the vines. With Echo badly gone, and Nathan in the lobster's grasp, the gnome lets out his fiercest warcry, drops his crossbow and runs at the overgrown crawfish. He slides beneath the lobster as it is focused on Nathan.
Acrobatics to position beneath the lobster: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Celebeth Quinciel |
With the lobster not slowing down, Celebeth plants another arrow into it.
Longbow attack, point-blank, past cover: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 1 - 4 = 17
Longbow damage, point-blank: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Aki Mori |
As soon as the entangling plant growth vanishes, Aki darts forwards, hoping the lobster is too busy with Nathan to strike her. She chants a quick spell and reaches out with an electrically-charged hand.
Shocking Grasp touch attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Damage: 5d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 1, 1, 3) = 15
GM Fuzzfoot |
Pharithstillis drops the entangle spell, and tries to dodge and weave his way under the lobster. Unfortunately, the lobster senses him and reaches out with the other claw to grab him.
AoO Small Claw: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Celebeth shoots another arrow that is deflected by the hard shell, while Aki rushes in. Luckily, the lobster was not able to respond, and Aki was able to electrify the beast!
Still need an action from Nathan.
Round 4: (Bold may act)
Pharithstilis (11 dmg)
Celebeth
Nathan (32 dmg, grappled)
Aki
Lobster/Red (45 dmg)
GM Fuzzfoot |
It works as a spell-like ability, so I believe it does require a concentration check.
Nathan Bensson |
Actually it is listed as a supernatural ability not a spell like ability. Hence I didn't think it needed a concentration check. I'm not going to bother to even try the check since I can't make it while grappled. It was the only option I had to avoid dying, but I suppose I can just wait to die instead, which is what I will do as the alternative.
GM Fuzzfoot |
Ok, if it is supernatural it doesn't require the check - I knew some kinetic abilities were, but I didn't see a reference to that (but I was also looking at a secondary source.)
Nathan quickly repairs some of the damage to his body, but the lobster is unrelenting and continues to squeeze him. The pain is intense, but Nathan manages to hold on to life.
Constrict Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (2, 3) + 9 = 14
Nathan - I have you at 1 hp, but do you have non-lethal dmg from burn? If so, then you are unconscious (which likely will save you here).
Snapping the smaller claw at Pharisthillis again.
Claw Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Round 5: (Bold may act)
Pharithstilis (18 dmg)
Celebeth
Nathan (38 dmg, grappled or unconscious and dropped)
Aki
Lobster/Red (45 dmg)
GM Fuzzfoot |
in that case...
The crab drops the limp body of Nathan to the ground, and waves it's combat claw menacingly.
Round 5: (Bold may act)
Pharithstilis (18 dmg)
Celebeth
Nathan (38 dmg 4 NL, unconscious)
Aki
Lobster/Red (45 dmg)
Pharithstilis Euduethistle |
After taking two giant claws to the face, and then seeing the lobster drop Nathan, his body lying broken next to Echo's, Pahrithstilis let's out another wild scream, this one less terrifying, more so primal and desperate. He has no idea how to beat this monster's defenses, and he has no idea how to save his friends.
Bloodied, he takes a step back and repeats the only spell that seems to have any effect at all.
5ft step diagonally, moved on map, still in threatened area I believe
Concentration to cast defensively: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Acid Splash Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Acid Dmg: 1d3 ⇒ 1
The little gnome is too far gone to even cast a simple cantrip.
Aki Mori |
Aki tries to cast another shocking grasp.
Concentration: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
But she has to dodge aside as the creature starts to turn. Swiftly she slashes at the air with her blade and then jumps forward...
...landing thirty feet away, in the cave, after which she darts a bit further back in. Dimensional Slide--the movement does not provoke an attack of opprotunity
"Get away from here!" she shouts to the others. "I can distract it and then escape!"
GM Fuzzfoot |
Celebeth - we are waiting on a big move from you :)
Celebeth Quinciel |
Since the crustacean is no longer holding anyone, Celebeth has a clear shot on it.
Longbow attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 7 + 1 = 10
...to no avail.
GM Fuzzfoot |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
The lobster falls for Aki's ruse, and turns back into the cave, snapping it's claws at the sly fox as it chases it back into the cave.
15' Range Combat Claw: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 1) + 9 = 13
Grab: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (12) + 19 = 31
Constrict Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (6, 6) + 9 = 21
Ouch.
Round 6: (Bold may act)
Pharithstilis (18 dmg)
Celebeth
Nathan (38 dmg 4 NL, unconscious)
Aki (34 dmg, dead - unless I am missing something)
Lobster/Red (45 dmg)
Celebeth Quinciel |
"How should I know?" the elf shouts back as she hurls a ball of dust at the lobster. The ball explodes into glittering light.
Glitterdust, Will save DC 15.
Pharithstilis Euduethistle |
With the lobster back in the cave with it's back turned from them, Pharithstilis hustles over to Nathan, grabs him by the arm, and begins dragging him away from deadly crustacean's lair. Once he get's as far as he can go, he does his best to stop Nathan's wounds from bleeding.
Pharithstilis' drag capacity is 375lbs, I doubt Nathan weighs as much.
Str check just in case: 1d20 ⇒ 7
Heal check to help stabilize: 1d20 ⇒ 9
GM Fuzzfoot |
Luckily, Nathan is out due to NL Damage, so he will recover. Assuming Celebeth retreats as well? If so, the lobster does not follow.
Celebeth Quinciel |
Yeah, we can't kill this thing.
Pharithstilis Euduethistle |
If it looks like the coast is clear, Pharithstilis also pulls Echo away from the cave, realizing then that she is indeed dead. He waits around a safe distance from the entrance and watches for Aki. When she doesn't return, he can only assume the worst.
GM Fuzzfoot |
You pull back, and lick your wounds. Aki is lost to you, presumed dead, and it doesn't appear that you can help Echo either.
Limping back to Cro-ah-krik, the grippli tribe welcomes you back and nurses your wounds. They praise you for your efforts, but resign themselves to continuing to fight off the Gengar as they have always done.
