"Not a eunuch, but rather his chastity adds to the force behind his swing. Laying with a man or woman is Zilchus' Achilles heel."

Nidhi eagerly sits on a cushy pillow. "Oh! My butt has felt no greater pleasure than your cushions, generous Muminofrah! It feels as if I'm sitting on a cloud!" Nidhi adds conversationally: "You know, I've been told angelic beings take naps on clouds." Nidhi genuinely enjoys being surrounded by uxury.

The young bard derives fun in teasing Zilchus. She focuses on the painting long enough to ask it a question: "What of Zilchus' faithfulness? What should be done to faithful servants of the Ruby Prince?" Nidhi clasps her hands together as if in prayer: "May he one day blissfully nap on the clouds with the beautiful Muminofrah. A most deserving reward for his selfless actions and his treatment of the Pharasmins!" Nidhi laughs gleefully, her laughter musical.

The evil figure speaks first, as usual, ”I’m not sure I understand the nuance of your question, but when in doubt, put King and country first, and you won’t go very wrong. All others should be put to the sword!” he advises the boy king on the throne as he eyes the questioner warily.

The more graceful good figure retorts, ”You would put everyone to the sword in time. Find peace in your heart and carry that to your question. All things come clear with time and space.”

The crowd, which had moved away a little to provide some privacy to Muminofrah and her new companions, turns when they hear new - obviously extra-planer voices. Those who can see the painting are impressed, and others look around for the source.

Muminofrah applauds the trick and concentrates… ”I have seen that painting before. You know Counsellor Abdur Raqeeb al-Shabazz! It’s the only way you’d have gotten the work! Oh, this is too much. How is the old rascal?” she exclaims laughing.

Neutral Human Bard/14

"You know Abdur? He's doing as well as can be expected from the dead uprising. He was our sponsor when the Ruby Prince opened the Necropolis, you know. Shall I tell you of our adventures?" Nidhi raises an arm questionly, her various bracelets clinking from the movement. "...Did you know that there's a dragon residing in the Necropolis?" Nidhi's eyes widen and she leans in as if she's revealing scandalous gossip. She discreetly tries to size up the crowd.

Wow. How do we have nothing from Ben, Cahal, and Flo?

Nidhi Aashirya wrote:

Zilchus nearly opens his mouth to violently protest the eunuch commentary and argue angrily for both his virility and the size of...uh, nevermind, Zilchus shakes his head and tries to stay focused.

"I'm no eunuch," Zilchus says, letting Nidhi continue her charade.

He turns his focus to the painting and the answers offered with by the devil and angel about what to do with those who dispute the Ruby Prince's powers.

He finds himself in agreement with the Devil.

Dammit Nidhi, why did you have to mention the dragon?!

Ben finds himself unable to chime in the conversation. Between Nidhi's quick questions and Zilchus brief answers, the scholar does not have anything to add at all. And indeed, he thinks the time has come to get to the point.

"Lady Muminofrah, I'm sure Nidhi will be more than happy to continue to delight you, but I find myself quite in a hurry. And this is not something concerning only me. We came here for a reason, as implied by the fact that we are trying to earn your favor. Please let me know when you think the time has come to get straight to the point. Until then, please excuse my mental absence."

Cahal, despite herself, is taken but the contrast of the scene. She feels a strong emotional pull towards the sensuousness she finds in the play between Muminofrah and Zilchus. And yet, the scene is constantly disrupted, cut short, by the others' mundane and down to earth comments and requests.

It is as if the two are trying to levitate and embrace their nature, while the others keep jumping up and pull at their legs.

She catches the arm of a servant and gets a handful of crispy and slightly buttery canapes and munches them with intent, lost in the scene.

Muminofrah frowns briefly as Benedictus tries to interject earthy reality in their discussions. ”Hush…”’ she croons before turning back to Nidhi, ”A dragon in the Necropolis, oh how wonderful. Do tell the story! Leave nothing out!” She cries, clearly enjoying herself. When Zilchus proclaims his manhood is intact, her left eyebrow rises considerably up her forehead as she continues to admire his physique.

As Nidhi is about to tell her grand story however, Muminofrah is interrupted by a slave leaning into her ear. She rises a little in her pillowy throne, and looks out to the gangplank. She winks at Benedictus, nods to the guards, and you see none other than the haty-a, Deka An-Keret approaching! Her frown as she sees you with Muminofrah is clear, though she hides it quickly.

”Deka my darling, thank you for coming, and so quickly too.” she smiles wryly at Zilchus, ”I wish you to give an official letter of permission to these fine upstanding citizens of the realm to access the Spiral Archives for…” she licks her lips and looks to the party, ”Three days. After all, I don’t want to be without you for too long!”

”You really must join me in the cool evening air when you’ve completed your musty delving, and tell me more stories - you can begin by speaking of this dragon!”

And with that you are dismissed, though Muminofrah watches you depart with some interest as she turns to more work, work, work as servants and bureaucrats push forward each with their own agendas. The servants bring more food and drink, while the bureaucrats bring documents for signing and other matters of the state. Muminofrah gives equal attention to both.

The haty-a turns to the party formally, ”Come with me. I shall give you the writ and you may begin your studies today.” she says as she begins walking back to her office, a handful of acolytes trailing in her wake.

Of course the day is already half over, but you doubt you’ll get another half so you’ll just have to make do. You could complain to Muminofrah, but you worry that might be pushing your luck.

Zilchus seems to visibly relax when the offer has been made, feeling that a lot of pressure has been removed from him.

"I appreciate your help, Miminofrah. I had heard rumors of your generous spirit. And we are pleased by your willingness to help us," Zilchus says plainly.

Zilchus glares at Nidhi as they are leaving, meaning to have words with her when they are alone.

Ben:

Florence's expression rapid-fire flickers through a variety of emotions as she struggles to come up with the right words. Anxiety, fear, sadness...and hope. For the briefest of moments she considers trying to downplay the implication behind Ben's words and behind her own motives for giving the gift - because yes, she'd wanted to return kindness with kindness but hadn't she also wanted to test the waters? This is the point in the story where she'd act all coy or maybe blush and let Ben try to backpedal on his words, pretend like she didn't catch the meaning behind them. Then, she'd lie awake the rest of the night pining and wishing she'd done things differently.

She shakes her head.

No. This wasn't one of Nidhi's fantastical, overwrought stories and she wasn't a princess or a damsel in distress or anything else but Florence Corvina, displaced healer from Cassomir. A wanderer without a home. But maybe now, she'd found an anchor, something even stronger and more binding than the cause she'd agreed to take up with Ben and the rest of their friends.

Heh...Nidhi really *is* rubbing off on me, isn't she?

Florence takes a halting step towards Ben and then another, gently - but firmly - taking his hands in hers. "No, you're not stupid at all Ben. If anything, I'm the stupid one because it took me so long to figure it out, even with Nidhi trying to help me along," she replies, slowly. "And even though I think you just answered my question for me without meaning to, I...I can't stand uncertainty. It's bad enough that every day is uncertain because of what we're doing. I don't need the added weight and neither do you because it's going to be death of one or both of us one day."

She peers into Ben's eyes, seeking the truth. "Do you really mean what you said just now? You feel something deeper for me than just friendship and camaraderie? Because if you do, I feel the same way. But if not, then...then we can just consider this an exchange between two close friends and nothing more - and that'll be okay."

Though the bit about having fought with Nidhi and Cahal over Zilchus' body elicits a rather horrified and embarrassed choking sound, Florence quickly moves past her discomfort and onto enjoying Zilchus' as Nidhi first brags of his martial prowess and then labels him a eunuch for all to hear. And Muminofrah's own amused interest only adds to the entire spectacle.

"You know, I'm really starting to like Her Excellency," she whispers at one point, smirking at Zilchus. "She's got a fantastic sense of humor!"

And so, Florence finds herself enjoying the brief meeting with Muminofrah much more than she would've expected to. Though she doesn't say much herself, she partakes of the offered refreshments and occasionally interjects agreement or her own bit of commentary into Nidhi's stories as called for. By the time their meeting is at an end and they're dismissed to accompany the haty-a back to her office, Florence is all smiles.

"Well! That went much better than I thought it would," she remarks brightly. "And I hope she was serious about wanting us to come back and visit again in a few days. That was the most fun I've had in ages!"

Cahal bows deeply as they take their leave, then beams at Ben and says: "Never thought I'd been thrilled to visit the library!"

Neutral Human Bard/14

Nidhi is too wrapped up in her own fantasies to notice Zilchus glare or be bothered by Ben’s eagerness to leave. I could stitch my own pillows but the materials would still be expensive. If I want a pillow throne like this, I’d need at least a dozen sacks of feathers… I could use the fabric from the bedsheets I nicked, but I'd still need more.

Nidhi rises from her pillow seat. ”Until we meet again, most gracious Miminofrah.” Nidhi bows. ”I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say we look forward to seeing you and your pillows again.” Nidhi moves over to Zilchus so she can elbow him in the ribs and wink.

Later, Cahal says: "Nidhi, you and Zilchus called her Miminofrah, but her name is Muminifrah. Mummy. No. Fra."

Zilchus, trying to contain his seething, says nothing in return. He continues to glare at Nidhi until they are well out of sight of the barge.

He spins and uses his arm to pin Nidhi to the wall. He is furious.

"You better be careful with that mouth of yours. I can take some poking and prodding...but that was too far," Zilchus whispers angrily, trying to contain himself. "That wasn't funny. You're lucky it worked or they'd be dragging your body out of the water."

Still humiliated, Zilchus sets back...gives Nidhi another angry glare. He looks like he's going to say more...but spins on his heel to find the nearest bar. He looks to get stone drunk.

"Ahh, yes. I was using Zilchus' pet name for her." Nidhi stares at Cahal for a moment before clarifying in a flat tone: "When I made the joke about her pillows."

To Zilchus, Nidhi asks: "Do you want some dating tips? She already seems to have an eye for you. I could come up with some elaborate story about how you'd be willing to break your vow of chastity just for her." Nidhi laughs, grabbing her sides as her body shakes. "Ahh... I wish a strong, muscular woman would look at my derriere with half as much devotion." Nidhi shrugs, "I guess some of us can't be as lucky in lo- Urk!"

Nidhi gasps and grabs onto Zilchus' arm that's pinning her, trying and failing to pull free. "Sorry, sorry," she gasps, "It was a joke. A joke!" Nidhi massages her neck after she's been released. "You're too serious, Zilchus."

Nidhi tilts her head and places a hand on her hip. She tries to recall what makes Zilchus cheerful but nothing comes to mind. Ben likes books and Stingy. Florence likes to help others and her cat Bynx. Cahal obviously loves her daughter. Me, my grandmother and fine cuisine. Zilchus? Swinging a sword around? Mispronouncing words?

Nidhi glances at her companions before stupidly following the irate Zilchus into the nearest bar. She calls out behind him: "Hey! What do you like anyway? Besides fighting and the Ruby Prince. Let my buy you a drink!" She keeps following. "Hey! Zilchus, I'm sorry! Let me buy you a drink!"

"Whoa, hey!" Florence gasps as Zilchus pins Nidhi against a nearby wall. "Zilchus, stop! You'll hurt-" she begins, moving forward as if to try and pull him away from the startled Nidhi. Luckily for her and perhaps all of them, she doesn't get a chance - in the blink of an eye Nidhi is free and Zilchus halfway down the street.

All she can do is stare at incredulously at the others, unsure of what to say. She feels a twinge of guilt for her own part in the teasing and mentally kicks herself; of course no man would appreciate being teased like that, especially in front of a bunch of strangers. As Nidhi starts to chase after Zilchus, Florence reaches out to try and catch her by the arm but misses. "Nidhi, I don't know...he seemed really angry, maybe you should leave him be for now!" she calls out.

"Um...Ben? Cahal? What do you think? Should we leave him alone for awhile?" she asks, turning to her other two companions. "Or at least make sure that Nidhi doesn't get in over her head?"

Before leaving, Ben thanks Muminofrah. "Thank you for your help, milady. We will not forget that."

The scholar then joins the group, clearly irritated by having to follow the haty-a as a procession of slaves. "I'm leaving. Take care of this matter for me, please. You will find me...At the library. I'll be waiting for you."

To Florence, in private, he explains. "It's better if I don't tag along. I still resent the haughy-a for what she did, and I hate her even more now that I have the certainty that it was only due to politics. She disgusts me. She ignore the word of a scholar and listens to those of Muminofrah? That's too much. See, I'm starting to get nervous again. See you later."

In the meantime, Zilchus vents his rage on Nidhi and turns on his heel, reaching a bar. Ben shakes his head and smiles.

He's right. I wouldn't have like to be ridiculed that much. He's my friend, and the last time I was angry he got dead drunk just for me. The least I can do is to do the same."

"I'm going after him," says Ben to the women of the party. "Be careful."

Ben enters the bar. He sits on a stool next to Zilchus, and stays silent for a moment. Then he calls the attention of the bartender. "Two drinks, please," he simply says, turning to Zilchus and smiling to his friend.

I'm with you, pal.

This is what I consider Ben's most coherent course of action, accordin to his personality. But if splitting the party creates some problem GM, just let me know and I'll find a reason for Ben to join back the party, perhaps worry about them because she does not trust the haty-a.

"Um, okay..." Florence responds as Ben also hurries off after Zilchus. Not that she blamed him at all - in fact, she suspected of any of them that Ben might be the best person to try and calm their irate friend down. But that also left her in the rather awkward position of being left in charge of beginning their research within the Spiral Archives.

"Ah, don't...don't pay them any mind, they'll catch up later...or tomorrow," Florence finally mumbles to the haty-a, if she's still within earshot. She turns to Cahal and shrugs awkwardly. "I guess I'm going to go on ahead and see what progress I can make inside the Archives. If you want to come with me I'm sure I could use the help but if you'd rather not right now, I can't really blame you."

Splitting the party is never a problem for me, particularly with PbP, though it can be bad for the party in some circumstances. That's up to you...

The party squabbles as they follow Deka An-Keret back to her office. She is surprised when nearly half the party is missing, but makes no comment. She takes out some special papyrus, made for the occasion to help deter forgeries, and writes out your permission slip.

It is clearly dated today, Wealday, 25 Sarenith, 4714, and gives you just three days including today, to access the Spiral Archive - a secured library. When she's finished, she signs with a flourish, and rests the document on the desk in your direction.

"Be especially careful to damage nothing in the archives, and of course, you may not remove any tomes or objects under penalty of law."

And with that you are dismissed and she turns to other work, clearly expecting you to take your letter of authorization and leave...

"I bleed for you. I step in front of danger for you. I have scars on my body that will last the rest of my life. AND YOU MOCK ME FOR IT!" Zilchus twists away from Nidhi, giving her yet another warning look. He storms off.

Zilchus seems surprised when Ben pulls up a stool, accepting his presence and the second drink. It's a while before he says again, such is the depth of his need to stew in his own juices. After about the third drink, Zilchus is ready to open up grousily.

"I don't deserve that. I don't deserve that at all. It's not worth it. We should destroy the Mask and be done with it." Zilchus spits out to Ben.

@all, not that it needs to be said:

Florence:

This must be the best day in my whole life. Or the worst, if she’s cheating me…

Any description of the vortex of feelings enveloping Ben’s mind and heart would not be enough accurate. Sometimes words just cannot express reality. That was a principle Ben learned in philosophy long ago, associated with iperuranic philosophy and the ineffable nature of the One, which cannot be properly expressed through words.

I…I still can’t believe it…

Holding Florence’s hands communicates a sense of peace and happened in Ben, as though she could infuse positivity in him through simple contact. Never in his life Ben had felt this way.

I…I don’t know what to say…,” he mumbles, unable to articulate his feelings.

I mean, I…Of course I feel the same, Flo…,” he whispers, his hands slightly shaking and his eyes still fixed on the floor. “I…I felt this way since the very first time I met you. And with every experience we lived together, this became stronger and stronger, until I was…I mean, until a few moments ago, I thought that I was going to implode from the pressure of keeping this inside of me…Everyone realized that except you.”

Ben laughs, not too loudly. With a smile still on his lips, he feels like breaking the tension helps him to express himself.

Ben now raises his gaze, and looks Florence into her eyes. “You want to know if I feel something more than friendship for you? Well, I…Of course I do. But it is not just something more than friendship. Is the most beautiful sensation I have ever experienced in my life, as though only by looking at you I could be happy. And this does not depend on your physical appearance, as human love tends to manifest in its lower forms. I mean…

Slightly embarrassed, Ben scratches the back of his neck. Saying things normally was not something that suited him. “I mean, you are also the most beautiful woman I have ever met, but I think that this depends on the fact that my own concept of beauty is shaped around what you are. It’s hard to explain, but…You see, for me there is you first, and then everything that goes along with you is beautiful. This is the reason why I feel something more than friendship for you. When I look at you, no matter when, I forget everything and feel like I’m the happiest person in the world…Is this so stupid as to sounds to me?

Ben giggles again, but this time he finds it hard to continue, although he would have millions of words to add. Everything he said was true. He never actually even liked a woman. Everything began with Florence, and the whole feeling of love was to him inextricably tied to her: his idea of loving someone could not be separated from the idea of loving that particular woman he has in front of him now. But the haunting voice in his head keeps warning him.

What if she’s cheating like the last one? Do you remember what happened? You lost everything. Do you want to lose everything again?

I didn’t love her. She cheated me, and forced me to do something I didn’t wanted to. This is completely different. Besides, if I give up now, I would regret this for my whole life. So shut up.

Love will make you weak. And you need to be strong now,
for Osirion!

Tsk, I don’t think so. Quite the contrary! I’ll show you! Would I ever do something like this before?

It was a matter of now or never for Ben. Now he gained courage, and this was the right time to risk it all. He puts aside all his fears and uncertainties, tightens his grip on Florence’s hands and draws closer. Then he tries to kiss her.

There is no hesitation in Ben’s attempt. Although unexperienced, he is resolute thanks to his feelings and the awareness that this is the only right moment in his entire life to do that.

No one deserves that, Zil. But you know Nidhi. She can be quite uninhibited at times, and sometimes she pushes it too far. But she loves you, like we all do. She didn’t mean to hurt you, I’m sure”.

Ben sips his drink and stretches. “I’ll talk to her. I’ll say her to stop, and to make someone else the center of his…stories, if she has to. But don’t take it personally. That’s what she does all the time, I don’t think she realizes she can hurt someone’s feelings…

Ben drinks again, then adds in a an ironic tone. “Did you notice all the times she alluded to my feelings for Florence? Man, let me tell you. It was horrible. Embarrassing. Worst thing ever. As though it was not difficult already. But I don’t blame her for that. She…She remembers me that no matter what we do, we should always be ready to laugh about ourselves.

Cahal watches with interest Zilchus as he elbows Nidhi in the wall. Without wanting to, she turns analytical and studies Zilchus' move with a critical eye. Overall, she's pleasantly surprised. The man has skill empty handed, though Nidhi should have been able to protect her throat a little better...

Then she shrugs, watches him storm off with Ben in his wake. To Florence and Nidhi, she says: "Right. I'm with you guys. We have three days in the fancy library. We shoudl camp there, if you ask me, bring everything, food, drinks, mattresses, the works, so that we can make the most of the time. Why don't we start by getting all we need. I can do that and carry it to the library, while you figure the paperwork. I just need you to give me a list."

As she gets the list and leaves to do some shopping, she comments flatly: "I can't believe the bookworm walked away from this."

”For… me?” Nidhi stops walking, a various array of Fabio Lanzoni fantasies running through her mind. Zilchus in an open, white linen shirt, standing on a pile of bodies, protecting a collapsed Nidhi from swarms of giant bugs. Zilchus riding a giant crocodile into the desert sunset with Nidhi sitting behind him, her arms encircling his waist. Nidhi surfaces back to reality, raising the back on her hand to her forehead: ”Oh, Zilchus! This is so sud-“ Nidhi looks around and realizes Zilchus has long left. He must be shy, Nidhi concludes.

Nidhi turns in a circle, looking for her companions in the crowd of people on the streets. She approaches Florence and Cahal: ”I thought I lost you two for a minute.”

”Ugh, more research? But Ben’s taking the night off! Why can’t we?” Nidhi complains. Nidhi perks up at the mention of food and ultimately follows Florence and Cahal. Nidhi shops while hungry and buys too much food. She even purchases a jar of honey, which she plans on polishing off by herself. (1/2 lb, 1gp) Nidhi is chatty and explains her future plans to Florence and Cahal as they gather supplies: ”I really liked Muminifrah’s setup. I’m thinking about stitching together a bunch of pillows for my bed. So many that I can barely fit myself!” Nidhi holds her palms a few inches apart to show how little space she’d have. Nidhi sighs, ”ahh, that’s what real luxury is like.”

Nidhi approaches the front desk of the library looking like she's prepared for an extended slumber party. She's carrying a blanket under her arm and snacks in the other. She smiles warmly like she’s greeting the librarians into the building and not the other way around. ”We’re back! We have permission from Deka An-Keret to access the inner sections of the library.” Nidhi waves a dismissive hand, ”Oh, and our other companions will be along later.”

Ben:

Though the briefest look of surprise flickers across her eyes as Ben leans in to kiss her, Florence does not pull away from him. Instead she leans in with an eagerness that startles her as much as it surely startles him, her heart fluttering so hard that it's a wonder it doesn't flutter its way out of her chest and out the window. And it didn't matter that neither one of them were especially experienced because this is wonderful, oh yes, and let's just forget about the Mask and the library and everyone and everything else for just a little while. This moment in time belonged to them and them alone.

When they break apart, Florence's face is flushed and when she laughs, it's full of giddiness and joy and relief. "I'm sorry...I know it's probably not romantic but I can't help it," she exclaims breathlessly as she clutches at Ben to keep herself from staggering. "And no, I don't think what you said sounded stupid! Even if it did, what do you think me carrying on like this is?" Maybe it was the sheer relief at having avoided making a fool of herself or maybe it was Ben's sudden forwardness that was making her behave like she'd had one too many, but as long as he didn't care then neither did she. "It's just...well, I guess I didn't really realize how alone I've been, until just now. But knowing that maybe things don't have to be that way anymore, well...it makes me want to laugh and cry all at once, if that makes sense..."

As she, Cahal, and Nidhi make preparations to bring all of their gear and necessities back to the library, a vague niggling in the back of Florence's mind begins to make her question the wisdom of going inside without Ben and Zilchus along.

"Remember how I mentioned that the inner sanctums were all supposed to be guarded by traps and the like?" she whispers as Nidhi approaches the librarian behind the desk. "The Spiral Archives are supposed to be no exception. Now, you'd think that if we're granted permission to be inside that they'd give us some means of bypassing whatever security they have set up, but...if they don't, do you think maybe we'd better wait for Ben and Zilchus before we go poking around inside?"

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Seems Florence might want to wait for the others. I'll say she says that at the desk after Nidhi asked for entrance so you can learn some things...

The always polite Nethyan library curator smiles when you produce the writ granting you access to the Spiral Archives. "Oh wonderful! Congratulations - access is not easy to get!"

When Nidhi mentions others may be joining them the curator's smile flickers, "I'm afraid that's not possible. We will open the Archives to the bearer of the writ anytime the library is open. You are then sealed in until the library is about to close when we will open the Archives again to let you out if you wish."

"We will do that each day you are granted access. If you overstay your welcome, or something untoward happens, guards will be sent in to retrieve your bodies or arrest you." she warns.

"Now, are you ready to enter?"

No one deserves that, Zil. But you know Nidhi. She can be quite uninhibited at times, and sometimes she pushes it too far. But she loves you, like we all do. She didn’t mean to hurt you, I’m sure”.

Zilchus bobs his head drunkenly.

”Women. Can’t live with them, can’t toss them into the river for the crocodiles,” Zilchus complains. Zilchus turns to look at Ben.

”She’s got a mouth on her. I guess you know that. Says all sorts of mean things, funny things, and mean things again. To others. In front of others. She doesn’t care who cares when she hurts people.” Zilhcus takes another swig.

”This is so stupid. I’m just trying to survive here. I have no place talking to MummyRot or anyone like that. Maybe I’ll just wait outside next time so Nidhi can make someone else feel small.” Zilchus continues to drink and bemoan.

Zilchus looks at Ben again.

”And you? You deserve better than that old whatsherface that tried to kill us. And Florence too. If she’s helping Nidhi, then she’s just as bad as she is. We’ll have to find you a new woman...someone who will appreciate you the way I do,” Zilchus finally lifts his head around to look around the bar for the exact the right woman for Ben.

”I bet you there is a good girl around here someplace,” Zilchus beer-goggles around, eventually pointing at half-orc.

”What about that half-orc over there? She has a tusk left. You like tusks, Ben? Green is a good color. Would match your skin well. And look, I think she’s bathed somewhat recently.” Zilchus continues to point out women that would totally be fine for Ben.

”Oh a halfling. You like them half’s, Ben? Oh look, she has pretty hair too, like Florence. I bet she’s fun. I hear halflings are lucky.”

"A new woman? For Nethys, I still don't have one, and you're looking for another one for me already?"

Ben giggles. The drinks are making their impact. "Tusks? I don't love...TUSKS...I mean...Tusks are good on a boar, but...I mean...They scare me!"

Too much drinking for Benedictus. Too much. "Why don't you try your luck with the halfling? She just blinked in your direction! How?! You don't see her?! Oh, come on! She clearly stared at you for like...minutes! Barman! Another round over here!"

Nidhi, unable to eat her recent purchases because of the mask, frowns. "Well, let's go find Ben and Zilchus."

Do we need to roll to navigate through the city to find them?

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

No, you'll be able to find them without too much difficulty. As the women were preparing, then visited the library, the men are well into their drink. It's about 1-2pm give or take, and Benedictus and Zilchus are drunk when Nidhi, Florence, and Cahal find them in a pub not too far from the pleasure-barge of Muminofrah.

Neutral Human Bard/14

Nidhi observes the crowd inside the bar with enthusiastic eyes. "I'll entertain the patrons while you two talk with Ben and Zilchus." Before the two other women can respond, Nidhi eagerly walks off. She finds a performance space and starts clapping her hands.

Perform (Sing): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32

Similar to the tune of Irish Drinking Songs (Youtube)

"Have you heard of the five orphans
They were forced to scrub the floor
But it was too clean and someone slipped
So now there's only four!

Have you heard of the swashbuckling pirates
They were the fiercest on the sea
But one got drunk and fell off the boat
So now there's only three!

Have you heard of the merchants
They retired from plundering the ocean blue
But one got jealous and shot another
So now there's only two!

Have you heard of the crazy couple
They’d do anything for fun
But one went diving without a rope
So now there's only one!

Have you heard of the lonely widow
Who had gold and jewels by the ton
But with no one to share it with, they left the world
So then there were none!"

Nidhi bows repeatedly, and approaches her companions with a flushed face. She fans her face with her hand but the mask prevents the cool air from reaching her flesh.

Zilchus shakes his head, still beergoggling around the tavern. "I can't do halfling. I need something with more meat on the bones...you know, something that you can grab onto, you know? Something with curves and some heft." Zilchus begins to drunkenly pantomime the right proportions in the air.

"You gotta have the right balance too. Right night hip to thigh ratio, like a fine blade," Zilchus instructs Ben on the ways of women which is so clearly understands so well when drunk.

Zilch looks again at the one tusk.

"I tell ya, Ben. That half-orc might be just the thing you need to break you in good. You get in with her, then you'll understand things about womens like I do."

Zilchus steps up to use the urinal. When he returns, he thinks he has a grand idea.

"Ben!" Zilchus claps Ben on the shoulder. "Let's go find us some women. I bet there is a nice brothel around here. It's on me. We'll get those other women out of our minds. No better way to fix things like this. Let's go find us some new womens. You can have first pick too. There is probably a nice gnomess for you too, if that's what you like. Good purple hair. That'll be nice, won't it Ben?"

Zilchus finishes his drink and looks very serious to get Ben to a brothel.

Ah, ninja'd. But leaving it. Zilchus is too beergoggled to 'see' the music.

1=Flo catches the brothel talk
2=Flo doesn't catch the brothel talk

Blissfully unaware of the turn the conversation is taking between her two male companions, Flo manages to spot them from across the room and slowly weaves her way through the crowd towards where they're sitting. When she gets close enough, she reaches out and taps Ben on the shoulder to get his attention.

"Hey, um, so there's a minor complication with the Spiral Archives. We can get inside anytime while the library is open but they'll only open it for whoever has the writ - so if some of us go in and some of us don't then whoever stays outside is out of luck," she explains. "So we'll all need to go together and..." Florence stops when she realizes that not only is Zilchus roaring drunk but apparently Ben is as well.

"Hoo...ah, I guess we'll definitely be waiting until tomorrow to go inside then." Florence fidgets awkwardly for a moment, still feeling guilty for her part in the earlier kerfluffle. "Um, anyway then, I guess I'd better leave you two to it. Everyone else is around," she gestures towards the rest of the bar, "and then we'll probably be back at Purusha's later, if you need us..."

And with that, Florence turns (assuming Zilch and/or Ben doesn't have anything in particular to say to her) and disappears back into the crowd, finding her own small table in an out-of-the-way corner. This really wasn't somewhere that she had much interest in being but someone needed to keep an eye on Nidhi and keep Cahal company too.

This day...I'll be glad when it's over... she sighs to herself.

Cahal takes a deep breath, but otherwise just glares at the library clerk, then at Zilchus and Ben. Things were not going as well as she thought they would.

She turns to Florence and Nidhi: "Right. Looks like the boys need to bond or live their teenage years. Once more. I say we go shopping. Make sure we have food, water, and everything else we might need so we can stay day and night. You think our climbing gear is up to par? What else can we expect?"

"In any case, we already bought a lot before going to the library, so maybe we can take it easy. But not here. And not with them..."

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Though there aren’t any ‘performance’ spaces in this particular pub, Nidhi climbs on a table and gives a show that few will soon forget - much to the surprise of patrons and employees alike. She’s greeted by a rousing round of applause as she steps down again to find the men too drunk to be of any use.

Cahal suggests a shopping run to at least be somewhat prepared come tomorrow, and I’ll say Florence and Nidhi go along, at least for a while. Supplies are garnered for a few days in the inner sanctum, and likely anything else you wish at the moment.

The ladies gather what’s needed (No need to make notes on this, but if you find you need some small item like a crowbar or rope I’ll say you have some for this next bit) and are well and ready.

You may, if you wish, push on to tomorrow, or continue to role play this afternoon and evening. Likely you’ll stay at the inn overnight, those of you who can find it, and be ready the following morning having lost a day of your allotted time.

Now go, GO!" he says as he weakly tries to make Zilchus leave the stool and reach the girl.

"Hey, Flo! How are you? Do you want a drink? I must say, although your image is quite distorted you still look beautiful, you know? What? They lock us inside? How, this is strange! Are you sure about this? Really? Really sure? Why don't you sit with us Flo? Zilchus...Zilchus thinks that you are just like the others, and won't believe when I say you are not! Tell him!"

Florence, and all our avid readers:
It makes sense, Flo…It makes perfect sense to me,” Ben whispers gently without letting go Florence’s hands.

A moment of embarrassing silence follows, while Ben tries to figure out how to arrange this unexpected event in the inner sanctum of his meticulously organized mind.

You know, I can foretell a lot of things. Zilchus always makes fun of me for that, you know! He says I always warn you all too late,” Ben smiles, the memories of the fun times with his friend helping him feeling more confident. “Well, I couldn’t predict this, Flo. Really, I couldn’t. And now I’m trying to explain this to myself…

Ben shrugs and tries to hug Florence. Then, he holds her for almost a minute, enjoying the happiness she breaths into him.

Do you think we…we are making a mistake? You know, with all that is happening with Osirion, the mask, the Sky Pharaoh and everything…Is this irresponsible on our part? I…I don’t want it to be. You know what? If we survive to all of this, I’m sure I’ll be rich enough to buy this place. And I will do. This room will always remember me of this moment. I will definitely buy it!

Ben laughs again, the art of defusing now completely in his mastery. The scholar pulls out a small diary from his tunic, and shows it to Florence. Only the cover, which is made in leather and well worn.

See this?! This will be the main source of my wealth! One day I’ll tell you what’s inside. But not today of course

Zilchus looks confused by Ben's refusal to do the sensible thing in response and go whoring like a normal person.

"What? You don't want to go!? I'll make sure your girl has all her teeff!" Zilchus argues passionately, if drunkenly. "I'll get you one that has teeff, or most of them, and good hair. You like hair, don't you Ben?"

Zilchus finally realizes that Flo is there, then slowly realizes that Nidhi might be as well. He shakes his head.

"What the f$&# are you guys doing here? Can't you just leave me alone? Zilch growls at Florence. "You here to help Nidhi taunt me again while you laugh about it? Well, I wouldn't do that again."

Ready to move on to tomorrow.

Ben:

"You know...that crossed my mind too, the other day after I'd bought your gift," Florence admits with a sigh as she finally extricates herself from Ben's arms. "There's a lot going on and...and would this be a help or just another distraction? Even if it's the best sort of distraction a person could ask for," she chuckles briefly.

"Maybe the best thing would be to take things slowly? There's still so much to do and there's still a lot that we don't really know about each other." She nods her head, indicating the diary in Ben's hand. "That little book right there is proof enough of that. And there's more that I'll need to share with you. In time."

Florence looks around at the small room that Ben had declared he'd own one day, at the diary he held in his hands, and down at the bracelet he'd let drop to the ground. Progress. Healing. They were both healing, in a sense. And she knew better than most that such things take time. And care.

"Until then, I'd like to take things a day at a time. And be happy knowing that you do care for me and I for you. Just knowing that is a good enough start for me, if it is for you...?"

"Um..." Florence stammers, holding up her hands and taking a step back in the face of Zilchus' still-smoldering anger. She wasn't sure if Zilchus would really take a swing at her if pushed, but she didn't want to risk finding out. "I'm just here to tell you guys about the library's weird rules for being inside the Spiral Archives, okay? That's all."

She sighs. "And for what it's worth, I'm sorry about earlier. I shouldn't have laughed at you. We don't see eye to eye on a lot of things, but you didn't deserve that."

"That's all I came to say. You can believe me or not, it's your choice. Either way, I won't bother you again," Florence continues, shooting Ben a quick, apologetic glance. "Both of you enjoy your drinks and I'll hopefully see you in the morning."

And with that, Florence turns and hurries away, ready to spend what's left of the day helping Cahal make sure that all of their gear is up to par and perhaps going shopping for anything else that they might need.

Okay, good to move ahead here as well.

Assuming that Ben (completely unreasonably) refuses Zilchus' very very nice offer of a good brotheling (paid for by Zilchus) wherein Zilch is promising to get Ben a nice girl with some teeth *and* hair, then I'll be happy to proceed to tomorrow morning...under protest. Ben, Zilchus won't always be this willing to help you find love in all the wrong places and strongly consider that you take him up in it.

Zilchus tries again to get Ben outta here now that the gloom squad has arrived.

Zilchus frowns at Florence, then wipes away some smoke that was causing his eyes to tear up.

"Uh sure. It was nothing," Zilchus grunts even though it most definitely was something. "We'll put it behind us." Zilchus might even not hold a grudge towards Flo about this. More likely, he'll be too embarrassed tomorrow to make a big deal out of it again.

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

The party rises the next day, Oathday, 26 Sarenith, 4714, day two of your three day access to the Spiral Archive. Some of you rise more bleary eyed and later than others, but you all manage to make it to the library opening around 10am. You approach, the library curators, and again produce the writ. She smiles and makes a note behind the counter as she says, ”Welcome back.”

The curator takes out some keys and opens a locked box under the counter. She removes a ring, which looks familiar to Cahal and Benedictus, and slips it on. She and the other curator, begin to walk to the rear of the library. As you follow, in your wake, a number of the researchers already there that day, stop what they’re doing and follow you to the Door of the Eye.

Cahal or Benedictus:
The ring looks very similar to the one on the pseudodragons finger. Only larger of course.
- - -

An immense, circular bronze door rises amid a wall of huge limestone blocks at the rear of the library. A single hieroglyph of an eye engraved in the center is the door’s only feature. One of the curators climbs the two steps which lead up to the door. She reaches up and presses the ring against the center of the eye. You see the two toned mask symbol of Nethys appear magically glowing in the pupil of the eye.

Spellcraft DC 15:
The ring just enacted the Arcane Mark spell.
- - -

As the curator steps back from the door, the pupil changes and Nethys’ symbol flares - burning away without smoke. The pupil physically opens with a bronze panels sliding up and away revealing a keyhole. The second curator climbs up the two stairs, inserts a key, and unlocks the door. The two of them then slowly swing it open. It moves surprisingly easily for the enormous weight of the thick bronze disk.

The entire room seems to lean in hoping to see what lies beyond. In the silence, a certain pseudodragon appears seemingly out of nowhere and lands on Benedictus’ shoulder. He is a small dragon, well tiny really, about the size of a small housecat, or large rat, but with a longer tail either way. The dragon is a desert sandy color - a little darker on the scale tips, with some subtle green on his belly. You also noticed something of a spike on the tip of its tail. You hear an excited voice in your minds, ”I’m ready, let’s go!”

Beyond the door is a small chamber containing only a set of limestone steps that descend into the earth, leading to one part of the Great Library’s Inner Sanctum, the Spiral Archive…

Neutral Human Bard/14

Nidhi, like usual, wakes up early. Because of the mask, Nidhi decides to stay in the ladies’ room to exercise instead of going for a morning stroll. She practices doing cartwheels, handstands, and backflips onto her bed, causing a loud creak. ”An entertainer always has to practice.” Sitting on her bed, Nidhi indulges in a breakfast feast post-workout. Nidhi casually breaks off a piece of garlic clove and eats it raw. Then, she picks up a plum in one hand and a hunk of bread in the other. She alternates dunking both into the jar of honey before bringing them to her lips. Nidhi picks up a second piece of fruit and eats it in between washing up and dressing.

Nidhi stands at the immense, circular bronze door. She’s placed the disguise spell to hide the mask but everything else about her is normal. Her white traveling cloak is dusted with dirk at the bottom hem and her boots share the same dirt. The blue silk scarf around her waist matches the blue ribbon her companions gifted her when they first traveled to Tephu. Nidhi pushes her long braid off on her shoulder and behind her back. She squints as she watches one of the curators interact with the door.

"Ahh, Pharasma~! What a good fate! To meet another dragon!" Nidhi claps excitedly and jumps up and down. "I never thought I'd meet another in my lifetime! How wonderful! So... do you know of Shardizhad who resides in the Necropolis?"

As the party progresses deeper into the Spiral Archive, Nidhi will occasionally glance back at Ben's shoulder to see if the dragon is still there.

"Here, let me check for traps." Nidhi examines the set of limestone steps.

Cahal is all smiles. Bureaucracy could spell death even for the greatest of warriors, her former husband used to complain, and this day, bureaucracy she had vanquished. She felt a little proud when the massive door swung open, probably because she never thought it would; that some long forgotten clause in some long forgotten policy prevented their success.

But no.

Packed like four mules, she makes her way through the portal, feeling as light as a sprite.

Florence starts when she hears the voice in her mind, but then smiles and relaxes when she realizes that it's the little dragon Cahal and Ben had told them about. She glances over her shoulder and gives the creature a small wave of greeting.

"Nice to have you along! Another set of eyes surely can't hurt," she whispers before turning back around to make sure she doesn't miss anything important - or walk into someone.

As they step inside the small entry chamber Florence peers curiously at the limestone steps leading down, though she tries to stay out of Nidhi's way as she looks for traps.

Zilchus doesn't say much in the morning. Nor on the trip over to the library. Nor at the library. He doesn't look at Nidhi much and that might because he's still mad or his light hangover.

He'll let the others research in the morning, thinking about possibly helping in the afternoon.

"Here we are!"

Ben is so excited that he barely notices the small crowd of researchers gathered around the party while the curators perform their "opening" ritual.

The Spiral Archive. I get to see it. I could well be the youngest Osirionologist allowed to do so. Father, if you are looking at me now, know that I owe this immense privilege to you. Please, watch over me.

Ben takes a long breath in and walks to the entrance. A small weight on his shoulder notifies him of the presence of an expected partner.

See, I always keep my words of scholar. Now let's get in, Ptolemy. Is that your name, isn't it?

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

”I am Ptolomy.” beams the little dragon, excited to see the inside of the Spiral Archives. Nidhi checks carefully for traps and, finding none, you proceed into the stairwell!

You climb down the stairs which twist around a little before ending in a hallway branching north or east. The tunnel is smooth and well made, while the ceilings are 10’ high and slightly arched at the peak. There are regular sconces in the walls of hallways and rooms, lit with continual flame spells for clear visibility. A few feet down the eastern tunnel reveals a portcullis, currently closed, blocking off further easy passage in that direction.

New map up for the new library. Benedictus, you control the Ptolomy the Pseudodragon.

Zilchus languishes in the back, letting others (like Nidhi) go first. He still isn't in the mood for talking and is happy to recover in the back.

"Huh...I guess we can't go that way yet," Florence remarks as they peek down the eastern tunnel and spot the portcullis. "Not unless the opening mechanism is down that way, which it probably isn't. On the bright side, that narrows our options down considerably."

Assuming that Nidhi (and possibly Cahal) will want to continue taking the lead to watch for traps, Florence follows a few feet behind at her companion's prompting, eyes open for any signs of trouble.

Ben scratches his chin thoughtfully, pondering about what to do next.

This place shouldn’t be trapped, am I wrong? That would be…for the blood of the devils, that would be mean from them! But I would not be surprised if it is. It might be interpreted as a text of dignity, especially if the traps are magic. Nidhi, are you able to notice magic traps? I know people able to do so usually ask a lot of money to adventuring groups to provide their services…

In case Nidhi cannot detect magic traps, and says so openly, Ben will use detect magic on a regular basis during exploration. In particular, he will make sure to check every new area for magical aura before proceeding. To speed things up, assume he takes 10 on all the checks needed to determine the school of the aura and the spell, for a result of 26 to both Knowledge (arcana) and Spellcraft checks.

In any case,” adds Benedictus, “I think we should start from the unlocked areas…Perhaps we will have to think about restricted ones later.

Ben will wait for Nidhi to move first, in search for traps. Then he will move behind her, using his magical detection if needed. I will not move Ben on the map now, but he will be right behind Nidhi, leaving an empty square of distance between himself and the Osirian girl.
