Zilchus smirks and looks up.

"They say that the stars here in Osirion represent the lights of those who have served to brighten Osirion's light. They guide and lead us even in the dark," Zilchus looks up, wondering if any of the star's light comes from one of his ancestors. "One of these stars might be one of my ancestors, still trying to guide the Lyghtlode line. We shall see if I ever end up adding my shine to Osirion when I pass."

Prof. Benedictus Dickens wrote:
So tomorrow is the great day. How do you feel? I’m the only one who’s feeling a little anxious?"

Zilchus offers his not-so-good smile, but it is sincere in its joy that Ben liked his book idea. He got the idea from the library, you see.

"Anxious? No, not really. Not certain there is going to be much danger or much to find. From what you've learned Professor, this was a city that was walled off. I don't know about you, but most people aren't that rich or exciting. The probably don't have much wealth...and whatever gear they had is probably rotten. If anything, we'll we'll probably find nothing but a few washtubs. A lot of the time, there isn't much to these, I don't think."

Zilchus leans back in his chair, again checking to see if his falchion is within easy reach.

"If this was a Pharaoh's tomb or the like, then we might expect a bit more? But here? Meh. We'll find what we can for Abdur, but don't feel anxious about it. And you should write about it as well...just in case we do get lucky. You never know."

Zilchus offers Augustus a bro-nod when he arrives to the table. Later, we will offer a raise eyebrow bro-question...'how did you make out with the bard?'

GM Euan wrote:
Do you do anything special that day?

Zilchus doesn't have much to do except finish is packing and being very very on time. He'll be at Abdur's shop in the mid-afternoon. He open to hearing any last minute advice or thoughts that Adbur might offer, but is mostly there to pass the time.

"Oh, I was born here! Wati is more or less, all I know. I mean I know songs and stories sure, but I've not even been to Tephu. Can you believe it!" she giggles happily, realizing you don't think less of her for being a half-elf.

"My father didn't stay long after my birth unfortunately. He, I think, still lives, doing digs all over Osirion. I never did have his wanderlust, but I must have inherited some of it as I'm going into the Necropolis, huh?" she says somewhat nervously.

"My mother passed away just last season, during the rains. She was old, it was just her time. I suppose part of my desire to enter the Necropolis is to to visit her grave site." She suddenly stops and looks somewhat horrified, "But don't tell anyone of course! We're not allowed to wander around at will in there, we'll be given maps." she leans in conspiratorially and her sweet perfume wafts over you, "But my team has agreed to a little side journey to visit her grave. I have a flower for her, that I've saved for the occasion." she smiles wistfully.

"It's quite brave of you to venture into the necropolis. You must have loved your mother very much." Augustus gives her a compassionate smile.

"I plan on venturing into the necropolis myself! Though... my reasons aren't as genuine as yours. If I plan on spreading the name of Augustus Volarius though I have to do whatever I can! Plus what's life without adventure? Augustus laughs playfully.

GM Euan wrote:
Lirgala laughs, a little embarrassed again, and suggests, "We should call it a night. I cannot have dinner with you tomorrow as we'll be planning our trip into the Necropolis, but perhaps when this is all over, perhaps then we can do this again? I think I'd like that very much." she smiles, and manages to look shyly at you through her thick lashes.

"Of course! My team and I will also be planing our trip into the Necropolis! I do look forward to the next time we can do this." Augustus gives his trademark grin and reaches an arm out. "Will you at least let me escort you to your room? I wouldn't be much of a knight if I didn't."

Zilchus Lyghtlode wrote:

Augustus returns the nod and grins at the group before asking about the library trip.

The next day Augustus just makes sure his stuff is packed and gears Maximus up for the upcoming lottery. He will wear his armor instead of the hot weather outfit he purchased. He will travel with the majority of the group to Abdur's place.

"Oh, you shouldn't have!" Nidhi is excited to receive any sort of present. She immediately double knots the blue ribbon into a bow at the bottom of her braid. The green ribbon, she ties to the strap of her undergarment (equivalent to a bra) beneath her shirt. "Blue is a color graced by Pharasma. It'll bring us luck" Nidhi explains superstitiously.

Nidhi helps her grandmother in the morning with miscellaneous chores around the shop. Nidhi then uses a sponge, soap, and bucket of water to clean herself. She doubts there will be any opportunities to bathe in the Necropolis. After lunch, Nidhi heads to Sunburst Market.

Nidhi goes to Sunburst Market to try to find a deal on a small satchel (Like a leather purse worn across the chest, big enough to hold about 2 lbs of stuff). If it's more than 3 gold she refuses to buy. She is willing to purchase a bag that is nondescript or features the spiral of Pharasma. Nidhi takes her time to assess the quality of the various bags.

At the early dinner:

"Abdur. You say that you're funding us but what does that actually entail? Are you providing us with supplies to explore the tombs as well? I don't have any rope and I don't have a crowbar." Nidhi looks expectantly at Abdur. "Shouldn't you at least give us a couple skeins of rope? The better equip we are, the more treasures we'll probably be able to bring back," Nidhi reasons.

Benedictus smiles at Nidhi, happy to see she likes the presents. And when Augustus lifts him up off the group, Ben wiggles clumsily like a fish, blushing in embarrassment. “I’m glad you like them!” he says with a smile to Nidhi and Augustus as soon as the latter puts his on the ground again.

The following morning, Ben wakes up with a squiggly sense of anxiousness permeating his feelings. He eats little for breakfast and even less at lunch. He spends the whole morning rehearsing his spells, with his nose in his spellbook. Anxiousness makes him focused. A variety of feelings battle for supremacy in the scholar’s soul as he repeats his spells again and again, as though preparing for the most difficult exam of his life―anxiousness, tension, a bit of fear perhaps, but also eagerness and curiosity.

Augustus:
You have a lovely time and Lirgala does indeed let you walk her to her home (in Wati), but no further. She kisses you lightly on the cheek goodbye, and enters her home. It’s compact, but well apointed - she is a good singer indeed, and has done OK for herself.

She notices you admiring her home, ”It was mother’s - I think father bought it for her when he left as a sort of apology. There are worse fathers I suppose. Mine was absent, but I remember him fondly as a child.”

Nidhi has some success finding the satchel she seeks, before questioning Abdur… Not sure what a fair price would be, likely a couple gold for something decent.

The party returns to Abdur’s, and discovers the mercantile side of his business.

The Mueaddat Almalaki Wadar Aleamm (Milki) is, as I mentioned, a smallish pub, but attached is a large shop, selling all manner of things from ancient Osirion artifacts, to minor magics - and even more common adventuring and mortuary gear. Abdur seems to collect all manner of things in various nooks and crannies of his expansive store - really almost a warehouse of shelves and baubles. As with the pub, he has a great many staff and even a few slaves, and there is not enough for them all to do. So the shop, while somewhat disorganized to the untrained eye, is at least impeccably clean.

When you enter from the pub, you are greeted immediately by one of these servants. In this case it is a young woman with a pursed look and bad haircut (image), yet clearly eager to help you. ”My name is Har-bai. How may I serve you today? I should tell you we plan to have some excellent finds from the opening of the Necropolis in the next week or so - but we still have some nice pieces now. If you will tell me what you seek, I can direct you to the right place in the shop.” she smiles as she speaks, though it’s clear she’s said this many times and her attention is wandering a little by the end.

But Abdur sees you, and joins you, taking over for Har-bai, who bows slightly to the man before moving off to another area of the shop - trying to look busy.

”My new found friends, welcome! I trust you have rested well and are ready for tonight’s lottery?”

Abdur laughs heartily, ”Well, I have given you mighty magics that you might continue your hunt no matter what you find and I have paid your lottery fees to the church. Would you give me more than fair value for the artifacts you find? Certainly not! And so I shall not give you more than fair market value for the goods I sell either, but you have a good point. You need some things in order to manage your delve successfully.”

He considers some little while, ”You should make some decent finds, if not in the first days, certainly by the end. I will loan you 100gp each, to equip and supply your needs. But you will have to pay these moneys back you understand. This is simply an advance on the first artifacts you return to me - agreed? I’ll even waive the customary fees and interest to show you we’re all on the same team.”

Basically if you accept his offer, you’ll get 100gp each, 500gp as a group, which we’ll remove from your first haul, if you’re successful of course. If not, it’s off to debtors prison you go - and Abdur must find another party to take your place!

Nidhi crinkles her nose. "I refuse to be indebted to anyone. I'm going to pass on the 100gp loan." I'm not going to be like my father.

Nidhi turns to her adventuring companions. "How much rope do we all have put together? I've heard stories about snake pits..." Nidhi looks away for a minute, hugging herself. It wasn't so much the snakes, but the idea of being trapped in a small space.

Before getting accepted by Abdur, Nidhi was brimming with confidence but now reality was starting to sink in. I'm a tailor. What am I doing here? No. No, I can't think like that. This fate is mine and I need to fulfill it - even if it leads to my death. Nidhi felt as if her emotions were bounding back and forth, like the ferries on the Sphinx. And as unpredictable as the desert rain, Nidhi thought.

Nidhi looks up, "Is there anything else anyone can think of?" Nidhi takes a deep breath and exhales long and slow. Nidhi gets up and paces, humming a song that praises Pharasma.

"As you wish," Abdur taps the side of his rather enormous nose, "A very wise practice."

"But at least tell me what you need and I'll sell it to you at last weeks prices. With everyone thinking about the Necropolis, prices have risen on adventuring gear. But not for you - eh? Please, see if there is anything you need."

"I think we have rope.. yes, yes we even have silk rope if you prefer the lightness." Abdur guides you into the shop, chatting all the while, until he finds a section with rope. Lots and lots of rope, in all manner of sizes and styles. He even has magic rope on hand!

Florence rises the next day with lingering anxiety about the events to come later in the evening. At breakfast she is quiet, lost in thought as she tries to think of something to do to occupy her time until they meet with Abdur.

Tephu can't be the only place around here that has books and information. Maybe I should pay one of the temples a visit?

"I think I'll go for a walk this morning and maybe stop by one of the temples in the city," she announces. "Maybe they have some books I can look at. If anyone wants to tag along they're welcome, but um...this is more for my own education than it is to do research for the lottery."

Morning Errands:

After getting some directions on how to get there, Florence makes her way through the city streets to the Midwife District and the church of Pharasma. She pauses for a moment before entering, hoping her visit won't be too much of an imposition considering the lottery to be held later that evening.

"Um, hello?" she says hesitantly to the first acolyte she sees. "I'm looking for some information about the ancient gods of Osirion and wasn't sure if this was the right place to check or not." A pause. "I'm new to Wati, for um...the lottery later and I wanted to learn a little more about Osirion and its people..." she trails off.

----------------

Well...I've already got some gold of my own to help but Nidhi has a point. Risking my life is a given but I didn't think I'd be risking debtor's prison by doing this too!

"Um...we'll probably find enough to cover that loan...right?" Florence looks at Ben and Zilchus for confirmation. "And we don't have to spend all of the advance if we don't need to. We're already thinking about rope, but what else? Is there anything dangerous we'd need to prepare for?" she continues, addressing her teammates as much as Abdur with her questions.

Zilchus flips off his backpack and begins to dig through it. When he finishes rummaging through the backpack's entrails, he pulls out 50' of rope, a hammer, and several pitons.

"This is what I have," Zilchus explains. "Also, some rations and some drink. Pretty much what I'm used to needing. If there is more we need, we'll work it out."

Zilchus also refuses the loan from Adbur; he wouldn't think of accepting such an offer.

But that was very kind of you, Mr. Abdur, and I ensure you this has not gone unnoticed. Offering an interest-free is very generous, and I thank you for that."

Turning to the others, Ben smiles faintly. "If you need rope, Nidhi, I'd be happy to buy it for you, in case you don't have the money for it. Oh, also, Mr. Abdur, do you happen to have something in which I could keep Stingy? He's my scorpion familiar, and I think it wouldn't be wise to let him exposed to danger. I know about some satchels spellcasters are used to buy in order to protect their familiars...Do you happen to have one?"

Neutral Human Bard/14

Nidhi shakes her head, "I think I'm just on edge right now." Nidhi continues to pace the room while Benedictus talks to Abdur about a satchel for Stingy. Even though Nidhi is walking, she's still listening to the conversation.

When the others decide it's time to leave to attend the lottery drawing, Nidhi stops pacing the follows the group.

Eventually, lead by Abdur, who is wearing layered desert clothes of a particularly nice hue for his skin. And also a sash across his chest, a badge of office of some sort or other not immediately obvious to you.*

At last, we can start with the AP… I hope our long introduction has not been overly burdensome. :)

The bustling desert city of Wati is near bursting with excitement. Adventurers from every corner of the Inner Sea region have assembled here beneath the hot Osirian sun to explore the tombs of the city’s necropolis, waiting only to be assigned their first sites for exploration.

Surrounding the participants, the public has gathered to observe the ceremony as well. There is a festival-like quality in the air, and numerous street vendors are hawking goods and refreshments to participants and spectators alike. Some merchants have even brought what can only be considered adventuring gear to sell as last minute convenience items to explorers, while others advertise that they’ll buy recovered treasures and antiquities from those who visit their establishments.

”I should have had a cart here as well.” mutters Abdur as he sees an opportunity missed. He shrugs, smiling, not worrying - caught up in the festive spirit. He buys a sort of dough wrapped in cinnamon from a competitor, smiling and not even haggling over the price. He chews pleasantly.

In front of the imposing edifice of the Grand Mausoleum, an immense awning has been erected between decorated pillars in the market to provide shade for the priests of Pharasma overseeing the lottery. Beneath the awning, two urns sit atop a table elevated a few feet above the ground on a wooden stage constructed for the event. The high priestess of the Grand Mausoleum, Sebti the Crocodile, sits behind the table, while two acolytes confer with her at either side.

Numerous adventuring groups stand in small clusters near the stage, made up of multiple nationalities and races. Most keep to themselves, but some teams engage in quiet conversation with other teams, mostly speculating about what they’ll likely face in the necropolis. You see a few teams that you recognize in the crowd, including the group with Lirgala, the woman in purple who argued with Abdur: Veriana Hypaxes and her team, the Four Lanterns: A cocksure band of Andoren explorers, the Dog Soldiers: a team composed entirely of halflings and their pack of trained Katapeshi fighting dogs, and more!

It looks like you have but a few moments to join the crowd before dusk. Sebti eyes the setting sun, waiting patiently…

Knowledge Nobility or Local DC 14* or Zilchus:
It is the badge of a former member of the Council of Sun and Sky!

The Council of Sun and Sky acts as the government for the functional, day-to-day operations of Osirion, and is composed of representatives appointed by regional governors or the Ruby Prince Khemet III. The council's chambers are a glass-domed building in the Black Dome between the Palace of the Forthbringer and a main entrance gate of the Dome.
- - -

Knowledge Nobility or Local DC 19* (same roll):
The Ruby Prince is advised by the Council of Sun and Sky, a 100-person legislature composed of wealthy merchants, important members of the clergy, minor nobles, and other individuals in the good graces of either the Ruby Prince or one of the governors who oversee the nation’s many disparate regions.

Each council member represents one of Osirion’s major cities and is charged with handling the day-to-day affairs of the national government, such as forging trade agreements, setting financial policy, allocating funds for the armed forces, and maintaining the nation’s ports, streets, and river locks.

Regional matters are largely left to each region’s governor. Established in 4610 ar, the council meets in chambers beneath Sothis’s Black Dome, and initially ensured that the early supporters of Khemet I would have the Forthbringer’s ear. Council members are expected to advocate for the needs of their constituents, but most spend their time pursuing their own agendas.

The pharaoh can revoke their positions at any time, although he generally does this only if he discovers council members enriching themselves excessively at the nation’s expense.

Five members of the Council of the Sun and Sky are elected to serve on the council from within the ranks of a second deliberative body - the Council of Liberated Slaves. This 63-person council, composed entirely of former slaves and the children of slaves, is charged with overseeing the well-being of Osirion’s slave population, but tends to advocate for the nation’s freeborn poor as well.

Outsiders may find it strange to elevate former chattel to seats within the government, but it has proven a workable compromise for Osirion as the nation’s ancient traditions confront the changing modern world. A badge on Abdur’s robes indicate he is from this group as well. A former slave.

"See? I told you Abdur as a good man," Zilchus says, turning to his companions, as he walks a bit straighter and more proud, happy to be in the company of those that believe in the Ruby Prince.

Zilchus looks at the crowds and the different groups, wondering how many will get in and what areas they might obtain access to. He offers his not-so-good smile, showing his excitement.

"Indeed Abdur! I have to thank you for setting us up at the Tooth and Hookah by the way! I had a pretty decent encounter because of it." Augustus gives the man a nod and then grins.

"I also wont be needing a loan Abdur. I have everything I need right here!" He rests a hand on the hilt of his sword and grins at the party.

Augustus follows Abdur with the group riding on Maximus. He tries looking as imposing as possible to the other groups, nodding to any he met on his brief adventure around the city the previous day. When he sees Lirgala's group he does try to get her attention and waves at her.

Augustus has no idea what the sash Abdur is wearing means but he does think it looks fancy and wants one for himself.

This is it guys! Time to get down to business!" Augustus gives the group a reassuring smile and strokes Maximus's mane while he waits for the ceremony to begin.

Morning Errands:

"Really? Thank you! I know you're busy getting ready for the lottery so I promise I won't take much of your time," Florence exclaims happily as she joins the woman in the chapel.

"Um...well the thing I'd mainly like to know...are there any goddesses known as the 'Queen of Miracles'? I...saw it mentioned in an old book I read once," she explains. "I can't really explain why, but I felt like I needed to learn more - about the other old gods too - but especially her."

------------

"Okay then, I think I'll be okay as well," Florence adds, figuring it might be best to follow suit with the rest of the group on the matter of the loan. "But thank you very much for the offer! I appreciate it," she adds hastily as they prepare to follow Abdur out to the Grand Mausoleum.

In spite of her earlier anxiety about the whole affair Florence had to admit that the energy of the crowd was infectious. She stands on tiptoe and looks around, trying to take in the sights and the other groups that are also waiting. "Look, there's Lirgala and her group...and those halflings, I wonder how well their dogs will do?" she chatters as she looks around.

Nidhi somehow feels safer with Augustus' words - and his heroic stance makes him more believable. Nidhi seems to forget any past concerns, eagerness consuming anxiety.

Florence Corvina wrote:

Nidhi looks in the direction Florence mentions. Nidhi nods, her interest peaked by the Dog Soldiers. "Will their dogs be able to smell with all the death?" Nidhi looks at Bynx curiously. What does Florence's kitten think of dogs? She hadn't given the cat a good examination before but Nidhi observed that the animal was rather cute.

Nidhi returns her eyes to the stage, staring at Sebti and smiling slightly. What does Sebti think of all this?

"Er...you know, I'm not sure," Florence admits, having not given the subject much thought until now. "Probably? After so long I think it'll just be musty and not...uh, bad. At any rate, it's kind of neat to see all the different people that are here for this. Like us," she smiles.

Something about Nidhi's questions stirs a question in Zilchus.

"How is that even possible? Professor...hasn't this city been sealed off for...uh, a long time? Decades? Or more? The scent of death should be long passed, right?" Zilchus asks, hoping the Professor has answers.

Thank you very much, Abdur!”, Ben says with a grateful expression as the man sells him the familiar’s satchel he had been looking for. He has some cool items too! Perhaps if I happen to get rich while delving these dungeons, I could buy something more from him.

Ben looks around himself, enjoying the festival-like air of the lottery. His eyes gaze at every detail, from the most majestic one to the most insignificant one. Among these details, somewhere in the middle between majestic and insignificant, Benedictus notices Abdur’s badge and quickly understands its meaning. Not wanting to make his sponsor uncomfortable, Ben takes a mental note about Abdur’s past and does not say anything about the matter, for the moment.

So many groups of adventurers, and they all have a name…”, mutters Ben, as though thinking aloud. Then, frowning he turns to his companions. “Do we have a name yet? Are we supposed to have one, Abdur?

Then, turning to Zilchus, Ben takes on a pondering expression. “As far as we know there shouldn’t be smell of death in the Necropolis. I suppose there’s a chance that a lingering stench of death from ages past still remains within the crypts, but I guess we will find it out soon. Anyway, Pharasmin priests are known for taking good care of the dead, and Osirion is renowned for the art of embalmment, all things that lead me to think that if the smell of death will be present inside the crypts, it will be minimal. But this is mere speculation, of course.

[bi]”She is a goddess of rebirth and resurrection, and the protector of the canopic jar that holds the deceased’s liver. She is also a deity of magic, both arcane and divine. Isis appears as a beautiful human woman with winged arms, wearing a crown shaped like a throne.”[/b]

”She is the loyal wife and partner of Osiris, and is fiercely protective of her son Horus. Isis is close to her sister Nephthys, but is a sworn enemy of her brother Set.”

”Isis is worshiped by sorcerers, wizards, and witches as a patron of magic, but also by mothers, wives, and druids in her role as a goddess of fertility. The vast majority of her clerics are women, but men and women both are initiated into her mystery cults to learn her secret and sacred rites. Quite the spectacular god.”

Prof. Benedictus Dickens wrote:
So many groups of adventurers, and they all have a name…”, mutters Ben, as though thinking aloud. Then, frowning he turns to his companions. “Do we have a name yet? Are we supposed to have one, Abdur?

”Oh, some have names, some don’t. I do not think it is vital. I left that spot blank on the form and no one complained.” Abdur replies simply.

All of you would know they do still bury folks in the Necropolis, but the professionals in Wati are known throughout Osirion as specialists in dealing with the dead, so there shouldn't be an overwhelming smell...

The ceremony begins when the high priestess of the Grand Mausoleum, Sebti the Crocodile, rises to her feet and looks over the crowd. Sebti seems surprisingly young to hold such a distinguished position, but she has a confident air of authority. After calling for silence, she begins with an invocation to the Lady of Graves, followed by a brief history of the founding of the necropolis - much of which you already now know.

She continues, “Let the lottery begin! Although many of you have requested specific sites to explore, we must leave these matters to fate. The Lady of Graves is a far better judge of destiny than we of this mortal sphere. The gates of the necropolis will open at sunrise tomorrow. Use this evening to prepare yourselves for the task ahead. Let these rules guide you in your endeavors in this holy place: remember how this came to pass, every slave’s hut is a memorial, and honor the departed. May you go with the Lady’s blessing.”

The church has mapped the necropolis and designated selected sites within it for exploration, dividing them into three pools, from the smallest and simplest of structures to the largest and potentially most complex. Each party of explorers is assigned three sites, one at a time, so that a group must complete its exploration of one site before gaining access to another.

This process wasn’t intended to simply be arbitrary. The church also seeks to avoid conflict between groups within the necropolis, the neglect of smaller sites in favor of those that might contain more wealth, and bribery and backroom deals with local officials to gain access to specific structures researched in advance. The Grand Mausoleum is dedicated to remaining neutral throughout the entire affair.

When Sebti returns to her seat, the two acolytes accompanying her each draw a wooden token from one of the urns on the table. The first token identifies the adventuring group, matching the token that group received when it registered for the lottery. The second token determines which tomb is assigned to that group. A single representative of the chosen group, Abdur in your case, is then summoned to the stage to present the token his group received at registration to one of the acolytes.

Once the group’s identity has been confirmed, Sebti shows the representative the location of that group’s first exploration site on a map of the entire necropolis. She also gives the representative a smaller, sketched map that shows the site’s location in relation to the necropolis gates. Once a group has received its assignment, the process repeats with a new group. It’s a long and somewhat arduous process for this first excavation as all the teams are waiting.

When the name of your group is finally called, Abdur approaches the stage to a smattering of applause and receives your assignment. Your first assignment is an actual tomb that predates the creation of the necropolis. He returns, joyful at the selection, and shares the map with you. ”Good news everyone! We got a tomb, an actual tomb! It’s the Tomb of Akhentepi.” he frowns thinking, ”Not a name I’m familiar with but no matter. Better than a dog house eh?” he grins.

Your first assigned site is located in the city’s original cemetery in the eastern section of the necropolis. The tomb’s location is marked on the map of Wati area 23. Using the sketched map, you should have no difficulty locating the site - and you are admonished from deviating from the path the church has assigned to the tomb, for your own safety.

Further, the priests of the Grand Mausoleum expect groups exploring sites within the necropolis to follow three basic rules, as mentioned by High Priestess Sebti the Crocodile in her speech during the opening ceremony.

Remember How This Came to Pass: The Plague of Madness was unleashed upon the city of Wati while religious authorities were engaged in infighting. This rule is a reminder that the necropolis remains a holy place, and those who engage in needless conflict and banditry are not only criminals, but accursed.

Every Slave’s Hut Is a Memorial: Every structure within the necropolis is a testament to the people who lived and died in the city. Explorers must not desecrate or vandalize standing structures and tombs, but preserve them as the memorials they were intended to be. Some structures may be trapped or decrepit, but willful and unnecessary destruction will not be tolerated.

Honor the Departed: The dead should be treated with dignity and respect. If the interred need to be disturbed to recover an antiquity or relic, they should be returned to their resting places carefully. It is understood that the ancient dead are often brittle, but there is no need for the contents of a sarcophagus to be summarily dumped on the ground. This rule does not apply to the undead or other abominations.

Failure to comply with these rules can result in, but is not limited to, expulsion from the necropolis, a ban on continued exploration, seizure of recovered valuables, and arrest and prosecution by local authorities. In practice, the church’s ability to enforce these rules is almost negligible as Abdur will tell you, in hushed tones. Most members of Wati’s city guard have no desire to patrol the necropolis, even if summoned by a priest. The church does send experienced priests and members of its militant wing, the Voices of the Spire, into the necropolis to make spot inspections, but it’s too woefully understaffed relative to the number of adventuring companies roaming the necropolis for this to be a strong deterrent.

The Necropolis gates will be opened at dawn.

Zilchus' own excitement grows and he smiles his not-so-good smile all around. He doesn't truly understand why Abdur is so happy, but is quite happy to pretend.

"Ah yes, Abdur! This is good. This is very good. We will do well tomorrow, I'm sure," Zilchus agrees. "The Tomb of Akhentepi, huh?"

"Ah! The Tomb of Akhen... Akhentupi? Never heard of him! However Abdur, you do seem excited so I assume we were fortunate with the lottery?" Augustus grins and then realizing he forgot to ask something very important, "Will Maximus be allowed into the Necropolis? I hope he can fit in the tomb! I told you to stop eating so many carrots!"

Augustus playfully swats the horse who snorts in annoyance.

A fallacious syllogism, but the people seem to have accepted it. Oh, the power of faith! Anyway, this is an incredibly clever political move. Chelaxians are used to think they're the only ones to understand politics...As I said a lot of times, they're wrong.

Ben listens intently to Sebti the Crocodile as the woman gives details on the lottery, and waits eagerly for their first exploration site to be revealed. When Abdur comes back with the news, Ben cannot help but exult, his arms raised to the sky. "C'mon! Thank you Lady of the Graves!" Completely oblivious of his previous rational approach, now the scholar Benedictus West Dickens rejoices as a man who had just won a bet in the arena.

Ben only realizes how much unexpect his reaction was when he turns to his companions, seeing how calmy they reacted to the lottery's outcome. Benedictus quickly tries to regain his composure, and clears his throat to cloak himself in an aura of dignity and solemnity.

Turning to Augustus, Ben tries to offer his view on the subject being discussed. "They didn't mention anything against bringing mounts and, or, other animals in the Necropolis. So I suppose it's fine for them. Perhaps, you should consider whether Maximus would be an advantage or disadvantage for you regardless of rules. I mean, who will watch over him when we'll enter the tomb?"

Morning Errands:

Florence's jaw drops slightly as the young acolyte shares what she knows about Isis. A goddess of resurrection and rebirth, as well as magic? It was just too much to be coincidence.

"Isis, Queen of Miracles...yes, she is. She really is," Florence finally responds, a small smile on her face. She quickly stands and offers a bow of thanks to the young woman. "Thank you, thank you so much! I'd better get back to my team but you've been a big help!"

Her question answered, Florence hurries out of the church at a pace somewhere between a walk and run and makes her way through the streets back towards the Tooth & Hookah. Although she still had many questions, her heart felt truly light for the first time since the day she'd woken up to her new life.

It all fits. It all makes sense. There's a reason I woke up again, a purpose. *I* have a purpose - and I'm on the right track to finding what it is!

------------

"A general, huh? Sounds like we're getting off to a good start," Florence chimes in. "Important people like that are usually rich and the rich usually have really elaborate burials, from what I've seen and heard. I bet there'll be plenty for us to find once we start looking around," she says happily.

"Oh and it might actually be handy to have Maximus along to help haul things back into the city," she points out. "We'd just need to find a place for him to shelter from the sun while we're exploring." Then, something else occurs to her and she frowns. "But they also gave us a specific path to follow to get to the tomb...that makes me nervous. If there's things wandering around in there, it might be dangerous to leave Maximus by himself. I guess you'll have to decide what you think is best, Augustus."

Knowledge History DC15+ Akhentepi:
The records from the period of the city’s downfall are sketchy at best. You think you remember seeing the name at some point connected with the military, likely a general as Nidhi suggested, but more than that is uncertain. If he has a private crypt his family at least must have been well off. However the church considers this a lesser investigation, so you wouldn’t be surprised if this was a second son or even further down the family tree.

Augustus Voralius III wrote:

Augustus playfully swats the horse who snorts in annoyance.

”They’re letting the dogs in so I don’t see why not. Some of these crypts are narrow though, so I don’t know if he’ll fit inside.” Abdur looks uncertain.

You make any last minute plans that evening, and, at Abdur’s suggestion, join him for a dawn breakfast at Milki. Over breakfast he reminds you about the wand, in case you need it to continue your searches. ”And don’t be afraid to make multiple trips through the Necropolis. Just follow your route and keep your wits about you.” he signs Pharasma’s blessings upon you and walks with you to the entrance where he bids you luck. He waives as you walk to the guards, surrounded by a crowd of people trying to get in.

You show your teams first token, and your group is let in. ”Don’t lose that or we won’t let you out again.” the guard jokes.

The sturdy stone buildings of Wati’s necropolis were once part of the living city, and even now could still be mistaken for apartments, estates, shops, or tenements if not for the faded paint and desert sand piling up in the streets. Separated from the rest of the city by high stone walls inscribed with prayers and blessings, the necropolis has an outward appearance of peace and repose. The dusty streets are mostly empty of life, at least as far as you can see - other than the other adventuring groups currently streaming inside, all staring at their maps and aligning them with Pharasma's Needle.

As you enter, you too see Pharasma's Needle (link) directly ahead of you. Many of the other team members stop and say a quick prayer there before slogging through the loose sand following their various maps. Lirgala waives from her group to Augustus. She’s got a reddish glow - flushed from the excitement of it all.

You also see Velriana Hypaxes (link) who’s place you are taking on Abdur’s team. She eyes you as you enter, and moves her team off as quickly as possible into the Necropolis.

Zilchus frowns (he's better at frowning than he is at smiling) at Nidhi's history.

"Are you sure, Nidhi? *The* general? It seems unlike that this tomb would be considered a lesser excavation site by the Pharasmooks. Might it be more likely that his site is a child or wife or beloved animal companion?" Zilchus asks.

"No doubt that we will see tomorrow, but if this is a general's tomb, that would be a great honor."

* * *

The next morning, Zilchus awakes early to prepare and repack the pack he's already packed thrice. He is anxious and will happily lead the party through his hometown to Pharasma's Needle (#14 on map). Here, despite is earlier angry words for 'Pharasmooks' (as he scornfully calls them), he shows more deference to actual representation of Pharasma, as if differentiating the god from her followers.

Zilchus gives a look to Augustus, as if sizing the man up. He looks at the Professor, then Nidhi, & then Florence as if thinking about something. And he looks at Maximus, the horse. He addresses them all, something he is loathe to do, but feels he must.

"From here forward we represent not only Abdur, but the Ruby Prince and his edicts. I know you all will honor the Prince's wishes and precepts set forth by the Church," Zilchus reminds. "I trust you to join with me to do it right. Augustus and I shall lead, Nidhi, if you would bring up the rear. Let's keep our eyes open on our way to our tomb."

Zilchus will guide Augustus to area #23. As he walks, he attaches his weapon's cord to his left arm. He walks with his left hand on the hilt of his falchion.

Zilchus is a native to Wati too? Nidhi should have asked him more about his background!

"I will happily bring up the rear." Nidhi giggles immaturely at the word 'rear' but she quickly composes herself. Nidhi is pleased to be going last because she feels less threatened by possible encounters.

Jharna had surprised Nidhi with one of Nidhi's favorite honeyed pastries for breakfast and Nidhi was still in a bit of a sugar rush.

Cheerily, Nidhi begins working on a poem in a sing-song voice. She tests different pitches and synonyms, trying to get the rhythm right. Nidhi is indifferent to how the others feel about her poem - nothing can get her down today!

"Oh~!

We five brave heroes won the lottery,
To go take Akhentepi’s property.

I hope the great Pharasma won’t be cross,
For it’s fate that made Ruby Prince our Boss."

Nidhi's singing is unpleasant to listen to. Perhaps it's the pitch of her voice or the corny lyrics, but it's obnoxious (and/or just plain terrible.) Nidhi is indifferent and sees her art as a work in progress.

The next day Florence (and Bynx) make sure to rise earlier than usual so there's enough time for their morning ritual before needing to meet with the others. Mind and body prepared as best as she knows how, she shoulders her pack and follows Zilchus as he leads them through the city and into the necropolis.

As they pause at Pharasma's needle Florence glances uncertainly up at the monument for a moment before making the sign of the spiral. She wasn't sure what part the Lady of Graves might have played in her rebirth, if any, but felt it would be foolish to not offer her respects just the same.

"Okay," she nods at Zilchus. Figuring that Ben would probably want to follow behind the two warriors, Florence falls into formation in front of Nidhi. She glances down at Bynx. "You keep an eye out too, okay?" she whispers.

When Nidhi begins singing, she flinches. The tune sounded fine to her ears but the lyrics seemed more than a little corny and out of place in their current surroundings - at least in her opinion.

Who sings when they're walking through what amounts to a graveyard?

She glances back over her shoulder at the young woman.

At least she's in a good mood.

Benedictus is excited. Perhaps overly excited. Perhaps excitement is the way my mind shields me from fear and anxiousness. What a wonderful engine is the human mind!

The scholar spends his morning rehearsing his spells and spellbook as usual, but instead of doing so in his room, this time he chooses to seat in the garden, avidly breathing the fresh morning breeze.

He also takes some time to chat with Florence and Zilchus, speaking about nothing too specific but delighting in their company, which in turns helps him to forget his anxiousness.

When the time to reach the necropolis finally arrives, Ben follows Zilchus’ wise guide through the living city and beyond, nodding without uttering a word when the Osirian suggests a formation. Being in the middle is the most reasonable option for someone not so able to engage enemies in melee, so Ben has nothing to object.

Once the group reaches the Necropolis, Ben says a quick prayer to Pharasma and makes the sign of the spiral on his left pectoral as it is common in Ustalav and to a certain degree in Cheliax. Spotting Velriana Hypaxes and immediately identifying her as the woman he saw when he talked to Abdur for the first time, Ben waits for her to lead her group away and steps forward, in order to whisper something to both Florence and those in front of her (Augustus and Zilchus). “The woman in purple. She’s Velriana Hypaxes. She had some kind of agreement with Abdur, but for some reason she decided not to respect it and turn to another sponsor. Since the first time I saw her I did not trust her. Too confident in her own skill. Confident people are dangerous. We should try to keep a close eye on her, or at least avoid coming into conflict with her. ” After sharing his bad impressions about the woman, Ben quickly returns to his place in the formation.

Nidhi - either is fine in this case. Artistry for the writing, Perform for the performance. So it’s really up to you. I’m fine with the way you handled it. :)

The group clusters naturally around Augustus mounted as he is on Maximus. You see other teams likewise making Pharasma’s sign as you enter, and most teams grow quieter as they actually enter the Necropolis itself. You suspect it’s more out of fear than respect for the dead, as several of the groups nearly run to their first location.

Your walk to the tomb is uneventful, if a little slow. Sand hasn’t been cleared from the streets, so it tends to pile up, particularly swirling around in the intersections making for slow going. Eventually you reach the tomb itself. (New map up. Let me know if you have trouble, cannot move your icon, etc.)

A rectangular stone mausoleum sits alone in what appears to have once been an actual cemetery. The trunks of a few dead trees poke out of the sand around the tomb, and a hot breeze whistles through their desiccated branches. A set of massive stone double doors is affixed to the northern side of the structure, beneath a facade bearing the likeness of an Osirian man. Windblown sand is heaped around the crypt, partially burying the doors that lead within.

The name of the individual interred within the tomb, Akhentepi, is engraved upon the doors in Osiriani, along with the dates of his birth and death, indicating that the deceased was born in 2416 AR and died in 2488 AR, 11 years before the Plague of Madness decimated most of the city. The doors are ten feet tall and made of solid stone with no visible handles or hinges. Sand is piled fairly high in front of the doors as well.

Knowledge Engineering DC 10 or Perception DC 15:
The doors are on concealed hinges and swing outward. There are also telltale traces of mortar along the seams and jamb that has since crumbled or been chipped away, indicating that the doors were meant to be sealed permanently and not intended to be opened again. There are signs of a crowbar or similar tool having been inserted between the doors at some point.

Here we are...Come on, Ben, you can do it!

Benedictus' breath is much slower and deep as he stares at the mausoleum. His clever eyes analyze every detail of the building. Nothing out of place, at least from the outside.

Trying to find the courage, Ben looks his allies into the eye, and, to his surprise, he finds it. Who would have thought it? I’m growing attached to them. Ben smiles and takes a deep breath. Beware! There’s a reason why the word ’bond‘ means both an emotional connection and a constraint, warns him a voice in his conscience. Ben shakes his head, dismissing the warning voice. I must focus, no time to meditate on existence and its meaning now. Shut up, conscience, I need my brain now!

Suddenly, as though pushing back the voice of his conscience had really helped him to focus on the situation, Ben notices a few details about the mausoleum’s entrance and quickly shares them with his companions, keeping his voice low out of both fear and respect for the Necropolis. “The doors are on concealed hinges. They swing outward, despite their look.”. Ben squints his eyes. “Also, I think the doors were meant to be sealed permanently. Look there. You see those traces of mortar along the seams and jamb? Someone tried to seal off this place forever, and for sure it was not intended to be opened again.

Ben takes another breath, his anxiousness washing away with every words he utters. “Moreover, I think we’re not the first who tried to explore this mausoleum. See that crowbar-like tool, over there? From the look of it, seems like whoever tried to infiltrate the crypt has failed. We’re still the first ones to explore the tomb with an official permission to do so, I think.

After sharing the valuable information with his teammates, Ben shrugs and closes his eyes. His mind focuses on one of the spells he has memorized while he speaks some arcane words in Ancient Osiriani. Suddenly, four glowing spheres of light materialise above the scholar’s head. “We’re going to need a way to see within the crypt. It should be dark inside”, explains Benedictus.

Nidhi stops singing when she sees Benedictus whispering to the others and excluding her. She tries to listen in.

Unable to hear, Nidhi shouts: Hey! What are you all whispering about? Nidhi crosses her arms annoyed. ”If you all even think about locking me in a tomb for good laugh…” Nidhi half-jokes but stops because she can’t think of a punchline. Nidhi wonders how loudly she would have to scream in order to be found inside a tomb. She thinks she probably wouldn’t be able to yell loud enough.

Nidhi then observes Benedictus speak some words and four glowing spheres of light materialize above Benedictus’ head. Nidhi pouts. Are these orbs of light what he was whispering about? Probably not.

------

After a few minutes - if no explanation about the whispering is given - Nidhi's mind begins to race as she overthinks. Maybe Benedictus is scheming something. Maybe he plans on betraying Abdur and stealing the relics to smuggle out of Wati. Maybe he's secretly involved in the Black Market. Nidhi's eyes widen. Maybe he's the leader of some thieves' guild and "Professor" is just a codename for "Boss." ...Although he doesn't look like he'd be a thief... but maybe that's his angle!

Nidhi eyes Benedictus up and down. I'd better watch him closely. Maybe this a test from Pharasma to assess my faith.

Realizing Nidhi is staring at him, Ben at first reacts blushing awkwardly, his mind entirely focused on the mausoleum. Although feeling uncomfortable under the girl's gaze, Ben tries to ignore it, but the Nidhi turns to him he can't help but stare at her wide-eyed, unable to understand the reason why she's asking about those sort of things right now.

Scratching the back of his head as he's used to do when embarassed, Ben offers Nidhi an awkward smile. "I...Y-Yes, I have a family, but...well...no, I wouldn't bet they're waiting for me to come back home. You know, that's not my natural family, and although I grew up among them I was never actually one of them..."

Ben looks around, desperately invoking for help to his companions. "And I don't have many friends either, at that..."

Realizing no one will get him out of the embarassing situation, Ben shrugs and sighs. "Egorian. I'm from Egorian, although I was born in Osirion and raised in Westcrown." His tone slightly shifts to a sharp one as he says so, but only slightly.

Turning to the others and hoping Nidhi won't insist on his personal story, Ben points to the door. "Shall we open it? Augustus? Zilchus? Anyone?" His tone is now frantic and a little fearful, as though Ben was trying to prevent Nidhi from asking more questions about his past. Without even realizing it, Ben is not whispering anymore.

"Not your natural family? Are they an occupational family?" Nidhi narrows her eyes a little and raises the pitch of her voice.

Not many friends, eh? I wonder if that's because he killed most of them. Egorian... sounds like the name of a city with a lot of sketchy business practices. Perfect for a Lord of Thieves.

Nidhi doesn't perceive Benedictus as anxious (unless he wants her to.)

Prof. Benedictus Dickens wrote:
"Shall we open it? Augustus? Zilchus? Anyone?"

"So your family" Nidhi says 'family' slowly, "Where are they stationed right now?" Perhaps on a boat, prepared for a quick escape with Wati relics. Benedictus did ride on a ferry recently. He probably has great sea legs. Maybe he's a pirate-lord-master thief!

Although their passage through the empty streets hadn't been completely devoid of sound, Florence still nearly jumps out of her skin when Nidhi begins yelling from behind her. "Ye gods!" she gasps as she turns around. "Don't scare me like that! Ben was just explaining that that woman with the tacky hat was supposed to be working for Abdur but their deal fell through for some reason. She sounds like someone we probably don't want to cross, if we can help it. That's all," she explains.

Once they reach the tomb and Ben gives a quick explanation of how the doors are supposed to work, Florence eyes them thoughtfully. "If there's mortar in the cracks maybe we can chip the rest of it out and loosen them enough to pull the doors open?" she suggests. "Or maybe we can just...er..." her voice trails off as she gives Nidhi a puzzled look.

What's with the sudden interest in Ben's family? He doesn't sound too happy about all the questions.

"Not that I don't want to know more about everyone, but maybe we'd better save the small talk until later," she says gently. "Concentration is key when you're doing anything that might require a steady hand or keen eyes. There'll be plenty of time to chat later, like at dinner."

Nidhi, feel free to accept or reject Flor's explanation for the whispering as you see fit!

Zilchus takes a moment to feel around the edges of the door, confirming what the Professor had pointed out. He hears the jabbering behind him, but realizes that it's up to him to actually get the door open.

Zilchus takes a moment to dig the sand away from the door.

"Professor, is it worth sketching the door for future reference? I mean, if this is the beginning of *something* this door is the first highlight," Zilchus says as he works.

"Hmmm..."

When others are ready, Zilchus will pull open the door.

Zilchus tries to find purchase, but there are no handles. Further, as the door opens out, the sand is acting as a barrier.

You suspect a crowbar will help, but it may take several people, working together, to get the door open - and that only after the sand is shifted. Anybody bring a shovel?

Nidhi crosses her arms and stares at Benedictus, expecting a response to her question regarding his family.

She respects Florence's attempt to defuse the situation but she's still suspicious of Benedictus.

-------

Nidhi observes Zilchus try the door and sees sand blocking it. (If a shovel is required, I assume the pile of sand is obvious.)

"I don't have a shovel or anything to remove the sand. I guess we could use our hands to dig," Nidhi suggests.

If nobody produces a shovel or provides a better solution, Nidhi gets on her knees and starts pulling sand away from the entrance with cupped hands.

"A shovel...? Oh...I guess that would help, if we had one of those," Florence responds sheepishly. "It never even occurred to me."

She begins rolling up her sleeves. "Guess we'll be getting a bit of a workout then..."

Nidhi wrote:
"Isn't Maxiumus holding a lot of gear? I think he should come along. I want to see your war horse in action, Augustus!"

"Yes, he typically holds a majority of my gear so that I'm less burdened in combat! It's quite a sight to see us working together though. I hope you'll all be fortunate enough to witness it!" Augustus pats Maximus on the head as he says this, the horse looking pleased at the compliment.

"Seems like a decent enough plan to me! Augustus keeps his hand on the hilt of his sword as they travel through the tomb taking care to keep Maximus going at a slower pace for the others.

Zilchus wrote:
"You okay, Augustus?" Zilchus asks.

"Indeed! I've just been focusing on the catacombs. This is an amazing experience! It will definitely become one of the more exciting stories I have to tell, and that's saying something!" Augustus grins at Zilchus as he says this trying to portray confidence.

As Zilchus tries to open the door Augustus dismounts and approaches him. "It seems the sand is getting in the way! Maybe if we pull on the door together we can get it open far enough for us to enter! Aside from that I don't have a shovel on me so digging might be a bit of a pain." Augustus starts flexing his fingers in anticipation of opening the door but waits until Zilchus and the others reply before trying anything.

Zilchus will begin to dig, joining others in the job. If it's just sand, then we should be able to clear it without a shovel, but if it's specifically is hard packed and needs a shovel, Zilchus ask Augustus, perhaps riding upon Maximus, to go buy one while the rest of us continue to work.

If and when the sand is out of the way, Zilchus will assist Augustus in opening the doors.

Take 10 to aid: 13 str.

"Yes, i can go buy a shovel if we really need one. It might actually be a good idea in case we run into another situation like this one!"

Augustus will wait to see if a shovel is necessary staying near Maximus and keeping his hand on his weapon.

If the sand is cleared without a shovel then Augustus will try to open the doors with Zilchus's help.

Can you take 10 to aid someone else?

Strength: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

If Zilchis is allowed to help me by taking 10 add a +2 to the die roll.

"No, it's just that...they adopted me. Or perhaps I should say that my father, Mr. Charles West Dickens, adopted me. His wife never liked me. So when he died I decided to leave our vira, since I was not welcome there...especially since my brother was born..." Remembering those experiences makes Ben feel a little sorrow.

"They're in Westcrown", Ben answers, quite dryly. "I don't know why you're so interested in my past, Nidhi, but may I suggest you talk about that later? I'll be happy to provide you with all the details you seek. Now, please, let's try to stay focused on how to open this door."

Benedictus turns his attention to Zilchus. "Good idea!" He pulls out his diary from his backpack along with his scrivener's set and starts drawing a rough sketch of the door, complete with handwritten side notes. When he's done, Ben looks at his companions.

"Mind if I help you from a distance?", says the scholar, turning to Zilchus and Augustus. Then he speaks some arcane words and points his index finger in the direction of the sand. Moving his finger up and down, Ben slowly causes a certain amount of sand to be removed, as though using an invisible shovel.

Ben casts prestidigitation several times in order to help his allies in removing the sand. It can slowly lift 1 pound of material.

Nidhi:
If you want to ‘look natural’ when you’re not - that’s a Bluff check. Perception is something you do to others, Bluff is somehing you do to hide your own thoughts/feelings.

Zilchus, Augustus is correct, you cannot take-10 when aiding another (link).

Prestidigitation lasts an hour when cast, so you only need one casting, but several uses.

The part gets on their hands and knees and scrapes the sand from the door. After an hour's sweaty effort in the blazing morning sun (well excepting Benedictus who helps from a nearby shady patch), the doorway is clear, enough, to begin pulling. Maximus plods the ground, standing in the shade of the building.

Augustus grabs what he can of the door and heaves! Alas, he cannot find suitable hand holds, and the door remains stuck. Perhaps with the aid of a crowbar… or with more assistance scratching at the surface of the stone.

You can take 20 on this check if you wish to try it. To get aid while taking-20 is a little tricky, but we can hand wave a few tries if you’d like to go this route.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"Damn! This insufferable door wont budge! Does it not know who I am?" Augustus looks a bit flustered as it becomes apparent he gave the attempt all of his strength. Red in the face he turns to the others, "Watch out everyone! This door will not make a fool of me!"

While Augustus attempts to open the door Maximus gets a bit restless not liking his master being in a poor mood. The horse snorts at Augustus as a form of encouragement.

Gritting his teeth as he puts all his strength into opening the door Augustus hears the snort and replies with effort, "Yes Maximus.... I wont.....let this door.... tarnish... our... names!"

Augustus will take 20 to force the door open. 20 + 3 = 23
