Background
As she grew older, however, the shadows over Minkai grew longer. The emperor retreated into seclusion, leaving the Jade Regent to reign over the land. The longer he ruled, the more despotic he grew, and the more his grip on the land tightened, the more dour and serious Hanako's parents grew. As if in response to this growing darkness, both started to teach their daughter (and her two younger brothers) different skills--her father taught her of magic, while her mother, oddly enough, taught her to use small blades, and to use her talent for talk to convince others she was something she wasn't. Hanako never asked, but in the years to come she came to suspect her mother was part of Minkai's secretive ninja clans. She wondered if, perhaps, some of her mother's trips to buy ingredients for her father hadn't been something more... When she came of age, Hanako insisted on starting to put her skills to use. She left home and went to another city far away, seeking to distance herself from her family to protect them, given the Jade Regent's cruel manner of punishing relatives of those who opposed him. Before she left, however, her parents gave her gifts--her father gave her a spellbook, in which he had copied many of the spells he knew. Her mother gave her a short blade, a mythril wakazashi with a strange symbol on the hilt. In the city where Hanako finally stopped, she started quietly searching for others who also fought against the Jade Regent. In time she found them, and she slowly gained their confidence, using her skills and innate kitsune magic to infiltrate locations important to the despotic regime and wreak havoc before vanishing back into the city. Unfortunately, her actions eventually drew the attention of more powerful oni to her. After one brush with them, Hanako had to flee for her life, barely keeping one step ahead of the pursuing oni. Eventually her friends managed to get her passage on a boat leaving Minkai entirely, and she fled her nation. But the oni still pursued her, and so she had to flee further and further, until at last she joined a caravan crossing the Crown of the World to the distant continent of Avistan. There, at last, thousands of miles from her home, she was able to rest. There has been no sign that the oni had followed her this far... but no sign does not mean they have not. By now, she had gone by many names, and worn many faces. Years had passed since last she had been called by name or shown her fur. Indeed, disguising herself had grown so customary that she continued to do so even now that she seemed to have reached safety. But she did not rest for long, for she found that, even here so far from home, tyrants supported by fiendish forces reigned. When she learned of the devil-worshipping land of Cheliax, she saw another place that needed her skills desperately. Working slowly, she managed to make contact with agents of the Bellflower Network in Andoran. When she demonstrated her talents to them, they agreed she would be useful to their cause, and she slowly won their trust. She, in turn, learned of Milani, and began to worship the Everbloom as well as the Desna. Eventually she made her way into Cheliax, where she quickly began smuggling slaves out of the country and striking small blows against the nation's diabolic regime. It was as part of one such operation that she boarded the fateful ship. She had managed to get work as a deckhand, taking the name and form of Aki Mori, a tough Tien woman supposedly from Absalom (she claimed her parents had immigrated to the city before she was born). She had planned to learn all she could of the slaving operation before striking a blow for freedom... but fate had other ideas. Appearance
