Out of combat!
So I think you guys wanted to wait for Rissi to return before going to the final fight, right? That's fine with me, I don't want anyone to miss out.
However, I'm available to post right now but things are only going to get harder for me as we wait longer; I'll be traveling again around November 13 and then we'll hit the Thanksgiving holidays, and then I'll be in either Florida or Hawaii for most of December, then in Florida again for the first half of January. Since we're so close I'll make an effort to post as often as possible even if I'm traveling but it will still be a little slow.
Sealman Alerteyes |
Miana is out right now anyways until the 5th. So that buys Rissi another week.
I'm fine waiting for a bit. We can talk about continuing in another week or so, unless we get any updates from Rissi before then.
Lucian Arvandru |
I agree completely with Seal. In the meantime let's deal with the healing.
Lucian politely asks the azata to deal with his companions' wounds.
The Azata has cure light wounds at will, so that should do it.
Miana, Champion of Irori |
"So the final battle is almost here. I have to say, I never thought that our chance meeting in Sandpoint would lead to this, a battle against an ten-millenia old evil. I am truly grateful that Irori brought me along this path."
EndlessForms |
Ok, I'm back from my trip. Still haven't heard from Rissi in a really long time but I'll set up the final fight and then we can decide how to proceed.
Rissi and Lucian work together studying the immense gold globe, which they determine is a powerful magical artifact known as an anima focus—the magical link between this world and a runewell hidden within a demiplane known as The Eye of Avarice.
They determine that whoever steps onto the glowing platform atop the anima focus can be transported to the Eye of Avarice by touching the fire; however, this is quite a harsh and shocking process. A magical link between the globe and the party's dominant weapons provides a safer link, as the dominant weapons can open a portal which will remain open for at least a little while to allow safe transport.
Rissi and Lucian determine, however, that this is likely a one-way transport and returning will require plane shift, gate, or some similar magical expertise.
Sheltered from the apocalypse of Earthfall, the fall of the empire of Thassilon, and from the very advance of time itself, the pocket dimension known as the Eye of Avarice floats in a sphere of reality wedged between the Material Plane and the nightmare realm of Leng. This demiplane features an endless hurricane of churning fire, with a relatively tiny sphere of safety lodged in its center—this is the eye itself, and is where Karzoug has spent 10,000 years in stasis, waiting to rise again....
You appear in the Eye of Avarice on a stone platform. Numerous red-hot pillars of gold rise from the fires below in the Eye of Avarice.
A character who ends her turn in a square adjacent to one of these pillars takes 1d6 points of fire damage—contact with a pillar deals 3d6 points of fire damage.
There are balconies above supported by chains attached to the pillars—no walls extend down to the fires below from these balconies. Despite their precarious appearance, they can support any weight upon them. Each balcony is 150 feet above the fires below.
The walls surrounding the extravagant throne are decorated with countless books and workspaces. Standing in front of the throne is the Runelord himself, Karzoug patiently waiting for your entrance with a look of self-assured determination on his face.
A rune giant and two storm giants stand to either side of Karzoug and above on the balcony to the left a full-grown blue dragon perches, ready to pounce down on the intruders.
"Welcome to the rise of Thassilon, friends. You shall be the first victims in the reinstatement of my glory and I regret that your lives will quickly be forgotten by the march of history."

Lucky you guys!
As Karzoug's hands fly flaster than time should allow, a colorful wall appears in front of his throne to block your progress.
I don't think this will ever apply but: Any other creature with less than 8 HD that is within 20 feet of the wall is blinded by the colors for 2d4 rounds if it looks at the wall.
The wall shines red when he first creates it but turns to orange as Karzoug covers himself with a globe of invulnerability and time turns back to normal.
Obviously copying a table on here doesn't work well but hopefully you can figure out what means what:
Order Color Effect of Color Negated By
1st Red Stops nonmagical ranged weapons. Deals 20 points of fire damage (Reflex half). Cone of cold
2nd Orange Stops magical ranged weapons. Deals 40 points of acid damage (Reflex half). Gust of wind

4th Green Stops breath weapons. Poison (frequency: 1/rd for 6 rd.; init. effect: death, sec. effect: 1 Con/rd.; cure 2 consecutive Fort saves). Passwall
5th Blue Stops divination and mental attacks. Turned to stone (Fortitude negates). Magic missile

7th Violet Energy field destroys all objects and effects.* Creatures sent to another plane (Will negates). Dispel magic or greater dispel magic

Sorry, I missed the question about teleport and had to look into it a bit. It seems that the sixth and seventh layers of the prismatic wall prevent teleport and similar effects:

As far as I can see, he can choose to walk out of it or you can destroy it but otherwise he's pretty safe in there. It is a level 8 spell, after all.

Okay, I'll retcon then (so will the ghaele, but not Evanya). I'm away from my computer so I'll only be able to do it in a couple hours. Can you move the tokens back to their original position please?

Sure thing. I've never actually used prismatic wall before but it was in his tactics and seemed like a good spell. I think it's essentially impermeable except the ways outlined above on destroying it. And that violet layer seems to override the effects of the other layers; the only reason the other layers have distinct effects is that there are items that create only certain colors. So destroying just the red layer doesn't do much until the whole thing is destroyed because the violet and indigo layers still block pretty much everything.
Lucian Arvandru |
I'm considering my options here. Would ethereal jaunt allow me to circumvent the prismatic wall if I went through the actual stone wall? That being said, for this round:
Lucian, seeing that thunderous giants and a blue dragons are pitted against them, wards the party against electricity.
Casting communal resist electricity (30) on Sealman, Rissi, the ghaele, Thunderpuss, Evanya and myself.
Meanwhile, the ghaele azata drowns the dragon in a prismatic spray. As in previous post. It probably won't beat the dragon's SR, but it makes sense that he'd stick to that plan.
Sealman Alerteyes |
Sealman allows the giant a few moments more to breath as he instead engages with the dragon. Seal evades the reach of the dragon (the 1st 10') and tries to cleave the terrible lizard in twain.
Isoult vs Blue Dragon: 1d20 + 33 ⇒ (16) + 33 = 49
Dmg: 6d6 + 39 ⇒ (2, 2, 2, 4, 5, 2) + 39 = 56

Ok, I went down a rabbit hole reading more about prismatic wall/sphere and I think my cursory look into it the other day wasn't sufficient. The big thing is the difference between wall and sphere. The sphere emanates from a point (the caster) and the effects are active within the sphere. So if you try to teleport (or some other effect) into it, you are hit by the effects once you appear.
However, for prismatic wall the effects only take place when you pass through the wall. Therefore many people argue you can teleport inside since that shifts you to the Astral Plane and the wall only exists on the Material Plane. And once inside you are safe. I think I tend to agree with this interpretation and since Karzoug cast prismatic wall (and not sphere), that means Lucian could have teleported people inside.
Sorry about the confusion and going back on what I said before but I wanted to make sure I was doing it right.
This might change Lucian's and Seal's actions so you guys can go back to the original plan if you want.
Lucian Arvandru |
I agree with your decision, that's how I would have adjudicated it. However, I didn't want to question your judgement. Let's go back to the original plan then, if that's okay with you! Seal, if you'll do the honors.

OK going full attack on the Rune Lord. For my first hit, it will be the rolls above -4 since I'm not flanking or using BoF bonus. Instead I will use BoF for an extra attack. I'm going to role Bane dmg because I'm assuming Rissi knew what she was talking about when she wanted the Domineering on Isoult figuring Karzoug is a transmuter. So actually, only -2 off the first roll but add Dmg: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (3, 4) + 2 = 9 if that's a hit. I'm also assuming Karzoug is currently size Large too? If not that will reduce my to hit and dmg by 2. Clear as mud? Excellent, let the hackfest begin!
Appearing within the prismatic wall, the rainbow colored light shimmer over Sealman and Thunderpuss's faces. Rage and anger has full enveloped them.
"Palor tricks will not save your skin. You've had 10,000 years devoted nothing but tomorrow and yesterday. Let me bring your peace. Embrace the onslaught of death!"
BoF Isoult vs Karzoug: 1d20 + 31 ⇒ (14) + 31 = 45
Dmg: 6d6 + 39 + 2d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 3, 6, 1, 1) + 39 + (2, 5) = 63
Isoult vs Karzoug: 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (10) + 26 = 36
Dmg: 6d6 + 39 + 2d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 1) + 39 + (1, 2) = 64
Isoult vs Karzoug: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (4) + 21 = 25
Dmg: 6d6 + 39 + 2d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 6, 3, 5, 4) + 39 + (3, 1) = 70
Isoult vs Karzoug: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (10) + 16 = 26
Dmg: 6d6 + 39 + 2d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 1, 1, 3) + 39 + (2, 3) = 59
"Thunderpuss, go for the eyes!"
Thunderpuss Bite vs Karzoug: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (15) + 20 = 35
Dmg: 2d6 + 17 ⇒ (4, 5) + 17 = 26
Thunderpuss BoF Bite vs Karzoug: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (13) + 20 = 33
Dmg: 2d6 + 17 ⇒ (1, 2) + 17 = 20
Thunder Claw 1 vs Karzoug: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (13) + 20 = 33
Dmg: 1d6 + 17 ⇒ (6) + 17 = 23
Thunder Claw 2 vs Karzoug: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (2) + 20 = 22
Dmg: 1d6 + 17 ⇒ (1) + 17 = 18
Afterthough: can the affects of the prismatic spray be used to counter act parts of the prismatic wall?

4 attacks? Haven't you forgotten the BoF one?

Sorry I have been quiet; finishing up some job issues.!
And rock it Seal!

EndlessForms |
Ok, sorry about all that. Hopefully things are worked out now (and really, it's for the benefit of you guys anyways! Otherwise Karzoug would be up to some shenanigans in there...).
And of course Karzoug is a transmuter! (Not that Seal would know that, but Rissi and Lucian certainly would!)
Re: prismatic spray on the prismatic wall: I suppose if you targeted the wall and hit with the right ray.
Lucian grabs his companions and teleports into Karzoug's magical disco color bubble. Lucian tries to add to the vibe with a laser show but Karzoug is unfazed.
Seal cuts into Karzoug twice but Thunderpuss isn't able to hit the powerful transmuter with his many magical defenses.
Each of the storm giants start working their hands in their air, arcs of electricity sparking between their fingers. Twin bolts of lightning shoot from their hands directly at Rissi and Miana! After the bolts hit each of them, they then bounce off to hit the other, really turning this place into even more of a disco.
On Rissi:
electricity: 15d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 5, 3, 2, 1, 3) = 38
DC 20 Ref for half on Rissi, DC 18 for Miana.
On Miana:
electricity: 15d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 2, 2, 6, 1, 2, 2, 6, 1, 6, 2, 3, 4, 1) = 47
DC 20 Ref for half on Miana, DC 18 for Rissi.
Initiative:
1. Rissi
2. Karzoug (119 dmg) and Dragon
3. Kufieno (readied)
4. Rune Giant
5. Lucian and Seal
6. Storm Giants
7. Miana
Miana and Rissi are up!
As a reminder, I'm traveling to Florida tomorrow and I'll be there until the 15th. I actually think my work load will be fairly light so hopefully I'll have time to keep posting up (except tomorrow), maybe even better than usual, haha.
Miana, Champion of Irori |
I"ll post on Thursday. Sorry for my delay
Miana, Champion of Irori |
Miana darts forward, moving to flank with Kufieno. She calls upon Irori's will to smite the dragon, trying to avoid the dragon's counterattack!
BoF for +2 to hit/AC
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 23 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 23 + 2 = 42
Timing it with Kufieno, she exhales and unleashes a powerful heel kick to go with Kufieno's strike.
Stunning IF PA Smite Imp Vital strike: 1d20 + 18 + 2 + 4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 18 + 2 + 4 + 2 + 2 = 47
Damage on hit: 3d8 + 6d8 + 7 + 10 + 26 + 2 ⇒ (6, 4, 2) + (1, 3, 2, 8, 6, 3) + 7 + 10 + 26 + 2 = 80
If it a hit, must make a DC 24 Fort save or stunned for 1 round
AC is currently 45 vs the dragon

So my daily duties in the field only take a few hours but they forgot to warn me that I'd need to collect 6000 leaf samples while I'm here. I've been in the field from sunup to sundown but I'm almost finished and then things should be easier for a while.
I don't think you can banish or dismiss dragons though, at least not this dragon. Basishment says the target is one or more extraplanar creatures, but blue dragons don't have that descriptor: LE Huge dragon (earth). Unless someone can correct me I think Rissi needs to do something different.
Fort: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Miana flies in and delivers a powerful kick fueled by the holy power of Irori! The dragon roars in displeasure and prepares its revenge on the suli squad....
Initiative:
1. Rissi
2. Karzoug (119 dmg) and Dragon (80 dmg)
3. Kufieno (readied)
4. Rune Giant
5. Lucian and Seal
6. Storm Giants
7. Miana
Rissi is up!

6000 samples? What is that, some 1st level grab-an-item quest? Better get some Holy Root from Old Master Jin for that. Heads up, next week will probably super busy for me. Post when I can and I'm not sick of my computer.
Hope this works boss.
Extraplanar Subtype: This subtype is applied to any creature when it is on a plane other than its native plane. A creature that travels the planes can gain or lose this subtype as it goes from plane to plane. Monster entries assume that encounters with creatures take place on the Material Plane, and every creature whose native plane is not the Material Plane has the extraplanar subtype (but would not have it when on its home plane). Every extraplanar creature in this book has a home plane mentioned in its description. Creatures not labeled as extraplanar are natives of the Material Plane, and they gain the extraplanar subtype if they leave the Material Plane. No creature has the extraplanar subtype when it is on a transitive plane, such as the Astral Plane, the Ethereal Plane, or the Plane of Shadow.
Rissi's Planes Roll to know if we are on a plane in which this spell should work: 1d20 + 30 ⇒ (19) + 30 = 49
Rissi Arcane to ID dragon: 1d20 + 35 ⇒ (4) + 35 = 39
EndlessForms |
Huh, that's awesome. I've come across plenty of monsters with the extraplanar subtype but I had no idea any old creature could acquire it just by being somewhere else. Ok, I stand corrected, Rissi can try to shunt the dragon away:
Will: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Rissi tries to throw the dragon back to the Material Plane from whence it came but the dragon is too firmly attached to this place, driving by Karzoug's strong influence!
Karzoug seems unfazed as he turns about, standing on his throne to increase his stature over you even further. With a grasping motion he tries to pull the moisture from your very bodies....
Hits Seal, Thunderpuss, Lucian, and the angelbuddy.
damage: 20d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 3, 1, 4, 1, 6, 2, 1, 1, 3, 3, 2, 5, 2, 4, 1, 6, 6, 6) = 59
DC 32 Fort for half
With the rod in his other hand he again quickly stops time!
1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Again Karzoug's hands move faster than you can track. He withdraws a wand and covers his skin in a stony coating. Stepping down off his throne he then throws up a wall of force to block Seal, Thunderpuss, Lucian, and the azata in the small alcove. Karzoug then protects himself with what Lucian recognizes as globe of invulnerability and spell turning. He then fills the alcove behind the wall of force with a noxious gas...
Cloudkill:
Meanwhile across the chamber the dragon, finding itself surrounded, tries to turn invisible but can not get the spell off.
defensive: 1d20 ⇒ 4
Initiative:
1. Rissi
2. Karzoug (119 dmg, 100 pnts, invulnerability) and Dragon (101 dmg)
3. Kufieno
4. Rune Giant
5. Lucian and Seal
6. Storm Giants
7. Miana
Kufieno is up!
Sealman Alerteyes |
Yah, the explanar/banishment was a trick we used back in the day. We didn't have any documentation to back it up, it just sounded logical. Glad I found some =v)
I think you meant to cast Cloudkill before the Wall of Force, but I get the effect. Slow death baby!
Seal Fort Save: 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (13) + 29 = 42
Thunderpuss Fort Save: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (9) + 19 = 28
Sealman is able to fight off some of the wilting, but alas Thunderpuss could not. All of the moisture is immediately withdrawn from the great cats fur and skin. Thunderpuss's flesh proceeds to crack and crumble to dust. Sealman's companion gives his master one last long look, a plea for help, before his eyes dry up and only empty sockets remain. Thunderpuss has been slain.
Miana, Champion of Irori |
@GM: Don't forget Kufieno's readied action from before!
Readied bite attack for when Miana gets into position: 1d20 + 20 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 20 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 4 = 36
Damage on hit: 1d6 + 11 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + 11 + 4 + (3, 1) = 21
If it hits, using Debilitating Injury to reduce his attack rolls by 2, or by 4 if they are against Kufieno.
Acrobatics to avoid AoO: 1d20 + 22 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 22 + 2 = 39
Using BoF for +2 to hit and AC/Reflex again
Kufieno AC is currently 35 IIRC
Kufieno grins bearing wicked fangs as he now tears into the dragon!
[ooc]BoF for extra attack
Bite @ Dragon: 1d20 + 20 + 2 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 20 + 2 + 2 + 4 = 29
Damage on hit: 1d6 + 11 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (5) + 11 + 4 + (5, 6) = 31
BoF Bite @ Dragon: 1d20 + 20 + 2 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 20 + 2 + 2 + 4 = 48
Damage on hit: 1d6 + 11 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (6) + 11 + 4 + (5, 1) = 27
Crit confirm: 1d20 + 20 + 2 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 20 + 2 + 2 + 4 = 42
Extra damage on crit: 1d6 + 11 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 11 + 4 = 21
Claw @ Dragon: 1d20 + 20 + 2 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 20 + 2 + 2 + 4 = 34
Damage on hit: 1d8 + 8 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (3) + 8 + 4 + (4, 2) = 21
Claw @ Dragon: 1d20 + 20 + 2 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 20 + 2 + 2 + 4 = 37
Damage on hit: 1d8 + 8 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 4 + (4, 6) = 24
Debilitating Injury to remove reduce AC by 2, or by 4 to Kufieno.
Kufieno AC is 33 now
Ooooo Karzoug just dun goofed making Seal angry(-er)!

Yep, Kufieno's damage from last round was noted. I just forgot to mention it in the flavor text.
Poor, poor, Thunderpuss. You lasted beyond all reasonable odds. Maybe your pile of dust can be swept up and brought back some day. For now, a moment of silence for the loyal cat....
---
Although things are looking grim in the cloud behind the wall of force as everyone's favorite cat crumbles to dust and Seal's dwarven temper is set to release at full capacity, Kufieno expertly lines up his series of bites and scatches beneath the dragon's plates and before long the dragon is tumbling out of the sky, landing in the bubbling lava below to be slowly dissolved....
The rune giant is unfazed, however, and continues slowly walking towards the party, his massive sword readied as he points at Rissi and commands, "Just stand still, you little rat."
DC 19 Will save or be dominated!

1. Rissi
2. Karzoug (119 dmg, 100 pnts, invulnerability)
3. Kufieno
