Hello and welcome to recruitment for Hell's Rebels.

This adventure path is special, as it plays as far as I know exclusively in Kintargo. No travelling over half the world to hunt the big evil. The big evil comes to your hometown, and there you have to deal with it.

Which means Valeros, Amiri, Harsk and all those who abandoned their home and became adventurers don't need to apply. This adventure is for characters who live in Kintargo. Either from birth, or because they settled here years ago. And still want to live in Kintargo.

So everyone who wants to join the game needs to know Kintargo and have a life in Kintargo. A job, maybe a hobby, friends and a home. You're not the guys sitting in a bar waiting for a quest. There might still be the adventurous type who doesn't want to be a farmer who got a hump from all the hard work. Maybe you're the exterminator who gets called when the rats grow so large or plentiful that the average commoner doesn't dare to go into the basement anymore. Or you're a scribe, an artisan, a merchant, or even a fisherman. You're part of a family. Or even a single mum trying to make ends meet.

It is the circumstances that will make heroes of you. At the start you're average citizens of this nice town.

Wait for me to open recruitment, the info is not complete yet.

Character Build Rules:
- 25pt buy
- No stats over 19 incl. racial modifier.
- No stats under 10 before racial modifier.
- Background Skills
- Two traits, one of them a campaign trait
- pathfinder material that is accessible on paizo (if you have something cool stuff from paizo that is not OGL, ask first; No third party stuff).

The average person in Kintargo is human. And we're going to play a rebellion. For races, I'd say core, but I will allow others if it makes for a cool roleplay idea. But even with core, that 7ft tall half orc that is seen at every place where the rebellion strikes will end up in jail faster than you can count to three. Same might be true for a dwarf or other races that are rather seldom on the overall population. Just keep that in mind.
Population of Kintargo 11,900 (10,115 humans, 476 halflings, 357 tieflings, 119 half-elves, 833 other)

This rebellion thing will be four people against the town government. If your head sticks out, it will be cut off.

I love rogues. But they are lacking mechanically. Therefore there will be two options to improve them for this game: Either you take full BAB, or the Alchemists spellcasting. If you do this casting with Int and prepared spells, or Cha and spontaneous casting is up to you (spells known like bard). But the limit of the alchemist only being able to cast on himself applies here.

The format of the posts in gameplay should be the following:

"Howdy." Carl says as he enters the saloon and looks around. He walks up to the bar and puts a gold on it. "Give me a shot of whiskey." he says and thinks 'Hopefully it is not my last drink.'.
(What shall I roll to check if the guy wanting me dead is here. Sense Motive?)

- Tell from the perspective of the narrator.
- Write in present tense.
- use bold for direct speech
- use italics for thoughts

I like roleplaying, so giving an idea of who your character will be is more interesting to me than the complete stats.

Applications please...

Grand Lodge

Dot, I have a bard/Rogue who will be going Lion Blade, basically a spy from Taldor here to sew dissent.

How about a vigilante? I think this campaign screams vigilante.

Grand Lodge

Might do either a Human Quarterstaff fighter or a Halfling Swashbuckler

Uthraed wrote:

It does indeed. I have no experience with that class, and the double identity stuff seemed like something anyone could do without class features for it. But if you think it is worth it, then give it a shot. If there is a place for that, it's Hell's Rebels.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Maps Subscriber

I am thinking female human paladin of Iomedae, a former noble house that was destroyed in the Thrune ascendency. With her grandfather's weapon, she has vowed to return her family to greatness while honoring the Inheritor at the same time.

More to come if I can get the time to create the concept.

Grand Lodge

I also have a Female Rogue Halfling who is all for Halfling rights and makes fun of the Tallies

Good application:
Hi, I'm Clark Kent. I work as a reporter for the Daily Planet in my home town Metropolis. I work with the editorial office that does the news on local crime. I have a crush on Lois Lane, a colleague, but she only likes Superman.

Which is my true identity, by the way. I fight for justice and for keeping the world safe with my superpowers.
(Add some information about class and role here)

Bad application:
I have a vigilante who can fly and shoot lasers out of his eyes.

Using superman here, as everyone knows him. And taking an abstract (non-PF) example keeps me from ending up with a character for my own game.

Or to make it more specific (still GM Foxy giving examples):

Hi, I'm Karl. I work at the Sallix Salt Works, filling sacks with salt every damned day of the week, but sunday. It's a debilitating chore. But at least it pays for the fun I have at The Thrashing Badger. The ale is good, and and the regular brawls are the highlights of my week.

The wife doesn't like it, but that old coot doesn't like anything since our son left Kintargo. I live in a small cottage in Old Kintargo with my wife Elisabeth.
(Male human swashbuckler, front line meat shield - with some intimidate and bluff for social interaction)

All places Karl refers to are from the Player's Guide of the AP, to put Karl into context of the city. And to know where he will be found usually. You'll find that The Thrashing Badger is given as burned down inthe PG. And there is the reason Karl will be pissed enough to join a rebellion against the ones who are rumoured to have caused that fire.

Another great background would be the pizza delivery guy. Would always have a reason to go anywhere in town. Just that telephones aren't invented yet is a big flaw here.

Hi. Meliandri's been waiting for a Hell's Rebels for a while. I'll need to update her point buy, but she should be close to ready other than that.

Her background is available in her profile. Feel free to use any of it to torture...er, integrate her into the game.

Hello GM Foxy here is my application for Alamara Hornwood. I will create an avatar if selected for the game. Constructive criticism welcomed!

"I am Alamara Hornwood," says the young woman with blazing eyes and a hardset mouth. She raises her magnificent longsword with reverence and a practiced hand. "This is my weapon, blessed by Iomedae and my tool to retrieve what was taken from my family, by the usurpers -- The Thrune. I will fight to see their diabolical oppression ended over Cheliax, and the rightful worship of the Inheritor resumed."

She sheathes the fine weapon but her expression is no less determined. "My brother, Alyn and I were raised by my poor mother in the light of the Inheritor. We were told the stories of how my grandfather and then my own father were cut down by the devil-worshiping rulers of our land. The same rulers who usurped the throne and cast my noble family into ruin. Though my mother had to work her fine hands to the bone to keep us housed and fed, she made sure my brother was trained in the blade, growing up with the prowess of arms to return my family to prominence. He was a magnificent warrior, my brother Alyn, but..." The determined girl blinks back tears, holding herself together, if only barely.

But, someone talked. Someone always does! Alyn was taken by the Thrune and their minions and has not been returned to us. That was 5 years ago. Since that time I have taken up my grandfather's sword and dedicated myself to the ideals of Alyn, my father, and grandfather. I have trained night and day with the holy weapon of my goddess and have become her instrument of revenge on this evil land. I only pray she continues to grant me the strength and courage to wipe that scourge from this place, and return what is right. My family name shall be restored, as shall the rightful rule of justice and good in Cheliax!" She pounds her mailed fist on the table, underscoring the emotion behind her words.

See the crunch below. I didn't see any guidelines about starting cash, so I have not geared Alamara yet. I did take the feat Chosen of Iomedae which grants a MW longsword. Not try to min/max here, but thought it was a compelling part of her story. If you disagree, I can change it out without concern. Let me know if you wish to see or hear more from her. I have included her Paladin Code, to make sure it aligns ok with the path of the story.

Meliandri's background is quite a bit :) I like it. Revolution for mint flavoured liquor!

As you incorporated the stuff that happens two weeks before the start of the AP I might as well add, that I plan to start the day before the night of ashes, to get a bit of everyday life from everyone before Barzillai Thrune turns life sour.

For Alamara Hornwood
It's an interesting storyline. A little heavy on the drama, but that is common with PF heroes to be ;)

As dying through the hands of House Thrune in the past would have been very unlikely in Kintargo until the start of the AP, maybe have your family moving here to get away from Thrune five years ago and your mum not really being interested to lose another family member to that endless and hopeless fight?

Also please take the time to add something to describe your everyday life in Kintargo.

I once heard it said that the first, the very first thing any normal person does, in any situation ... is nothing at all.

A masked man walks down a dark street, strung bow on his back keeping his cloak in place.

And it's true. The second thing that normal people do, that's to complain.

Old and gnarled trees line the street, shade the time worn houses and small shops. The masked man absentmindedly kicks at the leaves littering the ground and thinks about how long the trees have stood here, how long the city has stood here, and how quickly it all went to the dogs. About how long he's stood here. He starts walking again.

And that's useless.

But is it really so wrong to sit and complain? If so nearly everyone does it. If so nearly everyone does it, can it be so wrong? It's not evil. I'm sure it's not evil. But it does evil. If you don't ... if you don't fight, if you stay neutral, than you've handed the victory to those with the power to take it!

The masked man stops in his tracks, looks around at the city he grew up in. Looks at how old it is.

Maybe neutrality is worse than evil. Maybe ... fear, or selfishness, or apathy, or whatever it is that keeps us normal people from doing anything at all, whatever it is that keeps us from sticking our necks out, maybe we're worse than evil. Because there's a lot more of us than there are good people or evil people, but we did nothing but whine about it while this city went to the dogs.

The masked man stops at a street corner and waits. At length, he's joined by another. "So ... they said you want to join the Silver Ravens?" the other asks. The masked man replies, affirmative.

I'm done being normal.

Magnus Aferson is Zealot Vigilante of Abadar. (Probably. His build isn't finalized.) He's a ruthless if not particularly successful businessman in his early forties. Persistent as a cockroach and an opportunistic bastard, Aferson has always managed to keep his head above the water through good and bad times.

Despite people often finding him initially charming, he isn't a well liked man, a copious drinker with a hair-trigger temper and a reputation for screwing you over if you give him the chance. He has few close friends.

Magnus changes industries as often as he runs a promising start up into the ground with poor management, which is to say, frequently. He's currently living off savings while trying to find the motivation to pick himself up and give it another go, and wondering if there's even any point. He can usually be found in his house, drinking alone.

Magnus fights with a longbow, he'll do decent ranged damage while being a general skill monkey. At least, that's the current plan, I haven't even decided his class for sure.

I will borrow that good entry format, seems nice and concise :) Going for a fairly unmelodramatic background for once with a very studenty Student Wizard.

Good day, I am Salonius Baradin, a privileged Student at the Alabaster Academy in Kintargo's Villegre district. Botany and the arcane arts are my official subjects, while in my own time I make a study of moral philosophy as part of the anonymous Alabaster Mirror - where members secretly exchange dissertations upon the rights of gods and men.

I am from a declining Noble house and have the regrettable distinction of being both the youngest and the only male amidst no less than eight siblings. I visit home at least thrice a week at pain of being summoned by the matriarchy, and in order to commiserate with my father and politely reject various marriage arrangements proffered by my relentless mother. Until recently three of my sisters were involved with the Opera and I frequently attended performances, the theft of the Opera House is yet another great detriment inflicted upon Kintargo by a self entitled tyrant.

Currently I am managing a small experimental orchard testing various types of inter species grafting and the effects of exposure to magic in plants. My familiar Peeko serves as a invaluable aid, and communication system - it is far more convenient to have Peeko receive my Mothers lectures and "relay" then to me. I live in a large cottage behind the orchard with Professor Glenell, mostly because she finds having someone able to prestidigitate at will saves her paying for a cook or cleaner and my presence is unlikely to stir up any unfortunate gossip.

I do have some romantic entanglements, but they are largely clandestine and fleeting affairs due to my unconventional gender preferences - and honestly where so people find the time?

------------

Have not done the crunch yet, but Salonius would be a Wizard with the Wood elemental school and high diplomacy. If it is allowable I would love to give him the Student of Philosophy trait, and his Campaign Trait would be History of the Rebellion.

Will make an avatar if chosen, but here goes

"Hi! I'm Simon, a scribe in the library at the Alabaster Academy. Just pushing papers and paying bills. And on a plus side, nobody really notices when a halfling goes missing. Currently I live near the gates leading out of the city to the north. The walk is a little long in the morning, but nothing too bad.

Also have you seen any of the old books mentioning the Silver Ravens? Absolutely fascinating really. Why am I here at the protest? Well, I'm mad as hell, and I'm not taking it anymore! The fact that I look similar to a human child doesn't make me any less angry!"

(Halfling Oracle, Streets Mystery from Heroes of the Streets, sneaky and silver-tongued, a little bit of knowledge and linguistics, but no trapfinding)

Simon has the childlike feat, Human Shadow race trait, as well as Behind the Veil. Also checking to see if streets would be okay as an oracle mystery. His mystery is Haunted.

Do we know when recruitment is closing yet?

Also, just to confirm: do unchained rogues get the power modification you mentioned earlier or just chained rogues?

Student of Philosophy is fine with me. I'm a big fan of maxing skills. That's an option I was not aware of :)

Nathan Goodrich wrote:

I haven't set a time for closing, but I tend to close recruitment as soon as I have enough players that I would like to play with. Because I don't like to disappoint too many people.

As for the rogue - choose whichever you like. I don't think the unchained rogue is that big an improvement over the rogue. But I also would choose the unchained rogue for the free weapon finesse.

But this is not your avatar you're playing with? Because I chose that one to go with Barzillai Thrune (due to lack of an original pic of him in the avatars)

I'll get my characters background up when I get home tonight.

Here is a mostly completed Salonius :) Please note he may seem over the Point Buy, but that is because he has a +1 enhancement bonus to Dex from his arcane school.

@Foxy Quickpaw how do we determine staring gold?

Jorum wears his hair long, a tight pony tail down his back, his coat is a dark purple in colouring, with a brown undercoat and black slacks with green boots. He sings at the local taverns earning his keep each night and then some. He sings songs of drinking and songs of humanity.

Jorums parents were actively involved in the court of Taldor, being from the great city of Oppara had many great opprotunities. Jorum had an apptitude for singing and sneaking, his parents knew that the country had their own talented spies. The training was the hardest thing Jorum had ever done, but once he was done he was given a mision that had just come across his commanders desk.

Rumors of unrest in Kintargo, Jorum was sent there as a traveling minstrel to find out what he could and to make some contacts that the government of Taldor could use to exploit. Jorum was sent to recruit people to his cause secretly to help with taking down the Devils in charge of this Country.

Hi! The AP sounds like a lot of fun. I hope you will consider my investigator. He is a skill monkey, a decent combatant- I hope, and should be a good charismatic guy. I like to post a lot and am very reliable because I have little kids and never go anywhere at night. :) The crunch is in the alias.

The name is Gibson. Saul Gibson. I'm a sleuth. An investigator. Some have called me a detective or a gumshoe and sometimes a pain in the ass, but I don't pay much mind to other's opinions. My office is over on Slag Street; just look for the door with my name on it.
Gibson Investigations. Missing persons found. Cheating husbands caught. Murderers caught. But only will do that last one when the Law decides to ignore the case. That tends to happen in Kintargo.

In a nutshell, we at Gibson Investigations make sure the bad caught and the good rewarded. Though I don't get involved after finding the evidence. Normally. Of course, dames always have a way to keep stringing me along. It's always about a dame.

It was a dame who got me into this job, decades ago. A redhead. She was a knockout, the kind of dame who bowls you over simply by looking at you. Can't ever say no to someone like that, and she needed my help. Her father was missing. I worked my contacts on the street and found her dad, sure enough. Wasn't even all that hard, but of course the redhead strung me along with a kiss and the promise of something more once I found her. Turns out the father was actually the husband, and I was thrown to the side like last week's garbage. But the case let me know that I enjoyed the work- the thrill of the case, the shakedowns of low lifes, dodging gorillas and making the Law look stupid.

Even found a partner about ten years ago, a smart fellow, a healer by the name of Logan Hawkes. I found his missing daughter; she was kidnapped by some unsavory folk, but I tracked her before anything happened. He liked my style and was good with a healers kit, and I certainly could use someone to patch me up after a tussle. Two of us solved more than a few cases together, Hawkes and me. Turns out he was a part of some secret society called the Silver Ravens. He was a friend and a partner, but never did tell me much about it. I let it be. I never told him my life story, either. Don't tell anyone about the wife and the son and the alcohol that drove them away.

Anyway, to the business at hand. Kintargo is starting to smell like a sewer, and it looks like it is up to me to open the manhole cover. House Thrune is trying to institute martial law. I tell you, they are up to something. And a few days back, Hawkes stopped showing up at the office. His family doesn't know what happened, so I had to ask around. My ears and eyes on street are all saying that members of the Silver Ravens have disappeared all over the city, and now martial law? I believe in coincidences about as much as I believe a blonde with a sob story.

Now, I got a note under my door from someone who claimed to know about Hawkes and the Silver Raven's disappearance, and says he will wait for me at the protest planned for later in the day. Says he will wear a leather glove on his right hand. Normally I wouldn't go to something like this. I have no love for House Thrune, that's an understatement for sure, but going to a protest sounds like a good way to get killed. But Hawkes is my partner, and I never let a case go cold. Time for this old gumshoe to do a little investigatin'.

As an additional info: The Players guide might give you the impression, that the Silver Ravens are a well known group.

But in the AP the Silver Ravens ceased to be before anyone of the PCs was born. They are at best a legend you heard your Grandma tell you. If you manage a really high know(history) check.

Just collecting what we got so far for me as an overview:
Meliandri Chastain-Aulamaxa - a noble Bard liking mint liquor
Alamara Hornwood - Paladin of Iomedae seeking revenge
Magnus Aferson - Vigilante with the desire to not being neutral anymore
Salonius Barradin - Plant loving Wizard in the Alabaster Academy
Saul Gibson - Private eye investigator
Simon, a scribe in the library at the Alabaster Academy - Oracle
Jorum - a bard?

"Hear my prayers Sarenrae, for I have sinned. Though I had no choice . Esperenza had the yellow fever, and she was pregnant. We had no money, for I am a con man, not an honest worker. So I did what I do best, sold false remedies made with rat piss, trying to earn enough money to pay for a real doctor for my sick wife. And they arrested me. But they did not put me in jail, Hell no! Like that croocked Priest told me: "Put your talents to good use. Work for us, and we will heal your love."

So I did. I became part of their heinous machine. I became an interrogator, a torturer. An evil man. And as long as I helpt them, Esperanza was okay. But one day, she discovered what I was doing. She saw the infamy I was part of, and she left, went back to her mother. Where she died, from the yellow fever.

As it turned out, they did not cure her disease. Just the symptoms. I'm guessing it was a way for them to keep me around, on a leash.

So here I am now, praying you. For the sins I did. And for the one I'm about to do. They stoled my life. They murdered my wife. And they turned me into a monster, preying on my weakness. Well, I say no more! They want secrets? They are afraid of sedition? Then I shall give them betrayal, murder, and riot. I will watch the Thrune burn, or I'll die trying. For I am the con man, and I know what they got in their horned heads: fear. Fear of the people."

Introducing to you people Oratio Vencarsi, Varisian Mesmerist, who is more than willing to take on the Thrune! Ex-Asmodean of course. Can serve as an infiltrator, a party face, and a magical debuffer. I'll create the profil if you are interested!

You are right, I definitely did get that impression from the Players Guide. I'll adjust my biography in my alias to fix this but won't post it here, so I don't take up the real estate.

edit: Actually, I more than got an impression, page 9 in the "meeting a contact" part pretty much spells out exactly that the Silver Ravens are a current group. Must have been an editor or author error. If I take this "meeting a contact" sub-trait, how should I treat it?

I finished "Altered Carbon" The other day, I like the idea of the Envoy, comes to town first, gets the people on their side then lines up behind them to take down the Government. Jorum is a political spy who is there to get the people on his side.

From the player guide "meeting a contact"

You might know someone who was supposedly in the Silver Ravens;

Just run with that, and forget about the "recently the Silver Ravens went dark".

i am gonna go with My Rogue Halfling, gonna take the full BaB. Will readjust her and stuff but this is her

My thoughts so far:

I really like *1
Meliandri Chastain-Aulamaxa (Bard)
Salonius Barradin (Wizard)

Characters with potential *2
Saul Gibson (Investigator)
Oratio Vencarsi (Mesmerist)
Alamara Hornwood (Paladin)

*1 The background of these two characters is deeply rooted in Kintargo. And they have a life, that has nothing to do with planning a rebellion. If Kintargo wouldn't change and Thrune wouldn't come to town in person, they would just going on living their life. That's exactly what I was after. And the life they chose is fun to read.

*2 These characters also have interesting backgrounds, but their rooting in Kintargo is a bit lacking. It is no big deal, it could be fixed easily.

Like Oratio going to the Silver Star regularily, as that is a secret meeting point of followers of Sarenrae. Also, that background of being forced to work for the church of Asmodeus this way is also too harsh for Kintargo of today. Maybe he fled here after abandoning his former masters, only to end up between Thrune and Asmodeus again once Barzillai Thrune takes over in Kintargo?

Saul named a few people who might be NPCs in town, but nothing specific for Kintargo. That background would work just as well for Korvosa. Place that redhead in the tavern named Clenchjaw’s. You never went there ever since, but took your money to the Thrashing Badger instead. Which would leave you between a rock and a hard place once the Thrashing Badger burns down.

Similar problem with Alamara. Doing sword fighting training in the basement is nice, but who do you know? There is no group of Iomedae found in Kintargo. Maybe visit with those of Sarenrae? At least it would be similar minded people. And you'd already know Oratio.

Now you could complain: If you know better how to play these characters, why don't you simply play that AP with yourself. That thought has crossed my mind, but it is not really fun. It is too predictable. And the reason I'm being so obnoxious about this is straight from the AP book itself (quote from memory as I don't find the reference right now): Make sure that Kintargo and it's people are important to the players. The GM gets reminded of this several times in the book, and in the GM threads you can read what happens if the players are not: "Let's blow up the opera house with Thrune in it!". Which is totally reasonable if you want to throw over Thrune. But a no go for anyone loving Kintargo! (And it would be the death of the AP too)

If you are just a group of murder hobos, you might kill a group of Dottari Guards that come along and do a thorough search of a tavern you're currently in. But if you're friends with the owner, and know that opposing the guards openly will lead to a closing or burning down of that tavern, you would react differently.

As these five characters are a bit short on healing capabilities I could flesh out Alamara's mum as a low level Iomedaen Cleric NPC.

So, what are your thoughts about that?

Jorum as a spy coming from outside to throw over the government, doesn't appeal to me, for I prefer characters rooted in town.

Magnus Aferson also has a certain lack of connections in Kintargo, but in contrast to the other characters, nothing sprang to mind how to fix it. Maybe it is his gloomy mood. I can't exactly put my finger on it.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Maps Subscriber

I am taking a more detail look through the Players Guide to tie Alamara specifically to Kintargo. More to come on that. Mum as an NPC cleric is fine with me, or dealing with healing via the Sarenrite group that we may be affiliated with instead of in combat.

I just noticed, that Alamara and Oratio didn't tell what they do for a living.

And I already have an idea for a future customer of Saul. Muhahaha :D

As for the Sarenites and healing: Depends how close you are. As of the book every religious group would charge you. But with you being friends with them it might work.

But an NPC mom beeing all overprotective of her last child is also a fun train of thought ;)

As for starting wealth: Average.

Thanks for taking a look.

GM Foxy- I sent you a PM with some questions about a build. Wasn't sure if you saw it. If you don't like answering PMs, just say so and I can post it here. Thanks!

Thanks for taking a look.

I actually own a copy of the Animal Archive, so the huntsmaster would be no problem ruleswise.

But there are two issues:
a) you haven't given a rough idea what your character would be like and what are his/her ties into Kintargo
b) I've already made a preselection for five characters an hour ago. So going for a full build now might be a waste of time.

If you decide to give a character idea anyway in case someone else doesn't want to join, please take a look at my comments about the characters so far to get a better idea what I'm looking for.

Dark Archive

A while ago I built a Vigilante for a hells rebels game, he was a Teifling who lived in the Red-roof district, I might revitalize him for this if your okay with Tiefling...
A former Asmodian, wronged by the church and seeking revenge.

Grand Lodge

Ya I have been trying to Sell Jorum to a few different recruitment without success. I can see how people don't really like the idea, I want to try the Prestige class out since it is kinda cool in this setting.

I have another idea for a character more tied to Kintargo.

Added some personality and acquaintances, etc. Mostly to flesh out Salonius in my mind. Also yay :)

It's not so much the archetype. I didn't even notice until you pointed it out now. But to play that you wouldn't need to make Jorum a spy. A bard singing at the opera with political ambition would work too. Using the ability to bring people up against each other to further his career. And once the opera gets closed because Barzillai takes residence there, he got a reason to turn his talents on that usurper.

But with Meliandri Chastain-Aulamaxa the game already has a bard.

As tieflings are the third largest group of citizens in Kintargo, that would be ok. But as you can see from the previous posts I'm much more interested to read what he does and likes in Kintargo than his motivation to become a rebel.

Liberty's Edge

Hi Foxy,

I'm glad you are interested in Saul. I have time tonight, so I will dive into the players guide a bit more and make Saul more rooted in Kintargo.

I am always very open to GM suggestions and pushes on player history. My philosophy is that the GM knows the upcoming story and thus has the best perspective on ways to challenge and shape the PC while fitting it into the larger story arc. Once the game starts, I am very interested to see what you have in mind, and am happy for you to even create other situations in my past... after all, it's not like my four paragraphs are his entire life story.

I got no complains whatsoever. I am not familiar with this AP and Kintargo besides the few lines in the player guide so I'll take any advice. I really like the idea that Oratio had this life somewhere else, and went to Kintargo for a fresh start, just to find out that the Thrune "followed" him. I want to play him disgusted and angry (but not stupid or evil of course). And I would like the opportunity to know another member of the groupe before we start, that could help tied us together. And yes the Silver Star seems like a perfect place to discover the other adventurers and his new faith in Sarenrae. Do you want me to rewrite the background with these changes in mind?

For his job I think he could do a nice bartender or waiter, trying to gain some tips with his social skills (and/or his magic) with the upper class citizens of Kintargo. Does the opera have a bar?

You know, the basic game mechanic of PF is open a door, roll initiative, solve the encounter. Everything that makes this more than a game of dice is in the backstory.

And I noticed, this influences the game to the point where all my characters become that "Meh, lets kill it."-type. And then the game gets boring. Only if the characters have some strong defining background which leads their character to search for different solutions, and something around the encounters that gives them space to live out who they are, allows for writing an interesting and unique story. Preferrably with player interaction that goes beyond: "Let's flank that guy."

It might become boring too, when Salonius has watered the orchard every morning and every evening for 50 days in a row. But just the possibility that he might not show up for a rebellion meeting, because his cake flavoured peach tree had some bugs that he had to pick off one by one all day makes him a more interesting character than Valeros will ever be. At least from my perspective.

I'm pretty good at giving improvements to or pointing out flaws of original ideas. But adding completely new events to a character's past is a hard one, as it is your character. And adding new character traits with the past that caused it might change him to something that doesn't feel like the character you imagined anymore. But as you asked for it, I'll tell you if something comes to mind.

Well Peeko could probably take care of that, at a pinch ;) It would be a birdy breakfast to, but tact prevents me from using the phrase normally associated with such a win win scenario.

Sorry to see the recruitment close so quick. I was working on this idea, and wanted to make sure I had it right, and not just submit an idea that I wasn't happy with.

Anyway, if you could take a look and give me some feed back I would appreciate it. Please consider me for a spot if the opportunity arises.

Darrien could be a Hunter (advanced class guide) or Cavlier (Huntmaster).

Appearance:

On his way to the kitchens Darrien stops in front of a mirror in the entry hall of Jhaltero Manor. He places the picnic basket he was carrying down and takes a second to gaze at his reflection in the mirror. He smiles at his likeness, it was an open an honest smile that won him many a friend and disarmed many a lass. Darrien mused that while he was not yet 30 years old the reflection looking back at him seemed, not only older, but more competent or experienced then his years. He stood a little over 3 feet tall and was well muscled like greyhound, broad in the shoulders and narrow at the waist, and he carried himself with an air of confidence and the swagger of a veteran.

As Darrien continued looking at his reflection he noticed his eyes, they are same color of the sky right before a storm, but it is more than their color that draws his attention, his gaze appears knowing and penetrating. His eyes are set in a well-proportioned and tanned face which is framed by curly auburn flowing hair, with a small goatee, and tufts of hair on his feet the same color.

He nods approvingly as he gives himself one last look over. Yes, yes, it all went well together and brought out the blue highlights in his eyes. All perfectly coordinated from the light brown pants and the thick dark brown belt around his waist to the loose dark blue shirt and a grey cloak that reached to his knees. Impeccable, he decided hoping Alia would appreciate the effort. With one last smile Darrien concludes, as nice as the outfit he was wearing was he was just as happy that he couldn’t tell he was wearing a chain shirt underneath it all and that his sling staff was concealed under his cloak.

He thought, enough admiring yourself, you are acting like a maiden going to her first ball. Darrien grabs his picnic basket and heads toward the kitchens. You can hear him whistling a merry tune as he makes his way down the hall.

Personality:

“What do you think you’re doing in my kitchen dog master?” A melodic voice questions Darrien as he enters the kitchen.

Darrien looks up to see one of the kitchen helpers, Kelli, smiling at him. He smiles back noticing that the room is filled by several halflings. He knows right away the head cook is away by the carefree attitude of those sitting around the kitchen counter.

“Darrien, what brings you here this time of day second breakfast isn’t for another hour.” the familiar cook inquires, “Are you hear to partake of Milandra’s charms.” Milandra, another cook’s helper blushes and the others in the room give a quick chuckle.

“Probably shirking another task,” Chimes in Rab, as swarthy halfling with a sour disposition, who was assigned as a groom in the stables.

Darrien approaches the group and takes a seat at the counter top next to Kelli and answers, “Not today.”

“I wound up having to clean the stables yesterday because you skipped out on another task,” the groom continues heatedly.

“Pay him no mind Darrien,” Kelli interjects and smiles, “By the looks of things you’ll be wanting that basket filled.” She motions Mellandra to come over and says to her, “Be dear and fill this basket up.” She turns toward Darrien and asks with a raised eyebrow, “For two?”

Rab raises his voice interjecting, “Of course it’s for two.” He continues, “I know all about you Darrien, you’re an arrogant, philanderer, and the mistresses little pet, off on another dalliance while we are stuck here doing the work.”

“You forgot slothful and I have a tendency to talk with my mouthful. Also, technically, I’ am more of a womanizer than a philanderer,” he grins at the groom.

“And smartass,” the groom retorts.

“True, true,” Darrien chuckles. And continues, “Now friend, I’ll be the first to admit that there is a fine line between arrogance and self-confidence and that sometimes I cross that line. But I say what’s wrong with enjoying a good laugh, a clever joke, a strong drink, a willing wench, or a relaxing smoke? Some would label these as bad vices or excesses, but to me they add savor to our lives.”

“And full of crap,” adds the groomsman. “I’m tired of pulling you load.”

“Well, that was unfortunate business with the stables yesterday. Unlucky for you, but a lucky turn for me. And let’s be honest friend, a sturdy fellow like yourself can handle the extra duties.” He pauses and shrugs, “I’m afraid if didn’t do such a fine job of getting out of work I’d have no energy for my other pursuits, so to speak. Moreover, if I helped clean out the stables the grooms would probably lose their meager savings gambling with me and start beating their wives.” With a grin he finishes, “So as you can see the way it worked out is better for everyone.” Darrien concludes and begins to hum a slow melancholy tune.

Kelli faces the Groom and adds, “Now most people would conclude that Darrien is a rascal and they may very well be right. It is true that he is always willing to steal a kiss or a pinch, it is worth noting that he never takes more than is offered. Additionally, if they paid attention they would find that there is more to him lurking below the surface. The Darrien most of us know is gregarious and good natured and sees everyone as a potential friend.” She pauses while she stirs something in the pot on the fire, “Understandably, he might not be the first person you would think of if you wanted help cleaning the stables because he has an uncanny knack of slipping away from work. However, he isn’t doing anything we all haven’t tried, only he does it better than the rest of us.” With a soft chuckle she adds, “Nevertheless, he is the Mistresses first choice when she has a special task and when he is in charge of a project most of us follow him willingly. Most importantly, he is a fierce defender of his friends and cares little about what others think. It's not that he doesn't care about others but he believes that his well-being takes priority over theirs.” With a stern look at the groom she concludes, “Oh, and most importantly for you, he has a tendency to hum when he is angry.”

Background:

Darrien sits on an old red and white checkered table cloth in the shade, with his back leaning against a tree, at Aria Park smoking his pipe. As he waits for his companion, Alia, to arrive he looks over the little picnic he has set up and nods approvingly as he considers what he has brought, cold chicken, fresh bread, as well as several different types cheeses, assorted fruit, and a jug of sun tea. The onlything that could make it better would be some of Kelli’s grilled mushroom caps, he thinks as his mouth begins to water. He gave a little laugh as he recalls gathering the items with the kitchen staff and without the head cook noticing they were gone.

While he waits Darrien takes an occasional pull of his pipe, and watches the crowds gather in anticipation of today’s rally. He reaches down and pets Blue, one of his Lady’s hounds that he has taken a shining to. Tap, tap, tap, Blue’s tail thumps against Darrien’s leg at the attention. He pets Blue again and takes another pull from his pipe.

He was lucky he was able to get away from his Mistresses’ estate today with all the changes going on in the city. Opportunely, he used Blue as an excuse to leave the grounds saying the animal needed some exercise. Darrien was thankful that his position as Kennel Master allowed him more freedom then the other slaves. Not that Mistress Aulamaxa was a hard taskmaster as most of the household slaves were treated well.

While he waits Darrien reminisces about his upbringing and his life as a slave. Slavery was all he has ever known, when he was 8 years hold he was separated from his family, who were slaves on the Sarini estate. Lord Sarini was a harsh taskmaster and treated his slaves poorly. His household was one where the slaves were routinely beaten for the slightest of reasons. Fortunately for Darrien he was bought by the Jhaltero family who were known for treating there slaves well. On occasion he still gets word from his parents.

At young age it was recognized he had a way with animals and put to work in the stables. His way with people and animals eventually led to him being put in charge of the kennels. As Kennel Master he enjoyed the time he spent with the hounds and the freedom it allowed him. Over the years he had developed a keen eye for judging a dogs breeding qualities and had a knack for training the hounds. Darrien enjoyed his Mistresses favor and was often chosen to control the dogs on the hunts, or to lead special projects around the yard. And when he when he wasn't in charge he had an uncanny ability to get out of work.

Darrien waits he wonders, why does Alia have such an interest in these rallies and politics of the tall folk, doesn’t she realize how dangerous these things can be. Darrien shrugs as he remembers that the only reason he has agreed to come was to make sure Alia was safe, and with the growing crowd of humans she just might need his protection. Well woman and their fancies, he resigned himself to never fully understanding their ways. Nevertheless, he is prepared for the worse as he is wearing a chain shirt under his shirt and has his trusty sling-staff concealed under his cloak. Additionally, he smiles as he recalls the net and supplies he has hidden in the bottom of the picnic basket. He reaches down and pets Blue again, I can't forget about him.

He anxiously awaits for her arrival and another smile crosses his face as he imagines the happy look on Alia’s face when she sees his surprise picnic. His wait is not long as he see Alia and several of her friends purposefully making their way towards him. He is surprised that she is not alone, but he can’t help it as his hart races as she draws near. As she gets closer he stands up and raises his rich tenor voice in greeting, “Halloo.”

From the look on her face it is immediately apparent that she is not pleased but he is still unprepared for the tongue lashing she is about to give him. “What do you think you are doing?” She asks as she eyes the picnic he has set up. She doesn’t wait for an answer and continues, “This is a rally protesting the martial law imposed upon our city not some romp in the country side, or romantic interlude. Why did you think I invited you along for? For some silly Dalliance.”

One of her friends, a tall sallow looking youth, chimes in, “I told you it wasn’t a good idea to invite the lazy slip.”

Another plump lass chimes in saying, “Darrien has always had a reputation of being a fool and his mistress’s lap dog. It was a waste of time inviting him,” as she rolls her eyes.

Looking at Alia, Darrien sheepishly replies, “I thought a picnic would be a pleasant way to watch the rally and to be honest I am more interested in spending time with you then listening to political speeches.”

Alia turns red in the face and practically shouts, “Political speeches! I thought you understood, was everything you said a lie, do you even care about the tyranny and injustice our city is subjected to. Does the subjugation of Halflings mean nothing to you? I was a fool not to listen to my friends about you,” as she storms away.

Darrien mumbles, “It wasn’t I lie, I do miss my mint tea in the evening.”

Dazed Darrien picks up his picnic basket, turns toward the dog motioning with hand, "Come Blue." I do care I'll show them, I'm not some stupid slip, as he discreetly follows Alia and her friends, still hoping to keep her safe.

REASON TO PROTEST: Tagging along +2 to perception and initiative checks during the protest.
